lilianna - nice to get some reassurance from someone who's been there :) The way I see it, other people's birth stories can't tell me what it will be like for me, I'll just have to wait until I get there. Agree that some people take pleasure in telling you horror stories - DH and I joke that MIL telling me the circs of his birth put this bub back a few years!

Finally bit the bullet and went to Mothercare today to buy some basics. I'm one of those who doesn't really enjoy shopping so we made a list of essentials and did a really targeted shop. Set up the moses basket in the corner of our bedroom - starting to feel really close now. Also got unglamourous things like nappies and maternity pads. Must start on my bag soon (although still planning for homebirth)

Evening LadiesSmile

Sorry Kayzed - didn't mean to sound quite so negative re birthplan!

Have had lovely w/e.
DD aged 4 had a ballet rehearsal today - getting ready for the big show next Sunday. I am soo proud of her and just can't wait to see her on the stage!!Smile
Will be 38 +1 on the day of the show and hope that LO will stay put at least until after that day. Perfect timing would be if he was to come the day afterSmile ...did you hear that LOSmile

Still no news from Jane. She is probably busy looking after her lovely little new arrival!Smile

Hugs to all

Hi all,
Just a quick visit; hope to post more tomorow. Had a really busy few days so not been on and can't really keep up!
Hope Jane is well and that LO is safely here.
Saw midwife on Weds and all ok though she laughed her ass off at the big ironing mark I have on my bump! Apparently it's quite common for pg women to iron onto their tummies. Made me feel a bit less of an idiot!
12 days til the section! EEk!
Re scary birth stories; your baby will come how it comes and the main thing is that you are both ok. Everyone is different and so is each birth. Try not to worry about things that might never happen. FWIW my very personal view is that birth plans shouldn't be tablets of stone ( I didn't have one last time and don't intend to this time). I think that you can set up a real sense of "failure" if you have an idealised birth writen down and it doesn't work out that way. Keeping an open mind is probably the best way to manage your expectations. Just my thoughts; maybe they'll reassure someone!
Sleep well, gals. It's sooooo hot and I'm so cumbersome!!! I feel like Moby Dick trapped in treacle!

kbaby · 18/06/2006 22:37

Arghh tonight ive spent the last 3hrs trying to assemble the new buggy and fit a buggypod to it. My fingers are so sore from tightening straps, screws etc and the instructions are useless. I still havent done it so Ill have to ask my friends husband to help as I know hes done my friends.

DH didnt finish the bedroom, he managed 1 coat on 3 walls and then found a lame excuse as to why he couldnt do more.

Everyone has commented on how my bump has dropped. Im also overhearing people talk about me. Today in a queue I heard some girl say that she was more round and not all front. I think its because I am all front and from behind I look normal and then turn around and people get quite a shock. A friends description of me was a pipecleaner that swallowed a basketball.

HC -your not to think that im next, ive got far too much to do plus I dont feel ready yet. Give me another 2 weeks and then I may consider it Grin

Hi,

At work, so can't stay on for long.. hope everyone well.

Can you please help? What is the difference between a duvet cover and an embroided quilt? Is it as simple as it sounds (you cover the embroided quilt with the duvet cover?) Got all Mothercare's Winnie the Pooh stuff and was reading last night about the quilts and stuff - why would I need both? Can someone please put my mind to rest?

And also are bottle warmer a good idea or not? and why would you need to keep milk cool, do babies not like room temperature milk or does something happen to it? How do you go on if you are bottle feeding and want to go out for the full day - i.e. seaside?

God, I'm such a dunce Blush

Have we had our first birth yet? I'm really excited.

Take care everyone

you are not meant to use a dover cover on a new born baby- infact until they are a year old.
I just used blankets and sheets.
I'm not sure about bottle warmers i never used one just put the bottle into a jug of boiling water- you tend to find by the time you have done babys nappy the milk is ready. Babys like there milk warm.

lilianna · 19/06/2006 10:16

if you are making a batch of bottles once they have cooled down you will need to put them in the fridge.
I am planning to bf this time, i didn't with ds1 and dd but did bf and bottle feed with ds2- had to mix as i didn't have enough milk to supply him with through-out the day. Just enough for 2 feeds one at night and one in the morning.

just checked a post meant to put duvet not dover cover

IamBlossom · 19/06/2006 10:36

Kay1981 - if you are bottle feeding and are going out for the day, you can buy these containers in Mothercare which are round with a lid and have three separate compartments in them. You measure out the correct number of scoops of milk powder into each compartment and take the appropriate number of bottles out with you with the right number of ounces of cooled boiled water (ie, 6 ounces of water = 6 scoops baby powder) Then when you want to give a bottle you tip the powder into the water and shake it all up and there you go! Water can be room temp, my DS never minded that. So you have to get organsied about washing, sterilising the bottles and boiling the kettle, pouring in the boiled water and leaving them to stand to cool, it takes at least 40 minutes to cool them.

I bought a bottle warmer last time but it drove me insane as unless you are standing there watching it it makes them too hot and then you have to cool them. Either stand it in boiling water or use the microwave, you can experiment with how many seconds is right for you, we do 25 secs on an 800 watt microwave. Obviously you would need to test it before you give it to baby.

HTH.

Kayzed - minor hijack - I am nearing embarking on potty training with DS, 21 months, I can't quite decide whether to wait till he is out of nursery altogether or to do it now when he is still going in afternoons, to be honest they will probably do it much better than I will.

My question is how do you "catch" them before they do their poo in their nappy, or their wee for that matter? I can tell when DS is doing it but by then it's too late....he loves to sit on the potty, but won't do anything in it. I have bought some pull up pants/nappies for easier access....any tips for you or anyone else on how to actually get started???? I talk to him when I am on the loo and I think he associates the potty/loo with doing the buisness - I have tried tipping his poo into his potty so he gets that association (lovely this isn't it! :))

Morning ladies

kay-I used to take made up bottles in a cool bag out with me then a flask of hot water and a jug so could warm up the bottle. Have discovered a travel bottle warmer in Mothercare for £8.99-plugs into cigarette lighter so that is next on my shopping list as this would be far easier methinks. Have dug the bottle warmer out for use in the house but the others are right-if you leave it a fraction too long you end up standing the bottle in a bowl full of cold water and in the summer it takes ages to cool down.

I associate duvet covers with proper beds and used a sheet and blanket at first and a cotbed coverlet in the winter which is the equivalent of a blanket and a sheet so DD was as warm as toast.

And you are not a dunce! Grin

Have just swapped all DD's clothes into her new furniture and am sweating. Also fed up of having to poo in the middle of everything and TMI it is diaorrhea at its worse!

Anyway-love to all and have a good day.

Morning all heffalumps! (Or is it just me?)

Hope you all had a nice weekend. HC Sounds like your body is clearing itself out ready to pop!! Spub, 12 days!! LOL at "Moby Dick trapped in treacle"
Hope you and baby are well, Jane, we're all thinking of you.

As for horror stories about giving birth, nixnoo, sometimes it's worse when a recently delivered mum says something to you like, "oh I won't tell you what it was like..." cos it's that bad. Anyways it's different for everyone. I read somewhere that the older generation tell the worst stories, so that us young ones go in thinking it's going to be horrific, and then it's actually not that bad, whereas all those 'gentle birth' people say how wonderful it is, and then you get the shock of your life! All I can say is, we wouldn't keep doing it if it was so bad!!

Went to Boots at the weekend and bought all the stuff, pads, nappies etc. Washed out all DS's newborn vests and sleepsuits, so LO's bag is ready, just to pop my toothbrush in. Moses basket covered are washed and aired... So we're getting there! 37 weeks is considered full term isn't it? So three days to go!!!

Have a good day everyone, take it Very Easy now...

Annie 36+4 (one hundred bog roll sheets)

OldieMum · 19/06/2006 11:52

Agalch - I had a planned c-section last time, because DD was a transverse lie and will be having another one next week, because DS is in an unstable lie. The c-section was very straightforward. The epidural was not particularly painful and after that, I just had a sensation as though someone was rummaging around in my abdomen. The next few days were challenging, as I could not move much, and DH had to do a lot of the babycare like nappy changing. My memory is that this period was quite short, though I was advised to limit walking up and downstairs and, as you may know, was not allowed to drive for 6 weeks (you are not insured for this period after a c-section, because you will be unable to do an emergency stop). Overall, I'd say it's not as big a deal as some people make out, but it is major abdominal surgery, so you need to take care of yourself afterwards.

I'm signing off now, fellow July-ers. I am due to go into hospital tomorrow afternoon, for observation, and the c-section is planned for the 27th. So I shan't be home until around the 1st or 2nd of July. Good luck to all of you.

Anopheles · 19/06/2006 11:55

Good Luck to you OldieMum!! Chat to you when you have LO with you. {{HUGS}}

AggiePanther · 19/06/2006 11:57

No Annie, it's not just you :) I'm feeling ginormous atm, can't wait for this baby to arrive.
Went to see the consultant last thurs and baby is almost engaged (between 2 and 3 fifths in pelvis) so that explains a lot of the grindy feelings I've been getting low down. She said that she'll see me on the 13th July (2 days before edd) if LO hasn't arrived, to discuss induction as they don't want me to do the usual 10-days-overdue-before-induction thing due to my heart problems. So at least I know I've got 4 weeks at the very most to wait. Hope it's not that long though, night times are a nightmare!
I wonder how JaneOT is getting on...how exciting that we're have our first baby already!! It's gone so quickly...remember when we couldn't wait for our 12 week scans :)

AggiePanther · 19/06/2006 11:59

OOh good luck oldie mum :) Make the most of the rest in the next week. Next time you post you'll have your baby Grin

jersey · 19/06/2006 12:13

Good luck Olidemum

Lots of period pains here yesterday but seem to have gone again for now.

Got the double pram down from the loft yesterday to make sure the rain cover we had got fitted and check it was clean. Also brought down the mattress for the moses basket and washed the cover and sheets so guess we are as ready as we are going to be Grin.

Hope Jane has delivered and is recovering well. Any news ipod????

HC def sounds like you could be next as it sounds like your body is clearing out ready.

Yes!!! Last essay done, going in the post tomorrow after my hypertension clinic appointment. We be back on then.

Good luck everyone.

spub · 19/06/2006 13:10

Hi everyone and good luck Oldiemum! My section s 3 days after yours so fingers crossed we both have an okay time of it.
Agalch -hopefully me and Oldie will be able to post some reasuring info once we've been through the sections. Can't believe your wee one is still breech. This wee monkey was transverse for long enough and it was much more comfortable once he'd turned. Now he's just doing headers on my pelvis.....!
Sounds like we're all getting there. My bag is pretty much packed, too.
Anyone else constantly thirsty?
No diabetes or anything happening but I'm swigging back liquid like a mad camel (peeing it back out again almost instantly, right enough!!!)

nixnoo · 19/06/2006 13:13

thanks for all the advice!
Ia gree - it is best to believe you will have a good labour, and go in with a good attitude, but be flexible to any circumstances that may occurr.

LO is OFFICIALLY full term today! WOW! Grin

Am supping my raspberry leaf tea - quite like it- and I don't know if it co-incidence or not but I swear I can feel little internal movings of the uterus...
although I have VERY sore sides today - do you think it is a final growth spurt, or maybe the baby dropping? It was still "free" at my last check up last week.

Happy Mondays all
:)
