New thread and ever hopeful as we move into second trimester that we'll all feel wonderful soon...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Thingymajigs · 18/08/2013 14:13

With ds1 he never stopped moving. Very active to the point of painful kicks. With ds2 he moved once or twice a day at night which concerned the midwife and had me convinced I was carrying a girl.
Not much evidence of any movement yet with this one. Some tickly feelings and a bubble type sensation during yoga this morning but its still very early.
Lovely news tiega. I have two boys and can only imagine another boy so a girl would shock me a little I think but DP is convinced its a girl. I always refer to baby as 'he' though.

Thingymajigs · 18/08/2013 14:14

tiegy, sorry, hard to refer back to names when posting from phone.

misskatamari · 18/08/2013 14:19

Wow I didn't know some places don't tell you the sex at the 20 week NHS scan - that's so mean! Is it just because they don't want to risk being wrong?

Somanychanges · 18/08/2013 14:20

Well marzipanned I pray your prediction is right as the only way I can cope with another boy is if he is a quiet one.

My son has SN and is as noisy and hyperactive as they come. He is a character and completely adorable and no doubt will put all his energy into something amazing one day. But I must admit I would find it very hard to cope with another boy just like him.

So either a quiet girl or a quiet boy for me please,

vix206 · 18/08/2013 14:22

A few years ago I heard (although it may be an urban myth) that in some areas they don't tell because of a cultural issue whereby some parents choose not to go further with the pregnancy if it is a girl.

Like I say this could be nonsense but that's what was said on a thread on mumsnet back in 2010 when I was pregnant with DS. :(

marzipanned · 18/08/2013 14:23

missk our hospital says it's because there's a strict time limit for the scan and they want to use that time to look for abnormalities, growth, etc.
My guess is that it's not always obvious what the sex is and they don't want people begging for a longer scan in order to find out, but if they see it while they're carrying out the scan anyway it wouldn't do any harm to say... I think their policy should be "we'll tell you if we notice but we're not looking specially"

Oh I should add that silly boy/girl theory was based on the 12 week scan, not on later activity!

vix206 · 18/08/2013 14:25

Somany, I think Ava is a lovely name (but sadly i just know too many so its not on my list) but not sure about Avah. Is it pronounced the same as Ava?

Only commenting as you asked who's side we are on :)

vix206 · 18/08/2013 14:27

Lol marzipanned :) it reminds me of my 20 weeks scan with DS. SOnographer asked us if we wanted to know and we said yes. H then spent about a minute labouring the point that it wasn't always possible and that this was a medical scan etc etc.

Put the probe on my tummy and first thing we saw was a very big, very obvious set of male genitalia Grin

Somanychanges · 18/08/2013 14:46

Vix yes Ava is the same as Avah. I just prefer the Avah spelling as it is not as commonly spelt that way, plus matches the end of my children's names.

I keep saying the name in the hope it grows on DH but he really does seem dead set against it. Sad

I can't wait until the next month or so when those of us who are finding out all start revealing what sex we are having. I wonder which sex will dominate if any.

Somanychanges · 18/08/2013 14:48

Oh and with regards to the 20wk scan and not being told I know of quite a few places in Scotland who don't tell and their reason is that they may be sued if they get it wrong.

I wonder if those hospitals don't have as advanced equipment as others?

marzipanned · 18/08/2013 14:58

Lol vix Grin That's what I was hoping for though I'm suspecting a girl so I'm not sure whether it works quite the same way!

somany we are in Scotland. I'm not sure about that but I do know that obstetrics is the most sued branch of medicine! I am doing the same thing re the name with DH. I read on another thread that one woman who'd been arguing with her partner about the baby's name waited until the birth, and after so many hours of labour and whatever else, when she said "this baby is called xx" he didn't dare argue!
By the way, how's your sickness these days? Are you doing a bit better?

tiegysmum · 18/08/2013 15:02

At our scan yesterday it wasn't hard to tell the sex at all... We even have a picture of it... Lol... A pic for his 18th party! we where scanned in Scotland Somany and had the options with the girls to find out too, although we chose not to, think its probably the same old story... One rule for one & another for another! X

jazzcat28 · 18/08/2013 18:28

Possible first craving alert... whilst preparing the dinner I had a sudden urge to bake fruit cake.. Thankfully there was some dried fruit and flour lurking in the cupboard. Tis now in the oven. Not quite sure what came over me but DH very excited at the prospect of random cake baking during the next 6 months!

laura0007 · 18/08/2013 18:43

Lol jazzcat! Cravings are never healthy things are they! I seem to be addicted to pickled onion flavoured monster munch the last couple of weeks. Not sure if its a craving or not but the last time I are them I was probably about 14!

SugarMiceInTheRain · 18/08/2013 18:48

Been ages since I was on here as I've been away/ busy with school holidays etc.

When I lived in Coventry and was having DS1 they wouldn't tell you the gender due to growing evidence that certain groups of people were suddenly opting for termination on finding out they were having girls :(

I have started feeling movement now - very exciting - quite early as I'm only 13 weeks but apparently you usually feel it earlier when you've had a baby already. I have a ridiculous bump for only 3 months - an obvious pregnancy bump rather than just the spare tyre I started to develop at this stage when pregnant with my boys. Everyone says they reckon I'm having a girl this time as this pregnancy has been so very different from my previous ones. I am desperate to know and have booked a private 4D scan to have after my 20 week NHS one, just in case they can't tell! Grin Got an amazing Groupon offer so got it for £29 instead of £80 - yippee.

marzipanned · 18/08/2013 18:52

Yum, fruit cake! Are we still allowed to lick the bowl?

laura I quite fancy a packet of those now. So ironic how before I got pregnant I had an absurdly healthy diet and now am reduced to eating pizza for breakfast...

vix206 · 18/08/2013 18:54

I made chocolate cupcakes today and did lick the spoon afterwards, raw egg and all. Did it with last pregnancy too and all was fine Smile

Livin on the edge Wink

Shropshiremummy2bLaFay · 18/08/2013 19:18

Whoa Vix, you're a bloody mentalist!!

I've just stacked the logs and am about to mow the lawns, I have to do so whilst avoiding the farmer who screams at me to go indoors and rest. I've had to hide from him twice on dog walks, he thinks I'm playing with fire!

DH's sister is giving us EVERYTHING for the baby (x2 as she had twins), I know I sound ungrateful but I'm a BIG shopper so I'm a little disappointed. Although it will be handy to have a maxi cosi for each car. I'm going to put the money I've saved towards an enormous Mulberry handbag, as sadly they don't do a nappy bag! They're missing a trick there! X

marzipanned · 18/08/2013 19:24

Shropshire I am now very jealous. We live in an old house and there is a fireplace but it can't be used for anything except a wood burning stove, and since we only rent I don't see the point of putting one in.
I'm trying to persuade DH that we need to buy a house before baby arrives with proper functional fireplace. A winter baby needs a fire!!

marzipanned · 18/08/2013 19:25

(Assuming that's why you were stacking logs and not just because of your wood fetish) (okay that sounded wrong)

DawnOfTheDee · 18/08/2013 19:31

I've made buns and brownies this week and licked the spoon both times. "If you're not livin' on the edge you're taking up too much room" it's not really. I also let DD lick the bowl too which officially makes me a Bad Mother.

Littleen · 18/08/2013 19:34

I keep craving pot noodles, even though I know they really aren't healthy -.- my other cravings are salt liquorice and water melon. :P

marzipanned · 18/08/2013 19:36

Dawn you'd be a Bad Mother if you didn't let her! My Mum used to have to draw a line down the middle of the bowl so me and my brother could get equal lickings... if one spoon went to the other side there was war.

Right, once I get the urge to bake there will be lots of batter eating spoon licking going on.

laura0007 · 18/08/2013 19:41

All this talk of baking is making me feel hungry! I'm going to see a psychic tomorrow night at my friends house. Going to wear something baggy so she can't see my bump and see if she mentions anything about Hubert! I'm slightly sceptical, I'm only going along to make numbers up really.

misskatamari · 18/08/2013 19:55

Ooooh I bought some lemons the other day so hopefully can make lemon drizzle cake tomorrow. Also want to make a plum and almond tart - although I imagine I will decide I can't be bothered alas!

Oooh let us know how it goes Laura!
