Just wanted to add my own experience of birth for all the first-timers who are worried.
As I was having twins, I must admit that I was very carefully monitored but everyone always assumes I had a Caesarean which was not the case!
I was advised very early on in my pregnancy to have an epidural as the consultant so kindly put it, "once the first one is out, the second one can turn as it has a lot of space, and the doctor might have to get his hand in and pull it out by the leg". Nice. As I said to the consultant, you dont have to persuade me to have an epidural!
Anyway I had to be induced so had my waters broken and then on a drip. The anaesthetist put in the epidural but would not start the actual epidural fluid until I had experienced some contractions - once I had had about an hour of them they started to let me have the pain relief!!
It took another 8 hours before I was fully dilated and then I pushed for an hour - I can honestly say that that was the hardest work I have ever done, but not painful because of the epidural. I could feel the contractions around my middle but no sensation at all in the bits andpieces so no ring of fire!
In the end they had to use the ventouse as I had been pushing for over an hour and the first twin was not "turning the corner" so to speak. The first thing I said when it was all over was "oh, I would do that again".
I may say differently in Nov - am a bit scared myself as second babies (or third in this case) come quicker!!! Am worried I wont have time for an epidural!
