We're going through these fast! Thought seen as we were filling up the last thread fast I'd attempt a new thread, not sure how to copy our due date list over though... Could someone else do that?

Yeah, I worked out maternity money on Monday. Did a spreadsheet and everything... then panicked. I've got some money saved that will do a few months, but it all depends on when I end up feeling I want to go back. Also, and I know this is totally unimportant, but because I'm a teacher and am confined to school holiday expensive holidays, I'd really like us to be able to take a couple of cheaper ones while I'm on maternity leave. Particularly to go skiing, which is the big holiday spend for us.

I expect my priorities will change massively, and boyfriend doesn't like my obsession with holidays, but before I met him I'd been around the world twice, taking three years off work to do it - it's important to me, and if it's my money paying for the holidays, he shouldn't complain.

Phoning FMC at 9.. you can imagine the night's sleep that I didn't have!

Loulou888 · 19/03/2014 07:55

Hope you are okay binky

binkybunny · 19/03/2014 07:58

Thanks. Its not too much so think it should be okay. Its still scary though!

TroubleAndFyfe · 19/03/2014 08:02

It must be scary Binky (even though it's 'normal'!) sounds like you're doing well trying to keep calm. Hope it's all stopped soon!

pebble82 · 19/03/2014 08:12

Oh no! I'd forgotten to take tax and NI into account. I'm going to be sooooo skint. I'm the main earner so it's going to be tough. I hope mine and DPs relationship doesn't suffer as he's very proud.

BingoBango85 · 19/03/2014 08:16

Isn't there a small possibility we might all be in for some sort of tax rebate anyway as they will have formed our tax code off of an anticipation of earning the same for the whole year? I'm certainly thinking smp will mean my student loan payments stop

binkybunny · 19/03/2014 08:57

Once you're over the 90% smp should be tax free as it wont reach the amount you csn earn before paying tax. I think you only pay tax if you are getting paid enhanced maternity pay and its morr than 9440 per year. I'm no expert though this is juat my amateur thinking!

ohthegoats · 19/03/2014 09:32

Harmony results are delayed by 3 days.. that's all they were calling about. Stress/no sleep for no reason. Ace.

gunwalloe · 19/03/2014 09:45

How annoying ohthegoats I don't know why they couldn't have said that on your answer phone and saved the worry.

mrsb87 · 19/03/2014 09:50

Binky I hope your spotting isn't too bad, I'm glad to see you're keeping a level head about it too. Fingers crossed for you hun x

binkybunny · 19/03/2014 10:30

How annoying ohthegoats! Agree they should have said that on the message! Spotting is getting less hope this is the last lot! Typically I dont feel too sick today just a bit queasy but have this instead. I'm going to write a book. The truth about being pregnant Smile

akachan · 19/03/2014 10:50

Hi all, I'm also trying to work the money out. Does anybody know how child benefit works when you're on maternity leave? I earn exactly £60k (DH earns nothing so we are much worse off a a household than many claiming it don't get me started!) so we are no entitled to child benefit.

But am I able to claim it while I am on maternity leave as I'll be earning well under the threshold for that year obviously? I am hoping so!

mum2kiss · 19/03/2014 11:33

Im not sure how it works akachan...on the surface it looks like you should be entitled to it whilst you are on mat leave at least.

Im working from home today...my work have provided me with a laptop and an on site parking space because of the pgp...I guess every cloud has a silver lining!

Binky the bleeding us very scary. I had it with dd until u was 17 weeks...hope yours subsides so that you can start to enjoy this time more!

akachan · 19/03/2014 11:48

Thanks mum2kiss I think so too, I'm having real trouble tracking down info about it though. It can't be that unusual a circumstance surely!

mrsb87 · 19/03/2014 12:14

Maybe try the citizens advice bureau akachan? I would imagine they would be able to advise you on qhat you're entitled to.

Loulou888 · 19/03/2014 12:15

Think you would have to complete an annual income form at the end of this tax year and they will pay you the CB next tax year for this year.

But I'm not sure it's so confusing I'm self employed and my smp is going to be a nightmare. You ought to ring the tax office and advise them that your circumstances will change and what you need to do

magichandles · 19/03/2014 12:44

Is this your first DC akachan ?

You are entitled to CB whatever your income, you just have to pay back a tax charge equivalent to up to 100% of what is claimed if you earn over the 50-60k threshold. If you don't think you are going to earn that much this tax year, then I would definitely claim. You might not earn that much next tax year either, depending on when you go back to work. Once you are in the system, then you can decide whether you want to stop receiving CB if you are going to earn above the threshold, or just keep receiving it and do SA and pay it back.

You can't claim retrospectively I think, so if you are planning on more DC any time soon I would probably keep claiming and just put the money aside, you may find with another pregnancy that you fall below the threshold for a future tax year.

Grannyapple · 19/03/2014 12:55

Re: child benefit...you are entitled to it but can opt not to be paid it, so your NI stamp or something is covered...both DH & I are eligible for it but earn over £50k so we felt the self assessment at the end of each tax year wasn't worth getting paid it, to then do the complex calculations (& risk of fines if late with submissions etc).

On this mat leave, I completed the form but opted but not to receive the payment.

Re: tax & NI & SMP... You'll probably see a but if the early weeks on pure SMP boosted as the tax rebates come through that way.

Also anyone with children already who receive childcare vouchers...company is obliged to still pay these on your behalf (SMP is a statutory benefit therefore cannot be used for Salary sacrifice items). For us this meant we could drop DS's nursery days from 3 to 2 per week, vs putting him in only 1 day per week as we didn't realise I would still have vouchers to pay for nursery. Sane for the employers pension contributions & any AVC's you may pay...company gas to also pay your element whilst on mat pay too..

gunwalloe · 19/03/2014 12:55

LouLou will you be claiming MA? I had a panic last week that I wasn't paying class 2 NI but it turned out I was so our MA is assured

Just back from the emergency dentist I need 3 fillings but the dentist wanted me to get past 12 weeks so didn't do anything last time I went and since then ive got a infection pushing on a nerve on my tooth ive never felt pain like it! So im on antibiotics now and the dentist I saw today thinks the tooth is to far gone so looks like I will loose it. Has anyone had a tooth out while pregnant? Did it hurt? :(

Loulou888 · 19/03/2014 13:04

gunwalloe yes I've been paying class 2 thank goodness! I haven't had a tooth out whilst pregnant, however I had to have root canal on one around 6 months after the birth of my dc2. There is no pain like that from a tooth! Feel for you x

Loulou888 · 19/03/2014 13:05

Is there a form we need to get gunwalloe for MA

gunwalloe · 19/03/2014 13:08

The forms are here loulou

www.gov.uk/maternity-allowance/how-to-claim

I was offered root canal to try and save the tooth but every time ive heard someone talking about it they say its excruciating and im a wimp so may just opt to loose the tooth

akachan · 19/03/2014 13:20

It is my first magic. Thanks for the info, also Granny, that makes sense.

Loulou888 · 19/03/2014 13:24

Thanks gunwalloe. If I were given the option again I would have the tooth out and not root canal. Believe me i would rather give birth :)

mum2kiss · 19/03/2014 13:40

gun I have had tooth problems since the birth of dd...there is no pain on earth like an infected tooth. I feel I am qualified to make this judgement based on the fact that I gave birth without pain relief believing only death could be worse....then I got an infected tooth!!! Let them pull it out asap!!!!
