non-first timers for flat sheets would you get crib size or cot size so they will fit cot when you upgrade?

fifi669 · 31/05/2014 21:30

I'd buy both!

We just had our carpets cleaned with a rug doctor. When DS was small, DP left out the sudocrem and it went everywhere. Despite all the scrubbing in the world those patches attract dirt now. Cream carpets too! The stains didn't come our but the surrounding area is cleaner making it even more noticeable! Plus the carpet is now starting to bump in places..... Grrr

mummytobejuly2014 · 31/05/2014 23:45

daft Q on mattress protectors - yes or no? we have the mothercare hyde crib supposedly will last baby for first 5/6 months. mattress has vents/holes in it - does putting a mattress protector on prevent that ventilation or raise a cotdeath risk?
what if I used two fitted/flat sheets instead of 1 with a protector?
am I being daft?
also we're supposed to put baby feet to base of crib, why are the holes/vents up near top pf mattress?
I know cot bumpers are now discouraged but does anyone have any experience of the "airwraps" - are they a waste of £25 when bought new? is a baby likely to get a limb stuck in between the bars?

icklekid · 01/06/2014 02:25

Like fifi have hired a rug doctor for the day and was very easy to use- dh had to take it up/down stairs for me (bad spd and quite heavy) but very effective!

mummy I wish I had a clue! Our moses basket new mattress arrived today have got some sheets for it and not going to get cot mattress until need it- do you mean mattress protector to protect from wetness getting through?

auntie I would be cheap and buy the bigger ones to last longer I think!

Made it back home after 4 1/2h drive (better than 6h going down!) through which baby managed to get itself in very awkward position- bottom right up in ribs and kicking/stretching out. When sat for long periods of time not comfortable! Nice to be home though, my bed is do comfy...still awake at 2am though Sad

BlueC2 · 01/06/2014 03:15

Dear restless and twitchy legs, please just STOP twitching as I would really really like to get to sleep-it's now 3am :(

auntie I know this doesn't strictly answer your question but I would always go for fitted sheets over flat-the last thing you want if changing after an 'incident' in the middle of the night is to be getting the corners tucked right! Also less chance of it moving if you have a wriggler :) If the flat sheets are for a top layer or swaddling then I'd be tempted to get the rigjt size for the bed-cot size would be huge in a crib or on a newborn.

mummy we didn't use a bumper with DS after I'd read about the risks and aside from the odd occasion he's not really managed to get a limb stuck, though it has happened. This time around I have looked at the airwrap system which does look v impressive and did v nearly buy it.

So legs are twitching, brain awake but body exhausted- just want to sleep!! Legs are driving me insane! Grrrr

BlueC2 · 01/06/2014 03:20

Ps those expecting DC2+ who already have a toddler- what are you doing about. A pushchair? I've bought a buggyboard for DS to use but now worried he either won't like it/use it or will just want to wander off the whole time. Even on eBay doubles are pricey and I wouldn't be able to attach baby's car seat to most of them. Haven't got £200 to spare but seriously wondering if we should somehow get a double. Any thoughts anyone?

SmallOlympianBear · 01/06/2014 08:02

Blue we've been thinking about this too. DD is 2 next month and still needs a push-chair, especially as it's where she has her day-time nap! I'm planning to carry the baby in a Moby or Close Caboo so DD can still have the pushchair. However, we have also bitten the bullet and bought a single to double conversion pushchair as I think we'll still need it. Oh, also have been loaned a buggy board. Have you tried looking on Gumtree? I've seen some reasonable Phil and Teds doubles on there..

SmallOlympianBear · 01/06/2014 08:09

Also, a question for the 40+ folk :) Have you been advised to be induced at term, and if so, what do you plan to do? Have been thinking about induction at term vs going a little while over, but I'm curious about what others have been told about monitoring (and limitations thereof). The main issue, as I understand, is related to a slightly elevated statistical age-related risk of placenta deterioration. My gut instinct tells me to go over (given that the baby is not more prompt) but of course I don't want to run additional risks...

Plateofcrumbs · 01/06/2014 08:30

I'm assuming mattress protectors are a must, and am going for fitted sheets for ease and also wondering if safer too? Am planning to get a Moses basket, bedside crib and a cotbed - is that overkill?

Went out for dinner last night and didn't get home til 2am, then up at 6am as DH is doing a triathlon this morning. Currently flopped in a camping chair waiting to cheer him on. Think an afternoon nap might be needed later!

icklekid · 01/06/2014 08:44

Wow I'm impressed plate I would still be asleep!

I have moses basket and then cot bed will just miss out the bedside crib stage but if you've got one and room for it why not!

ItsAlwaysBetterOnHoliday · 01/06/2014 08:56

plate we've ended up with that combination without meaning to - we bought an IKEA cot bed for the baby's room, a friend lent us a bedside co-sleeping cot (which we plan to use at first) and then my great aunt kindly bought us a 2nd hand Moses basket which she reupholstered! It's a bit much in a tiny flat but I guess the baby now has multiple options for where he wants to sleep... And we can use the Moses basket for naps in the living room.

AuntieMaggie · 01/06/2014 09:17

plate we've ended up with crib, Moses basket and cot bed too as we already had the first, someone bought us the second. And I agree at how good you are watching DH that early!

Yes flat sheets are for laying over baby rather than mattress as it may be too hot for blankets come July....

mummy the holes are at the top to increase air circulation around the head afaik. In which case a mattress protector does seem to conflict wi th this... Most of the mums I know never used anything like bumpers so I'm not going to bother as we never had a problem with nieces either.

Devilforasideboard · 01/06/2014 09:57

Apologies for butting in, I was on the July 2013 thread and thought I'd pop in for a nostalgic nosey. Anyhoo, just wanted to say to mummy that the Airwrap bumpers are brilliant - totally breathable but stop feet etc getting through the bars and make it more comfortable when baby decides to sleep with face squashed up against the bars. I'd go for the more cushioned version rather than just the mesh if I were you (just as breathable but comfier). Also you will definitely need a mattress protector, even two sheets won't cut it against puke, leaky nappies etc etc. Baby shouldn't be sleeping face down anyway so plenty of chance for air to circulate.

I shall bugger off now but best of luck to you all and enjoy your squidgy babies when they come Smile

ismarah · 01/06/2014 10:59

We have one cot bed. No moses basket, no crib, nothing. Also no changing table and no specifically 'baby' clothes storage. I'm trying to be minimal about the amount of stuff we get as we don't have room despite being in a 3bed house! The council has been dicking us around for the last 5 months, it looks like we won't be building our extension this year. DH and I both work from home and so bean is stuffed for space if we want to earn any money to pay for bean / extension / life.

We do however have a bumper (!), fitted and flat sheets and a mattress protector. The protector we got is supposed to go across the mattress perpendicular to it so that it's never under bean's head, only her lower half. So it would be moved around as she grows and checked every time I make the bed. The bumper is supposed to be fitted before the mattress is put in place so that it doesn't budge. But then we also don't have to use it just because we got it..

Might go practice my Swedish and read all their baby advice..

That is interesting about cot bumpers. I was stressing out as I couldn't find one to go with my 'under-the-sea' nursery theme Smile

sorry to hear things are so upside down hayley. I agree with the others in suggesting may be get DS to spent some time with your friends and use them in emergency. I'm sure they will be able to spoil and distract him with icecreams, tele etc. I don't have any children but had to baby sit DH's nephews once in emergency for 2 days and they don't like being away from their mum at all. Anyway, they cried a lot for the first hour but then I started with the auntie bribes and we were BFFs by the end of the day Smile

blue hope the leg twitching gets better. Just a thought...would an antihistamine help before bed?

mixi I have OC. I've got large ugly scabs on my legs, back, neck etc from itching. Another cause of itching can be slightly high BP. Don't know which one is the lesser of the two evil. Hope you don't have either. Have you changed any toiletries etc?

zing yyyaayyy you are back

mixi82 · 01/06/2014 15:13

coco not changed toiletries and I itch even with no clothes on so thought it's not fabrics or soap powder.

My blood pressure has always been low but it was slightly raised when I went to MW last. I've been putting stacks of E45 on which helps. The warmer weather doesn't help though, if I get warm then it's so much worse.

How long did it take to get your bloods back? I had mine taken Friday morning.

Are you still delivering baby early too? I've read loads online about OC but Internet can make things seem worse than it is

Plateofcrumbs · 01/06/2014 15:49

Blimey! We have the first baby in our NCT group. EMCS at (I think) 33 weeks.

Mum was worried by reduced movement, went in for monitoring - they whisked her straight into theatre. Cord wrapped round neck, they think the baby would only have survived a few more hours.

All seem to be doing OK in the circumstances. I feel quite shellshocked -they were SO close to tragedy, only instinct that something wasn't right saved their baby. Just...wow - gives me chills thinking about it.

liquidstatehasrisenagain · 01/06/2014 16:26

Plate blimey that was very lucky!!

Am suffering nighttime itches on feet but nowhere else. I get excema there though so suspect it related.

Am 41 years old and definitley being induced at 39 - 40 weeks, I want it our ASAP, its not comfortable to go over and baby will be ready.

NancyinCali · 01/06/2014 16:49

Re double pushchairs: I just bought one (the city select) as I don't think dd1 (will be 2.4 when baby arrives) will walk or stay on a board reliably. I bought new (but the old model) and it seems to have a good resale value.

BlueC2 · 01/06/2014 18:05

Nancy I was looking at the city select last night- I like all the different combination options with it. Also texted my SIL this morning as she had mentioned we might be able to have their hardly used P+T (I'm not a big fan of them but for free I'd put aside concerns!) but she hasn't got back to me yet-i have a feeling she may have offered it to her sister who's due with DC1 in Oct.

Not suprisingly after last nights lack of sleep I am sooo tired today-made worse by DH doing an extra shift at work today and me being on DS duty all day.

AuntieMaggie · 01/06/2014 18:07

I'm suffering the nighttime itchy feet same as Liquid which I'm blaming on my feet being really dry due to only being able to wear flip flops. Was really humid last night and when it gets like that I can't sleep and then everything irritates me!

plate how scary hope they're ok.

35 weeks here... 2 more weeks and then I'm full term according to MW...

Have got just about everything now and DP gave the pram a good clean so apart from flat sheets (have to go out of our way to buy them as none of the closest places sell them just the fitted ones!) we're about ready!

Incapinka · 01/06/2014 19:17

Golly Plate. So glad everything ok. Does put everything in perspective. I am grumpy today as 5 more weeks (+ the additional overdue week I am expecting) seems like forever at the moment but would prefer for the bump to hang in there a bit longer and not have such a traumatic introduction to the world. Thank goodness she went in to get checked.

How did your DH get on in his tri? Mine has been off cycling for 5 hours today and then off for a run. Am getting rather sick of this 6 days a week training. Tbh I think he is a little too but I have no sympathy!

Incapinka · 01/06/2014 19:18

Oh and this may be tmi but does anyone else have really itchy nipples?! I didn't first time round but this time. Good god!! Guessing they are remembering the hammering they got last time...!

fifi669 · 01/06/2014 20:51

Yep me too!

mummytobejuly2014 · 01/06/2014 21:04
