bionic, I think I read somewhere that anyone over 35 is considered an older mother. Seems somewhat unfair given that so many women have children at that age and older with no trouble, but I think they tend to go with statistics rather than your own health etc.

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 22:15

I honestly don't get how southerners manage to get through life without gravy, mushy peas, hollands pies, and all the other northern goodness. Not sure how a chippy would still be open without them Confused And this is despite having a lot of family down south. I asked for mushy peas once and my uncle came back with a dodgy half dry deep fried battered bomb of mashed up peas. Envy

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 22:20

I'm in danger of starting to sound like Peter Kay now aren't I?

NoMaybeAboutIt · 31/08/2013 22:24

I too cannot abide jellied eels. It's not the eel bit, it's the cat food jelly they put it in!!

I also don't like chips and gravy

But we do have pie, mash and liquor!!! And I love mushy peas, but you're right hardly any chippies down here sell them!

LyraSilvertongue · 31/08/2013 22:24

Joll, I don't think I've ever been in a southern chippy that doesn't do mushy peas. They're not just a northern thing. I had (eat-in) fish and chips in the chippy just yesterday and they came with mushy peas.

LyraSilvertongue · 31/08/2013 22:26

Never heard of hollands pie before this thread though. Sounds tasty.

XP thought of himself as a bit of a cockney and he loved pie, mash and liquor, jellied eels, in fact any kind of seafood eaten out of a styrofoam cup, mushy peas and pickled gherkins.

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 22:33

I've honestly never found somewhere southern that sells mushy peas Shock But it's more Portsmouth way that I normally am when I go south. Whenever the southern part of the family are visiting, the first meal on the itinerary is a chippy tea and we send them home with food parcels full of hollands pies and puddings Grin

commsgirl · 31/08/2013 22:37

I don't understand why there's no gravy in southern chip shops. It's just not right!

Maybs My town has a pie shop that's open until 4am for a post night out pie fix.

Jol & Pram I don't know what a Hollands pie is. Maybe they're a Lancs thing?

My stomach has definitely changed shape now and I'm looking more pregnant than just like I've overindulged. Which is nice.

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 22:43

Think they might be a Lancs thing actually, you're right. No idea why they don't distribute nationally though...they mostly come frozen so there's no reason not to I don't think.

LyraSilvertongue · 31/08/2013 22:44

Maybe its a London thing then. Mushy peas are certainly nothing rare here.

BionicEar · 31/08/2013 22:45

Ah no offence taken on the "older" mother thing - was just amused by it, especially as after the mw left, DH went, "Gosh she looked about 12yrs didn't she?!" which made me laugh, as DH was definitely showing his age there!

commsgirl · 31/08/2013 22:45

Jol we definitely don't have them in Yorkshire. Wish we did though by the sounds of it!

BionicEar · 31/08/2013 22:48

Urrrgh forgot about mushy peas - no it's just wrong!

Nowhere where I have lived south sell mushy peas.

Though I have been warped living up north... I love chip butties! Mmmmh! Grin

commsgirl · 31/08/2013 22:51

Bionic you need peas on your butty or it's not proper!

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 22:51

Chip barms with gravy and vinegar...amazing! I'm somehow making myself hungry again. Hmm

BionicEar · 31/08/2013 22:53

Oooh now that would be a step too far Commsgirl for a southerner like me! Wink

BionicEar · 31/08/2013 22:54

Getting hungry now! DH out so I can't just wander out and get something from the chippy - wails!

rescoonetwothree · 31/08/2013 22:58

i thought every chippy sold mushy peas too (south west/south)! jellied eels sound horrendous, I've never seen them though?! in bristol theres a shop called pieminster which is so good, and i am now craving.

i am waiting for looking young for my age to pay off, i look extremely studenty and am very squeaky, i thought the midwife was going to fall off her chair when i told her my age and job (it sounds infinitely more professional / fancier than it actually is).

i was in fact at my mums the other week and someone came to the door, they actually asked 'is mummy or daddy in?' i said 'no' and closed the door very firmly with my mother cackling away in the background...

also i have been informed that the thread title now means it has been blocked on some work computers, I'm sorry!! Blush

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 23:02

Sorry Bionic! I ended up buying 3 different packs of hollands pies on my cravings run earlier. The only flavour they didn't have was cheese and onion. That's obviously now the only one I can think about lol.

Luckily, I've managed to get a grip on only giving in to cravings when I'm genuinly hungry.

Kind of sort of ish getting a bump now but with me being chunky already, I just look like I've been pigging out. I'm ridiculously bump hungry now so people get that flash of comprehension when they see me.

BionicEar · 31/08/2013 23:03

DH just came in... and I have promptly sent him out again to get me chips!! Grin Ladies you are naughty talking about chips butties, i think this counts as my 1st official craving! Ha ha! Grin

Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 23:05

Grey - well be done with this one within the week at this rate anyway! Won't be an issue with our strumming title though Wink

rescoonetwothree · 31/08/2013 23:06

joll i know what you mean about being bump hungry! i feel like a fraud!

OP posts:
Jolleigh · 31/08/2013 23:08

A quick thought on a non-Lancs substitute for the pie in a pie butty...I reckon a Gregs potato and meat pie would hold its own too. Or even a Gregs butter pie for people daring enough to go triple-carb Wink (I don't normally eat like this, I promise!)

BionicEar · 31/08/2013 23:09

OOOOOOOH that's a dangerous suggestion Jolleigh - you know what mumsnetters are like about Greggs (in denial)!! Grin
