Good news on the scan Bug

Just got back from mine. It was so nice to see baby swimming around Grin. Edd from the scan is 3rd September, so I was only a day out!

Good Luck tomorrow TopMammy. With regards to the bladder, I drank a pint and half before the scan, was desperate for the toilet, and turned out I had too much water and the sonographer sent me out to use the toilet before being able to take the measurements. So I wouldnt worry too much about holding on to you FMU!

broodylicious · 18/02/2014 18:28

topmammy good luck for tomorrow, sooo exciting! Pls make sure you post soon after to let us know how you got on Smile Mine is at 840 next Thursday and I too am pleased its that early on (although city traffic will annoy me on the way!) From memory, I drank about half a small bottle of water and kept wittering on to dh in the waiting room that it's prob not enough but as it turned out, it was plenty and we got lovely clear pics of little lady. Same for 20 weeks too.

Has anyone else that is due early September thought about the youngest/oldest thing in the school year. I'm due by my dates on the 13thish, but had my last section at 38weeks, as I'm going to have a section this time too, if it's done around the same time, I might just sneak into August and therefore have a bubba who will be youngest in the school year, or if it's done a bit later it will be the oldest.
As my own bday is end of Aug and I was always a young one, it doesn't really bother me, but wondering if anyone else had thought about it?
In other news, I have none, still feeling exhausted both dc are unwell, and I have no clothes to wear, can't bring myself to move to mat clothes until after scan a week Friday, but that can't come soon enough, I need to wear something else than my pj's in the house and leggings outside!
Good news on the 12 week scans so far, I guess they will start coming thick and fast now.

IAteSomeofthePies · 18/02/2014 19:06

Hooray for all the happy scan news!

Good luck for tomorrow, Topmammy and Marie. Deep breaths. I reckon my bladder refills roughly every 10 minutes at the moment. I drank the recommended 2 pints an hour before and was in agony every time the sonographer pushed down. And then she couldn't get the baby to turn because my bladder was too full.

Welcome, Englishgirl. Did you really just find out? Wow- you missed pretty much the whole first trimester of worry!

I was due 1st Sept., and now 29th August, so I've definitely thought about the youngest/ oldest in school thing, Boo. Obviously I'll be so elated just to have a healthy kid whenever it arrives. But if I'm offered a section/ induction date of 31st August and the doctor/midwife is happy then I'm going to check if they're free the next day, too! If not, we'll save on a year of child care costs.

Inbl00m · 18/02/2014 19:49

Hi everyone, do you mind if I join?

EDD 20th September. Eek! Smile

bugoven · 18/02/2014 20:03

Aw that's brilliant Cumbrian.

I emptied my bladder an hour before my scan and that was fine, we got a few brilliant pics and all thw measurements were takwn without any problems X

isitme1 · 18/02/2014 20:21

Just checking in.
both kids havr been ill and I keep getting bloody headaches.

Bp is fine just a bit of protein in wee.
I think headache is lack of sleep and water.

topmammy · 18/02/2014 20:21

That all sounds promising about the bladder thing. Looks like I won't have to do the wee dance in the waiting room after all!

Just had an orange ice lolly, so nice and refreshing!

babyspice2501 · 19/02/2014 07:33

Hi girls, I was on the August thread but had my 12 week scan on Monday and my due date is actually 2nd sept so can I join you lot please? And can someone add me to the stat list?

Babyspice 30 dc3 due sept 2nd have I done it right? Thanks to anyone that adds me.

Hope your all ok and enjoying half term!

OneInAMinion · 19/02/2014 07:34

Yay to all the scans...exciting stuff! I finally had my first MW app yesterday, but they hadn't booked me in for enough time, so she just gave me some stuff to read and made me another one. I'm a bit frustrated that it will have taken nearly 4-5 weeks and 2 pointless appointments since finding out I was pregnant to get there and I'll be 10 weeks at that appointment, but hey, what can you do. So I still can't get a scan date & join you all until that's sorted Hmm

rockin20s · 19/02/2014 08:00

Good luck on the scans today!!!

OneInAMinion · 19/02/2014 08:25

Can I pick your brains please ladies?

  1. I get the difference between FMU, AMU & OU but how did you decide where you want to give birth? I struggled to find anywhere that objectively compares hospitals in my area (Solihull, Birmingham, etc.) and whilst there are reviews galore on various websites, for every person that gives the hospital a positive review, someone else slates it. I'm really confused as I had no idea that I'd have to decide so early in my first pregnancy. It also seems that nearly half of women having their first babies end up in OU anyway.

  2. I've been asked whether I'll have the whooping cough vaccine later in my pregnancy and again I'm interested in your views. I'm pro vaccinating children, but I'm nervous about having anything whilst pregnant, particularly when I was vaccinated against it as a kid.

Help please!

tiredallthetime123 · 19/02/2014 10:01

Morning ladies! Had my 12 week scan on Monday and all is well. I didn't like having it done, it fact, I've worked out, I have hated all my appointments so far- think it is because they make me so anxious I'm a total basket case for 3 days before! Only just calming down now- managed to get so tense I gave myself a migraine so I'm off work. Anyway, going to try and relax now we've made it to 12 weeks! Good luck everyone else!!! Xxxxxxx

topmammy · 19/02/2014 10:10

Had my scan! Everything looks fine. Wriggling and back flipping about all over the place haha. I was so nervous this morning, felt like I was going to a job interview!

I was surprised that my EDD has been moved to even earlier though -26th August! I really thought it'd be moved to later. Chances are I might go overdue anyway. I hope you ladies won't mind if I stay here though Cake :)

rockin20s · 19/02/2014 10:12

tired and Top congrats!! glad everything went well!

oneinaminion sorry cant help you, im going homebirth. love your name by the way!!

CordeliaScott · 19/02/2014 10:25

oneinaminion I looked at the NHS Choices website but to be honest chose Good Hope as it was closest and figured that when I'm in labour I will want to be as close to the painkillers as possible!

tiredallthetime123 and topmammy glad to hear everything went well at your scans.

Missingcaffeine · 19/02/2014 10:36

Excellent news on your 12 week scans topm and tired. I can't wait for mine, but I think it's going to be another 3-4 weeks away. Still haven't met the midwife and I'm 8+4 - I'm going to chase that appt today.

Oneina I struggled to choose as well as had the choice of 3 hospitals. I searched online but all I could find was stats re number of c-sections, normal deliveries etc, but ultimately that doesn't tell you about the quality of the care. I put a post on local mums net and a few people commented which was nice to hear, but essentially I just took a lucky guess. I don't think there was much difference between the 3 and I went with the one my GP said she would choose.

Today the nausea is almost gone and I fancy food and have energy for the first time in almost 3 weeks!! Soooo happy!!! Yesterday was not too bad either apart from a headache which I think was from tiredness.

Lottystar · 19/02/2014 11:58

Ladies, good stuff to all those having scans and seeing their little wriggling bubbas! Exciting stuff. I've been rather nauseous last two days not helped by my oldest ds (nearly 3) having a vomiting bug. Clearing up puke when your early pregnant is not good! Just hoping my younger tot doesn't get it now.

How long did it take after your booking in appts with the midwife to get your 12 week scan letter? I had my booking in appt at Monday (I'm 9 weeks) and just wondered how long the process takes. My husband is military and it can be a bugger for him to get time off without lots of advance notice and I definitely want him there.

IAteSomeofthePies · 19/02/2014 12:19

Again, yay for good scans!

Lotty the MW booked my 12 week scan at the booking in appt, then I got a letter through the post two days later.

Minion only one choice of hospital in my area, so I've no idea how I'd choose. An acquaintance's newborn caught whooping cough in the outbreak two years or so ago in California, with a very sad outcome. The little one was too small to vaccinate yet. My MW said that if I have the vaccine it will confer better immunity for that period for the baby.

I had my first consultant appt yesterday (for thyroid issue). I was late out the door and the post was early, so I grabbed the brown envelope and opened it at work, only to find it was an appt for the same day! Posted the day before, too, so it wasn't the Royal Mail's fault. So I didn't have my notes with me and got a lecture from the consultant. I'd anticipated carrying them all the time the end of the pregnancy, or on road trips, but not to work every day at 12 weeks! Grrr. Maybe they should send out appt letters sooner than the day before. Hmm

OneInAMinion · 19/02/2014 12:51

Thanks all. I have the choice of 3 hospitals in my trust (Solihull, Heartlands & Good Hope) plus QE and Birmingham Women's in my area and some are FMU, some are both AMU and OU and some OU only so there's too much choice!!

I liked the idea of a home birth until the Birthing Place research said it typically results in better outcomes for second time mom's but not first timers. How are you supposed to make an educating decision with no useful info?!

Fairypants · 19/02/2014 13:16

Minion- Where there are no known issues, the decision is usually down to personal preference (are you more concerned about being as natural as possible or likely to worry if not on site in case of emergencies) and geography.
You can always change your mind (or circumstances will change it for you) so most people go with a gut feeling. I'm within 1/2 an hour of 2 hospitals (both with consultant led and midwife led units) and a new cottage hospital with midwife led unit (apparently partners can even stay overnight!) so there is a bit of a decision to be made.
Should there be a medical problem and you/baby need to be somewhere else because of facilities or expertise, they will transfer you to get the care you need but if you are likely to worry, you might be happier to be in the right place to start with.
As I'm on dc 3 and had straightforward births with the others, I'm going for home. I still have to be booked to a hospital so have gone for my local as its 5 minute drive away and if I couldn't have a home birth, I wouldn't be going to a birth centre.

OneInAMinion · 19/02/2014 13:53

Thanks fairy, so it's not written in stone then? All of the hospitals are within a half hour drive and some less, so it feels like it would have to be fairly exceptional circumstances to not get to a hospital in time if needed. I like the idea of more 1-2-1 care and more natural but as I've never had a baby before who knows if I can hack the pain...I expect it's much worse than my tattoos were! Grin

It just felt like a massive decision to make in our first conversation, but I feel much better about being able to change it later on.

rockin20s · 19/02/2014 14:33

havent gotten much sleep over the last few days weeks but today seems to be the worst, i actually sorted crying before lunch as i was so tired, had to leave and go buy food (eat way to much) feeling better now but still very tired.
of course my boss would choose today/tomorrow to visit out satellite office so i cant just go home!

Fairypants · 19/02/2014 15:04

Minion- at my surgery they ask when they make the books appt (so I was 4 weeks!). It is a bit ridiculous. Where I am they use the booking hospital for scans and if you need to see a consultant or physio and I see community midwives for check-ups but many people move or change their mind about what they want so you can change - I think it's probably a bit of a paperwork exercise. For dd1 I wanted as natural as possible, only gas and air etc but didn't know what to expect to went to hospital ( before the days of midwife led units). Personally, I think the midwife led units attached to big hospitals are great for that sort of thing as you have access to whatever level of care you actually need without feeling overly medicalised to start with.
Sorry you're so tired rockin. I've been really struggling to cope with the tiredness recently and have taken a sick day today cos I feel really fluey. It's probably just being run down but I couldn't fight it any more today.

broodylicious · 19/02/2014 16:41

minion I remember thinking the same when I was pregnant with dd - it does seem early to make a decision but it makes you think about the kind of birth you'd prefer. I wanted a natural birth, no drugs (which is what I had in the end) but our mw led unit is 45 mins away from our home and 40 mins from either of the other hospitals in the city. As you'll have probably noted, I'm a real worrier so for me - and also DH's peace of mind - it was the better option to go with the nearest hospital, five mins down the road, with the knowledge that if I needed emergency section or surgery afterwards, I wouldn't have the possibility of having to be blue-lighted 40minutes away. If the mw led unit had been attached to te hospital, it'd have been a no brainer though.

Re whooping cough, I'll definitely be having the jab. I saw the statistics of babies who were unlucky enough to catch it and it's a simple choice for me to make. I know they'll be immunised against it at three months but they're so fragile in those first three months that it'd be horrid for them to be so poorly.
