Big congrats!!! All feeling very real now that we are getting past those crucial first scans

amy83firsttimer · 04/05/2014 23:45

Back in the room.... Festival good, slightly worried that camping in subzero temperatures might not have been the best thing ever but just reassured myself that Eskimos have babies and they're fine so I should just man up. Official 12 week scan Tuesday so I can reassure myself that I've done the bean no damage. Saw bean at 9ish weeks privately so excited rather than worried though that could change . Congratulations to all with good scans over the last few days and hugs to those struggling with depression / anxiety. Xxxx

My parents gave me a copy of a magazine called "Gurgle" last night (for a joke). I can heartily unrecommend it - it's a glossy selection of adverts and adorable three-year-olds with their own fashion sense.

Does anybody else have a navel piercing, and what are you doing with it? I've heard there are pregnancy bars you can use but I don't know if it would be better just to take it out and have it re-done afterwards?

amy83 Unless you got hypothermic then the bean should have been quite snug, even if you were slightly chilly!

Miskate · 05/05/2014 11:33

Posy, I'd had a mini mace complete with realistically sharp spikes in my belly button since I was 15, so 13 years. At approx week 6 it came straight out as it was so uncomfortable, more due to the design than anything else. I'm not putting anything else in for pregnancy as the preg bars look really ugly (as opposed to a mace??), and I don't think it will close up. The hole feels so weird though without my little metal friend. Might go and repierce my nose to make myself feel cool again.

Does anyone else keep losing the thread on their app? Every so often I log in and it says I'm not on any threads and then I have to search to find you all again. I'm on Android.

Misslaughalot - lovely scan pic :) Congratulations

mismylinford · 05/05/2014 11:56

Posy, unfortunately took mine out with my first and he never worn it again.. I have a lovely stretch mark running up my tummy from the hole too. 4 years and noamount of bio oil has help sigh. But i used to have a lovely flat tummy to show off.. Not so after a baby Haha! Hoping this one dosnt make more mess of tummy ... Doubt it. Dh calls them mummy marks.. At least he tires.

mismylinford · 05/05/2014 11:58

Miskate i had a cob web one things we did as kids! I kept them all as a reminder.

alita7 · 05/05/2014 12:19

my belly is pierced and it's my fave piercing so I don't want to loose it I'm thinking of getting a plastic maternity bar as I get bigger not sure when.
I've got a few in my ears other than lobes so I might get plastic bars for them and change them near to edd.

Annarose2014 · 05/05/2014 12:30

The doppler is already one of the best things ever. I wasn't going to bother using it for a while as it did the job of reassuring me this week, but this morning DH wanted to use it.

I've realised that its the first thing thats making him feel fascinated with the baby. He has been amazing at taking care of me all along, but it was like he was taking care of a sick wife, rather than a pregnant one, iykwim.

Or like he was taking care of a single mother. I dunno, hard to explain - it was like it was MY baby, not HIS baby or OUR baby. It was me he was taking care of, not me & his child.

I didn't mind as we talked about it and he said that'd prob come when it started kicking, but now it seems the Doppler has started that process already!

He was listening this morning with the biggest smile on his face. Of course he was making jokes "Its like The Hunt for Red October!" But I could tell he has finally started to think of the baby as a real entity. Afterwards he was saying things like "there's three of us now".

Best purchase ever!

alita7 · 05/05/2014 12:36

Anna they're brilliant aren't they and it's lovely that it's got your dp to feel it's real!

I use mine once a day and it was great letting the kids listen when we told them :) Last night I did it just before sleep, in bed and dp didn't want me to turn it off as he was falling asleep to it :p

haventgotaclue1 · 05/05/2014 14:04

Hi, I've just found this thread and as I'm due towards end of November (don't have 12 week scan til 12th May when just over 12 weeks) thought I'd join you all Smile

I'm a complete novice at all this and I'm pretty nervous (being a bit older - 38) but getting more excited...is eating a ton of pork pies normal? Grin

mismylinford · 05/05/2014 14:09

Getting more concerned ladies... Anyone else have a big aching pain down there? To me it feels like a big hard tennis ball just above my bladder... Felt is a while but its bad today. Help?

Hopeful83 · 05/05/2014 14:20

Not a pain specifically like that Linford but I do get lots of random crampy type pains and sometimes sharp pains. if you're worried give your midwife a call tomorrow, I'm sure she'll be able to reassure you

Annarose2014 · 05/05/2014 14:26

haventgotaclue welcome! I'm 39 & its my first time so I don't know what I'm doing either!

I was crippled with nerves up till now but finally feel they're abating now. 14 wks today!

alita7 · 05/05/2014 14:37

I also get random stretchy, mild cramps, and I've had the odd sharp pain too. I wouldn't worry too much, despite this I can still find the heartbeat and hear the placenta so it sounds like all is well- I think it's probably normal stretching, especially as the uterus is starting to grow much more rapidly and push things out of the way. Ask your midwife if you get worried?
I can also feel what seems like my uterus :)

Welcome haventgotaclue! :)

This may seem like a ranty post and I don't want to seem judgemental- but we went to a family fun day at a local park yesterday and had a good time together, but I saw things that horrified me (sorry if it sounds judgemental) and something which made me think a bit.

I saw a 2 or 3 year old with his ear pierced- I wouldn't pierce a girls ears that young unless it was a cultural thing, though I think it's more justifiable as it's likely they would choose to have it done as most girls do- but to do it to a boy is so chavvy and unnecessary in my opinion!!

I saw an obviously 7-8 months pregnant woman smoking- I was shocked, there is no way I would smoke and I was a smoker before hand, although I did cut down a lot when ttc. If I really couldn't give up I wouldn't stand in plain view of people at a fun day, I'd be ashamed and try and do it discreetly!

My friend had her 21 month old with her and he got absolutely filthy- he was enjoying himself and she didn't clean him up- this raised a question for me, could I do that?? I can see why- he was having fun, why ruin it, he wasn't eating or anything, but I think I'd struggle to not wipe every stain off my child :P is that too protective?

Also on laptop and saw all the lovely scan pics- congrats :)

Annarose2014 · 05/05/2014 15:52

alita I was in Mothercare the other day and there was a mum with a 3/4 year old boy. He saw something he wanted and started screaming "I NEEEED IT! I NEEEED IT!" She was just ignoring him, and I was a bit taken aback cos he was roaring the shop down.

Then got really angry andscreamed at her "I FUCKING NEED IT!" Shock

She just mildly shhhed him.

I was so horrified (a toddler swearing like that!) that I had a bit of a parenting-panic! What if our toddler swears in Mothercare??!

haventgotaclue1 · 05/05/2014 16:07

Hi Annarose Good know I'm not the only one! Must admit, when I went to my first midwife appointment it was quite obvious that I was by far the oldest person in the waiting room, I almost felt a bit intimidated by it all (which is totally unlike me) - am blaming it on hormones having a party Wink

PosyFossilsShoes · 05/05/2014 16:08

Sorry Anna but that's just made me laugh out loud! Grin

I'm going to enjoy laughing while I can. I hope our toddler doesn't swear in Mothercare (or nursery, or anywhere else) but I'm sure s/he will do something else equally awful. I saw a toddler proudly take his trousers down and wee in a display potty at Ikea once. Grin

alita7 · 05/05/2014 16:13

Haha anna- I hope hope hope my baby doesn't learn swear words- I will try not to swear in front of them anyway. Posy he probably thought he was being a good boy!

weeonion · 05/05/2014 17:14

HI haventgotaclue. Congrats to you. There are a few other "older" mums on this thread. Smile

Hahaha at cross cursing toddler! I have seen plenty of things that have made me raise an eyebrow but then again - no doubt many have tutted at things i have done with my DD. One thing about being a mum - there will always be people who wouldnt do the same as ourselves but hey - it takes all sorts! Smile

Ailta - i honestly dont know what the term chavvy means? i have of course seen it used in different places and in different ways but have never really got what it means. Its not a term used where i am originally from and not really used up here in Scotland?

PosyFossilsShoes · 05/05/2014 17:34

[feeds through Scottish Babelfish]

A chav appears to be a ned north of Hadrian's wall.

weeonion · 05/05/2014 17:43

aah - but then again - what is a ned other than a term for a certain kind of poor person??? Even when i ask people up here to clarify what "ned" means - no-one really knows!!

ladydolly · 05/05/2014 17:51

It used to stand for 'Council House And Violent' but I think its got a wider criteria now!

weeonion · 05/05/2014 17:58

Thank you lady dolly.

I was in mamas and papas today looking at prams / buggies. Didnt last too long as overwhelmed / underwhelmed by what i saw and no clearer than when i went in! For anyone who does know what they want - they have a 10% discount at the minute...

pinkgirlythoughts · 05/05/2014 18:10

Alita, you might swear more than you realise... I'm an Infant teacher and DH is a sports coach, so we both work with children, and therefore make an effort not to use swear words, even at home, but I'll never forget DS, then aged about 18 months, knocking over the ironing board in the corner of the room and shouting "oh shit! Shit shit SHIT!"
We don't say shit any more Grin
