New thread and ever hopeful as we move into second trimester that we'll all feel wonderful soon...

I'm always thinking about how names will be shortened, so Laurence or Earnest would be Larry and Ernie - do you like those too? I've found myself really liking a lot of Arabic names, but given that we have a Spanish surname and are utterly Celtic looking (very likely to have a ginger curly-haired child) I'm not sure it would all work. Still liking Bam Bam - a name like that can only take a child far.

Bearfrills · 13/08/2013 12:08

I'm another one who booked the 20wk scan at the 12wk scan (4th October) and rang the MW to arrange my 16wk check myself (5th September).

pettyprudence · 13/08/2013 12:13

I have a girls name lined up but stuffed if its a boy! I like names with links to the family, which I suppose is a bit trendy at the moment (old fashioned names) but all the men for generations have been called Dave or John on both sides of the family (except for an Arthur and a Gilbert - we have already used Arthur). A ds or dd will also have a welsh middle name as I'm a bit patriotic Smile
I suppose Gilbert with nn Gil or Bertie could work but I don't LOVE it and it feels like a bit too much of an old man theme as I have an Arthur. It would make my gm VERY happy though as that was her fathers name.

For a girl it will be Elizabeth (just about every females first or second name in my family) nn Betty with maybe Sian as a middle name.

Bearfrills · 13/08/2013 12:21

I like Matilda for a girl and Freddie for a boy (but Fredrick on birth certificate so he can use the full name for jobs applications, etc) or Sebastian.

Naturally DH dislikes them all.

Shropshiremummy2b · 13/08/2013 12:23

gnitting on a similar vein to Bam Bam, I love Wilma and Wilomena, shortened to Willa or Willow. DH is not so keen.

EeyoreIsh · 13/08/2013 12:25

bear I love the name Freddie!

Shropshiremummy2b · 13/08/2013 12:32

pretty Gilbert is soooo cute, as is Gil and Bertie....
And I would love to call my little girl Betty after my Grandma but DH just keeps saying 'Ooooooh Betty' in a Frank Spencer accent.

LovesToBake · 13/08/2013 12:38

So following my realisation last night that my bump has suddenly popped right out, I made the mistake of standing on the scales this morning. I also seem to have put on several pounds overnight. I think I'm up about 5lbs now on my pre-preg weight which I'm sure is more than I had by this stage last time. Sending DH into the loft this weekend to dig out my maternity clothes, need them urgently!

marzipanned · 13/08/2013 12:42

Ugh, another one here feeling totally rubbish today. Projectile vomited up a punnet of raspberries half an hour ago - but no matter as I ALWAYS keep my trusty sick bowl to hand, am never without it! Even on the loo - you never know when things will start coming out both ends.

Argh, WHEN are we going to start feeling better? I can't bear the thought of this lasting the whole pregnancy, I really can't. Everyone said 12 weeks...then 14 weeks..now 16 weeks...

Eeyore Matthew also means gift of God if you like that? I love Theo but DH vetoed it.

Laura I think Leo is gorgeous.

Bear Sebastian was on our list but neither of us liked Seb, what would you use as a nn?

gnittinggnome · 13/08/2013 12:46

pretty I am seriously thinking of Arthur, if we have a boy. Good solid masculine name, but not too fuddy-duddy. Gilbert is also very cool (was secretly looking for something to shorten to Bertie) but then we'd all share an initial, something DH is not so keen on.

My Greek hairdresser was explaining Greek naming traditions to me, so your first born son is given the same name as the father's father, and possibly your first born daughter is given the same name as the mother's mother. That works for my mum, but absolutely not for DH's dad!

tinypolkadot · 13/08/2013 12:50

I'm jealous of all this name talk, dh refuses to discuss names until nearer the time, no matter how often I try to slip it into conversation!

I read a good tip a while ago about reading the credits at the end of TV programmes and films as some good name combinations often come up.

Dh and I do like the name Alice (we got together in Alice Springs, so I quite like the romanticism of it) I just can't help thinking of that character from the Vicar of Dibley and dopey Alice from Eastenders!

Love the names Leo, Matthew and Theodore. Also love Elizabeth/Libby

Bearfrills · 13/08/2013 13:03

I'm not sure of the nickname marzipanned, I think that'll come in time. I'm not keen on Seb either and Bastian is too Neverending Story :o

DD was supposed to be Amelia on her birth certificate but we were going to call her Mimi for short. Instead she's Amelia and her nickname is always Meely or Emilio.

I'm going to totally out myself probably but DS is Nathaniel, he gets Nate/Natey for short although at the minute he gets Spans which is short for Spaniel (he's obsessed with rhyming words so Nathaniel became Nathaniel-Spaniel which has evolved to Span or Spans).

LovesToBake · 13/08/2013 13:11

The name we love for a girl is Rosie. Kind of used up our two favourite boys names on DS (first & middle name) so if it's a boy we'll be a bit stuck. Roll on the 20w scan!

littlestgirlguide · 13/08/2013 13:31

I'm starting to think I would like to find out the sex so I can be a bit more prepared with names - If we have a boy it will be something Richard (a family name on both sides) but no idea what the something will be, I can't think of a single boys name I like :-/ as for a girl, I like Imogen, which DH hates.
The Greek tradition of naming a girl after the mothers mother would be plain boring in my case, DM has a very dull name, and my grandmas both had the same name.... Met any Brendas under 50 lately? :-)

misskatamari · 13/08/2013 13:51

Hmm Marzipanned sorry you're still feeling shite too. Lets hope 16 weeks is the miracle one!

Names wise I like Scarlett (DH hates it) and Tabitha for a girl. DH thinks Tabitha is okay - I used to dislike it but I've warmed to it a lot, probably as I love Tabitha in Tabitha's salon take over lol! DH like Twelve (told you it was a wtf "name"!) I do quite like it but very unsure with whether I could bring myself to name a baby that.

Boy wise I like the name Kit and DH likes it too - but for boy number two as he wants to call boy number 1 Reacher as we both love Jack Reacher books. I actually quite like it - but again am wary of the wtf were you thinking from others!

Gosh mine are so the worst aren't they! I'm never starting a baby names thread - ill be laughed off mumsnet!

Doppler arrived today and had a quick go and couldn't find anything - thought we nearly had but then nope. Will try again later on. If no luck ill try and leave it a few days as I know they can be really hard to find and I don't wanna stress myself out - and if no look its getting relegated to the bottom of a drawer and ill ignore that I even have it!

ch1134 · 13/08/2013 14:00

just braved the scales for the 1st time in 16 weeks... gained NO weight! I'm not worried as I eat well and feel well, but being as a bump is forming and my boobs have grown, I was feeling a bit fat and worried I'd gained too much... phew!

jazzcat28 · 13/08/2013 14:02

Another one here whose DH won't seriously discuss names yet. Last night he suggested Arthur as it sounds like Arrrrrrrrrghf**k which he thinks is the noise I'll make as it pops out. Cue 10 mins of him giggling to himself. Hmm

I like Abigail, Emily, Jessica and Bethany for a girl, or Lucas, Thomas, Jack or George for a boy.

Middle name would have to be Alexander or Alexandra for family reasons.

LovesToBake · 13/08/2013 14:03

So I just casually ate two lunches! Was feeling weak and nauseous about 11:15am so popped out for my trusty M&S chicken caesar wrap and then about 1ish grabbed a baked sweet potato with tuna mayo from the work canteen. On the plus side, I haven't thought I could stomach a sweet potato until now (and we usually eat them a lot) so I'm really pleased I've had a pretty balanced meal. On the down side, I really am going to end up as big as a house if I keep going at this rate!

EeyoreIsh · 13/08/2013 14:10

lovestobake when my appetite started to return as nausea eased, I was so hungry all the times. There were a few days I had two lunches, as well as snacks. Now I've felt better for about two weeks (give or take the odd awful day), my appetite has settled back to normal.

laura0007 · 13/08/2013 14:14

Misskat it took me ages to find the heartbeat with my Doppler. It's much much lower than I was looking! Was below my knicker line on the right and I'm 15+1 now! I imagined the huge bump I had was baby Confused obviously not! Just cakes and biscuits by the looks of things!!!

vix206 · 13/08/2013 14:22

I'm 17 weeks today and no news of 20 weeks scan. I was supposed to book at my 12 week one but the receptionist said they had no appointments left so to wait for one through the post. Fabulous!!

tinypolkadot · 13/08/2013 14:24

Can you ring them vix? Sounds like they're leaving it quite late!

vix206 · 13/08/2013 14:33

I have my 16 wk apt tomorrow so will ask the midwife about it then. Smile

barebranches · 13/08/2013 14:36

Milkandtwo · 13/08/2013 16:14

gnittinggnome what about Albert shortened to Bertie? Or I have friends that have just called theirs Bertie, not short for anything...
Eeyore Theodore is my top one at the mo as we can shorten it to Ted or Theo - versatile!
Misskatamari Scarlett is on our list, Lettie for short as it's what our surname should have been if a past family member wasn't trying to hide an illegitimate birth 'back-in-the-day' Shock Wink Also my DH liked Tabitha but I worried that about the nn Tabbie as I already have a rep for being a mad cat lady and folks might assume I'm trying to pretend it's a feline. The amount of clobber I have been gathering with ears does nothing to help me... My friends little boy is called Kit and it's lovely.
On the doppler, when you have another go make sure you do it really low, just above pubic bone and an inch or so to either side of your middle line and angle it up and down lots from there. Loads of gel too. It's like safe-breaking. Good luck and if nothing I agree relegate it to the bottom drawer for a few weeks!

Some lovely names flying about - what good taste y'all have!
