Nearly 140 posts before I join the fray ! I knew I had a busy couple of days and you lot had the temerity to change location but wow….. This is going to be proportionally epic.
chilli congratulations!!!!! Emilio is a lovely name.
Alyssa my fingers are firmly crossed for you. It sounds like things are progressing at least and hopefully your little one will be with you very shortly if not already! Back labour is a bitch. I had nearly 15 hours of unproductive contractions in my back with DS, and then the little bugger shifted and flew out.
MrsS see above! Backache can definitele be the start of labour but my advice would be get on all fours now and encourage baby to shift into a good position.
Woohoo feather Go you with the BFing and slinging success. It sounds like you’re getting on really well
The layers sound fine if he was warm enough and you were warm enough. If you were cold then he might have been too. You can check that by just slipping a finger down the back of his clothes, but make sure you wear gloves or he’s always going to feel warm! The only thing I might suggest adding is bootees of some kind. Another option is to get a babywearing extender for your coat – there is someone who custom makes them or you’re the crafty sort. Then just follow the same rules as usual.
better et al I’m going to be with you in January. So jealous of all the little bundles arriving now but if I’m totally honest I’m not ready, even if we did have a mega cleaning session today and I added a load of cleaning products (including an old fashioned floor scrubbing brush) to the shopping list. That’s more in anticipation of MIL arriving though. I have a weekend without DS and DH to make everything spotless (and craft to my heart’s content).
snow that’s lovely that you can add another middle name for the UK. I find it hard enough with unlimited names to give the DC a taste of both cultures and a first name that will work in either. Name choosing is just so much fun!
Glad the MA has come through and you can eat. It’s always a bonus.
dusty glad you guys are doing okay. I had to laugh at the not giving up the day job. With DS my job was teaching English to student midwives, so the MWs on the ward were constantly trying out their English on me and asking for corrections! This time thankfully I teach English to art students and haven’t mentioned the midwives, although they’re slightly freaked out by my preference for medical French over the ‘words of one syllable version’. It’s because I know exactly what the medical term is and how to explain it in plain English but not necessarily the other way round!
sorelip the Close Caboo is a really easy carrier to get to grips with and for a newborn it should be fine as long as you can position them around your boobs. You may find that later on it’s not giving enough support for your lower back because it does concentrate the weight on the upper part with nothing round the waist, but hopefully by that time you’ll be able to get to a sling meet and investigate other options like a mei teir or soft structured carrier, and baby will be bigger too so there’s more choice. If you still have the Moby there are some great youtube videos, not necessarily the Moby ones but for any stretchy wrap. When using your Stokke protect both your back and baby’s hips by avoiding the outward facing position because the baby will be pulling away from you rather than falling into you IYSWIM, but you might find it good for a back carry. It’s not the most comfortable I’ve tried but it’s a safe and relatively ergonomic option and people with lower back problems and big boobs often find switching to a back carry early on is helpful.
mildred just UGH to that. Surely she could have phrased it a little more sensitively?! And of course you’re not automatically excited. There’s the whole labour and scary squally newborn phase to look forward to before you figure out the parenting malarkey.
Hope you’re feeling a bit better now Frigg. Possibly good timing that you’ve got shot of the older DC by the sound of it. Your DH’s boss sounds a prize prick. Hopefully he’ll find a better job soon!
Bohemian all pregnant women should definitely be issued with mobility scooters as standard. The waddle is just so unattractive and it makes getting anywhere in a hurry impossible even if it is technically a good sign.
clare well done for battling through. Are you doing moist wound healing with EBM compresses? I swear EBM has magical properties. The advice to change position is really good, you can also try the biological nurturting position where they’re practically upright on your tummy as you lie back and feeding while lying on your side – all of those positions mean baby is coming from a different angle and reducing the pressure on already sore bits. I agree with oneslic the judicious use of nipple shields can really help, but I’ve never heard the lansinoh as glue tip before! I’ll have to ask my BFC supervisor person whether she’s heard of it!
mum IIRC you have quite flat/inverted nips? So the butterfly shape of the Medela which still lets baby get at the aereola is probably a good bet. Those are the ones I personally recommend to absolutely everyone but they’re especially good where the tissue needs a little extra help. You can also start using the Hoffman technique to elasticate the tissue. Basically get both thumbs, put the on the pinky/red bit just below the nipple, press in and pull them gently away from each other. Nipple shields aren’t a subsitute for a good, deep latch though. Damage to the actual nipple base means the latch isn’t deep enough.
frouby it’s our last weekend just us too. I feel kind of sad about it but I don’t know what to do that’s special!
whisper bless you. I would invite you over to mine to clean but the swirly dust particles may send you into full blown hysterics. Definitely sounds like the nesting has kicked in big time. Might just be the start of something?
You’ve made me order in burgers for dinner now. We have the most amazing place that delivers. Also the kitchen light is broken and I cooked DS’s dinner by candlelight which isn’t an experience I’m dying to repeat. In other news I finally finished knitting all those bootees, and doing the bloody sewing up and stitching on ribbons/binding. They look very sweet… Now just got to pick which ones I’m going to do for DD.
