Hi all thought i'd add myself and ask a question.
Have you all decided whether you are having the vitamin k injection or oral administration for LO? Just wanted to know your opinions.

Hello I linked to an information article further down about vitamin k but here it is again for ease! I'll be getting LO to have the injection - I think it's more effective and they don't remember the pain - it's less than the compulsory heel prick test for jaundice anyway.

Marls - glad your migraine went away, scary article about BP, my mum had pre-eclampsia followed by a pulmonary embolism, amazing she had any more kids really.

Really sorry if tmi but has anyone else's wee had a pinkish tinge along with the bad smell?

Been bouncing on my ball and felt more pressure down below too- maybe something will get moving- we hope!!! Had a few stabbing bottie pains too- yeah!!! the only time i'm actually looking forward to labour.

liquidclocks · 25/08/2006 20:01

I need to get one of these balls - cheap places to go anyone?

Myrtle1 · 25/08/2006 21:07

Hello,

Last day at work today and had lovely send off with tea and carrot cake, muffins and jelly babies. Got given some cute sleepsuits and cuddly toys for LO and some pampering scrubs and lotions for me.

Liquidclocks - got my gym ball from Argos - 4.99 I think. I was borrowing MIL's reebok one before but my cat stuck a claw in it

Angeliz - Elliot is gorgeous!
I hope everyone is feeling ok and hello to the new people.

Gizmo · 25/08/2006 21:23

Hello y'all, just checking in on my return from the Land that Broadband Forgot (AKA my parent's place in North Yorkshire).

Liquid - the classic place to get a ball is Argos (less than a fiver, apparently) although I think they are exercise balls, which if punctured will deflate quickly, unlike birthing balls. Alternatively there always seem to be balls available on Ebay. Right now I'm bouncing on one I have borrowed from a friend and it is a godsend - sofa is not very comfortable at the moment and slumping over a bean bag is all very well until I want to watch TV, when I get a crick in my neck.

Like everyone else I'm knackered, but aches and pains respond well to rest so far, so it could be a lot worse: no migraines thank God. Sorry to hear about your BP/migraine, Marls, but it's nice to know your DH is sympathetic. Funnily enough, I was trying to describe late pregnancy to a mate and fellow runner the other day and the only point of reference I could come to was the second day of recovery after a marathon, when your body feels as if it has been run over by a truck and you have no energy reserves left at all.

Very exciting to hear from people who've popped already: reminds me what the point is. Goddammit, but I'm looking forward to getting rid of this bump: I finally weighed myself last week and am now at just over 12 stone, where my knees and feet are definitely only rated for my normal 10.5 stone. Consequently, I'm getting quite a lot of knee pain which is bothering me a bit, as, in theory, I'm meant to be getting my running shoes back on in the autumn to start training for next years London Marathon. Cue hollow, hysterical laughter.....

Anyway, do I win the prize for only just squeezing into the September ante-natal club? Do I? Do I?

I think you might get that prize Gizmo! You're the only one I might beat if we stick to our due dates!

Speaking of weight gain I've actually just dared to weigh myself. I weighed 9 st 7 lb at the beginning of pg, lost 4 lb though morning sickness and a bug DS kindly brought home, and now weigh 10 st 6 lbs, so at 35 wks that's an overall gain of just less than a stone - do people think this is ok or should I have put more on? I'm 5'3".

1Baby1Bump · 25/08/2006 22:04

liquid- i got my ball from argos for about 4 quid i think. it is an exercise ball but did the trick, although i felt a total plonker sat on it!

also i didnt know a jaundice heel prick was compulsory? when are they supposed to do that? that has made me mad. i guess everyone knows why that makes me mad so i wont explain.

with regards vit k, this one will have it too via injection.
liquidclocks · 25/08/2006 22:47

They wouldn't let me take DS home without the heel prick - turnedout he did have jaundice though. I don't know why it would make you madder than anything else they do - threads I should look up or am I just being dense?

Thanks for the info on balls (and cori I meant the excercise balls )

1Baby1Bump · 25/08/2006 22:54

it maddens me as ds was so badly jaundiced he ended up being given a bottle of formula by hospital, my milk dried up, he spent first 2 weeks in hosp on transfusion list and was lucky to escape brain damage they said.

if they had tested him he could have been sorted earlier rather than going home and the jaundice level getting dangerously high.

when he was to dopey to feed they said he must have had a really traumatic birth!
what in the pool?! yeah right!

sorry if it sounds ranty, its not meant to be, just trying to cut it down a bit!

pol26 · 25/08/2006 23:07

My DD had jaundice and we were still sent home but advised to feed her often, I was feeding every three hours though and that way she slept four home in the night and slept through from 7 weeks as she had taken on enough in the day. Her jaundice actually seemed worse tho as mw came round and she was sat in the 'jenny giraffe' m&p chair which was orange which gve her more of a 'glow' mw was panic striken and so I lifted her fronm the chair and then she puffed out- she wasn't so orange...

liquidclocks · 25/08/2006 23:10

That sounds like it must have been a nightmare for you. DS was also too sleepy to feed - part of the reason I cracked and switched to FF - no-one told me there was a possibility he was jaundiced and not latching on because of that - I was given the whole 'traumatic' birth cr*p too. He'd drunk a total of maybe 4oz of milk since he was born at the end of day 3. I should be grateful then that the consultant insisted othe test as 'standard procedure'. DS did end up back iin hospital 2 weeks later resulting from a combination of reflux and sleepiness due to the jaundice but thankfully he picked up really quickly once we switched to special reflux milk. So glad your baby was ok 1b1b.

1Baby1Bump · 25/08/2006 23:12

i bought a pack of brightly coloured sleep suits for ds before he was born. they were all plain primary colours. blue, green, yellow and orange.
i put the yellow one on him as all the others were dirty and was told off by nurse for not giving him a chance!! lol

1Baby1Bump · 25/08/2006 23:16

oh liquid u wouldnt believe how awful i felt.
awful coz he was too tired to latch on, awful coz i let the nurses handle him so badly when trying to latch the poor little blighter, awful coz in my desperation to keep another canula out of his little arm agreeing to the formula....
it goes on and on.
i had not slept since giving birth for a week and fell asleep standing up with my head against one of his lamps. i thought i had gone to hell, not just had a lovely baby.
i know others have had much worse, but when its your baby its the worst thing to you.

im adamant this one will be tested in the delivery room!

pol26 · 25/08/2006 23:21

I can totally empathise with some of the mw and nurses re bf and jaundice. Some are great, some make you feel you should struggle on, some make you feel guilty you aren't nourishing them etc... I had a gew wonderful mw though when I stopped bf.

And this time going to bf even if I have to formula feed first until my milk comes in. One older mw last time with DD said they always did that in her day and never had confusion as long as when you switched it was to bf solidly.

liquidclocks · 25/08/2006 23:26

1b1b - the one thing I know that's true is that you can never compare your situation to theirs, when your baby's ill its the worst experience ever, and to go through it when they're so tiny and new and your body has just been through trauma too - well, it's not easy at all. I remember when DS went all floppy and wouldn't wake up I was so scared - he wasn't half as ill as some of the other babies on the ward but it ranks high among my worst experiences ever.

1Baby1Bump · 25/08/2006 23:50

its nice to know someone else bf'ing was trashed by jaundice. not nice but ykwim.
jaundice is such a simple thing but can be so dangerous too.
i must go up to bed now, im achey.
see u ladies tomorrow and thanks for all the chat!!
x

Marls001 · 26/08/2006 00:03

So sorry to hear about all the jaundice - I imagine that'd be the absolute worst thing to have to go through ... to get so far as to give birth (as much trauma as that is by itself) ... and then to go through even more with the baby. it was hard enough for me to bring DS1 post-birth into the lab - they seemed to go so long and take so much (from his heel) while he was screaming. (I think that was the [US's] 2 month pediatrician appointment, but remember it like yesterday.)

Liquid - wow! at your Mom's experience - she definitely sounds like a strong and capable person to have continued on and had more .

Thanks for good wishes re migraines. I'm to take my bp every day & report #s at Dr. appt. Monday. Hopefully that chapter is closed [fingers crossed icon].

Gizmo - Definitely a comparison to which DH would relate. You know, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do that training. And think of the bragging rights!

(As for me, running since age 11 but no marathon desire ... like my love of chocolate but not 2 lbs in one sitting! ... I'd still like to try bungee jumping, though.)

TopBanana - CONGRATS on joining the driving club!

Pol - After it's a birthing ball, could become an exercise ball ... As far as I know, they're the same thing here in the States? What I've bought is actually an exercise ball ... the hospital has some, so will start off at home with ours, then use theirs there. Just sitting, rolling around on it with my head & arms leaning on the bed really helped last time I labored.

ezridax · 26/08/2006 11:27

LC - Thanks for the info re vit K . I'm thinking i will go for injection. still not 100% tho.
Not nice hearing about the jaundice stories, gutted for all of you. Although i would like to say that it may help us 1st time mums spot the signs so thanks.

pol26 · 26/08/2006 14:15

What I brought was a pilates ball -same as an excercise/birthing ball. I figure once the baby is here i'll either give it away or continue to let DD 'boing' around on it... I know I will not be bouncing on it

Went to lakeside shopping today but brought nothing but lunch out and a two pack of bibs... /one saying 'My Grandpa remembers the dinosaurs' Which I thought was quiet funny.

Feeling tired as no sleep last night and know i'm going to end up snoozing on the sofa while DD is having her nap. Making the most of it!!!

Is everyone ok?!

mandaz · 26/08/2006 15:00

Hi all and welcome to the new peoples

I still feeling pretty run down, my head and neck hurt quite a lot and I keep getting headaches. Mw visiting Monday so I guess we'll see what the old bp is doing then. I'm really glad I'm not in hospital though.

Liquid - I have been a bit worried about being induced. My Mum had really bad experienced both times she was induced so I'm hoping to avoid it. My mw told me that they won't induce on high bp alone so as long as everything else stays clear, I should be ok.

Angeliz - your baby is absolutely adorable!

Eridax - I'm opting for the Vitamin K injection

Marls - hope the migraine has improved.

Just to add to what people have been saying about the gym balls from Argos, someone on here recommended them for v-shaped pillows. I got 2 at £5.99 each and they are brilliant. They came with covers too and I would highly recommend them.

I decided after I nearly had to stay in hospital to re-think my hospital bag! My extremely full suitcase on wheels seemed a tad OTT for what will hopefully only be a 1 night stay when it happens, so having unpacked the kitchen sink , I now have an 'emergency' over-night bag and another which has all the maternity pads and clothes in which my Mum will bring in on the day. I have a seperate bag for baby which is also bursting at the seams but I think I'll leave that one as it is.

clairemow · 26/08/2006 18:32

Took ages to read everything!! Thanks for adding me to the list liquid.

TopB - good news on the show, it could still be a while after that so don't panic yet!! I'm dying for mine to come out now.. 39 weeks on Tuesday, figure that's enough...

Marls, glad the migraine went and hope the bp is ok at the doctor's on Monday.

Pol, again at your midwifery service - it sounds truly appalling! Can you telephone the delivery suite direct and get someone there to check you out? that's what my notes say to do.

We've had friends here since Wednesday with their 3 and 1 year olds, so totally exhausted now after 4 days of cooking, entertaining etc. - although we know them really well and no great strain to entertain! Looking forward to a very very early night, and hoping for not too many toilet trips...

Oh yes, the baby will be getting the vitamin K injection at birth. I didn't realise the heel prick was for jaundice though? DS had it at home after we'd left hospital last time. We had problems at first with him being sleepy too (but not because of jaundice though) - he lost loads of weight, got really skinny and we nearly had to go back in to hospital. So I spent 2 days in bed with him attached permanently and thankfully he started to put on weight (hasn't stopped since...). My biggest tip for first timers and this sleepy problem is to try and wake the baby to feed at least every 3 hours if they aren't waking themselves. We were letting DS sleep for 5/6 hours at a time in the day, and he just wasn't getting enough. Don't be afraid to try anything to keep them awake - we used to hold DS, naked in front of a fan to wake him to feed!

Ok, long enough post now. Enjoy the rest of the bank holiday all those in the UK!

1Baby1Bump · 26/08/2006 18:49

evening ladies!

i am off out tonight with dh for a couple of bevvies in town! well, coke for me but it is nice to get out and do young things when youre 23 although i cant move very quick!
my mummy is coming to look after ds and put him to bed- that alone is bliss. sometimes hes a nightmare to get down for the night if he is overtired.
will have to go choose a tent to wear but dont know which one......?

didnt realise the jaundice stories would benefit anyone who hasnt been there but of course they will! im so thick just lately. you will have an idea how it starts and can get your baby tested if necessary before it escalates and gets nasty.

dh is sure to get bladdered but he is also worried in case the baby comes. even tho im not due yet i keep getting suspicious pains that stop and start.
i told him if i do and youre ratted you will not be accompanying me to delivery suite!!

hope everyone is ok as it seems most are having probs with one thing or another.

liquidclocks · 26/08/2006 19:06

Narrow escape today - nearly got myself into a mumsnet BF v FF argument but took myself of for a walk in the nick of time! Love MN but sometimes some folks can get a bit personal. I love my happy home here on the ante natal thread!

Mandaz - please don't let me worry you about induction, when they do it as long as you make sure it's for a good reason then you can be confident it's best for you and baby. I just think it helps to be aware that it'll probably be more difficult and painful so you go in with an open mind regarding pain relief/intervention. I wish someone had told me. Hope your head feels better soon but if it ets worse you need to go get your BP checked right away.

Clairemow - enjoy your relax then, you're going have LO so soon, make the most of it now!

1b1b - know what you mean, sometimes feel too old and need a good night out to remind me what a bright young thing I am! My mates have suggested going out for pizza in a few weeks so definitely going in the hope it will lead to a longer evening...!

DS needs his milk - back later... hope all's well with everyone!

pol26 · 26/08/2006 19:48

Claire- you reminded me of DD, I used to be cruel and strip her off to wake her up for a feed after three hours in the day- that way she slept better at night and will def be doing the same again. All mw's were v.happy with that too as for my sanity as much as her care but last time I had a wonderful team of mw's and was alot more poorly with bp and reduced movements, etc...

Liquid- sometimes I find mumsnet can be a little fierce in terms of ppl's opinions! Especially on the bf and ff debate

On the mw front still haven't had my call returned and have given up!!! Felt teary about it yesterday now just plainb old furious- god help the surgery on Tuesday morning! If they can't tell me who my mw is who bl*y can??? Also feel that if I call the labour ward i'm a fraud as i'm not in labour but DAU aren't ever answering and mw never replies to messages.
