another one here with lots of hiccups - nice to know it's a sign of a healthy baby - wouldn't get nice little snippets like that from my midwife.
Quick question - is anyone thinking of having a water birth? I am quite keen this time, but wasn't sure if you had to have a session before to learn about it. As my midwife doesn't work for the hospital I am having the baby in she is no help whatsoever (politics..politics!)

liquidclocks · 11/08/2006 09:58

Hi mabel, my friend just had a water birth and put me right off! Mind you I can't have one anyway because of the group strep b thing. I don't think you NEED to learn about them but it might be worth ringing your delivery suite and asking how many pools they have (we have 7 rooms, only one with pool) and if they have any recommendations about kit to bring. My friend wasn't planning on one and she said the water was a bit cold and when she got out the midwife didn't let her get dry/changed before putting her on the bed to deliver the placenta so she was freezing. It might be worth taking extra (old) towels and big t-shirts and asking to deliver the placenta in the pool, then when you get out you can go straight to the bath or drying off stage. My friend reckoned the worst bit was negotiating the steps with wobbly legs while all the blood (and meconium in her case) was dripping in between your legs. BUT, if it heps relieve pain then why not! - maybe you could start a thread and get some stories from other women who've done it that way, I know some people swear by it.

appyday · 11/08/2006 11:11

Marls, have gone to your yahoo group, so please will you approve me!
Last late shift today and DH has just phoned to say theres not much on for tonight, so may get home for 8.30. I can hear my bed calling already!
Got to go into town now to raid cake decorating shop for supplies to make alien birthday cake, thank goodness DD wants an alien cos it will probably come out looking like nothing on earth.
Hopes of an early birth are fading as LO is so high up it is practically forcing my ribs apart, but I'm sure someone will pop soon and raise the excitement and anticipation level. And once 1 goes...

mabel1973 · 11/08/2006 11:39

Liquid - your friends experience does not sound great. My neighbour had one and really enjoyed it, she said it was like a warm bath and did help with the pain, I am slightly worried about all the 'bits' floating in the pool - DH is quite squeamish.
Appy - lol at your alien cake!!

Gizmo · 11/08/2006 12:00

Hello everyone: Liquidclocks made me realise there must be a September antenatal thread, so I thought I'd pop in and test the waters.

I'm expecting my second DS on the 29th September, so I've just passed the 33 weeks mark. Planning a homebirth, but not being too dogmatic about the idea, in case luck doesn't go my way - more concerned about the post-natal period, if truth be told.

So are all you WOHM starting your maternity leave soon? Mine starts at the end of next week which makes me very happy on the one hand - much more time for pottering around and mumsnetting properly (rather than lurking) - but sad on the other: I will loose my lovely air-conditioned office which has been an absolute lifesaver throughout July.

Also, (and I know the answer to this is 'of course' before I even ask it) is anyone else getting pretty breathless? I've been having odd episodes of breathlessness since around 24 weeks, and it's spooking me a bit, because it doesn't feel related to the normal last trimester 'feet under bump' type breathlessness. This type largely occurs if I lie down (even on my side) or sit back too far: I'm wondering if baby is sitting on some blood vessels in there. Well, I hope it's comfortable, because feeling like you're drowning whenever you try to go to sleep is certainly not something I'd recommend...

mabel1973 · 11/08/2006 12:15

Hi Gizmo!
I have exactly the same breathlessness that you are experiencing. I am sure last time I was able to sleep on my back (even though I know they tell you not to), but this time round if I lie on my back for even a few seconds, I feel like I am having an asthma attack or something!

intergalacticwalrus · 11/08/2006 12:25

Gizmo,

I have had the breathlessness thing too. I have had it from about 14 weeks, and have had iron levels repeatedly checked (breathlessness can be a sign of anaemia) but they are normal.

It has got loads worse over the last few weeks, but I think that's on account of huge baby! I can't walk very far because of it (and the SPD) and when I caught the bus the other day, a really elderly man offered me his seat, because I has hobbling like a pensioner and rasping like an obscene phone caller!!!

It's lovely and cool here today. I am soooooo glad that the weathyer has been on the turn, because if I had to spend yet another day with my hair plastered to my head, I'd have gone beserk!

Gizmo · 11/08/2006 12:26

Yup, that's it - asthma a go-go. Makes me v sorry for anyone with real breathing problems.

It seems to me it might related to my level of relaxation, for two reasons: I've been experimenting with yoga/hypnobirthing techniques and find that some breathing exercises do help, although five minutes of me breathing wierdly right next to him probably doesn't help DH drop off! Also, strangely, when I wake up in the middle of the night I can lie on my back or side with no problem, and I guess by then my body is profoundly relaxed and the abdominal wall is allowing the baby to fall away from any blood vessels he might be crushing.

Gizmo · 11/08/2006 12:28

Urgg, IGW, SPD and huge baby - I do feel for you. I've had a few SPD twinges and boy, oh boy, I do not want the real thing.

mmiotte · 11/08/2006 12:36

Hi - I'm not finding breathlessness too much of a problem - I've just started walking really slowly so that pensioners can now race past me. What I have found (34 weeks), my hip joints get really sore when I sleep. It wakes me up 2-3 times a night and apart from going on all 4s and waving my bum in the air which helps a bit, it's really sore. I just hope it clears up post LO becuase I fee like I need a hip replacement.

intergalacticwalrus · 11/08/2006 12:41

lol at the hip replacement, I know what you mean. DP and I havent been able to have sex (sorrt if TMI!) for ages, as my hips keep popping out of place, and it's not very seductive when I yell "get off me, you fecking oaf, I'm in agony!" Still, not long now.

I got SPD (nowhere near as bad though) with DS, and IIRC, my pelvis/hips etc still hurt for a few eeks afterwards, but the pain was v baerable. It was the odd twinge here and there. Plus after the baby is born, you don;t get time to hurt!

I am quite looking forward to having this one now. DP and I aren't planning on having anymore after this one, and I am looking forward to wearing normal clothes again and not feeling like Moby Dick!

mmiotte · 11/08/2006 12:43

Sorry - realised I rather barged in there with my hip-moan. Please excuse my manners - am rather new to all this.

Quick question - are you all ready and packed for hospital with birthplans etc etc? I haven't done a thing yet and since this is my first, am not sure when I have to start organising myself and DH.

Gizmo · 11/08/2006 12:48

Oh yes, that's one of the things I am clinging onto for the postnatal period: I may be prostrate with exhaustion and PND, my DH may be slipping rapidly back into the usual depressive black hole that engulfs him whenever things get 'too much' and DS1 may be be turning into a thoroughly disturbed little boy with all the parental neglect, BUT I shall once again be able to sleep on my stomach! And not have to worry about trousers and tops failing to meet in the middle! And go for a run! (although obviously not immediately ).

It's almost going to be worth it...

mmiotte · 11/08/2006 12:54

'Walrus - have the same issue with my DH - luckily we're both so pooped in the evening (we have also been moving house), that his idea of a good night in is going to sleep at 9.30pm! (Thank God!)

Gizmo - weird as it sounds, I can't wait to be able to sleep on my stomach - so much more comfortable than strictly on the left. But have been told that the size FFF boobs do get in the way for a little while, so you'll still be restricted to lying on your side. sigh.

intergalacticwalrus · 11/08/2006 12:56

Yes, and being able to wear heeled shoes without crippling oneself!!! Hurrah!

mmiotte, I haven't packed a thing, and haven't done birth plan yet. Have an appt with mw on Tues to discuss my birth plan, but haven't got a clue of what to include, as am having CS! (might be bold an start a sep thread!) I find out Weds when the CS will be, so I am going to pack my bag after thet I think.

I am so disorganised this time round. When I was pg with DS, I had everthing sorted by now! I just can't get me arse into gear!!!!!! I did manage to buy a pack of vests for the baby the other day, which is a strt, and I have also got the double buggy now (can't be doing with buggy boards etc, DS is a very lively 20 month old, who needs to be strapped in!!!) so I have made a start. Just need to organise myself a bit better!

mmiotte · 11/08/2006 13:04

I suppose becuase this is my first, then I am quite keen to get stuff sorted. DH keeps taking the p*ss and says I'm nesting a bit early, but having read other threads, some people are popping at 38 weeks - that's only 4 weeks away (agh - what a terrifying thought). Also, perversely, it is quite fun waddling around and shopping for stuff. Plan to do a big Boots trip on the w/end for cotton wool and stuff which sadly, I'm rather looking forward to. Not sure whether to take the DH with me or not - he'll have a fit over how much I intend to spend!

Good luck re the CS - at least you'll know when you'll be due. I have a nasty feeling that I'll still be sitting around at 42 weeks. Am convinced they've got me due too early.

intergalacticwalrus · 11/08/2006 13:20

I was v keen first time too, everyone is! I just haven't had tim this time round though, as it's a whole different ball game when you have a toddler in tow!

Glad I'll know when this one's coming along, as DS was born at 42 weeks, and that 2 weeks was the longest of my bloody life! Hope you don;t have the same bother. Just keep eating curries/pineapple and have lots of sex! I keep thinking I could still go into labour soon, I am getting lots of niggly period type pains at the mo, but I got those with DS as well. Still, tis quite poss that I could be 3 weeks earky (which only leaves 2 weeks, shit!!!!)

liquidclocks · 11/08/2006 13:37

Hi Gizmo - did wonder if you should have been on our thread when I 'bumped' into you the other day!

Well, my bag is now packed, I built the cot yesterday - just have to hand in my essay on monday and sort work out so someone could take over if I go early and take my friends to the airport on tuesday (off down under for 4 months lucky things) and THEN - I'M READY!!!

DS has spent the morning getting angry with his brio set so I retreated to out of throwing range and read the newspaper - didn't realise it'd been so long since I'd sat down and done something not work or mummy related, it was lovely!

Slight moan then I'm off to watch neighbours (sad I know but my daily escape) - My hips hurt so much!!!! Thanks - I think if I told DH once more he'd break them hismself.

Woodelf · 11/08/2006 13:38

Loved the ladygarden thread - psml but personally cannot be too bothered about the trimming... - still making sure my pedicure is up to scratch tho.

Mabel - I want a waterbirth too, but birthing centre is not open till end august and I am meeting my mw next week to try to see how things are progressing. If its not open in time there's only one pool available and I'm not sure which midwives are happy to do delivery in water rather than just use it for pain relief....

Been approved for the yahoo group - will be whitecroft13 on it but can only see one message from Claire/trotsky and not access the piccies - it could be just me...

Take care ladies

mandaz · 11/08/2006 13:46

Marls - yes please on the tips! I intend to get out and about as much as I can once LO has arrived and I am going to make a concerted effort to cut down on sweet stuff etc. I did try Weight Watchers before and I did start to lose weight with it but I find it hard keep going. If I miss a meeting for any reason then it all goes to pot! I'm 30 next year so it's going to be my big year of change, both in the weight/health wise but also in getting qualified as a driving instructor and looking for accomodation. I'm hoping its going to be my turning point in life, and of course I'll have LO to spur me on!

I got my boots voucher through for the free changing bag so I'm going to get that tomorrow and pack LO's hospital kit in it. My Mum bought my pram the other day too. It's a basic Mothercare one which is just a pram which goes into a pushchair - not a travel system but I love it! It's so exciting seeing it parked up, waiting for LO to go in it! I also got the car seat and travel cot so I feel like I'm prepared just in case LO decides to come early (I can dream )

4 weeks to go on Monday! Am getting very very uncomfortable. I feel like I have a bowling ball in tummy! I keep getting like a throbbing pain in my lower back and pelvis and I am so sick of running to the loo every 10 minutes! Don't get me wrong I love being pg but I really can't wait to feel 'normal' again!

homemama · 11/08/2006 13:49

Hi ladies!
Marls, I think I've joined the yahoo group so can you approve me please!

I'm so pleased to hear what you have all said about the hiccups. One of my pregnancy books said that it can be a sign of the cord around the neck. DS had constant hiccups and he did have a nuchal cord but it was very loose and the mw said he would hardly have noticed it. This one is hiccuping too, but you lot have made me worry less. I mentioned what the book said to my mw last time and she had never heard of such a link.

I've also been having what I assume to be BH in the last few days. I never had them last time so wasn't sure what they were. They can take my breath away but are very irregular. Anyone else getting them?

Puppy, your DS sounds so cute. I will be blubbling too when DS reaches that age. When everyone sang happy birthday to him last year (his 1st) I cried my heart out. Motherhood!!!

compo · 11/08/2006 14:08

Afternoon everyone and welcome to the new people
So tired today - ds has finally learnt how to get out of his bed and woke us up at 6am (after I'd been awake since 4am....shouting 'milk' 'milk' - it's hard to be grumpy with him when he's so sweet and full of beans (I'm sure the novelty will wear off though!!)
New baby's room is all decorated now and newly carpetted. We've decided to buy a double pushchair as a buggy board isn't very practical with our pushchair. Dh is meant to be looking for a lightweight one on ebay. If anyone has any recommendations that would be great.

liquidclocks · 11/08/2006 15:20

Homemama - up from 4am ish last night with painful BH's - finally got back to sleep around 7am to be woken by DH at 7.30 - mind you, he wasn't to know!

Compo - I'm still an phil and teds fan and I've been using it 3 months now. I've heard the out n about nipper

liquidclocks · 11/08/2006 15:24

...is good too (sorry don't know why it loaded a half typed message). I'd go with one tht fits through doorways personally though. Advantage of phil and teds is you can sell it on without much loss when you've done with it.

homemama · 11/08/2006 16:31

Just had quite a distressing ante-natal appointment. MW has referred me for another scan and to see a consultant as she is sure I'm carrying too much fluid.

Feeling quite upset as I thought we were over the worst of the worries. I've started a thread in pregnancy to see if anyone has any experience.

Appointment is Tue so I'll keep you posted.
