I'm expecting the weight gain thing at my next appointment, Twiglet - I'm still less than I was before conceiving (although I had plenty extra to start with so I suspect that's why...)

Am fairly sure the NHS only do the 12 and 20 week scans as a norm.

Am slightly miffed that our antenatal classes are outside of work time - DH works for the NHS so he'd get them as paid time off but the only thing either of us will be missing for them will be my Brownie meetings.

ladydolly · 17/06/2014 13:59

Twiglet although I'm showing quite a lot now at first I was worried I'd also just get lumpier and squidgier but it's a definite bump shape now, you can barely see my little pot belly on the bottom now which was putting me off all the stretchy maternity clothes my more toned little sister gave me. It'll happen and probably quicker than you imagine.

Also, when I first felt movements I was on the sofa hunched over writing on the coffee table and I still find I feel it more when in that position. I can't feel anything when I lay down even though I do get the odd kick now and again when I'm sitting at my desk.

Scan at 4pm on Thursday so think I'll be last reporting back. Everyone has their money on it being a girl including me and DP so could be shocks all round if it's a boy!

mismylinford · 17/06/2014 14:08

its a girl!!
had the scan this morning all is well with her healthy growing little one!
can't believe im going to have two daughters eeek!!!
dh quickly and since very manly said
"only real men make girls"
dd was first to know and is over the moon she was very good and sat their watching making cute little comments 'i really love our baby mum!'
we got 8 pictures (only supposed to get 5) for £5. not very good though all abit blurry and ghost like but dosnt matter.. its a girl!!!

kate393 · 17/06/2014 14:10

MrsDowney glad today is a better day for you. And hope the car isn't going to cost too much...main thing is you're ok though.
amy83 i think nhs in england at least is just 12 and 20 weeks for scans, unless MW is concerned or wants to check growth nearer the end. I only had the 2 last time on nhs and then a private 4d one near the end.
Thought I was feeling movement the last week but for the last couple of days, nothing...however not worrying too much as its still early.
Exciting for all those with scans this week....seems to be lots of you....mine feels so far away...not til 18th july!!!
I thought second time round would be much less worrying but I'm finding the opposite is true!

kate393 · 17/06/2014 14:11

congrats mismylinford, cross posted there.

Alita7 · 17/06/2014 14:19

alita - i'm irish living in scotland.

i will be having a 30 week and a 36 week scan too. Maybe as i'm an older homebirther??

excuse my memory but are there 3 of us planning homebirths? (on my last antenatal thread there were 3 unplanned homebirths though so we could end up with more Grin )

DD is so excited at thought of home birth - especially as we will be having a birthing poo,l. I think she has visions of it being like a swimming pool in our front room though with her and i backcrawling together through labour:-]

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 17/06/2014 16:10

Hi all my scan isn't til 8th July day before 20wks while am there want to change my consultant app as realised it is 34wks for a 30wk app it's for the vbac clinic I don't want n can't medically have a vaginal birth without repercussions anyway n just want to see a consultant so they can say yep n give me a date earliest can do that is 30wks easier to sort myself as midwife hasn't a clue about my gynae condition despite being my midwife last time I couldn't be arsed to explain it again as it obviously wasn't that important for her to retain the information!! Last thing I want is an appointment with junior doc explaining how wonderful a vbac delivery will be as wastes their time n mine. (Last pregnancy I was booked in at 18wks saw 2 junior docs n they said why do u think u need a section middle class people reading nice guidelines rarara n I said do u actually know what my condition is they both said yes so I said please explain which they stumbled through n I just said I am having a section I was upset which then makes me angry they went off to speak to senior doc who said come back at 30wks I did saw consultant who didn't even question me said of course u do explained risks etc did pre OP paperwork job done)

blamber · 17/06/2014 16:14

Congrats misslinford!

There's no scan after the 20 one unless there's a reason. Eg hypothyroidism, scan at 32 weeks. Low papp- a, scans at 28, 32, 36 and I'm not sure after that too?

Today was the first time I've had to unbutton my trousers! And I'm sure I've felt little kicks now and again! Grin

weeonion · 17/06/2014 16:14

congrats misslinford!!

booksshoescats · 17/06/2014 16:22

Hi everyone. So rubbish at keeping up - just can't seem to get time to post, although trying to lurk as much as possible. Congratulations on all the scans so far. Mine's tomorrow, and hoping for confirmation of a girl, as indicated from the Harmony at 12 weeks (will be a bit of a shock if it was wrong!).

Had a cardiac scan for the baby last Friday as they picked up a heart murmur at 12 weeks but all looks to have resolved itself.

She's kicking away, as I've just had 2nd lunch, and she likes to be fed - always lots of movement after eating. Is everyone feeling lots of movement now? Mine's really ramped up in the last week - DD even felt her on the outside the other evening - she was VERY excited Grin.

blamber - first time you've had to unbutton your trousers? Good grief! I'm the size of a house already - I've contemplated starting to lie about how many weeks I am as I don't want to frighten them!

weeonion - I'm thinking of another home birth too. The thing is, I'm almost superstitious, as it all went so well last time I'm a bit nervous of doing it again.

I'm older (42 next week), but where I am they don't do anything differently unless you have other risk factors (so no extra scans or mw visits), so I've booked a wellbeing scan at the FMC, where I had my Harmony, for 34 weeks.

StripeyFox · 17/06/2014 16:34

Yup, I'm booked for a homebirth too- was there a third person? I'm also planning on having a pool, which I'm pretty excited about! I heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time today, which really made my day, amazing. Another 2+ weeks till scan though.

I'm back on 12.5 hour shifts and have my first night shifts in a while this week...will be interested to see how I cope with them. I expect I'll be fine because I'm feeling pretty good, but that may change at 7am after being on my feet all night in a rather
hot environment! How are the other shift workers in the group getting on?

StripeyFox · 17/06/2014 16:37

Hi books, ah, you're the other possible homebirther! Glad to hear your last one went so well.

booksshoescats · 17/06/2014 17:15

Wow, 12-hour shift-work - that is hardcore, StripeyFox. I'm going to stop whingeing about sitting at a desk 9-5 with occasional forays to another floor!

Interesting to hear that you and weeonion have already booked your homebirth. They're supportive where I am but don't let you actually book till much later - basically until they know that you are definitely low risk, so no pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, all those things that often don't show up till final trimester. Last time I didn't book mine till 35 weeks, and they don't let you visit the MLU till then, either.

weeonion - remind me, how old is your dd? Sorry if we've already had this conversation, but I'm interested as I'm not sure how my dd (5) would handle being around when I give birth. I'm really undecided as to whether to arrange for her to go to family or friends (if I do plump for hb this time - may go for MLU, which didn't exist last time so wasn't an option). Another friend's four-year-old slept through the whole thing when she had a hb, but it all feels a bit too unpredictable to me at the moment, and I wonder if it might stress me a bit not knowing if it might upset her.

Alita7 · 17/06/2014 17:22

Books is there anyone like your mum, sister or a close friend who you wouldn't mind being in the house when you give birth but who isn't essential? They could be there we dd to explain things and make sure she's looked after so no one who is needed to help will have to look after her. They could also take her out or to their house for a bit or for the whole thing if things get distressing for her?

I think it could be a good experience for her, both to be included in the birth by being there and by being able to see their sibling straight away, as well for a female child I think it's also a good way to teach them about things for their potential future. But you don't want her stuck there, getting in the way or taking support away from you when you need it.

Hi everyone!

MrsDowney - sorry to hear about your bad day, I hope it all goes well tomorrow. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Alita - my scan is at 11.30 on Thursday.

Twiglet - I am not feeling any movement either (20 weeks today). It is really stressing me out but I think I have an anterior placement. At the 12 week scan she did mention that the placenta was at the front, I assume this is the same thing? I didn't know about it at the time so didn't question it. I have had a few sensations this week which I have wondered if they are movements, but I can't be sure. I'm really looking forward to the scan this week to see if all is ok but after my car accident, I am really nervous that I might get bad news on Thursday.

Mismylinford - congratulations! Another girl, how lovely :)

Countdown to the scan now, I am so nervous! Less than 48 hours to go.

Annarose2014 · 17/06/2014 18:04

stripeyfox I'm nursing and I got excused by my consultant from nights at 16 wks. Tbh, I'm finding my 13 hr days horrendous and am totally wiped. Dying for maternity leave!

amy83firsttimer · 17/06/2014 18:51

Forgot to say, my scan is week on Wednesday (25th) so getting very excited as I didn't get to hear heartbeat at 16 week appt so haven't had any reassurance of existence since 12 week scan other than rapidly expanding waistline gut!

I got on the scales yesterday and have gone from exactly 9 stone to exactly 10 stone at exactly 19 weeks (round number fan!)

Venus2 · 17/06/2014 20:17

My gums have started bleeding each time I do my teeth. Been going on a week now. Had a look on Google and it freaked me out a little. Anyone have any experience with this? How do I make it stop?

weeonion · 17/06/2014 20:59

hopeful - anterior placenta is at the front so that could be why you are not detecting much movement. looking forward to hearing your scan news.

stripey - you meet your homebirth midwife today? what was she like (she could well be at my labour if caroline is off/ at another birth!)

books - my dd is 7. she wants to be around and knows pretty much everything that is going to happen. we are really open with her about bodies / body parts etc and she knows exactly where the baby will be coming out with fluids etc. we have talked about noise , pain etc and her and dp have had lengthy chats about how i was last time (there are chunks of time -especially the last couple of hours that are a blur to me.). She loves the story of when i asked DP how a cow had got into the flat as i heard a low mooing only to be told by hm that it was actually me. she knows that i could be focused very much on myself and not able to give her attention. She knows she can go to a friends house at any time, can be in another room and doesnt have to stay for the whole process. Who knows what it will be like.

I am also having a doula for added support - for us all.

we get booked into homebirth at the of dating scan and from that point on, that team gives our care. we can opt back into the birthing centre if we want and obviously if it is decided that we become high risk - things will change. the mw said that if an emergency arises - i would be in hospital within 8 or 9 minutes - about the same time as transfer within units so reassuring!

oh lawks - even typing that made my stomach do a double flip!!!

amy83firsttimer · 17/06/2014 21:00

I've had bleeding gums before but not during pregnancy. I think your blood gets thinner? Am I just making this up???!!!??? Dunno. Maybe post on main pregnancy board and see what gets said.

Mathssssteacher123 · 17/06/2014 21:07

Congrats on all scan news.
Mrs Downey- hope tomorrow goes ok and you feel reassured must be horrible.

Venus- I have bleeding gums too I also had it when I was pregnant with ds1 but completely stopped once I'd had him another crappy pregnancy related ailment.
Alita- my scan is at 4.30 so going to be the last of the day!!!

I'm so ready for maternity leave shame it feels like an age until it will begin!

amylou85 · 17/06/2014 21:33

Bleeding gums is a big side effect of pregnancy which is one of the reasons why they make all dental treatment free during it. I have been having them for about 3 weeks and keep thinking I must book in to get checked. Frustrating but it is perfectly normal for pregnancy, just make sure you get seen by your dentist while it's free x

amylou85 · 17/06/2014 21:35

6 In response to Venus!
