MrsEO- I think they change the guidelines quite often depending on what research has been done. I was pleasantly surprised about the Stilton when I looked it up today.

impatienceisavirtue- I was diagnosed with bipolar four years ago, just had a diagnosis of depression when I had DS so wasn't seen as being nearly as high risk as I am now. Also on different tablets now. Glad pregnancy seems to help your health! Hope I get the same. I was on lamotrigine til last week, still on quetiapine so am expecting to need extra scans because of that, although that's based on what I learned for MRCPsych a few years ago so might have changed (like the food rules!) I'm an old age psychiatrist now so I don't know all the up to date stuff about the medications in pregnancy- have read the research but don't know how they put that into practice locally, will see my psychiatrist next week so hopefully he will tell me.

Alis- large amounts of caffeine can cause miscarriage or low birth weight- advice is to limit it to 200mg/day which is the equivalent of a couple of mugs of instant coffee. They tend to err very much on the safe side when recommending things though so wouldn't worry if you've been having more than that already. www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2014 21:18

I see!

I don't really have much caffeine as I hate tea and coffee. Just the odd fizzy drink. But currently they make me vomit so not having any at all!

BingoBonkers · 26/10/2014 21:32

Prior to realising I might be pregnant and in the last six weeks I've had cocktails, Gin, Mozzarella, green tea, fair few posh coffees and a booze filled weekend. Blush I'm in anxiety central right now as a result.

Have switched to decaf and trying not to over eat as put on four stone last time and three stone the time before that.

Nuts inc peanuts are ok now. Funny how what you can and can't eat changes over time.

Nausea hasn't been as bad today. Still awful in parts but has eased off once I eat. Previous experience has been bad. Morning noon and night. DH used to say You'll feel better soon as it's almost the afternoon. I wanted to punch him!

AnythingNotEverything · 26/10/2014 21:36

The big recent change is that rare meat isn't recommended. It was until a couple of years ago I believe but the NHS now advises against it due to the risk of toxoplasmosis. So many people told me I was wrong during my last pregnancy.

There's no judgement in that from me though - you make your own risk assessment. Just good to start with the facts Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2014 21:46

Bingo

I drank 4 large glasses of wine 3 days before I found out I was pregnant. I keep telling myself that all will be well as the brain/face had not started developing at that point.

Haven't had any alcohol since though.

Really torn over the meat thing. I simply cannot eat well done steak but is the medium rare worth it? Might just not have steak at all and treat myself once baby has arrived.

impatienceisavirtue · 26/10/2014 21:50

caty I was on apiprazole prior to ttc, my psych was under the impression I had carried on taking it (oops) when I got preg earlier this year (ended in mc). He said it was fine and plenty of people took it, but my GP agreed with me that I shouldn't, so seems they can't agree! My psych is generally a moron and my GP is fantastic, but I guess psych in theory should have more specialist knowledge.

Tranquilitybaby · 26/10/2014 21:53

Congratulation the new joiners! X

This thread is travelling fast, I can't keep up!

I turned down a goats cheese pizza today, but reading this, it looks like I could've had it!

Don't feel so sick today, but craving salty things. Ready salted French fries crisps just did the trick.

AnythingNotEverything · 26/10/2014 21:55

Alis I'll avoid steak entirely, but then I like it blue or rare. The risk is small but I had TORCH screening last time because of polyhydramnios and spent a weekend worrying that I'd got toxo and damaged the baby. It was torture. Baby was fine Smile. Not worth the risk for me.

That said, once I'm through this first trimester I'll probably have a glass of wine every week or so. A lovely fat fruity red wine. I'm looking forward to it already.

Catypillar · 26/10/2014 22:02

Problem with most medications (esp new ones like aripiprazole) is that there isn't much information about their use in pregnancy and it's very difficult to get trials of medication in pregnancy past research ethics committees, so there's no right answer. GPs will understandably be more cautious than psychiatrists about what to prescribe mental health-wise in pregnancy. Depends on weighing up risks and benefits for each person really. I'm on quetiapine which has been around a bit longer than aripiprazole but there's still not a lot of information- I chose to stay on it as I rarely stay well for longer than a few months even with medication (fortunately don't get dramatically ill though- mostly just depressive episodes) and am much worse without. Still worry about it, and the lamotrigine, but would worry about the risks to the baby from my mental health if I didn't take it.

Catypillar · 26/10/2014 22:04

Tranquillity- ahhh salty things!! I have none in the house, gone off the sweet things that I do have (!) and the nearest shop open at this time is 16 miles away.... It's too late to knock neighbours' doors and ask if they have crisps isn't it? (I don't know my neighbours very well)

Tranquilitybaby · 26/10/2014 22:09

Sorry Catypillar to do that to you so late at night! Confused

MrsExtraOrdinary · 26/10/2014 22:18

Glad you getting what sounds like good care caty. My grandmother had bipolar and she was on lithium for about 60 years. She had some awful treatment during her life and years at a time in hospital when my mother was growing up and when I was a baby. It was such a frightening time for my poor mum as she didn't know where her mother was as a child. I'm so glad mental health has come on so far and support is there.

ktd2u · 26/10/2014 22:41

Has anyone had a blood test to see if they have been exposed to Toxoplasmosis? I've read that you can have a blood test and thinking about it as I have a very outdoor loving cat who brings in mud and half eaten mice. I don't handle cat litter and try to wash my hands after stroking him but worry about any previous exposure before bfp. Grateful for any advice x

AnythingNotEverything · 26/10/2014 22:52

Ktd I don't think it's tested for as standard in the UK. It is in France I believe.

PerpetualStudent · 26/10/2014 23:39

I asked for a toxioplasmosis blood test when I first started TTC and was refused.
Dr said it's rare not to have had it so they don't test Hmm

Though apparantly to get it from your cat it has to be the first time they have got it, there will be spores (or whatever?!) in their faeces which you will have to somehow come into contact with. So it's a bit of a perfect storm. Apparently if your cat is of any great age, & you've had them for a while it's likely one or both of you will have had it before...

HariboBrenshnio · 27/10/2014 06:47

Those worrying about alcohol before your BFP, you really shouldn't. For a start, your not directly feeding baby yet. It's living off the yolk while the placenta develops. Also, with DS who is a wonderful 1 year old, I drank for 12 hours (was at uni, DPs birthday, Sunday session got out of hand!) and smoked too many cigarettes at about 4 weeks as I didn't find out until 6 weeks. He's totally fine :)

I got my referral to 'one to one midwives' and she's coming to book me in next week. She sounds lovely, I'm very excited!

Phryn · 27/10/2014 07:59

Morning ladies,

For food based queries and generally pregnancy reading full stop I really reccomended Emily Oster ' s "Expecting Better: why the conventional pregnancy wisdom is wrong and what you really need to know" www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1409142310?pc_redir=1413962850&robot_redir=1

I know I've banged on about it before but she's crunched the data and provides info in a really clear and informative way (such as a table of fish comparing mercury levels and omega 3 - allowing the reader to easily identify the fish that are low in mercury and high in omega 3 which are the best ones to go for).

Wishing everyone good weeks. Due to the nausea and dizziness effecting my work I've decided to tell my boss this week. I think she'll be fine but somehow feel a bit nervous about it.

Phryn · 27/10/2014 08:00

Sorry - clicable link www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/1409142310?pc_redir=1413962850&robot_redir=1

Bazza2 · 27/10/2014 08:02

Hi all, wanted to join in. I'm (fingers crossed) 9 weeks today. Terrified as I am not as sick as many others but hopeful that things are okay. Three weeks til scan so trying to keep quiet.

AnythingNotEverything · 27/10/2014 08:06

Welcome Bazza!

bubalou · 27/10/2014 08:20

Hey all,

Sunbathing - try not to torture yourself about having an easier start. My DS was sooooo much easier then this pregnancy so far! Apart from heartburn and a little bit of sickness my first trimester was fine.

This one has been vomiting, nausea, unable to eat or drink, heartburn, backache, weight loss. Thank god it all begun to ease now.

It's hard to be rational in early pregnancy and be happy with a lack of symptoms or be happy when you have so many you feel like shit Smile

Bring on the second trimester!

BingoBonkers · 27/10/2014 08:50

That book looks good thank you!

Despite this pregnancy being my third I feel like a complete newbie all over again.

I've also realised that the bad dizzy spells I experienced two weeks ago were pregnancy. I've been oblivious to it all and patiently waiting for AF to appear and not realising that she was almost two weeks late.

The nausea doesn't seem AS bad as previously. I do get moments of reprieve where as before I felt so ill and could barely function. Of course I'm over thinking it all.

Happy Monday everyone.

Chookford · 27/10/2014 09:14

Morning ladies

Wow have missed loads over the weekend!

Welcome and congrats to Teenie Rocking Gr33 Slack Caty and Bazza there are so many of us now!

Jenny congrats on the scan, lovely news!

Does anyone else have boobs that look like a road map? The blue veins in my gargantuan boobs are ridiculous!!! Grin

BingoBonkers · 27/10/2014 09:14

Have rung the doctors to make an appt and they can't see me until mid November and spoke to reception who said I will be put on MW callback list and she will call me back when I'm around 10weeks. This is fine however I'm thinking that if my booking appt isn't til then I've no hope of getting a 12 week scan on/around 12wks?!
