Baby Whisperer worked for us. Amazing. It's common sense and just made me feel as if there was a tiny bit of structure to our day. DS slept through by 8 weeks, and has done ever since (infact I think he's 17 months going on 17 years!). God help us if the new baby doesn't like sleep - even our dog lets us have a lie in at the weekends.

I think for the first few weeks it's just survival mode and feed constantly, but after about a month I started to give him all his naps in his cot if possible, bright and noisy daytime and dark and clam night time, and eventually got to know his cues for being tired/hungry etc.

I'm looking forward to learning all over again with no.2 - that's the amazing this, no two babies are the same.

Scanning tomorrow lunchtime - got friends with babies from NCT coming round in the morning for tea and cake and to take my mind off things. Just hoping all is ok. Will check in again tomorrow x

GTbaby · 30/05/2013 23:37

Hayley and mrsO. Same concerns about expressing.
I thought if you fed on demand then supply is steady? So if LO stops waking for feeds should you really wake them? I thought supply adjusts to demand? Although I have read that you make more milk at night.
However I think GF promotes expressing after a feed so you are taking the extra milk left over. Also introduce a bottle early as some ppl do struggle later or. In torn about what ill do. As I really want to bf this time and don't want to mess things up.

As I've said before. Lots of research for bf is important as after babies are here it's difficult to find time. And I found it hard reading "you should have done this, shouldn't have done that".

TheFalconsmistress · 30/05/2013 23:52

DH and i are resigned that the Bee is the best buggy for our needs and it fits in our old polo without removing bits. Anyone had one?

GTbaby · 31/05/2013 00:13

I hate it when my DH says "if I could have this baby I would, I would be pregnant if I could" NO YOU FUCKING WOULDN'T ! I can't get him to do laundry, clean bathrooms etc and he thinks he'd choose to have a baby given the choice. Fucking idiot.

textbook · 31/05/2013 08:46

GT I feel your pain - my dp is so unsympathetic about sickness/tiredness/spd, but if it was him he would have taken to his bed at about 5 weeks (and stayed there).

I'm (re)scanning today so please all send cooperative baby vibes at 11ish Grin

Good luck to other scanners - I'm sure there are a few of us today.

Natalieand · 31/05/2013 08:55

With u on that one GT even my dad commented the thee day 'your always tired' I said we'll dad I am half way through a pregnancy with a toddler as well his reply 'your only pregnant' my mum then stuck up for me and said 'you've never been pregnant so u wouldn't no how hard it is' lol

Lots of co-operative baby vibes your way text

I've got my niece this morning (same age as dd) ill see you on the other side if I survive

takingachance · 31/05/2013 09:34

I'm a bit divided on feeding this time round - with dd I was fortunate to be able to take 14 months off work, so we exclusively bf to 6 months, then extended bf to 4 years old. I have never used a bottle. I did find it quite tying though, being the only one who could feed - I could have expressed, but kind of never got round to it!! Oh and she couldn't really have formula as she was dairy intolerant until age 2, so probably another reason I stuck with bf for so long.

This time round will be v different. I work for a different employer and can only afford to be off until about 5 months. Then my work involves night shifts, so this baby will have to be comfortably bottle fed by me and dh by the 5 month point...

So, I think I will start with bf, but then not sure whether to introduce a bottle straight away for some feeds or just bf until about 3 months then try and change over to bottle... Any advice from anyone who has done this way before gratefully accepted Smile

Good luck to all the scanners today!! xx

Shootingstarsandcomets · 31/05/2013 09:54

Gf didnt work for us, actually found her book really annoying- she tells you when to have breakfast, bossy boots!!! Ds sleeps 7-7 normally without me doing too much sleep training although we are currently in sleep hell due to being on holiday. If anyone has any tips on getting him back into his cot and sleeping through can you pm me please!!
How gorgeous is it today, garden all day for us I think.
Oh and I know some friends who went to oz with a 12 week old- they were exhausted but said it was ok, they were there for 3 months though so had time to get over the exhaustion. Ds was a dream on our 2.5 hr flight last week. Fed during take off and landing to stop his ears blocking and slept the rest of the way.

Natalieand · 31/05/2013 10:12

Bit off topic, and possibly getting a bit ahead of myself but I just wondered what ppl r doing for pain relief in labour? Last time I got to 4cm with nothing then had an epidural I had asked for gas and air but wasn't allowed it until 4cm and by then I had been awake for 27 hours and was knacered so had an epidural I feel like if I had been given gas and air I could have lasted alot longer without an epidural so this time I'm hoping not to have an epidural so madly I can fully experience labour but just wondered if anyone ever hired a tens machine and did u find them very usefull? Just wanna explore all options

claphammama · 31/05/2013 10:22

where are you shooting...??? So grey in London today... dreading another rubbish weekend. Definitely not the garden weather so far

More arguments with DP about what to do with our remaining pre-baby weekends and number / timing of people who want to visit and stay overnight. I am getting sick and tired of it... I know I'm being anti-social but I just need peace and quiet right now... I think he wants some solid and logical reasons from me why I don't want people around. But there are no solid and logical reasons. I just want peace and quiet , be able to laze around in my pijama until midday on Sunday, go for a walk in the park if I fancy it and watch TV on Saturday night. I know these days are going to be over soon and we have only 5 weekends free to ourselves until the birth...

takingachance · 31/05/2013 10:25

Natalie I can't advise on the Tens machine, but would be interested to hear other peoples experiences. I asked for an epidural with dd, but the anaesthetist was busy, so they gave me a shot of pethidine - what I can say is that pethidine is Useless! It just made me spaced out (but still feeling the pain) and dd was so tired she didn't feed for over 12 hours and then consequently (I think) got jaundice.

Natalieand · 31/05/2013 10:38

taking the care in my area means u get the same midwife for all your ante natal appts and then they attend the birth also but in my case cos my labour was so long and she is only legally allowed to do a 12 hour shift at one time I was already having the epidural when she arrived at the hospital and I said to Her at my 18 week appt that I wasn't allowed gas and air and this time I'm hoping to avoid the epidural she was shocked to hear they hadn't allowed me had and air prior to asking for the epidural so I think this time I will really push for the gas and air and hold out as long as possible without an epidural hopefully avoiding it all together that's why I thought id see what pols experiences of tens were cos they r quite cheap to hire aren't they?

OrangeBlossom2 · 31/05/2013 10:38

Clapham we don't have many weekends free either, though not always both days of the weekend out, I started panicking last night that we wouldn't have enough time to buy everything we need and would end up rushing and buying the wrong things. Had to calm down and remember I will have some time in the summer holidays and can always do it alone if necessary for things DH probably won't be interested in anyway like which Muslins or breast pads to get.

I think I have been getting Braxton hicks the last couple of days. Very weird, hard feeling.

My sister, bil and niece get the keys to their new house today and move out tomorrow! Will be so nice to have the place to ourselves again after nearly a month of sharing (well after the in laws this weekend). Itching to start getting everything ready, is this very early nesting? Got another decorator coming round to give a quote today, ranged from £370 to £800 to paint two bedrooms so far Shock might prompt DH into doing it himself after all. Got another man coming to fix four floorboards for a more reasonable £60 on Monday then we can finally get the carpets we ordered a month ago fitted and I will be happy.

I have spent the morning clearing all my clothes that no longer fit into vacuum bags. I love sucking the air out and watching it all shrivel up! (Simple things...)

OrangeBlossom2 · 31/05/2013 10:41

Natalie yes I think my sister hired a tens machine for about £20-£30ish although you can't use it in the pool and she didn't find it very effective. Might have been something to do with the baby being back to back.

claphammama · 31/05/2013 10:56

you are so lucky to have the long school holidays to catch up on everything orange!

PM me if you want / need any recommendations for decorators. Only saying as I know someone amazing and he lives in Carshalton so near you. Took me years to find him, having gone through several houses and several different decorators! He is not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. He is a perfectionist and very reliable - if he says he will come at 8am, he comes at 8am, he will clean after himself and does amazing work. He just did our nursery (old Victorian house with lots of cracked walls) - you can't see one crack now... like brand new plaster. He is coming to do our bedroom too in a couple of weeks.

Natalieand · 31/05/2013 10:57

Thanks orange I can't have a water birth anyway I'm too over weight xxx

takingachance · 31/05/2013 10:59

I can't have a water birth either as there is no birthing pool at the hospital here!!!

GTbaby · 31/05/2013 11:12

Forgot to say. I did a 10hour flight with LO when he was 5months. Not as bad as I expected.
But it depends on the baby. LO slept most the journey. Wish I'd been bf ing tho. As sorting out best method of feeding was the hardest part.

OrangeBlossom2 · 31/05/2013 11:29

Oh yes sorry Natalie you did mention that before. I lose track! You can't use tens in the bath or shower etc then. I think I will probably rent or borrow one though, it is one of the things that doesn't seem to affect the baby or slow your labour so worth a try.

Thanks clapham, have messaged you.

Yes the holidays are definitely one of the perks of the job. Because DH can't take all of them off to share with me it is always a good time to do jobs that I don't get round to in term time. And this year I won't need to be in school for any of it preparing my new classroom or planning as I will be going on maternity leave afterwards. I can't wait to set up an out of office email message!

roofio87 · 31/05/2013 11:30

I'm not having a water birth, just doesn't appeal to me. I'm hoping for just gas and air, but seeing as I've not been through it before I can't say that for definite!! I've got a high pain threshold and been through a lot physically so I'm fairly confident I'll be ok (anyone please feel free to point this comment out to me afterwards and I'll probably laugh!!) Grin

Natalieand · 31/05/2013 11:46

Lol I'm the same orange I remember things ppl have said and situations they have been in or their circumstances but can't ever remember what corresponds with which person lol

roofio water birth doesn't particularly appeal to me either I got in the bath when I was in labour with dd and it stopped my contractions (obviously that isn't the Case for everyone) I probly just like the idea of it cos I no I can't have it lol

How's is everyone getting on with buying things for baby? Much left too buy yet etc? It feels like everything is going so quickly and that before we no it our babies will be here!!!

OrangeBlossom2 · 31/05/2013 11:49

We haven't got a thing yet :( my only pregnancy related purchases are my pillow and a seatbelt adaptor, both for me!

Shootingstarsandcomets · 31/05/2013 12:43

I don't want a water birth either. Think I want to try a vbac though rather than a cs again. Although my friend had a baby yesterday and ended up with a cs again Sad.
I've got all stuff from ds apart from furniture and we need a carpet in the new nursery so i can't buy much but I did order the fabric for the blind for his/her nursery so that's exciting!
We're in the Peak District clapham its been raining all week so its nice to have some sun for a change! I thought it was meant to be nice all over though- sorry!

pinkbuttons · 31/05/2013 12:56

273 messages in 3 days! wow you ladies can chat Grin

Havent fully caught up but wanted to say natalie Im planning on using TENS again. used it breifly last time when Id got to hospital but is apparently much more effective if you use it as early as possible and can gradually increase the intensity. I picked up a leaflet from tesco the other day is really quite cheap and you keep it for four weeks over due date.
Hoping to be able to get into birthing pool after that stops working but we shall see. I had an epidural last time at 8cm after 45 hrs no sleep. Hoping labour is quicker this time and Ill be able to cope without.

Still not bought anything for our baby yet, I thought Id be really excited to buy girly clothes but so far havent had chance.

Hope baby is more co operative today textbook Smile

TheFalconsmistress · 31/05/2013 13:08

Have to say the water was a god send for me take so much of the pain away, however not an option with my blood loss this time :/

Doc prescribed me citalopram no idea why not the safest!
