For those of us due February 2007 and moving from the first to the second trimester ...

We've made it this far - only another 6 months to go! (Gulp!)

Do any of you think there's just sometimes too much information? We have our 20-week anomaly scan tomorrow and having watched that 'Live Birth' programme last night, I'm now terrified that some serious problem will be discovered with our baby. I feel the baby move all the time now, so if there were a serious defect it would be SO hard to think about a termination. Hopefully it won't come to that and I'm just getting paranoid but I do wish things could be diagnosed earlier to make such decisions a little less traumatic.

Didn't sleep well last night and had awful dreams there was something wrong with the baby - think I'll steer clear of TV programmes about pregnancy/birth from now on! I feel really well and the baby is a real wriggly little thing - surely those are good signs? Had a good nuchal result and heart valves were checked and fine; my AFP blood test came back low risk ... keep telling myself all this but still feel paranoid!

In my mum's day there were no blood tests, scans or diagnostic tests. You had your pregnancy confirmed at the start, and the heartbeat listened to and abdomen prodded a few times, but you had no idea whether all was OK or not until the baby was born. Was ignorance bliss? I'm not sure, but when you read about all the things that could possibly be wrong or go wrong, it makes it hard to relax at any stage during pregnancy.

Just going to keep everything crossed until tomorrow afternoon ...

Hello all

I introduced myself on your Feb sats thread last night.

I watched the live birth program too, and dont think its one of my best ideas so far!

I have my 20 week scan on friday (13th) I will be 21+4....why still call it the 20weeks scan? lol

Excited and scared...all rolled into one!

Been getting some very strong BH's last night and today...think the baby must be moving around alot.

TuttiFrutti · 09/10/2006 13:02

Currantbun, I've got my 20 week scan tomorrow as well and I also saw that programme, so I know what you mean. The worst bit was when that woman said "I'd had a normal pregnancy till that point so I just expected the 20 week scan to be a formality".

But no, I don't think TMI is a bad thing, it's just hard to handle at the time. A friend of mine recently had a very bad 12 week scan result, then went through CVS and finally had a termination. She said at several times in hospital waiting rooms she asked herself whether all the medical knowledge we now have puts us in a better position than our mothers' generation, but ultimately she's glad she knew all the facts.

Fingers crossed for both of us for tomorrow...

CurrantBun · 09/10/2006 14:09

TuttiFrutti, good luck for tomorrow. I guess ultimately I'd rather know if there's something wrong, but it does make going for these scans and tests quite stressful.

Yes - it was at the point where the woman on the programme last night said that she'd had a normal pregnancy until the 20-week scan revealed huge anomalies that I started to panic a bit! I guess we have to keep in mind that generally, you only hear about cases like this as the vast majority of babies are perfectly normal.

I quite enjoyed the live birth thing last night! I found the marvels of modern medicine quite astounding - its truly amazing what can be fixed these days. And it confirmed my inclination towards a natural birth - the whole caesarean thing looked utterly horrendous to me. And didnt the lady who had Caleb have beautiful teeth?! Strange what you notice .....

Good luck with scans tomorrow, fingers crossed for you all. Nxxx

Hi everyone.
I has my 20 week sacn this morning. (I am 21 weeks though) Everything is going really well. The baby is growing placenta good etc so I'm really happy. BUT,... baby kept bottom down out of view and when the sonographer got to it's legs and lower spine he couldn't be sure what it was, so a big surprise for me. We have been saying it would do this all along.
I keep having visions of baby covering itself up in coy comedy fashion.
I was looking forward to geeting a few blue / pink bits too but not to worry. At the moment I love some of the stuff in Jojo maman bebe, the soft rib pixie tops etc, and am wondering if I should just go for it now and buy neutral ones or wait til it is here. I looked in one of their shops at the weekend (made DH and MIL take a trip into tunbridge wells) and the stuff they have was really lovely. They have a great zip up top too which I am thinking of getting for me as a sort of coat, ready for those cold playground duties.
Good luck for scans this week tutti frutti and current bun and anyone else.
We taped the live bith thing.. so I have that to look forward to
Oh yeah I don't know if anyone saw my post in the TV section but I was on 'something special' on Cbeebies yesterday.. Did anyone see me?? I'm on again next sunday.

suzi2 · 09/10/2006 19:31

hi divvy waves. I was wondering if you would be joining us? How's the EN? Mine vanished a few weeks ago

cadbury · 09/10/2006 19:44

Hello everyone. Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've barely had the energy or time to type to be honest!

I had my 22 week scan last Wednesday - all went well. Baby seems to be growing and developing nicely. We chose not to ask about the sex but knowing my children, it probably would have been too stubborn to let us see anyway!

I'm getting lots of movement - it's a real wriggler. And I'm feeling bigger all the time.

Sleeping has been a problem lately. Getting comfortable is a job in itself but then I'm waking up in the middle of the night and having anxiety attacks and am not able to get back to sleep. Been feeling generally very stressed really.

I had to go to the triage clinic in the delivery suite today. I've started getting very itchy, especially on my breasts but all over too. My friend is a midwife there so called me in. I have had blood taken for them to check obstetric choliosis (sp?) but I'm fairly sure it isn't that - bit early for it I think. Will get results on Friday. In the meantime, I can take piriton and this cream with menthol in it for the itching. Hope it helps.

Think BH started today - too much running to get back from the hospital in time for the school run. I had forgotten how uncomfortable they can be. Ho hum.

23 weeks tomorrow . . .

Divvy · 09/10/2006 20:33

Hi Suzi!!!! fancy seeing you here!

EN still on flare up....it started going then a fresh one turned next to it...on the other leg a brand new one on the front turned up at the same time

suzi2 · 09/10/2006 20:50

Bummer divvy. I'm really surprised that I haven't had any in a few weeks. I was getting new ones every few days until that. I have had a HUGE eczema flare up in the same areas that I'm wearing dressings everyday on and getting them treated at the hospital. They're not sure if it's related to the EN, but probably more that they're both hormonal. So still no skirts or swimming for me...

Hope they're not causing you too much pain.

Divvy · 09/10/2006 22:29

They are causing pain at the moment as they are still new....and need to get to the bruised over stage to feel better, as you know only too well

But....they are not the end of the world and you can live with them

qsack · 09/10/2006 23:52

what's EN?

Divvy · 10/10/2006 09:35

erythema nodosum

I have had it for 17 years now, but this flare up is hormonal caused by pregnancy.

Divvy · 10/10/2006 09:36

EN

Plumpbump · 10/10/2006 10:26

Hey Divvy - EN sounds miserable. Is it worse with pg?

Hope everyone is as well as possible? Currantbun, how's the scan?

My fluttery movements in the bump have gone now and been replaced with harder feelings, ones which I can feel from the outside - mini kicks, I suppose. Anyone's bump doing similar?

Got two summons from the hospital's ante-natal clinic which means I have to go and see my favourite "plump-calling" midwives/nurses again.... . Seems I going to need two injections of Anti-D, oh joy. Still, that's much less concerning than you poor ladies with SPD and ED.

suzi2 · 10/10/2006 10:58

Plumpbump... I'm one of the freaks that only gets EN when pregnant. Apparently it's an unusual reaction to the hormones. Sort of like being allergic to pregnancy. Mind you, I might get it outside of pregnancy now I've had it this time and last.

Kicks wise, this wee girl is a high kicker. i'm getting thumps in my kidneys and stomach already. DS only ever kicked around my bellybutton so these feelings are rather new!

Divvy - try not to bash them off things ... I hope your bout is over soon too. I reckon in both pregnancies it was about 8 wks for me in total. But I think you've been longer than that now

Divvy · 10/10/2006 11:59

They came up 2 days before I got my positive result....so I am 21 weeks now..anyway..like I say..there are worse things to have

I am only getting movements really low down still, they are getting stronger every day though, which is nice

Got my scan on Friday and I am starting to panic, as my womb hasnt reached my belly button yet, and as I am a big girl, thought it may be quite alot higher by now..i have measured it to the top, from my pubic bone, but its only measuring 16cm..it should be 21cm ish now.

Where is everyone elses at now?

21+1

Lucyb9384 · 10/10/2006 12:08

ok guys i need some advice - i've been getting achy pain in my pelvis (like when you've been bike riding) and it hurts to walk, turning over in bed is agony, when i sit on the sofa i can feel it and the tops of my legs throbbing and i get sharp pains in my buttocks. I googled my symptoms and it came back with SPD - what do u think? I also spoke to my midwife and she said its normal to have some pain at this stage as everything is stretching - now i don't know if i'm just being a wuss and the pain is normal or if it is something more serious - i don't remember any of this with DD1. any ideas? and sorry to go on.

Divvy · 10/10/2006 12:17

It does sound like it, and as you have spoken to your midwife and she wasnt concerned about..then keep an eye on it for now...but at any time you are worried or your pain gets worse...dont think twice about going and getting seen by someone xx

Saying that..you are still worried, else you wouldnt have asked.....go and get checked out..to put your mind at rest

CurrantBun · 10/10/2006 12:33

Divvy, doesn't sound like 'normal' stretching pains to me - these feel more like something between cramp and a stitch (at least, that's how I'd describe them). Mine have only occurred abdominally too - certainly not in my legs/hips. If you're concerned (which you obviously are) I'd get it checked out.

I'm feeling the baby move a lot too. The movements are definitely stronger than they were and I can feel them from the outside now too. Am 20+1. DH put his head against my belly the other night to see if he could hear anything in there and got 'kicked' in the face!!

Scan is in 1.5 hours - keeping everything crossed!

OP posts:
babydriver · 10/10/2006 12:48

lucyb, sounds like it could be SPD, or the start of it. I've been trying to decide whether I've got it too or not - won't bother you with details here, but it has prompted me to look at the various threads and sites about it. One thing that does seem to come across from what I've seen is that it is not something to ignore, or something to try and push through because it will get worse if you do.

Low level, intermittent aches and pains are normal but strong persistent pain is not and you shouldn't just put up with it if that's what you're facing, no matter what the mw says.

currantbun, fingers crossed for you!

soundbites · 10/10/2006 13:03

good luck with the scans, ladies ?

xxx

ja9 · 10/10/2006 13:17

hi there

i have my scan today too. in an hour. feeling quite excited but nervous at the same time..

TuttiFrutti · 10/10/2006 14:02

Well I had my scan this morning and all seems to be normal. It made me cry to see the baby's little face, all very clear. I didn't want to know the sex but of course couldn't stop myself from looking, but it's legs were bent so you couldn't tell anyway.

It did make me think - just for a minute - about trying for a natural birth, as the fibroids which caused such problems last time weren't visible and the sonographer could only see one, high up in a place which shouldn't cause difficulties. The placenta is low-lying so I've been booked in for another scan at 35 weeks. If the placenta is still very low it might mean I have to have a cs anyway. Or do I want one whatever happens? I was so sure I did...

The baby is lying transverse, which explains the odd kicks I've felt on either side.
