Mrs Blobby - nice to have you back - tell us all what is the best position to sit in then... you can't not tell us now!

Hope you can make it on the 3rd.

MrsBlobby · 22/09/2006 17:24

Well, you need to sit in a really inelegant way, basically on the edge of a seat that has no arms, with your legs wide apart, effectively sitting on your 'front bottom'!!!

See, the baby needs to do a little turn. It comes down the birth canal in a vertical direction, then it needs to do a 90 degree turn and it actually comes out your vagina front ways. Therefore, by actually sitting ON your vagina, you are effectively straightening out that turn, which encourages the head (the heaviest part of the baby) to come down and rest on the actual cervix, and so engaging.

And, the interesting thing the MW also told us is that a lot of the thinning out of the cervix can be done well in advance of the actual labour, in some cases, weeks before. The cervix needs to first thin and only then will it be in a position to actually open.

By sitting in that position either on a chair or a birthing ball, the head rests on the cervix, becomes engaged and then the weight of the baby presses on the cervix and starts it thinning out. Then, when you go into actual labour, it just has to open - easy peasy!!!! Well, that's what I'm telling myself, anyway!

Good luck to you all - enjoy your new seating positions!

welcome back Mrs Blobby and Gemmitygem and hello pmoore. I am having a day shopping at Bluewater on Wednesday ashave a stack of family birthdays in Oct-sister, husband, MIL, SIL. BIL cannot believe we are adding to the expense of an already costly month with another family birthday! Hope I can make it round the shops OK. If my waters break will be rushing to M&S hoping to get some vouchers!

I didn't use any of the scratch mitts last time. I hate cutting new borns finger nails-they are so tiny.

I was even dreaming about nursing bras last night so think it is time I went out and got a few.

I really don't want to be induced again so if I am late was thinking I may give acupuncture a try. Those who know, how do you pick a reputable one? And when so you start going (I am 37 weeks) And what about reflexology-is that supposed to work too?

My sister bought DD a Christmas pudding outfit so wouldn't be surprised if she bought us the pumpking outfit. DH moaned like mad about the Xmas pudding so don't suppose he will be pleased with the pumpkin equivalent!

As for bedroom aerobics-NO CHANCE!!!

pmoore-try not to worry about the baby's size. One of my closet friends had a baby that was nearly 10pounds and she had a dream birth with no pain relief and was up and about in no time. And look at Davina-ten pounder delivered at home!!

totallyfloaty35 · 22/09/2006 20:20

hi all, nice to see you again Gem,just saw mw,baby has engaged,my BP is up though as been really stressed today, panic about state of house not being organised, got so worked up earlier i was sick.

youngmum21 · 22/09/2006 20:29

Hi all,

I haent been on for a while and there is loads to catch up on!!!
Congratulations wiffy!!!!
Can some one add m,e to the list my baby is due on the 29th oct and im have a girl its my first sorry not sure how to!!!!!!
Im sick of being pregnant aswell all the aches and pains are driving me crazy!!!!!

girlygale1 · 22/09/2006 22:16

Hi everyone, still fat, still fed up, still working, still not sleeping ... mind you I did manage 4 hours on the trot last night!!! How chuffed was I!!

Baby is engaged, dd (2.5) disclosed that she is getting married and going to wear a dress ... are they trying to tell me something!!!!!???!!!

Bedroom aerobics stopped about 6 months ago - poor dh!

I didn't use scratch mits with dd - they kept falling off, so we used socks instead - got some fab piccies with her with socks on her hands bless her!!!! But they did the job and stayed on - just remember to take them off before you have the family portraits done!

fed up fed up fed up - want baby out, feel sick on and off, stomach hurts (not contraction hurts though) strong braxton hicks, pelvis hurts, back aches, put on loads of weight .... whinge whinge whinge, oh I'm such a joy to be around at the moment!!! !!!!!!

marthahm · 22/09/2006 23:22

i've added you on girlygale. just escaped from mil who is staying for the weekend. had to make a rapid exit from the kitchen when felt would lose my temper otherwise. i'm just waiting for her to start telling me about massaging my nipples again-am fully armed with info from b.feeding cousellor about how you def. don't do that nowadays, so will be ready for her!
mind you she has knitted some really cute cardigans and a teddybear for the baby so she gets lots of browny points and she does mean well. overheard snippits of conversation between her and dh whilst i was cooking. i'm hoping he was telling her we don't want her to appear at the hospital when the baby arrives but to wait to be called a few days later-all i heard was her saying that they will be staying nearby.
let's hope i keep it together the whole of tomorrow.
dogsmum am def coming to the meet up on 3rd.

AArrgh = can't sleep again!!

Last day of work today, and I think I have too many things going round in my head (including hopsital bags, breastfeeding, things to do next week), but how are you supposed to get up your best strength reserves in preparation for labour if you can't get to sleep - will probably crash out at mid-day

jmcmugwump · 23/09/2006 06:29

Have just finished reading the other posts - what else is ther to do at 5.30 in the am when OH is snoring like a wart hog???

I have scheduled lots of things in for first week, but have decided to do just one thing a day so that I don;t get too bored, Monday get cut & colour, Tuesday Pedicure & bikini line, Wednesday Antenatal class, Thursday shopping pick up huggies changing bag & bio oil and rest on Friday god knows what i will do the following week, might spend some time making healthy and nutritios meals for when we have LO - ha ha - alphabetising the take away menus is more like it - did think about starting on the Xmas cards, but then realised can't sign them from bump and don't know what sex it will be so that has scuppered that idea - might get the relevant lists done though - then when the time does come I won't have to think too much as am fully expecting brain to turn to mush v shortly.

And btw, my midwife said a good way of getting the baby into the right position is to get on all fours and wiggle your bum in the air, particularly when the baby is awake and moving a bit - she didn't however tell me how on earth you are meant to get up off the floor again slowly and very carefully I think is the only answer to that one!!

Gingeme · 23/09/2006 10:42

Good morning ladies. Well I couldnt believe how well I slept last night. Watched a dvd which finnished at 11 went to bed. ds woke about 6am crying(think hes cutting his last back mowlers). I dug dh in the back and told him to go which he did. 10 mins later all was well again.Dropped back off to sleep till about 9am. Cant believe it. So why dont I feel any better for it?
Oh well my parents will be here within the hour so better give the flat a sweep, thank goodness for wooden flooring.
Take Care all.Have a good one xxx

Tigerlion · 23/09/2006 16:42

Feel very excited as I have finally ordered my double buggy ? yippee! How can I hurry this baby along? I keep on getting period type cramps but my SIL told me that she had these for weeks before two of her births. Having been induced last time and having been in hospital with the pre eclampsia for four days before DS was born, I did not experience what it was like to go into real labour, so feel that this is a whole new experience.

One tip I was given last time was to fill in as much of the child benefit form that I could before the baby was born as it is so long. Then that way all you need to fill in when the baby is born is name, DOB and send in a birth certificate. You get something like £16 per week for first baby and a bit less for subsequent babies. It all helps towards those hundreds of nappies, boxes of formula that we may need. The form can be found on this link

Very excited about meeting baby soon and congratulations to those of you who have already met them!

Rumpel · 23/09/2006 17:12

Hi everyone I've added myself to the list although my date is somewhat ambiguous. According to Gp 6th is the day, 2 internet sites say 4th and 5th - I reckon I'll go on the 30th September though hmm we'll see.

Woke at 12pm last night!! A whole 2 hours sleep for me. Can't seem to shake off this cold either. Spent most of today painting the nursery - have gone with a farmyard theme - bought some stickarounds and have painted a farmhouse, fence, barn, pond and trees and clouds and stuff to make it look 'authentic' ho, ho Did want to go to art school when I was at school but awoke to the realisation that I wasn't good enough - I am sure baby won't mind though!

I am having huge braxton hicks now and can feel baby bouncing off my very lower bits - if I am on my feet too long I casn hardly walk due to the pressure down there - so surely i don't have long to go now! I have decided that next week I am going to start working the relevant reflexology and acupoints to get things moving!! Am scared but am also completely pissed off now!

Good morning all...well another night got through without going into labour...period cramps just disappeared and haven't come back. Think may be cos we'd DTD the night before. DH getting a bit suspicious that I'm only after him for his prostaglandins now though and think he feels a bit used... so may be difficult to persuade him back into the bedroom (sorry for TMI!!)
Baby not engaged but apparently normal in 2nd pregnancy - seems to be delighting in moving down into my pelvis then bouncing back out, particularly in the middle of the night...grrr...
Am very sick of people going 'wow, that bump is big' and the like...what do they expect someone who is 9mo pg to look like?! Am terrified that this baby isn't actually going to fit through my pelvis now as it feels very very big. We'll see...
Spent yesterday morning at swimming pool with DD. It is sooooo lovely going swimming and being weightless. Highly recommended activity for fat PG women.
Hope you all have a nice day. We're going shoe shopping for DH so will be ready to commit mass murder/suicide by lunchtime Bye!

Seona1973 · 24/09/2006 09:54

Have finally got round to packing most of my hospital bags - have a small suitcase thing for my stuff and a small bag for babies stuff. If anyone wants any ideas for what to pack then this is what my list looks like:

ME

Birth Plan
Maternity notes
Nighty x 3
Maternity towels x 2 packs
Pants x 5 big pairs
Sports socks (my feet were cold in labour last time)
Lightweight dressing gown
Slippers
Nursing bra x 2
Towel
Breast Pads
Nipple cream
Moist toilet tissues
Lip Salve
Tens Machine
Toiletries(toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, shower gel, shower puff, brush, hair bobbles, face wipes, moisturiser)
Make Up (foundation and lippy - all I will be bothered to put on!!)

I went to Boots and spent my advantage card points on miniature toiletries so I could pack them now and not have to run about with my full size stuff.

BABY

Vests x 3
Bodysuits x 3
Cardigan/Jacket (depending on weather)
Nappies
Wipes and/or cotton wool
Nappy cream
Nappy bags
Portable changing mat
Hat
Scratch mits
Blanket for going home in car seat

I have not sorted out going home clothes for me yet as the trousers I will use will need washing. I will just take baby home in a vest, sleepsuit, jacket as it is too much faffing about to take a special 'going home' outfit with me.

I am now going for a bath and to see if I can still reach my legs to shave them. Gives me heartburn too!! Have a good Sunday everybody and welcome to any newbies to this thread.

Only 2 weeks to go....aaaagggghhh

pmoore · 24/09/2006 10:00

Good morning, Had a good nights sleep only woke up 4 times for the bathroom visit! Having a bad back this morning and braxton hicks-hoping that it will turn into something else. Prob no such luck. Got a funny sensation in my right hand like I can't feel it-don't know what that is all about. May try going for long walk today only thing is remembering that you can walk far one way but you still have to come back!
Hope shopping is not too stressful for you sallyrosie.
Have a good sunday all.
BTW anyone experience their own personal due date different to the dating scan one?

Swizzler · 24/09/2006 16:26

Have been getting period-type pains as well - mw said it was a 'good sign' but not of what! Have also started feeling nauseous again, though not being sick as yet. Fun.

Welcome back MrsBlobby: sounds like you've been busy!

Am also trying to do one thing a day now I'm on leave - also gets me out of the flat.

Packed hospital bag more or less - thanks for reminding me about the lip balm Seona. Trying not to take too much, but all that stuff does need a lot of room! Will leave clothes for coming back from hosp at home and DH can pick them up.

Good news about the kitchen Clon - hope they get a move on now. Do you have plenty to read? I went to the library the other day so reading and knitting now major occupations. I can also rest the book on my bump!

OK, so it's the 3rd - without work diary and cursed with pg brain here .

Gingeme · 24/09/2006 20:48

Goood evening ladies. Well thought things were kicking off last night. Went for a meal with my parents and the baby was realy on the move all night. Then I started getting quite strong peiod type pains and some mega Braxton Hicks contractions. I was just so uncomfortable. Couldnt sleep for about an hour after I went to bed my stomach was rock hard as if I was having one long contraction. Baby had stopped moving by this point and I had a bit of the runs, sorry tmi, but I was sure something was gonna happen. But I eventualy fell asleep and everything is ok today.
Phew I know i wouldnt mind if he came early but...

BENDYB · 24/09/2006 21:01

evening every1, Scary gingeme! I thought something might have been happenin this mornin aswell, yesterday it felt like the baby moved down a bit, I needed a wee every 5 mins! like it was really pressing down, I'm sure his head had moved further down! Then I had like period kinda pains this mornin, It woke me up! Was really strong & my stomach rock hard, stopped after a while tho! I take it that must b braxton hicks?? ooh it was quite scary tho!ur due near me aren't u gingeme?

BENDYB · 24/09/2006 21:03

also i've been feelin very sick in the evenings, Is that a sign that it might b happening soon? I'm sure it wont b just yet but i would like 2 know what signs 2 look out 4!!! lol.

sallyrosie · 24/09/2006 21:31

Ooohhh everyone is getting very exciting symptoms! (apart from me at the minute) Maybe some more birth announcements on the way soon? Just hope those of you having building done get it finished in time...

Has anyone heard from whiffy? Wondered how little Hannah was doing.

Shopping thankfully not too stressful and managed to get pair of work shoes and pair of trainers in the end so won't have to go back for ages hurray!! Hate shopping for DH as he can never find what he is after. Shopping for me OTOH...

Well I am off to lounge in front of the telly now having tried all the usual bringing on labour things today (even managed to get DH back into bed this afternoon while DD napping). Maybe tonight will be the night???

sallyrosie · 24/09/2006 21:33

oh, and for whoever was asking about dates differing - my date from LMP etc was 26th Sept, date from 12 weeks scan was 1st Oct. Don't think its that unusual that they vary a bit, don't think it matters a great deal (apart from when you're begging to be induced/have a sweep and they won't )

Gingeme · 24/09/2006 22:26

Yes Bendyb Im due a day after you. Not sure about the sickness being a sign of labour I know the runs can be. Each baby I ve had Ive been sick during labour and the mw has always said'thats a good sign'. Not sure why though. Just to say one thing dont go by your first twinge as unless your extremely lucky that could happen quite a long while before your last twinge iykwim. Though they do say your show and these Braxton Hicks usualy start about a fortnight before hand but to be honest I only noticed my show with ds no3 and thats because it come away in the bath and I kinda noticed it floating around. My first 2 I didnt notice it it come away.
Re dates this is the very first time my gp my mw and i have ever agreed on my due date! Its always been a few days before or after with my other boys but it is just a rough guide not spot on. Dont worry your little bundle will arrive when its good and ready.

BENDYB · 24/09/2006 22:35

yeah i've heard bout bein sick during labour thats y i thought it might b a sign its gonna happen! But i haven't actually been sick so its prob nothin, & haven't had the runs either, lol!
Yeah i've heard of having braxton hicks for wks before, just coz its my 1st i keep thinkin 'ooh this might b it!'
