coco808 · 05/01/2014 10:26

same here Dorothea i'm on MN when I should be working on my essay...at least the weather is terrible which is a good motivation for me to stay in my study
company tax??? oh Becky I feel your pain...
thanks for rubbing that in ismarah Grin I've also got a 30,000 word dissertation to submit by December this year

coco808 · 05/01/2014 10:28

Dorothea I asked about NT measurement, heart rate, asked to look at the brain and the heart chambers and the length of the baby. Now get back to your essay...Brew

ismarah · 05/01/2014 11:03

Coco You're very welcome x On the plus side - there's no thesis involved in making beans Grin

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 05/01/2014 13:26

I felt so awful all day yesterday, could hardly get off the sofa.

today I was up at 8am, got loads done, planned my week, had lunch!!!!, taking kids ice skating in an hour and feeling positive - there's hope yet for all of us that once the nausea and MS eases up we'll be less moaning zombie-like creatures.
Grin
mark my words - we'll all feel better soon!Wink

have a great day!

ismarah · 05/01/2014 13:57

I was really getting into the zombie / couch potato mode!

I've been doing research on birth options and now I'm all grrr. I have issues with allergies to drugs and often have a contrary reaction to them, so I worry about managing an active labour and birth without any drugs that are suitable for me. Ideally, I'd want a water birth, but the pool can't be booked in advance and if it's in use, tough. If I want a guaranteed water birth, I'm told I have to book my own pool and do it at home. Fair enough, but I suspect that for health reasons, I will not be given the choice of a home birth.

I hate what the research I've done on VBs tells me - with a very high rate of intervention of some kind and possible consequences for mother or baby. I also hate the idea of going for a VB and ending up with an EMCS because stuff happens. I've never given birth but feel no particular ideation about the process - and because it's something that scares most sane people a little bit it scares me too, in a fear of the unknown / the unpredictable kind of way. On the other hand I've had loads of surgeries. I know how I cope under those circumstances and a part of me is thinking if I'm just as likely to end up with intervention of some kind or EMCS, I may as well go for the known, controlled option of an ELCS, removing the possible panic and worry involved in all the 'what if' scenarios. I have a consultant appt anyway in Feb so I'll be mulling things over until then, I suspect, and after too.

Sorry to get all heavy on a Sunday afternoon. Although I suspect few of us are up for a full Sunday roast so at least this won't give you indigestion.

MrsA2 · 05/01/2014 14:04

Welcome Margery.

Ismarah I've started to think a bit about it all too... I really want to go for the water birth / gas and air only option because I'm nervous of the after effects of epidural/drugs but I think no real pain relief is a big ask!

Been to the gym (only 15 mins on the cross trainer) and for a swim, shattered now. Time for a cuppa...

DorotheaHomeAlone · 05/01/2014 14:16

casamama and coco thanks for the stern words but you'd be amazed at the things I've found that 'needed' doing today even while avoiding mn! Been faffing all day so still only 500w down. Useless! Please tell me you're as bad.

ZingChoirsOfAngels · 05/01/2014 14:26

Ismarah

you can certainly opt for an ELSC with the reason being "just because you want to" - no specific medical reason is required, though some hospitals/consultants might challenge you on it or plain refuse it.

as you do have medical reasons it is very likely you will not have to "fight it". best thing is to say you want an ELSC sooner than later.
And a word of advice, there's certainly no point in requesting one when fully dilated and ready to push - yes, I did this with DD!Grin Grin

coco808 · 05/01/2014 14:58

zing and ismarah i'm inclining towards asking for ELCS. Am I right in saying the new NUCE guidelines (2011) allow us to decide whether we want one or not and the doctors can't just refuse it anymore?

dorothea I've only done 148 words since morning!!! Read one case, 42 blooming A4 pages and summarised it!

coco808 · 05/01/2014 14:58

sorry I meant NICE guidelines

jaykay987 · 05/01/2014 15:02

ismarah - I could be wrong - bit if you think you'll not be allowed a hone birth you're unlikely to be allowed a waterbirth either, as these pools are typically in midwife led units which you might not be allowed access to.

I really hope Im wrong. I really fancy a waterbirth and a midwife led unit, but an under consultant care, so will only be allowed to give birth on the ward. Boo! I am terrified of hospitals and so am already dreading it.

Plateofcrumbs · 05/01/2014 15:30

We have a midwife-led unit at the hospital I'm booked in at, but not sure at the moment if I want to go that way if it closes the door to an epidural. I don't want an epidural but not sure I want to close down options.

I actually rather like hospitals (weirdo that I am) and generally find medical settings quite comforting. Never had a bad experience so that probably colours my judgement.

Plateofcrumbs · 05/01/2014 15:35

And reading backwards up the thread...hurrah for you feeling more human zing! I've been a misery over the last few days. Back to work tomorrow - hoping that it'll be better having something to take my mind off it.

MrsA2 · 05/01/2014 15:48

Plate at my hospital you can go into the midwife-led unit and then if you do want an epidural just transfer (across to the other corridor) to the labour ward instead. Are they close enough at your hospital that you can keep your options open?

ImMarmite · 05/01/2014 16:02

Butterflies in my lower stomach...I'm convinced it was our little 'prawn' having a wiggle!!!

coco808 · 05/01/2014 16:27

awwww marmite i can't wait for that moment!

talulahbelle · 05/01/2014 16:27

zing I'm very jealous. I'm very fed up of feeling slightly sick and burping loads, I have the gross metallic taste back and a watery mouth.

God knows how I'm going to cope with work tomorrow.

I'm going for an ELCS, I had a corneal ectopic last year, so it's the safest option. Hopefully no need to argue with the consultant, the midwife I saw on booking in didn't seem to think it would be a problem.

ismarah · 05/01/2014 17:06

NICE guidelines say you should be allowed an WLCS just because you want one but they are guidelines only. You may have to fight a bit for it if your particular trust is anti-ELCS, which some are. If your consultant vetos it, you should be allowed a referral for a second opinion.

I hadn't considered that if I couldn't have a home birth I also couldn't have a water birth even in hospital. I will ask at my next appt. The no home birth is not because of the drugs allergies but something else which means I suspect (don't yet know for sure) they'll want to keep an eye on me close to doctors and not just obgyn ones. But I may also just be borrowing trouble - considering the lackadaisical approach the midwife took to my medical records it might not even be an issue. I'm not trying to be coy or bigging up my health issues, which are mostly resolved as much as possible now anyway but I always feel very self-conscious when I have to list them all. I look shit on paper, basically.

If you are under midwife led care you can still have an epidural or any other drugs, depending on what you want. You can also have a plan A that may involve only gas and air but find that that just doesn't work for you and then you can change your mind at any time. It might take a bit of time to get the anaesthesiologist to you if it's particularly busy but that applies to everything in this process, it seems.

AuntieMaggie · 05/01/2014 17:20

plate I'm the same with hospitals having had several operations - the smell and stuff relaxes me.

I think from what the mw said I have little choice about where I give birth due to health conditions. I'm not sure about ELCS yet but if there's the slightest hint that this may be best for me or baby I'm not going to argue. I know somr women have a problem with it but having it in planned controlled way rather than an emergency situation is better for everyone from what I've seen. Besides I have so many stomach scars one more isn't going to matter Grin

Back to work tomorrow... really don't want to go :(

Plateofcrumbs · 05/01/2014 18:19

Thanks for the info about MLUs - I think you can still transfer over to the standard hospital facilities at my place if you want/need and epidural but I was under impression that you might be less likely to have the option if you're in the MLU (eg you'd need to have taken the decision earlier). TBH I've not spent a great deal of time looking into it yet.

Glad I'm not the only one with hospitalphilia auntmaggie!

I didn't think I was that fussed about VB vs CS but when I momentarily thought I might have to have a CS I did feel sad, which surprised me.

Casmama · 05/01/2014 18:34

I think there is a difference between midwife led care and a midwife led unit, or perhaps differences in different units.

Epidural s can only be given by anaesthetists so if the midwife led unit is not in a hospital or doesn't have an anaesthetist then you would need to transfer to hospital in the event of some problems or needing an epidural.

The majority of vbs are mainly midwife led (I think) unless issues develop.

ellentullo · 05/01/2014 18:35

The thing that terrifies me is the prospect of being induced. Basically increases risk of all the things that I wouldn't want to happen in labour - being hooked up to machines, less mobile, taking ages, more painful, and high risk of intervention anyway. I'd like to give a mlu a go if I go into labour spontaneously but am hoping I can request elective section if go post dates. Has anyone else had similar thoughts?

Casmama · 05/01/2014 18:42

There are an awful lot of scare stories about induction.
My DS was small for dates so I was induced a few days before my due date. I was given a pessary at about 5pm then went up to the ward while my dh went home. I went into labour during the night and used my tens machine for pain relief. By 7am I was fully dilated and they took me down to the labour ward- this was with a back to back baby.
As it happens I then needed a forceps delivery but this was because my DS was in a bit of distress and there wasn't time for him to turn etc not because of the induction

Your choice is your own obviously but induction doesn't need to be a disaster.

ismarah · 05/01/2014 18:56

Sorry if what I said re epidural availability was confusing for anyone - I was wrongly thinking of larger hospitals like my local one. Didn't consider we're obviously all over the UK (and Cali) and have all sorts of units around us. D'oh.

Plateofcrumbs · 05/01/2014 18:57

casmama for me it's definitely a midwife led unit (which I hear is v nice, modern, water birth facilities etc), but attached to a hospital. So the "transfer" would just be elsewhere in same building. Nice to have the choice, just not 100% sure what choice I'll make yet!
