Our nct classes don't start till beginning of January! Annoyingly they changed spme of the classes from 7-9 to 8-10 Shock. I go to bed at 10...don't they know we're pregnant?

freneticfox · 22/11/2014 21:26

Spent most of today dozing on the sofa, thoroughly shattered!

Meant to ask yesterday; I had my 28w appointment yesterday and when I asked about the whooping cough jab, the mw I saw said it was up to me if I had it, and to phone up if I decide to - and gave me no further info. I thought it was compulsory?

I assumed people would recommend I have it>

Memphisbelly · 22/11/2014 21:44

Frenetic nothing is compulsary but whooping cough in babies has been on the rise and by the mother having it the baby has immunity for first 6 weeks of their life. It is recommended as it is very dangerous for small babies (I got it at 15 and my lungs will never be the same again)

jenmcspen · 22/11/2014 21:56

I had whooping cough too memphis when I was 9. I agree, my lungs have never been the same since, and I have never been so poorly in my life. It was terrifying, and the thought of my baby going through that meant that getting the jab was a no-brainer for me.

Memphisbelly · 22/11/2014 22:00

Jen ah it sucks doesn't it, you are the first person who isn't my mums generation I have 'met' who also had it, I was 3 days into starting a new school and started coughing up blood

Memphisbelly · 22/11/2014 23:55

Argh restless legs are back with a vengance!

Ticktick · 23/11/2014 09:43

I had whopping cough too when I was a baby. My mum said it was horribly scary. My lung function isn't great as an adult, never thought of linking that with whooping cough! crazy. Having the vaccine is definitely a no brainier! I'm with you memphis :)

GeekyHybrid · 23/11/2014 09:58

frenetic my GP surgery sent me a letter about getting whooping cough jab. They also sent a 2nd letter, on the same day about flu jab! Efficiency in the NHS is obviously still an alien concept. But basically your GP surgery should be able to do it for you, I believe any time between 28-32 weeks is the recommended time frame.
This is definitely a cold; very snotty, ears ache, sore throat etc. Haven't particularly got fever / aching muscles that would hint at flu. Guess it's me, a duvet and hot Ribena for the next few days :-D And today there is the F1 followed by England v Germany to pass the time. Not sure how I'll cope when we get to weekday daytime TV, boxset anyone?!

donkir · 23/11/2014 10:01

Well it was pointless going to bed last night I feel I hardly slept at all. I've got a friends surprise baby shower today. Can't say I'm that enthusiastic about it.

Memphisbelly · 23/11/2014 10:11

Geeky I am hoping I will be just cleaning and pottering (and coffee shop visits) once I finish work (if I finish) I don't have an attention span for boxsets at the minute which is a shame as I upgraded my Sky to have them on red button.
Hope you feel better later today.

I hardly slept last night lots of pee stops, tossing and turning and my legs driving me mad. Got my FIL birthday meal latercthen hoping to get to see xmas lights in town after ds being ill the other day scuppered our plans.

Grinningcat · 23/11/2014 11:19

Morning ladies. Also looking forward to the F1 later. Then we're off to see Interstellar followed by Frankie and Bennies. Not sure I'll make it through a 3 hour film without repeated loo stops but we have end seats at least Grin.

Bought the Moses basket yesterday. Love it. I have question though. Does baby have to go in the Moses basket using a blanket/coverlet provided or can you use a sleeping bag/Gro bag instead?

Memphisbelly · 23/11/2014 11:26

Grinning if it is a little padded quilt thing you shouldn't use it (don't actually know why they provide those (classed as a quilt and they aren't to be used under 12 months) if baby fits ok into a growbag then thats ok but we bought growbags and ds was swamped by it for first 4-6 weeks so we swaddled then swaddled below armpits a bit later on, you have to make sure with grobag that it doesn't come over chin as they cound wriggle down.

Argh have such a bad headache....attempting to eat it away with toast, fruit, biscuits and now wotsits (my new craving)

freneticfox · 23/11/2014 11:27

I'll be on the phone to the Dr surgery in the morning to book my whooping cough jab, I'm so sorry that some of you have been through it; it sounds awful.

I have my glucose test at 9am tomorrow morning, inescapable as my Mum is diabetic. Should I prepare to be very bored for a couple of hours?

GeekyHybrid · 23/11/2014 11:50

It depends frenetic, if they've given you instructions to drink your Lucozade at 7am then it's literally a 2 minute job to take some blood at 9am and they'll contact you with the results. They need 2 hours between you consuming the set amount of glucose (hence Lucozade) and taking bloods so if they're having you consume the sugar on site then yes you'll be hanging around for a while :-$
I had the blood taken earlier this week (Mom and mat-Grandpa Type 2 diabetic, pat-cousin Type 1) and so far I figure no news is good news, especially as OH came home with a box of Ferrero Roche given to him by grateful customer - he found their phone that they'd accidentally chucked in the bin. Doh!

freneticfox · 23/11/2014 12:11

Geeky I have to do the drink there; so yeeeep. Expecting to wait around. Will be taking my kindle, and already warned my Twitter timeline I'll be boredom tweeting!

Viperama · 23/11/2014 12:50

I got the phone call to say I have to have the full test, the day after the mini glucose test, so Geeky I'd say you are in the clear - glad for you.

It's a bloody pain, I've now realised I've been feeling sickie after my breakfast most days as I eat either porridge (packet job with golden syrup), granola or muslei....too much sugar. So I've now got to shop for low/no sugar stuff. How to do that from internet shopping. Ah well shit happens!

PeppermintInfusion · 23/11/2014 13:13

Viper, do you like cinnamon? I have plain porridge with that sprinkled on, makes it a bit more interesting without any sugar, also nuts or a chopped banana work too.

sandulacek · 23/11/2014 13:29

grinning I've been looking into a swaddle bags as they say most sleeping bags are too big for a newborn...the holes seem to be too big. I quite like the one from puckababy although a bit pricey. But seen some for half price too! I'm just not sure if we'll be able to swaddle so this seems like a good compromise.

Viperama · 23/11/2014 14:22

I love cinnamon Peppermint, thanks I'll try that Smile

PinkyAndTheBump · 23/11/2014 17:17

Whoooping Cough Jab

It's also for Polio, Diptheria & TETANUS.

Yes - that means its going to hurt afterwards :( I thought we always got Tetanus jabs in the bum for that reason. I got my jab in my right arm, so that I could sleep on my left, but it was still very sore. I wish I had asked if thigh/bum was an option - not sure if it is, but think it would have hurt less!!

It's the same one that they give pre-schoolers.

PinkyAndTheBump · 23/11/2014 17:22

Baby First Aid

I heartily recommend that you all go and download the FREE Red Cross app for Baby & Child first aid. We went on a one-day course over the weekend, which was great, as we could practice on dummies. We learnt the safe / recovery position for babies, and how to deal with choking and/or not breathing etc.

A lot of it was basically common sense - but the message that was drummed in was if the baby is not breathing and/or unconscious - you call 999, and carry out baby cpr if not breathing until the ambulance arrives. Also calling 999 was favourable over heading direct to a&e as ambulance team will be able to assist faster.

I hope we never have to use these skills, but I feel much happier that I would know what to do in that eventuality!

jenmcspen · 23/11/2014 17:25

cinnamon porridge sounds yummy Grin

Viperama · 23/11/2014 17:45

Pinky I've been first aid trained and kept it up for last 20 years, I think they should teach it in school, it's an essential life skill and I have used it a few times.

Sent DP on baby course offered by local NCT was £45 I think xx

Viperama · 23/11/2014 17:46

He loved it btw, came back all full of beans Smile

freneticfox · 23/11/2014 18:44

Any tips on coaxing a bouncy baby away from my lungs? I think I actually prefer the bladder abuse...
