(Bad doctor again.. Not you of course)

MrsO27 · 30/05/2013 11:45

On the gel polish, I got a shellac manicure recently on holiday. I absolutely love gel manicures as they last so much longer and retain their shine better than a standard manicure (they last for ages and ages on your toes!) - however, there seems to be some online chat about the removal method (soaking off in acetone) being bad for you if you're pregnant. I read up on this (after the polish was on my nails - doh!) and got a bit paranoid so instead of soaking off i waited until the polish started to lift at the edges and just peeled it off instead. Not great for my nails (but neither is acetone) and I have super-strong nails at the moment anyway (one of the benefits of pregnancy!) so they have coped fine (just used some extra cuticle oil on them afterwards). Also, avoid gel polish when you're nearer your due date as I think in certain situations (perhaps if you're taken for an emergency c-section) they need one of your nails polish free. I think this has something to do with monitoring the colour of the skin underneath your nail. A friend's husband got in a panic last year when she was in labour and they started prepping her for theatre and asked him if it was normal polish she had on or shellac! He, of course, didn't have a clue!! Much easier for them to remove if it's the standard stuff, which it was.

Natalieand · 30/05/2013 12:32

mrso the nail polish thing is because the monitor that measured the oxygen levels in your blood is placed on the finger tip/nail and nail polish can prohibit an accurate reading xx

falcon that's terrible your doctor treated your that's I agree, speak to your midwife and see what support she can offer xx

Ellie15 · 30/05/2013 12:43

I'm so sorry the doctor was rubbish falcon, I also agree you should contact your midwife. I too have a history of depression (like so many) and we discussed it at my first appointment, she stressed to me to contact her so she could offer all the support I'd need. You are being so strong, remember you've gotten through this once already you can beat it again!

roofio87 · 30/05/2013 12:49

mrs0 good point about hospitals not liking nail polish if you end up needing a c section
when I had an op a few years ago I had to remove all nail polish including all my toes so.probs not worth it in am.emergency!! I've soaked mine off while pregnant, I just made sure it was in a very well ventilated room (ie with the.French doors open) and I wasn't too worried. you can always get the salon to file the polish off, not good for nails but would get it off without the acetone!!

TheFalconsmistress · 30/05/2013 13:00

Thanks everyone I have just booked a mw appointment next one available is next friday but at least she should be able to help more xx

Shirehobbit · 30/05/2013 13:09

Hope she can help, falcon - next Friday seems a long way off, but you know where we all are in the meantime Smile

I'm just going to have a little mini-rant myself - sorry.
DH has just told me that he's playing football tonight, staying over with the boys tomorrow night, one of the same boys will be stopping over on Saturday night and he's playing in a football tournament on Sunday.

I'm not going to moan (publicly or at him) but I can't do any of those kind of things anymore and am feeling a bit lonely and rough at the moment and him continuing as normal isn't helping.
Just because I was ready for this new phase of our lives (ahem) doesn't mean I don't miss the old, more carefree, times.
Meh.

OrangeBlossom2 · 30/05/2013 15:15

Falcon that is rubbish :( I hope the midwife is more help. I don't imagine you want to start the medicine after the dr said basically it isn't safe. Sounds like he/she was in a rush to get through patients and couldn't be bothered to talk to you about all the options properly. Do you have different gps you can choose from? Maybe request a different one and go back again?

Hugs also shire hobbit. Always important to have someone to moan to!

Shootingstarsandcomets · 30/05/2013 15:53

That gp sounds really rubbish falcon. Hope your midwife is more understanding and helpful.
Yes shire I would moan too! It's the way life is though unfortunately. It's always us making the sacrifices. When ds was 2 weeks old DH went on a work thing in London and called me to say that the sushi in nobu (one of my faves pre pregnancy) had gone downhill and the cocktails in the bar they were in were rubbish. It was 4am and I was feeding our son and had had barely an hours sleep, he had no idea why I was cross Confused. Men are another breed!

Umlauf · 30/05/2013 16:09

Oh falcon so sorry to hear your doctor was like that. Obviously lots of meds are not recommended in pregnancy but there is such a thing as compassion and empathy!! I agree definitely speak to a midwife about it. And good for you for recognising it was him not you!!

Hmmm I haven't got round to removal yet but the acetone thing is supposed to be ok as I asked before I bought it all, but I take your point about well ventilated rooms so ill do that roofio . DH is a chemist and works with acetone all the time so hopefully its not too bad for me as he always gets it on his clothes I wash...

Baby kicking away as I type! But the anterior placenta makes it feel more like gas still!

Had a 'lovely' chat with a friend today about how much danger I'm putting the baby in by being so fat.im going to give it gestational diabetes apparently and am very selfish.... Hmmm.. I dislike the Spanish blunt honesty. Sad

TheFalconsmistress · 30/05/2013 16:25

Lol if the spanish think your fat umlauf I think they would start running for cover if they saw me mistaking me for the giant i am :P I have decided to forget about the doctor for the moment or i will just get upset. On the good news front I have booked my holiday to butlins in the easter holidays next year, we are going with our best friends and their kids too :)

I am still in a buggy dilemma i was supposed to get two second hand but got let down so I have went back to looking at new. I would love a bee for the car but can't justify the cost i may get a maclaren, I want to buy something good so i don't end up buying tons as she is growing. I already have a silver cross pram for walking and early days but no way would it fit in the car!!

OrangeBlossom2 · 30/05/2013 16:37

Definitely agree on getting a good pushchair. My sister is contemplating buying her 5th or 6th at the moment because my niece can now escape from her current one! They bought them all very cheaply second hand but probably amounts to as much as one carefully chosen good one in the end.

Umlauf who needs enemies! I read "French children don't throw food" recently and that is the attitude in France too. The French suggested amount of weight gain is lower and there is a culture of staying as slim as possible during and losing it all very quickly afterwards in Paris apparently. Maybe It's a European thing. As long as you arent going crazy on the snacking and unless you actually have symptoms of diabetes or it comes up at your check ups I wouldn't worry about it (is that one of the things they check urine for every time?)

GTbaby · 30/05/2013 16:44

Umf. Are you kidding?!? Tell your friend to f£&@ themselves.

That's all I have to say about that.

Ps I'm over weight. And with having OC (prob with liver function, only symptom is itchy feet n hands) last time. My chance of GF is high. But I didn't get it last time, so I expect the same this time. And I full understand how u feel with those comments. As I get them to. Hmm

Flyer747 · 30/05/2013 16:47

On the gel polish removal, instead of soaking off in a pot of acetone...then try using cotton balls soaked in acetone, apply to your fingers then wrap then individually in tin foil, the tin foil acts generates more heat and will lift the gel polish much quicker and the vapour from the acetone is hardly noticeable.

Shire I know what you mean, it gets on my nerves too....DP has nights out quite a lot and I can't go plus he is off on two stag dos in July, Marbella and Ibiza, I'm not over the moon...My friends tell me for the men it doesn't become real until the baby arrives...I miss my carefree nights out too.

roofio87 · 30/05/2013 16:55

yes.flyer that's how I get mine off!!
just sat here watching my tummy move every time I get s kick, its the weirdest thing ever!! totally freaks dp out!!Grin

MotherOfNations · 30/05/2013 17:06

Pay no attention Umlauf. As my mum would say, some people are too pass-remarkable.

I'm scanning on the 6th Natalie and have a midwife appointment the day before so will hopefully get to hear the heart beat. Unfortunately Dp can't come with me as he's just started a new job and doesn't think they'll take to kindly to him having days off already, especially as it's only a 6month contract and he'll need time off when the baby arrives.
My friend said she'll come with me which is a good excuse for meeting early and going for lunch first.

claphammama · 30/05/2013 17:34

hi all - what a day at work... just catching my breath.

flyer they don't change that much I'm afraid! DP is also off on stag do end of June - 4 nights...! Also in Marbella. Is Marbella becoming a new stag do destination..? Scary... I'm so not pleased about him going - don't fancy a long weekend on my own these days and also the guy who is getting married is a dog and has cheated on all his previous girlfriends. I'm afraid I have very low tolerance for people like this... thankfully he is the only non decent one in the group. I also loathed him last night for opening my favourite wine right in front of me. I'm not saying he should never drink because I can't drink but please... my favourite wine...??? And he is going to Bali in early September for an offsite. Bali?!!

shire I totally understand and I'm also much more needy and clingy these days. Is he balancing it at least by taking you out for fun you can still have? Whatever everyone says, having babies is a much greater sacrifice for women than men. I'm OK with it now as had my DS when I was 33 so quite late and had lots of traveling and fun before having him. I still get frustrated sometimes and DP travels a lot with his job...

falcon this sucks. Definitely go back. I've heard that some GPs can now prescribe acupuncture on NHS. I know several people who have had it for anxiety / depression. Could it be something to try?

OK - running to pick up DS from the holiday club! It never stops!

roofio87 · 30/05/2013 17:48

at least my dp has learnt where to draw the line yesterday he declared "I might do the tough muddet challenge this year" (a 2 day extreme indurance obstacle marathon event) me "ok, when is it?" dp "fifth of October" (my dd is the fourth!) I just looked at him till he twigged and just said "oh yeah, maybe next year!!" Wink

Flyer747 · 30/05/2013 17:48

Claphammama, yes Marbella is the new hen do/stag do place to be....I cancelled the hen do I was due to go on in June to Portugal because I'd not enjoy myself when everyone else is drinking and I'm sat there with lemonade feeling like a fat cow with swollen ankles....my mum always said you don't need to get drunk to have a good time, well I clearly always missed that part!

Bali really?! I'd be the same, and like you i'm having my first at 34 and have travelled, partied extensively but I miss it sooo much....I always thought after 13 years being an air hostie i'd love the break I'm currently having, but I'm missing just galavanting off for a few days, life seems boring and not the same.....I am going back flying after maternity leave part time (2-3 flights per month) so I guess I will be able to have some me time then!!! Sorry for moaning. And it pisses me off so much when DP opens a bottle of Malbec or Shiraz I literally want to smash if over his head! Lol

Flyer747 · 30/05/2013 17:51

However I must stop moaning and take stock of how lucky I am to be pregnant, there are plenty of women/couples who struggle to get pregnant and wouldn't moan about trivial things, I must remember this when I moan!!

Shirehobbit · 30/05/2013 18:06

I am so glad I'm not alone in the frustrations, ladies Grin

We have actually reached a compromise - he won't stay over/out tomorrow night, so we stand a chance of being productive during Saturday, rather than him being hungover and incapacitated Hmm
I wouldn't normally have kicked off, but the same group of friends are all together next weekend for a wedding (which I'm not going to - initially was going to have to work, don't now, but not bothered about missing out as they're his friends, not mine) so they have plenty of buddy/drinking time then!

I turned 35 a week or so ago, so too have lived life to the full before having children. But it doesn't stop me being apprehensive about what life is going to be like, and mourning the passing of what has been.

(Oh, and a bottle of Prosecco would be awesome right now Wink )

OrangeBlossom2 · 30/05/2013 18:29

I think I overdid the walking, carrying and rushing around today getting lots of jobs done. Tummy a bit achey. Not anything really bad, but taking as a sign it is time to sit down and rest for the rest of the evening.

Looking at buggies on the iPad. Bugaboo are bringing out a new all terrain buggy called the buffalo in September which looks like the chameleon but is one piece foldable and has four big wheels instd of two. It is heavier though.

Smitten1981 · 30/05/2013 18:37

The Buffalo looks huge, maybe it's just the front wheels! I heard they were bringing out one called a Cheetah too, but possibly not in time for October.

Smitten1981 · 30/05/2013 18:42

Hmmm, apparently it's to be priced at £859, which isn't much more than the Cameleon and it has a bigger basket and can accommodate older kids too. Might have to throw this one into the mix as well, DH is still vying for the Stokke Crusi, but I've put my foot down on that one.

OrangeBlossom2 · 30/05/2013 18:42

Same width as the chameleon, 60cm, but does look chunkier in the picture. www.bugaboo.com/31
