Evening - how amazing is it to be sitting in the garden at this time of night typing this? Hope this sunny spell lasts until we are all to big to cope with the heat!!

Bethbe welcome - hope all is well with you.

HM what an amazing holiday - glad you had a wonderful time.

NJ - good luck to you and your theory. Even when I was doing my midwifery training and listening to loads of babies with the pinard/doppler I couldn't tell a pink one from a blue one.

Saralou sorry to hear you are so sore - hope the physio can help. I saw an osteopath a couple of times which really helped my symphsis pubis pain during my second pg - not the same I know but may be worth considering. I've got a really niggley hip and was thinking of going to see him again soon.

Got the mw coming on friday sometime to do my homebirth booking so looking forward to hearing smidge (either galloping or chugging - I'll let you know NJ).

Hugs to you all.

Had my midwife appointment yesterday and heard the baby's heartbeat which was wonderful to hear and put me at ease. But I was in such a rush to get to the appt that I completely forgot my urine sample and forgot to ask about the triple test. I suppose I didn't have it done with previous pg and since all my other blood tests were fine there isn't a need. Every question that I had in my head completely left my brain when I saw the midwife. I'm getting baby brain already!

Welcome to Bethbe!

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 08:44

LOL CattyB, I have been watching the birth programs on Sky and if they show the lady in an ante-natel appointment before I always try and work out if the heart beat sounds like trains or horses! I think I should get out more...Blush :o Must admit though, the ones that I have clocked, most of the time are correct!

Well I woke up this morning with a visitor in my bathroom, it had 8 legs and was the size of Spain, maybe even a bit bigger Wink, switched the shower on to try and drown it (I know I am a horrible person) and it looked at me and said in a gruff voice "is that all you got?" so I had to get a broom and knock it into the bath where it is still running around, can spiders really not get out of a bath??? I don't fancy coming face to face with it again, will take me all morning to gather up the courage to go up and have a wee - which I need already!!

Anyway, lovely sunny day again, will get DS off to nursery come home and get the laptop in the garden with my fruit juice and shop from the comfort of my lounger!! :o Cant wait...!!

Take care everyone :)

mygirllolipop · 08/06/2006 09:13

Wish I had a lap top so I could sit outside doing MN!

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 09:18

It is lovely as well MyGirl!! :o There is a bit of a breeze today so it isn't so stiffling, and I can here the birds singing away in the trees, and the odd aeroplane going over, ahhhh bliss!! :o

HopingCat · 08/06/2006 09:31

I've not heard about the galloping/chugging theory, but I do know that girls heartbeats are faster. Apparently 140 beats per min or above is a girl. However when I heard my baby's heartbeat it fluctuated around 138-142. It clearly does not want me to know if it's a boy or girl!

Esmummy · 08/06/2006 09:34

I'd heard that too Hopingcat and for me it was true. My midwife told me all the way through that I was having a girl becuase of the heartbeat and I do, DD's always sat at around 150ish when i went on Tuesday this one is much much slower (noticable even to listen to) and midwife said it was 135.
Wonder if that means we are in for a boy this time ?

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 09:42

Well I suppose that fits the theory, the sounds of a horse galloping is faster than that of a train on the tracks, I know it depends on how fast the train is going, but I am thinking with it being an old wives tale that it was based on a steam train not an intercity 6000 (or whatever!!!) LOL

velcrobott · 08/06/2006 09:59

NJ - it's a well know theory but it by NO MEANS full proof. It was true for my kids but I have known it to be wrong several times and there are threads on MN about it too Smile

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 10:14

I think all of the old wives tales about working out the sex should only be taken with a pinch of salt though VB, like dangling a pendant over the bump and seeing which way it moves, the more sick you feel the more likely it is to be a girl etc. I would never go and buy all blue for the sake of a slower heart beat and no morning sickness!! I guess it is just a bit of fun along the way really!!

HopingCat · 08/06/2006 11:45

I've been having a go at some gender prediction quizes on the internet. It's a good laugh. I really do not want to know the sex of my baby, so would never ask at the scan, but I like trying to guess myself. Has anyone had a go at this one?

\link{http://www.babygenderprediction.com/old-wives-tales/index.phtml\quiz}

Let me know what results you get.

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 11:59

Well I could only guess at the heart rate question because I don't know so I put less than 139bpm, but I got 53% for a girl, so I think that means I am about 50% likely to have a boy, and 50% likely to have a girl...

Glad I got that straight in my head!!!! Wink

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 11:59

How about you HC, what did it come with for you?

saralou100 · 08/06/2006 12:02

how funny hc, took the test just now...... results were..... 47% boy - 53% girl!!! so that was no help at all!! :o

all these old wives tales were true for me when i had ds, slow heart beat, bump all out front etc, my sister however disproved every theory out there (awkward moo that she is!) we were so convinced she was having a girl, i asked the midwife to double check when he came out with bits!! :o

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 12:08

LOL Saralou, there is always one that has to be different, isn't there?!

Strange how our results came back exactly the same!!!

Bethbe · 08/06/2006 13:15

Hello again!

This will be my first and I'm now 16+4. I'm the first of my generation in my family and out of my friends, so I don't have a lot of guidance and I've been a little green and made lots of mistakes already. I'll be blowed if I can figure out the midwife set up where I live!

I heard the heartbeat yesterday, but couldn't help laughing all the way through it because the midwife (she was mad by the way) spent about 5 minutes chasing it around my tummy!

Hope you all get some time to enjoy the sun - and thanls for being so welcoming!

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 13:25

Bethbe, I was pretty much in the same situation as you with my first, now you have found MN you will never be lost for an answer, but what they say about 'mother's instinct' is absolutely true, just follow what you think is right, and it probably will be!

I am sure you will do a great job :o

Hattie05 · 08/06/2006 13:57

Gosh, i have been away so long there is an entire new thread!!

Back from hols now, been to see midwife this morning who i'm not keen on, but at least i heard the heart beat and thats all that matters.

Hope the rest of you are all well!

HopingCat · 08/06/2006 14:01

I have done the gender prediction quiz twice on different days, and I thought I'd answered the same both times. However, I got 53% girl on the first one, but 60% boy on the second. I must have changed one answer. How on earth the strength of your nails can be used to tell if you're having a boy or girl I just don't know!

For those of you who like these quizzes, try this labour prediction one.

\link{http://www.justmommies.com/quizzes/labor_prediction_quiz.php\labourquiz}

There is also another gender prediction quiz on this same site, which tells me I have 67% chance of having a boy, and quite a good pregnancy calendar which I have been using for a few months now.

Bethbe · 08/06/2006 14:04

Thanks NatalieJane, I'm going to try my best anyway.
I forgot to say that my EED from the scan is November 19th, but my family history, my cycle and the pure fact that I'm always late for everything makes me think it will be more like early Dec (if that will be allowed).

Fatbetty, I was told that you can have the triple test up to 19 weeks. I'm not sure about all this stats stuff myself, but if you think you still might want to know, I'm sure they'd give it to you.

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 14:06

WB Hattie, glad you had a good time! :)

HC, I have always been a nail biter, have never been able to kick the habit because when I stop biting them, they just peel apart, but when I was pregnant with DS my nails, and my hair for that matter, got so much stronger and longer, by the time I gave birth for the first time in my life I had beautiful natural manicured nails, 3 weeks after I had him I was back to biting them because they just started peeling again! This time they seem to be even softer and are peeling even though they are short!

MeAndMyBoy · 08/06/2006 14:49

Well I got 60 40 for a boy :) But feel different this time to last so my intuition is saying girl.

Hope you're all getting some of the sun and not feeling too yuck still

H x

MeAndMyBoy · 08/06/2006 14:51

Well this is my labour prediction - sounds fairly close to last time though lol

We predict your baby will be born 3-7 days before its due date. Your baby will most likely be born in the morning. We predict that your baby will weigh approximately 7.2 pounds and that your labor will be about 10 hours long.

Tinasan · 08/06/2006 17:02

Hi all,
I'm looking for some advice here - one of my closest friends was due on Christmad Day, she went along for her 12 week scan today and the baby died at 7 weeks. She texted me to let me know but said she can't talk right now. I'm really gutted for her but I don't know if there's anything I can do to make her feel better - she may not want to handle a pregnant friend around at the moment? I've texted back of course and am going to send a card but do you think there is anything else I can do?

Thanks for any advice
Tinasan

NatalieJane · 08/06/2006 17:16

Tinasan, firstly obviously really sorry to hear this and my thoughts are with your friend.

Two of my sisters have been through M/C's one of them wanted everyone around and wanted to be 'looked after' for a while, the other just wanted to get on with things, and get over it in her own way. I would say do as you are, reply and send a card, maybe suggest planting a tree or rose bush or something, but just take your cues from her really. May even help if you are utterly honest with her and ask her what she want's you to do, and be prepared for her to change her mind again!
