Aww for zing and everyone else feeling miserable!

KitKatChick · 24/03/2014 10:49

I've been in tears too last night. First the tears of rage and then tears of missing DH even though he’s only going away for three days. It really doesn't take much to tip me over the edge nowadays.

Just when I was thinking I was beginning to glow hay fever decided to strike so now I wake up with puffy eyes, blotchy skin and can’t stop myself from sneezing all the time. I did have a chat with my GP but he said it’s best not to take anything. Anybody else battling with hay fever and perhaps some pregnancy friendly remedies?

Plateofcrumbs · 24/03/2014 11:52

kitkat - yes I was wondering about hayfever remedies too. It doesn't normally hit me in spring but I've had a couple of weeks of constantly feeling sneezy/sniffly/headachy which has coincided with the trees blossoming so I've been thinking it has got me early this year. A summer without being able to take antihistamines is a bit daunting!!

Becky2208 · 24/03/2014 12:10

I suffer from severe eczema, as well as hay fever and a number of other allergies - my GP has prescribed low dose antihistamines, and told me to take one at night when it's particularly bad. He said there's no evidence that low dose antihistamines cause any problems - I'm a bit wary though, so I'm only taking them when I really need them! I definitely feel your pain!

ismarah · 24/03/2014 12:38

Antihistamines are OK. Better to take them and maybe have a sleepy bean than for mum to be miserable until after birth. Take as low a dose as you can get away with and I'm told that piriton and clarityn are both OK, but I don't know about any other brands or eyedrops / nasal spray things.

And I think your GP is a douche. One thing if he's not sure about the answer, another thing to tell you something that is untrue and unhelpful.

I have severe hayfever and food allergies that can cause anaphylaxis. I've asked 4 different medical staff about taking antihistamines and those that didn't know, said so. Those that knew were the obgyn consultant and the pediatrician turned geneticist. Also midwife was fine with it. GP deferred to obgyn consultant.

Biffle · 24/03/2014 12:46

mixi82 I feel your pain. I only see my DP at the weekends and it seems to be getting harder and harder. Very often find myself in floods of tears while he is away and am definitely blaming the hormones.

KitKatChick · 24/03/2014 13:00

Thanks becky and ismarah. I've done some reading up on this and there really seems to be very little evidence that antihistamines are harmful. The main problem is that for what I guess are ethical reasons there aren't very many studies on the effect of antihistamines in pregnancy at all and that's why they're not shown as safe. Obviously if the allergic reaction is so severe your life is in danger the benefits outweigh the potential risks.

I just wish my GP was a bit more open about this and explained the facts or referred me rather than just stick with the usual "don't take anything" advice.

My eczema flared up too since I got pregnant but I can just about manage that with moisturising and strong will power not to scratch myself to death. I'll definitely book another appointment with the GP as I've now developed and almost constant eye twitch.

ZingSweetCoconut · 24/03/2014 13:05

may I suggest to up your water intakes?

if you are dehydrated histamine levels in the body might rise and make symptoms worse.

ismarah · 24/03/2014 14:07

Also, nettle tea is a natural antihistamine. I think it's allowed, but as I don't drink tea in general, I've not researched it. DH says that Morrisons Nettle and Fennel tea is nice.

KitKatChick · 24/03/2014 14:44

I'll give that a go ismarah and zing. I'm normally pretty bad at keeping up my water intake and have been making a really conscious effort to drink a lot more since getting pregnant. I normally like herbal teas so nettle shouldn't be a problem for me, also heard the chamomile is good.

ZingSweetCoconut · 24/03/2014 14:49

chamomile can actually make hayfever worse for some people (my cousin) so stop if you think it affects you badly.

pure tap or filtered water really is the best.

mummytobejuly2014 · 24/03/2014 16:10

got another thing striked off our list today. tesco are doing tommee tippee microwave steriliser for £13.49 inc one small closer to nature bottle & a dummy & little tongs

icklekid · 24/03/2014 17:07

Arhh just want to cry went to antenatal gym as recommended by physio and in so much pain :-( need to go to rainbows now though so will just sit for an hour and smile at the parents!

Rubbish to hear about peoples dh going away even when not pregnant I can get upset for no reason- if he did it now I would be a wreck! Dh birthday today so need to cook him a nice meal and try to stay awake!

Really hoping hayfever stays away as could do without that on top of everything!

AuntieMaggie · 24/03/2014 17:32

My GP said if I get hayfever to take antihistimines esp if affecting my asthma - might be worth checking with pharmacists about what you can take.

Local honey is supposed to help, as is vaseline inside nostrils, not drying washing outside, sun glasses... and other things I can't remember!

coco808 · 24/03/2014 20:02

i too am suffering from hay fever Sad
the hayfever eyedrops are really helping me as I find itchy eyes the worse!
virtual hug for everyone who needs it
plate hope you are happy a great time Smile v jealous

my SPD is no better. ismarah hope you are not getting it.

coco808 · 24/03/2014 20:05

incapnika hope your pain is better??
zing I hope all is well now and DH has returned.
sorry to hear about the pain ickle I can totally empathize

HomeIsWhereTheGinIs · 24/03/2014 20:32

Ismarah, just a quick note on nettles. NHS advises against them for consumption by pregnant women (and I'd assume this includes in tea). Report here for reference www.mhra.gov.uk/home/groups/es-herbal/documents/websiteresources/con009293.pdf

Incapinka · 24/03/2014 21:21

Thanks Coco. Still pretty sore today so off to see my lovely Mctimoney chiro tomorrow and hoping she can weave her magic as rib hurting and pelvis feeling very odd. Hardly slept last night due to pain and been a long , long day with toddler so looking forward to bed in a minute. How's you? Sorry for those with DHs away and hope those suffering from hay fever find something that helps.

Incapinka · 24/03/2014 21:21

Have you seen anyone coco?

ellentullo · 24/03/2014 21:42

Played the hunger vs heartburn game last night and lost big time. Dh cooked a lovely looking lasagne - very much enjoyed it on the way down, not so much on the way up again at midnight. Doing hunger instead this evening. Oh well - hasn't stopped the boy being very busy in my belly.

ismarah · 25/03/2014 00:48

Have just remembered that the most weight gain is supposed to happen in the third trimester. Eek.

ismarah · 25/03/2014 00:57

Gin Nettle leaf tea is fine according to the sources I found. Nettle root is not. Although as I said, I don't drink tea and therefore hadn't looked nettle tea up specifically. My recommendation of it was on the basis that it is a natural antihistamine and that my DH drinks it. He has a dr confirmed histamine intolerance which has been a right bugger to get under control. I am as sceptical and pro-science as you can get without an M.D. after your name. No mossy-ness for me please, just the tiara whilst giving birth.

ZingSweetCoconut · 25/03/2014 01:43

I was just thinking about the tiara tonight ismarah!

I really should buy one soon.
I think I'll do it after 4D scan.
not from Boodles though!
(anyone seen million pound necklace? Shock )

icklekid · 25/03/2014 05:49

ellen I've played and lost that game too many times. I now only eat cereal in eves as even if/when am sick isn't too bad Sad
Been reading the batch cooking thread and made me so jealous, just want to eat in the evening!

Someone remind me what pain free sleeping is like please? I Can't remember!

Another day closer to the weekend...when is acceptable to countdown days left at work? (47 to go...!)

Howly · 25/03/2014 06:22

mixi82 I'm exactly the same as you, only see DH as weekends and Sundays is always depressing, I cry every single time!! So yes it's normal!
