Thanks everyone. Dentist was amazing. Totally reassured me before she even started then just packed in temporary fillings - not even a drill. She was truly great.

Headed to mothercare to push my pram around for a bit Blush not buying til after 20 week scan.

Question on covers for pram: is the done thing that you buy sleeping bags and just put baby in there with a spare blanket handy if you need it OR do you swaddle? If the latter, do you have no other covers in there except a fitted sheet? Or do can you later up after you swaddle? And also, you donmt have any bumpers? If there are so dangerous, how do places like mothercare get away with advertising them?

Sorry for stupid questions! Starting to try to picture what I'll actually be doing post march!

m33r · 16/10/2014 18:45

layer up; not later up!

KentExpecting · 16/10/2014 18:48

Um, talking of dentists... I have an appointment on Tuesday. But haven't been able to even brush my teeth without gagging for the past 3 months or so. I'm a bit worried that I'll start gagging as soon as they start doing stuff in my mouth. Any advice on that?

Lifeisabeach · 16/10/2014 19:18

m33r, I swaddled my DS with one of those shaped swaddle blankets, think it was callied a miracle blanket. You end up wrapping several layers around them so I didn't put any other blankets over him - you are meant to be very careful about overheating when swaddling. It really worked for him for the first couple of months. I then switched to a grobag - I had 2.5 tog and 1 tog bags I think.

My DD hates being swaddled and I co slept with her initially. Then she went into grobags.

Both of mine were May babies so I didn't need any other covers when they were newborns.

Mine were in a Moses basket for the first few months and then a cot. I didn't use cot bumpers and it was never a problem.

m33r · 16/10/2014 19:37

lifeis that is very helpful! Thanks very much. In theory, could I add blankets to a grow back or swaddled baby? Is there anything unsafe about that?

m33r · 16/10/2014 19:38

kent I have no idea sorry. I haven't been able to clean my tongue for months. Good luck !

Lifeisabeach · 16/10/2014 20:36

m33r, no I think that would be fine if it was cold. I had some cellular blankets that I used for layering. I used a grobag egg room thermometer, it changes colour as well as telling you the room temp. I remember the winter of 2010 when DD was 6 months, the egg went blue as it was so cold - I'd never seen it do that before!

3isthemajicnumber · 16/10/2014 21:20

Hi I used cotton sheets and thin blankets for layering for ds then he went into a gro bag quite soon I would say about 8 weeks as he curled up and ducked under the blankets and scared me. Mind you he was born in dec so it was chilly.
I will second the gro egg. Really helps decide what to put them in.

Had my 20 week scan today. All was fine hurrah.

m33r · 16/10/2014 22:09

3is that is great news. Mine is a week on weds. Any photos to fuel my habit?

Thanks for blanket advice. So did you add blankets over a grow bag?

Surfsup1 · 16/10/2014 22:14

And also, you donmt have any bumpers? If there are so dangerous, how do places like mothercare get away with advertising them?

Lots of people don't follow the guidelines to the letter. You need to read up on each of the recommendations and decide for yourself I guess.

I tend to move DCs out of my room much earlier than the recommendations, but I don't use bumpers or blankets, I bf (when possible) and I don't smoke. Not all the recommendations carry the same level of risk, so people tend to weigh and balance the risks with their own personal circumstances.

Surfsup1 · 16/10/2014 22:19

You can get some fantastic grobag type things that have multiple layers so you can make them warmer and cooler with the seasons. I had an amazing one before - I'll try and remember what it was called as it was SO good.

m33r · 16/10/2014 22:27

Thanks surf

lotsoftoast · 17/10/2014 06:58

Durham what sort of the material are the purpless tops? Are they soft?

Managed to feel baby girl kick from the outside last night, such a lovely feeling and one I didn't get with ds till much further on

Off to town to get a belly band, in desperate need now!

How is everyone?

Hello! Feeling pretty good, had 17 week mini anomaly scan yesterday as was high risk for Downs earlier (Harmony test reassured me) and all is well.
Finding it difficult to sleep though, anyone else? So tired but can't actually drop off whilst DH passes out in 3 mins ... It's part discomfort, part excitement. Any suggestions?

pinkandstripey · 17/10/2014 08:41

Morning everyone :) had our 20 week scan yesterday, all is well :) have to go back in a couple of weeks as was one spinal check they couldn't do as baby wasn't having any of it! Did show us very clearly that he is a little boy tho, so obviously not a shy one! :) :) really thought this one was a girl! Feeling very thankful and excited today :)

pinkandstripey · 17/10/2014 08:49

Not sure who was asking about bumpers up thread, but have a quick Google for cot bumper safety, makes for some very sad reading.

We have a cot wrap from a company called safe dreams, stops limbs and toys falling through the bars, but is breathable and can't be climbed on.

I guess mothercare etc sell them with warnings on :(

Lifeisabeach · 17/10/2014 09:07

m33r, I used to tuck a blanket into the side of the cot and then put it over DC in their grobag and tuck it into the other side of the cot, so it was quite tight over them. But that was only when it was really cold.

If you look on the grobag website, there should be a guide to what to dress them in according to the room temp and tog of the sleeping bag.

Good to hear about the 20 week scans going well. Mine is almost 3 weeks away. Think I might have felt a bit of movement over the past few days so that's reassuring.

We started clearing out the spare room last weekend ready for OH to decorate it. It's been a dumping ground for assorted crap for the past couple of years so there's still a way to go. Will need new carpet and curtains too. I've got the cotbed from my other DCs, and the matching wardrobe and drawers are in DDs room at the moment so we'll have to buy her some new furniture.

Can't wait to have the room all finished so I can start getting baby stuff down from the loft and sorting through it all. I may have crept up there yesterday and had a look at tiny vests and babygros in my newborn box!

MGFM · 17/10/2014 09:23

20 week scan time is exciting. Mine is a week today and I can barely wait! I have heard that these bumper things can be dangerous. I need to do some research as dont know much about it. I took a day off work yesterday and sstarted to do some clearing out upstairs. With us both being in the military we have so mucj stuff! Mostly uniform, and it takes up a lot of space! i want to paint the nursery yellow, boy or girl. We are going to get some samples soon.

I have been feeling the baby but nothign I could def say was a kick. Hopefully in the next week or so.

Still have horrible back pain, upper middle right which wraps round to my ribs. Nearly cried making dinner last night it was so painful. 2nd trimester not so much fun!

MGFM · 17/10/2014 09:25

Have also been keeping an eye out on gumtree for some 2nd hand nursery furniture. it is soooo expensive, and whilst we probably could afford it, I cant stand the idea of spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds on it. There is some nice stuff for sale second hand and looks in pretty good condition. Need to save somewhere as we are going to buy the new Uppababy Vista 2015 model for our travel system!!

persepolis123 · 17/10/2014 09:29

I’ve still not really got a bump yet despite the sonographer at the 3 scans I’ve had so far all emphasising what a good size baby is. I guess I’m just carrying the same as I did with DS – all baby and not much fluid.

Christina h&m are well known for their sizing being too small. The shop assistants usually say that you should buy two sizes bigger than you would normally so I doubt you are that big.

I always thought cot bumpers are fine until baby becomes mobile and starts trying to pull them off, then you are supposed to remove them. DS still had them on until he moved into his big boy bed because he never tried to touch them or pull them so I had no concerns.

Great news on the scans Ellizardo 3is and pink. Can’t wait til mine but it’s not until the 29th. Hopefully all is well and they will be able to confirm the sex. I had a private scan at 16 weeks and they said girl but didn’t seem too sure so I’m not convinced. No girly clothes will be bought until after 20 weeks.

MGFM DS's room is yellow. We also wanted yellow regardless of whether it was a boy or girl. Just as well now we will have two possibly opposite sex and they have to share a room.

junkfoodaddict · 17/10/2014 10:52

there are lots of things that have sad stories attached to them (apparently dropside cots banned in the US because some babies have got their heads caught between the mattress and the drop side but it was also found parents had not assembled the cots correctly) but in the grand scheme of things, sad stories are still very rare. You hear of stories of toddlers killed by falling TVs, chest of drawers, falling down the stairs etc, etc. Everything comes with a risk but when some stories are highlighted by the press they suddenly become a death trap and parents panic. How many babies do you know killed by a cot bumper? If you ask most people, they probably decorated their children's cot with a bumper and they themselves may have slept in one with a bumper but out of the millions of children out to bed with one, it is an extreme minority who sadly die.
As a parent you need to make your own choices based on facts, your own opinions and your state of mind should you decide to use a bumper. I used a bumper with William and the only 'odd' thing he did was to turn on his front whilst in a sleep bag, turn sideways with his leg end sticking out the bumper bars! Just like with other stuff, I will probably have my own concerns but I make up my own mind not based on everything Zi read but also common sense, chance and my own anxiety levels.

Lifeisabeach · 17/10/2014 11:11

I don't really see what's to be gained by using a cot bumper? I didn't use them for either DC and never had any issues. What are the benefits of using them? If I can't see any benefits, then the risks, however small, are enough for me to decide not to use them.

persepolis123 · 17/10/2014 11:40

The main reason I used a cot bumper is because DS’s room is right at the top of our stairs and in winter there is a draught come up the stairs from the front door so the bumpers helped keep it out.

I think the advice not to use them however well intentioned is a bit hysterical tbh. If I listened to every piece of advice out there not to do this or that I would be a nervous wreck and never go anywhere or do anything. I agree that common sense is needed but again it's down to the parents and what they think is right for them and their child.

DurhamRed · 17/10/2014 11:41

Hi Lotsoftoast sorry for late reply has been busy here (admitted to hospital again for fifth time...hg has to end soon surely!?!).

The purpless tops I have are a soft stretchy jersey type material. Very comfy indeed and easy to wash.I'd happily buy a few more as I get bigger.

Lifeisabeach · 17/10/2014 11:52

I haven't seen any hysterical advice. Just that they are not recommended as they may be a risk factor for SIDS. I know we can't eliminate all risks for our babies but if I see advice saying something is not recommended, because there is a risk associated, then I'm inclined to follow it.
