I read that story today too nature. I imagined testing would be redone before birth but maybe hit and miss?

jmojo · 05/02/2015 20:50

nature they treat you if you are a carrier (unless you refuse) irrespective of when it was detected, because you could be neg the day before but pos the day you deliver. As you can see it can be quite bad if the baby does get it. They did not retest pre delivery anywhere I worked. In fact if you have it in any pregnancy you are supposed to be treated in all your labours whether you test positive or not that pregnancy. (Unless something has dramatically changed in the past yr or two)

Naturegirl82 · 05/02/2015 20:50

broody I think it probably is hit and miss. But if it's not made clear it can be a transitional thing, people may end up with a birth plan thats not necessary. I wonder how many people give birth with it but don't know.

Naturegirl82 · 05/02/2015 20:55

jmojo it doesn't seem to suggest that all people that are detected as carriers are routinely offered antibiotics in labour as the benefits haven't been proven.

jmojo · 05/02/2015 20:55

Lots i am sure broody and unless you get something like prolonged rupture of membranes or the baby has a scratch it can get into most people will be ok.

Naturegirl82 · 05/02/2015 20:57

But if they are routinely treated with antibiotics in labour if detected as a carrier it makes it even more suprising that it isn't tested for routinely.

jmojo · 05/02/2015 21:03

nature hmmm well every hospital I have worked in (most of the big london hospitals) certainly did. They don't routinely test because the pick up is so hit and miss. You could be told you are neg but you are a carrier and it is there when you are in labour! I am not saying it is right but that is the reasoning. What yhe do do is take swabs on any mother or baby who has prolonged rupture, or funny smelling liquor, or a high temperature in labour. Babies get sbx if thete are any signs of jnfection in the mother in labour. Etc

jmojo · 05/02/2015 21:04

Babies get abx (antibiotics) total typo

Naturegirl82 · 05/02/2015 21:08

jmojo it sounds like the hospital that you worked in may have been more strict. The article seems to suggest that despite the early rupture of the lady's waters, she wasn't tested or given antibiotics.

jmojo · 05/02/2015 21:25

Sure it sounds like her waters broke, she was in labour and delivered 2 days later. By which time the baby was infected and sadly had died. She had no symptoms. So she had no treatment. If her baby had not died then at birth it would have been observed/swabed etc etc, and had antibiotics if needed because of the prolonged rupture of membranes.

It is horrible. She may very have had a swab in labour, but they take 48 hrs to come back and by then the damage was done. Most babies are born alive in that situation.

Like I said I am not saying it is right but there is nothing to say that testing her at 36 wks would have picked it up. If she had tested neg at 36 wks they would have given her the exact same treatment she received in labour. If she was lucky enough to be picked up then things may have been different, and I am sure she would have received treatment in labour.

There in lies the argument. To test and maybe pick it up, or not to test. That is why home self GBS test kits do so well.

Butler4 · 05/02/2015 21:40

This story makes me glad that it has already been detected in me. As far as I know I will not be retested and I am happy to go ahead with getting Iv antibootics as soon as labour starts and baby being checked regularly.
Dh and I have been talking about how strange it is that everyone is not tested when it seems quite common. Jmojo It's so good to have you here with your wealth of knowledge Smile

jmojo · 05/02/2015 21:43

I hasten to add I am not anti testing in fact I have done private tests for women who are worried about it before, I was just trying to explain why the NHS don't offer it right now. I think they need a better way of testing.

Clstow · 05/02/2015 21:53

Hey ladies, I'd love to join if that's ok..? Pg with my 1st - due July 25th - and realising I've got heaps to learn. Can I also please ask some advice - got my DS test results today and chances are 1:360. I know statistically that's not high risk but compared to some people I know IRL it seems a lot higher than most. Will they do further testing at my next scan? My 16 week midwife app isn't for another fortnight and would love some info before then if anyone has any Confused

Naturegirl82 · 05/02/2015 22:09

Hi clstow welcome and congratulations. I don't think you will be offered any more tests for ds as your result has come back low risk. Speak to your mw if you still have concerns though as she may be able to put your mind at ease.

Naturegirl82 · 05/02/2015 22:10

Sorry just seen you've asked about the scan. They will check the baby for a lot of different things at the anomaly scan.

jmojo · 05/02/2015 22:16

clstow welcome. Nature is right at the next scsn the will check the head and heart and look for markers for abnormality.
I assume you had the combined blood & scan test? A lot of us here had the quad test at 16wks. A blood test as before for the same trisomies but with a test for neural tube defects too. My downs risk came back slightly higher in my 16 wk but it was still in the low bracket. (Iam nearly 39). High risk is classed as1:150. It comes down to what you think is ok. If you feel your result is too high then talk to your mw about it. Amnio is the only way at this stage of knowing 100%. But it does carry a risk of misc of 1:100. So it is a big decision. Also there is a new blood test which you have to pay for, called Harmony. Although some of the research i read said it was only as good as a nuchal in its accuracy, so i don't know. Not sure how that works if you are looking at baby blood cells surely it should be very accurate. But i guess there are false results! I would read about it and talk to your mw tbh first.

WiIdfire · 05/02/2015 22:31

Butler - me too! Positive once, happy to have the anti-bugs. Only question is whether they will give me them in the MLU in the hosp or if I will have to go to delivery ward??

jmojo · 05/02/2015 22:40

wildfire you need to ask your midwife the policy as that would vary from place to place depending on the mlu policy.

JoY007 · 05/02/2015 22:44

Hi Ladies, registering presence, been very busy at work this week. Hope you are all feeling better xx.

I am so looking forward to Friday, and its my book club dinner meeting as well can't wait. I got a pleasant surprise in the post, got a place in the cycling Surrey 100 for this year, I am deferring but it was nice to see the congrats you got a place Smile

BTW I am worried about not contacting mw or gp after my 16w appt, is anyone feeling the same? I do feel ok besides the stretchy feeling and tightness in the tummy. 18+4 growing growing...

Clstow · 05/02/2015 23:01

Thanks nature and jmojo Guess I'll chat it through with my MW when I meet her in a couple of weeks. Definitely glad it's Friday tomorrow Smile

Luckystar82 · 06/02/2015 00:19

What is the quad test? I had the 12 week nuchal and dating scan with blood test, came back very low risk

Was I supposed to ask for quad test too? Never heard of it

My care has not been great so far. New NHS system had deleted my records so had to book my scan with ultrasound dept directly. Saw MW last week and she had to ask what I had etc as had no info on me

Feel at bit at risk tbh

jmojo · 06/02/2015 00:55

lucky the quad test is not a necessity, certainly in my experience not all trusts offer it routinely. Usually mum's who are older may want it or if you get a nuchal result you are not happy with, family history of neural tube defects etc. Or if you are particularly worried re abnormality but don't want an amnio/are trying to decide on an amnio. Really something to discuss with your midwife, they probably wouldn't offer it unless you fell into one of the above categories. But if you said you wanted it I think they would be happy to discuss it.

LostSoulsForever · 06/02/2015 02:22

Hello all! Welcome to the new ladies too Smile
Had my 16 week app on Monday and all went well. Heard the heartbeat which was lovely (despite being told by a different midwife that they no longer listen for HB). Didn't even have to ask, she just said she would listen for it when I said I wasn't feeling movement yet.
A bit of a personal question, but does anyone else feel like they have been kicked in the crotch?! I do. It bloody hurts Blush
CLStow, they only do quad testing here if they can't get accurate measurements at the 12 week anomaly scan so not sure you will get both. Especially if you are technically considered as low risk. As others have suggested, I would speak to your midwife.
Re. Cloth nappies, we could never find one to get DS through the night, even with extra liners etc. we used Bumgenius through the day & pampers at night. We are now using disposables through the day as well as Bumgenius started leaking as he changed shaped & can't justify expense of another brand for what might only be a few months. Would highly recommend a trial kit when little one arrives to see what works best. Not all styles & shapes suit all babies.
Congrats to all those who have had 20 week scans. Mine isn't until 27th Feb - can't wait!
Hope everyone who has been unwell is now feeling better.

JoY007 · 06/02/2015 07:08

Morning Ladies x

lostsouls yep I get that sometimes as well.

Congrats Gotto

LaLaLaaaa · 06/02/2015 07:21

Morning ladies I struggle to keep up on here !

I am still waiting to feel movement, I keep thinking maybe I felt something - a flip or a poke - but never sure. I get lots of stabs which I presume are growing pains at this point.

Going buggy testing today
