Sarah fascinating stuff around different cultures. I love love love the fact that Japanese women give up work as soon as they know they are pregnant. So wish I was Japanese right now! Smile I wish I could have pate on toasted tiger loaf, so craving it.

Bezzabelle · 06/11/2013 17:15

I think it's totally a personal choice whether people decide to eat what is advised against or drink but for me, is not worth taking any risks and I can easily go without the 'banned' foods and alcohol for a mere 9 months of my life.

Lmf679 · 06/11/2013 17:28

Hackneybird am near wanstead flats

Mitchell2 · 06/11/2013 17:38

Oooh - I am a rebel - I have been having a splash of wine in a spritzer when I have felt up to it and wanting to keep people off the scent - which I have to admit has been a grand total of three times! AND I had a small glass with dinner last night.

Not planning on having a bender but I have read up on the risks, discussed with my GP who said having a small glass on the odd occasion is fine and am happy with my choice. totally respect those who don't want to either - each to their own.

forgot about that hot cheese thing.... a piping hot Camembert with some crusty bread is on the cards for my 'fuck it, im cold, preggers and grumpy' dinner tonight.

wispaxmas · 06/11/2013 17:44

I'm all for the glass of wine every now and then, but I'll be staying away from risky foods. I don't deal well with sickness at the best of times. A glass of wine isn't going to give me food poisoning!

MarlenaGru · 06/11/2013 17:47

I am another who is not that bothered about the strict food thing. I can't see how food that has never caused me any harm for the past 30 odd years can suddenly become life threatening. That said I don't like blue cheese, pate(although would avoid that because of the vitamin a rather than "germs") nor runny eggs but I did lick the cake mixture spoon when making cupcakes and I certainly won't be cooking my meat til it is tasteless.

Alcohol I would probably have a bit but I really can't face the thought of it (or coffee, tea or chocolate) Sad

BEEwitched · 06/11/2013 17:58

Advice is also seriously mixed up - at my booking appointment my midwife made sure I knew the 'dos and dont's' and reiterated - NO RARE RED MEAT!!!!

Then I went home with my big purple NHS "how to have a healthy pregnancy" book, and IT says that as long as they're properly seared outside, medium steaks are no issue. Confused And I will make chicken liver pate for Christmas!

Spoke to my high up manager and she told me to stay off sick for another 4 weeks - will have to phone GP tomorrow and see what they say.

BEEwitched · 06/11/2013 17:59

Mitchell - yeah, that's on my list for next week, lovely oozy hot camembert! Or blue cheese pasta - as long as it's hot, it's not a problem.

I was saying to my DH yesterday that I'd love to compile a recipe book for pregnant women full of ways to enjoy 'forbidden' food, but you'd have to be afraid to be sued these days!

MTMD · 06/11/2013 17:59

mitchell, I would also squish some roasted garlic on bread before dipping in Camembert :) It's very good. But I'm off fatty foods at the moment so not for me.

Magpie78 · 06/11/2013 19:15

Hi all MS has notched up a gear today, thought I was coming out the other side at 10 + 3. Felt like I was going to throw up all day from 5am could cry. Work unsympathetic can't work from home and can't eat as feel so rough. Any suggestions gratefully received.

ohcluttergotme · 06/11/2013 19:25

Not really got any helpful suggestions magpie, only that I sympathise. I've been off sick last 3 days as have been feeling that rough too. Also my 4 year old makes me feel sick Hmm.
I saw in another thread someone suggested sherbit lemons help so going to get some tomorrow and hope they do as have to go back to work next week. Good luck

Magpie78 · 06/11/2013 19:26

Will pretty much try anything now....thanks

Vickyvix · 06/11/2013 19:34

All this talk of melting camembert is making my mouth water, that sounds soooooo good!

I keep on getting cravings for really unhealthy food, still on the beige foods which are so bad for me. Crisps taste divine, particularly salted kettle chips and walkers salt and vinegar.

Right now I have a major craving for fish and chips.

I am really pleased to hear about the lion's stamp on eggs meaning they are ok, I've been avoiding runny eggs but I love poached eggs at the weekend, looking forward to Saturday now :)

Stacks · 06/11/2013 19:36

There's loads of suggestions of potential things that can help MS. Citrus is a common one, everything from snifffing lemons to drinking sprite. Personally I drank gallons of lemon juice in water - either fresh squeezed or shop bought bottled juice. Mango is popular in other countries as a cure, I've also heard of peppermint tea (or just sucking mints), ginger...

MyNameIsWinkly · 06/11/2013 19:45

Evening all. Just to say I had an early scan today, saw a little heartbeat and measured at 6+3, which pushes me even closer to the back of the bus with a revised edd of 29/6. I'm so pleased though. I got scanned by the same doctor who diagnosed my mmc in august, and she was delighted for us too!

MarlenaGru · 06/11/2013 19:54

Huge congratulations Winkly
I am sure it was a huge relief.

Lmf679 · 06/11/2013 20:00

Soo it turns out my 5th dec appointment is my booking appointment, not my scan. In my excitement (and prob tiredness) I just saw the date and the leaflet that came with it saying screening programme and assumed. I feel very silly now. So no scan date yet...

MyNameIsWinkly · 06/11/2013 20:03

Thanks marlena, yes it was a massive relief, I keep staring at the little picture in disbelief :)

SicknSpan · 06/11/2013 20:06

Oh ladies my mouth is watering at all these lovely foods - I am another who will be indulging in the naughty things every now and then! Although perhaps my beloved blue steak should be off limits

12 week scan on 20th November. Eek!

MarlenaGru · 06/11/2013 20:16

How lovely Grin

MarlenaGru · 06/11/2013 20:18

I am waiting for DH to cook a stir fry and am about to eat the cat. I am immensely grateful he is cooking as I am too knackered to move but why does it take so long ?! Confused

LadyGoneGaga · 06/11/2013 20:28

Brilliant news, Winkly.

Rare meat is fine as long as it is properly seared on the outside. So a good seared steak or rare roast beef is fine but rare hamburger is not. It's because any Toxoplasmosis contamination (which is the concern) would be on the outside of the meat NOT the inside and the searing would kill it. Good for me because I can't bear well done beef unless it's a stew or something.

I will be drinking a little once past the first trimester. A couple of glasses of wine a week will keep me sane. And I am delighted at the thought of having a glass of champagne on Christmas day. The risk of listeriosis from cheese is so infintessimally small by the way that no one in the UK has EVER had it. Make of that what you will. I don't like pate anyway but it's the Vitamin A content from the liver that is the real problem.

The problem is the government assume that pregnant women are not capable of assessing risk for themsleves so ban everything when much of it is unnecessary. If you are prepared to do your research then a lot of banned things are "allowed".

Liquidambar · 06/11/2013 20:28

oh God. So much to catch up! I had a very busy day at work and didn't had the chance to read during my tea/toilet breaks.

I am loving the food suggestions. I must say I am a bit paranoid about food and I was even having questions on whether it is safe to eat ham Biscuit I guess I am bit influenced by my cultural background. I come from a come country where there are a lot of restrictions on food during pregnancy, e.g. you are not suppose to eat salads unless you eat them at home after using a specif product to "disinfect". Even things such as tomatoes or cucumber need some consideration, on whether it has been peeled or not.

Not very keen on wine. I usually don't drink so that is not an issue. But now I puzzled by Emmazers reference to the longitudinal study. I work in research so I must read that study! But my impression is that the reason why alcohol is banned from pregnancy it is because there is no consensus among researchers on what is the "health limit". I agree that the odd drink won't harm.

SicknSpan · 06/11/2013 20:30

Lovely news winkly :)

Magpie the nausea is really hard isn't it. No miracle ideas here I'm afraid, just fingers crossed it passes soon for all of us.

BEEwitched · 06/11/2013 20:43

It really depends, and so much of it is cultural - I was reading 'Expecting Better', written by an American woman, and she comes to the conclusion that you can discard the listeriosis risk with everything but with deli turkey. Hmm I LIVED off turkey sandwiches those first few weeks!
