It's weird how we've all been given different advice re: low-lying placentas. I know mine is right on the edge of the cervix so needs to move 2cm for them to be happy with it, but it makes me wonder if we would get away with going against advice and dtd if we were really careful?

Anyway, had a mare of a day yesterday. Took the dog for a lovely walk with DS - he's only 2 and loves holding the dog's lead, especially on a day when he can put his wellies on and go tramping through the leaves. Everything was fine on the walk but within 2 minutes of getting home the dog had explosive watery diarrhoea and within half an hour had pretty much collapsed, drooling constantly and diarrhoea constantly dripping out the other end - scary! Shock Sad.

Whisked him off to the vet and he's been there ever since, on IV fluids, antibiotics and painkillers. The vet suspects poisoning of some description but no idea what from. I didn't see him eat anything on our walk but he is a scavenger and very quick when he spots something so maybe I was watching DS and missed it? Makes me feel really guilty...

Anyway we're a little more hopeful this morning as he's apparently a bit brighter and can walk now, which he couldn't really do yesterday. Just waiting for a phone call with a plan of action for today.

Sorry for the waffle, it's been a very stressful 24hrs! Hope everyone else is having a slightly more relaxed time Smile.

Jannywannywoohoo · 04/11/2014 10:03

Ooh keeper poor dog! Hope he makes a good recovery today x

Butterpuff · 04/11/2014 10:13

Sorry to hear that Keeper, hope you have some good news soon.

May I ask some of the experienced Mum's about breastfeeding? I assumed that babies need constant feeding when they are tiny, but assumed it dropped off a bit when they get bigger. My friend fed her little girl three times in three hours last night, I would never have expected it to be so much. LG is 5 months. Are all babies like this? My plans for working from home might be put on hold if I spend the first 6 months feeding every hour.

M27J5M · 04/11/2014 10:21

So sorry to hear that keeper, hope the dog makes a good recovery and is back home with you all soon!

I can't stop eating cake and chocolate!! A cupcake, 3 chomps and now munching a share size bag of Milky Way starsShock I'd like to Scythia was over a long period of time buyouts over the space of 10 mins lol oooooops

fishfingerSarnies · 04/11/2014 10:33

Oh keeper that's awful I'm so sorry, will be keeping fingers crossed for tour poor dog. Don't feel guilty there's nothing you could have done if he snaffled something up quickly out walking.

Butterpuff it may just have been that your friend was feeding her daughter more to keep her quiet in company than for proper feeds at that age, but also maybe be that she's having a growth spurt a needing some top up foods. I seem to remember my daughter was feeding ever couple of hours during the day at that age didn't start dropping feeds untill around 8/9 moths when solids were getting more consistent. Don't think I could have worked from home untill dd was over one. Will you have some one else to entertain while your working?

pinkandstripey · 04/11/2014 10:35

Poor doggy :( hope he makes a quick recovery, let us know how he gets on?

butter you should be fine at the dentist, mention it on way in, the worst that should happen is that you may have to take card in at later date and sign something.

They all feed differently, and go through periods where they eat lots (usually when it's most inconvenient for you!). I remember nights where he wanted to feed every hour on the hour. I had an app to record feeds and I think it was every 3 hours on average in the later months. I fed until just before 6 months when he worked out what his teeth were for :(

Guntons · 04/11/2014 10:41

Keep losing this thread Sad
Scan today 3pm, any ideas on keeping occupied until then gratefully received!...think I'll have bath, maybe make some soup & get ahead with tonight's meal.
Butterpuff I B/F my son for 8 months, I was told to feed him every 2 hours when newborn, but sometimes he would feed for so long in one go, it wasn't necessary to feed him so frequently. However he would cluster feed when having a growth spurt every few weeks, so 3 times in 3 hours not unusual at those times, but it wasn't a permanent feature of his feeding pattern. Maybe your friend's lg is having a growth spurt! At about 3 months old we established a regular pattern, but be prepared for it to evolve as they grow & nap times change etc etc! I made a chart like a timetable on the computer with feeds, sleeps, nappy changes etc. I'm a bit of a control freak/OCD so having a newborn and the chaos it brings was challenging, and I found this brought back some order, which helped me mentally & I felt I could maintain some routine when my mum/mil where helping out.
I hope that helps. All babies are different so you just find what works best for you & your lo and go with the flow! Smile Have you thought about expressing? Once we had feeding established I used my pump and my son took to a bottle without too much trouble so I combined the two methods which also meant I could work from home & not have baby constantly clamped to me! Good luck xx

KeeperOfTheZoo · 04/11/2014 11:38

re: bf, I bf DS for 9.5 months and to be honest I was told to feed him on demand so that was what I did. He would go anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours between feeds and in the evenings he definitely cluster fed - I think the idea is that they stock up then they can sleep but my DS obviously forgot about the sleeping bit.... I would have to feed him only 20 minutes after stopping the last one sometimes but that was only for a couple of hours or so before bed.

Just heard that my dog is being transferred back to our normal vets as we speak and is looking relatively bright so hopefully he's over the worst. It is a pain though that I'm going to have to go to the out of hours vet this afternoon to pay their outstanding bill and leave an insurance form with them for the overnight care, then go to our normal vet, where he now is, and do the same with them for yesterday's and today's care (and beyond if we can't bring him home today). I know the insurance will cover most of the cost eventually but I'm dreading how many hundreds of pounds are going to be added to the credit card today!!! Shock

Butterpuff · 04/11/2014 12:08

Glad to hear your dog is on the mend keeper

Thanks everyone for the BF advice. So much baby stuff is a mystery to me. It was late evening when we saw them so I suspect stocking up before bed may have accounted for the frequent feeds and she has had a growth spurt which Mummy and Daddy were very proud of. I just had no idea how hard and time consuming it really is! Oh I'm in for a shock!

Just had a text from my cousin with her latest scan picture in (she is due December but been ill so had an extra one) its just a large image of babies foot!

theonewiththenoisychild · 04/11/2014 13:42

butterpuff i breast fed ds until 7 months and he fed every 2-3 hours mostly went 3 hours. he took good long feeds and seemed content. he was a greedy baby tho he would make sure he had drained both breasts before he fell asleep. he was a very easy baby to breast feed. im hoping this baby will be just like his/her brother Smile but ive never known a breast fed baby to feed that often all the time. only growth spurts. every baby is different but its not usually that regular that you need to feed baby

theonewiththenoisychild · 04/11/2014 13:57

keeper glad your dog seems a bit better now. such a worry when a pet is ill. our cat has been ill too. not that bad that he as needed to see the vet but been sick a few times the last few days and hasnt eaten untill this morning looked rather depressed and was hiding aswell. he is really oh's cat as he seems to like him more and oh has loved him to bits since he came through the door as a 6 week old kitten. oh has been so worried and dutifully cleaned up after him and tried to cheer him up a bit. anyway he's perked up a bit today so we are hoping he is getting better but its not nice seeing them ill. think id have fell to pieces had my cat been as poorly as your dog tho Sad

Guntons · 04/11/2014 16:31

All well at scan, anyone want to guess the gender from my pic?.... We did find out but DH has banned me from telling anyone (although strictly speaking I don't 'know' you ladies so I may have to spill!)

fourmonthstogo · 04/11/2014 18:06

Lovely pic guntons but I have no idea, I couldn't even tell with mine with the sonographer pointing it out!
Sympathies to all those with poorly pets, hope they get better soon.
I had some good news today- turns out I will be getting stat mat pay, I didn't think I'd been there long enough to qualify so that's really nice to hear!

Rainbow555 · 04/11/2014 18:38

Keeper glad your dog is on the mend, very stressful when they are poorly.
theone our cat was like this recently! vets get worried when cats don't eat as they can go into starvation mode and just give up! probably ok if yours is eating and feeling brighter again but just to let you know in case doesn't improve! I would go to the vets. Ours had suspected toxo.

keeper re your sex ban, I think I would stick to it! I know easy for me to say as I wasn't told to stay away from sex but if it is pretty covered most of the articles I have read say to avoid sex and heavy lifting etc but if only partial might be ok. I will ask mw next week whether we should cube careful re sex as don't think sonographer would have told us!

coastergirl · 04/11/2014 18:50

keeper your poor doggy! So glad he is on the mend. Hate it when any of my pets are poorly, I worry about them so much. Hate the thought that they aren't feeling well and can't tell us or understand why.

persepolis123 · 04/11/2014 21:20

Great news fourmonths. It must have been a stressful time not knowing if you were going to get it or not.

Glad your dog seems to be improving keeper. I am also a dog owner and know how worrying it is when they aren't well.

theonewiththenoisychild · 04/11/2014 21:45

rainbow he does seem a lot better now but we will keep an eye on him. oh cleaned up all the mess incase of toxoplasmosis because thats dangerous to little one. but i was just so relieved when he was meowing for breakfast this morning and purring round my ankles Smile

Rainbow555 · 05/11/2014 04:31

That's good so glad he is better!

SurfsUp1 · 05/11/2014 05:45

Butterpuff bf advice can cover such a wide spectrum! What works for one Mum might be torture for another and vice-versa. Just listen a lot and then sort out in your own mind what sits right with you, and then be prepared to completely change you mind again down the track!!

I bf DS1 for 9 or 10 months. He was pretty small when he was born so I had to wake him and feed him (every 3 or 4 hours I think??) I didn't find it easy at first and I don't cope well with lack of sleep (which is inevitable) so for me, setting a routine was really helpful.

Basically I think (and it was a while ago) I fed envy 4 hours during the day once everything was established. I also expressed an extra bottle so that I could top him up in the evening so that he was well and truly stuffed before being put to bed for the night.

I found the reliability of the routine made my life much easier - other people would hate that kind of regimented set up totally unappealing.

I found on MN there was a lot of "pressure" to do things one way and IRL there was pressure to do the opposite. Just do what works for you and don't feel pressured to conform to other people's opinions. If you're comfortable then you're more likely to stick with it for longer.

SurfsUp1 · 05/11/2014 05:45

Yikes - essay!! sorry!! Blush

Lifeisabeach · 05/11/2014 07:19

Scan today, eeek! Feeling nervous. Had been feeling lots of movement last week but haven't noticed as much for the past few days. Probably because I've been back at work and busy and just haven't noticed it as much.

It's at 9.30 so not too long to wait. Just hope I get there in time - school drop off is at 8.45 and the hospital is 35 mins away so will be a bit tight!

theonewiththenoisychild · 05/11/2014 08:18

i was nervous too about my 20 week scan as the sonographer said they are "looking for trouble" i did fine i didnt relax and enjoy my scan yesterday as its such a clinical scan i think. i found i could enjoy the 12 week scan as quick measurements and then they let you have a good look at baby.

they dont tell you what your having where i live so have to pay. the good news is its only £35 now at the hospital. me and oh are debating whether to go for a standard scan at the hospital or go private for a 4d scan. oh is usually very stingey but has said a 4d one would be nice as weve never seen one. really not sure whether to go for simple pink or blue scan or a 4d one and a good look at baby

Ellizardo · 05/11/2014 09:03

Good luck beach!
Noisy - £35?!!! That's crazy, I don't understand why they charge for what is a routine observation, no? It feels very exploitative but perhaps there's a good reason, can someone explain?
I've got my 20 week scan tmw morning, first time that my Ma is coming too as OH can't get away. Ma last went to a maternity dept in the 70s so I think she's going to be surprised at how detailed scans are. She's usually hilarious in these situations (inadvertently) anyway, asking technical questions and asking 'what does that big red button do?' Etc.
Have a cervical scan booked too as concerns about incompetent cervix - I call it the dildo scan - so she might want to leave the room for that one

junkfoodaddict · 05/11/2014 09:18

I posted yesterday a photo on the FB page but haven't here. I had my scan yesterday and the monster wasn't performing. I needed to be rescanned three times. At first we thought there was only three heart chambers but the sonographer said baby wasn't in a good position. I had to go back after 10 minutes after a wee and a jiggle. Got the heart done -four chambers but he said it was difficult to see the heart. Placenta was thought to be covering the cervix but he asked me back again and said stomach muscles must have relaxed because he saw it at the top and down the side of my uterus which means NOT covering the cervix and nowhere near. All in all, a healthy baby and so happy to announce that we are having a little girl!!!! So a baby sister for DS who will be 3 years and 2 months when she arrives. York hospital were amazing. I had further growth scans, bloods and anti d injection all booked before I left as well as being asked what date I would like my c section so we are now booked in for monday 16th March - baby Junkfood's birth date!!

smokeandglitter · 05/11/2014 09:52

Been so busy with work (not finishing until 8pm) that haven't caught up on here for a long while! I've rft here, but didn't finish the previous one! Must re-email about facebook after email address problems too!

Keeper Really hope your lovely dog recovers! Poor thing! Not your fault though, these things happen and dogs can be so very quick with what they pick up.

Junk Congrats on a little sister for DS!

Congrats and big smiles to all who've had their 20 week scans! Grin

I just had mine. All looks healthy - I'm so pleased. We had been worried about Cleft Lip in association with my meds but baby looks perfectly formed from what we can see. Little One was very contrary, refusing to pose for pictures but we did get some good views of the profile. Was really sucking their hand/thumb at one point, bless. Will post a picture soon!

Have found out a couple of difficult things. It's been confimed I can't breastfeed due to my medication. I am sad about that, though trying to look at the positives of bottlefeeding to make me feel better. My CMHT doctor and social worker got my hopes up that it would be ok to breastfeed, but it's really not and I'm just not sure I am happy pumping a baby full of strong medication anyway. Also, pretty definitely need to give birth in hospital when I was so hoping for a home birth. Baby may be born in some withdrawal from my medication (though unlikely) and because of that risk it is preferable I'm in hospital. Really sad about that, I was very much hoping to manage at home.

Other than that, got back into the swing of things more now. Starting the day with Mango and Lychee Green Tea and Yoga and just sent off for a maternity swimming costume so fingers crossed that fits.
