I'm interested in real nappies lunavix, but I live in a flat without a garden, and don't have a tumble dryer, so am worried about practicalities?

lunavix · 02/05/2006 09:07

I'd say if you are organised (or at least plan to be!) you could go for it.... if you got enough to last say 3 days, and did a wash then, you'd cope well as long as you had the one space to dry them - such as one of the clothes airer type things. Quicker drying nappies would definately be for you - totsbots, kissaluvs, or even prefolds depending on budget/how cute you want them to be :)

We started ds on tots in a flat, and coped. Tbh while a dryer is handy, and a quick dry in one every now and then helps them become soft again, we didn't have one and I wouldn't use one every wash anyways.

katzg · 02/05/2006 10:51

hi just crashing to see if Purpleturtle's physio appointment went well and to direct her to this thread \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1368&threadid=168962&stamp=060502104641#3532575\Sheffield Zooby's meet}

Nbg · 02/05/2006 12:48

I'm quite interested in reusables. I'm having a real problem convincing dh though. I sent a questionaire of to the nappylady over a week ago but haven't heard anything back yet.
I am quite taken with the idea of them but wonder how ticked off I'll get with all the cleaning.

Hope everyone is well Smile

lunavix · 02/05/2006 13:46

Nbg - tbh the only thing that swayed dh about reusuables was saving so much money...

if anyone wants any more information you can email me at dark willow girl @ yahoo . co. uk

I hope this isn't seen as me promoting business lol as I can only really offer advice atm as we haven't set anything up!

I'm definately going to be the size of a house. I've found out squash, fruit juice, and fruit all give me terrible indigestion (they did last time too but as I was eating solely fruit I never noticed.) So dh went out for emergency fizzy drink and chocolate supplies.. Grin

PinkTulips · 02/05/2006 15:09

arabica, you can definitely manage washables in a flat, we have been! the main thing is to make sure you have enough to cover the day they'll be drying ie; if you plan to put a nappy wash on every 2 days, buy enough for 3 days. also expect it to take a week or 2 to get into the routine of washing and drying them so have a pack of disposables handy to cover the days you get it wrong while your getting the hang of it. once you get into the swing of it it's alot less hassle chucking a wash on than trawling out to the shops to buy nappies IMO.

Nbg · 02/05/2006 15:15

I've tried to sway him on the money saving side but to my suprise it hasn't changed his mind.
He's trying to convince me that I'll never have the washing up to date and the house will stink of dirty nappies.

PinkTulips · 02/05/2006 15:23

trust me the disposables smell way worse! something to do with the way those chemicals they use react with pee i think as when i have dd in them down at dps parents i'm often convinced shes done a poo it smells so horrible and rush to change her to find the nappy is barely wet.

olivo · 02/05/2006 15:50

hello! we're hoping to do a combination of disposables and real ones - dh's friend is an environmental officer and has extolled the virtues of the washables so he is really up for it!but I guess it won't be him doing the washing Grin

I've decided that chunky kit kats are the only way forward - so I'm going to be the size of at least 2 houses.....

Nbg · 02/05/2006 15:54

I've got a real thing for crunching stuff atm. I fund myself gnawing on my toothbrush the other night like a teething baby.

I've also been munching away at ice pops. I've filled the freezer with them.

BigHotMama · 02/05/2006 18:31

Hi everyone, hope your all feeling ok!

I'm definately going to give re-useables a bash after all the positive vibes on here, already got plenty of supplies of disposables too so can decide which one is best for me!

As for food, I'm into my sweet things like mars ice creams, dairy milk, boosts (dumptruck size for me lol!). Also cant stop drinking milk and last week I found myself munching on raw yellow chopped peppers at a party buffet, crunchy and juicy yum yum.

Only 11 days until our 4d scan, so excited!

Feeling huge and ready to burst now...am officially 6 months pg...wow! Grin

BigHotMama · 02/05/2006 18:33

Ooops forgot to say Hi and welcome to HELLY72, hope you get something sorted out for your NCT classes.

purpleturtle · 02/05/2006 19:07

Back from a weekend in Glasgow, which wasn't as bad as it could have been. Grin

Saw the physio on Friday. She just listened to me describe my various aches and pains, then gave me the same back exercise leaflet I've seen before and showed me a couple of exercises. She also gave me a very attractive elastic and velcro contraption, which does seem to be doing some good. I have to leave plenty of time to get to the loo though, cos it takes 5 minutes to get to my knickers! lol

At least I feel reassured that I'm not doing permanent damage to my back, and I have felt better over the last few days, despite spending hours driving.

Completely off topic - I know there are a couple of Sheffielders on this thread - see katz's post a bit lower down for the link to the meet-up thread.

Arabica · 02/05/2006 19:51

Thanks for the advice! Am really pleased it's possible to manage reusables in a flat with no tumble dryer. I'll investigate the brands you've suggested--when I feel confident enough to start thinking about shopping!

lunavix · 02/05/2006 20:21

Arabica - I'm glad :) Our main two brands we're stocking will be bumbles and tots... I forgot to mention bumbles, they dry even quicker than tots! It's definately worth a go, and they're just so nice.

NBG - If you get a tight fitting nappy bin, you won't smell a thing. We had one of those sangenic things for disposables when we first had ds and the smell was just urgh. But with reusables you flush the poo... so they smell wayyyy less!

I want to eat some strawberries.. but I'm so scared of the heartburn Sad

Very jealous of your scan BHM, dh says we can't afford one (which tbh is true but SO not the point!)

olivo - I just eat anything. Anything!

Nbg · 02/05/2006 20:24

So in a realistic world Luna, how much would you think of paying initially without leaving yourself short IYSWIM?
If I did do it, I'd want to do it properly and get everything needed and buy a proper supply.

pucca · 02/05/2006 20:52

Well i ended up on the maternity ward last night...sigh.

Had quite bad period type pains all afternoon yesterday so went in to be monitored and my temp and pulse was high so they kept me in, took bloods, swabs of cervix and urine sample, the bloods came back as i have a infection somewhere but have to wait for other results, they were talking about premature labour etc which was very scary but all well now i hope. Smile

Also saw consultant and they want to do a elective c-section because of risks of incontenence if i tear so bad again (3rd degree tear) but won't find out my date till i am 36 weeks, but have said they will do it at 39 weeks.

Hope everyone well?

Smile
Nbg · 02/05/2006 21:05

Oh gosh Pucca!
Did they say what they think it might be? How long do you have to wait?

I had a similar thing with dd. Ended up on labour ward. Took samples, talk of premature labour but everything settled down and was fine.

Hope it's all ok Smile

2labs · 02/05/2006 21:55

Hello, I'm due in August too... only just noticed these threads! It's my first, supposed to be 15th August, don't know the sex.

I'm interested in reusable nappies too, but how on earth do you choose which ones? Presumably they all fit slightly differently and you don't know which will be best/least leaky without trying them on your baby first? Or is there not much difference between them?

purpleturtle · 02/05/2006 22:02

There's a whole world of reusable nappies out there. All with their own pros and cons. As it's your first, why you don't you start out with disposables, while you work out which way up the baby goes Wink and have a good look round at what other mums at groups are using, check out \link{http://www.thenappylady.co.uk\the nappy lady}, and try out one or two different kinds. You can get nappies second hand reasonably cheaply from ebay, and once you know what you want you can spend a bit more.

I didn't start with resuables with my first till she was one, but I still think it was worth it. And then I got to reuse the nappies with ds.

PinkTulips · 02/05/2006 22:08

pucca, how horrible. you must be shaking after a fright like that. is it a water infection or a bug you picked up? big hugs pet and hope things settle down for you {{{hug}}}

Arabica · 03/05/2006 00:57

Pucca! So glad you're OK now. How scary.
I have a scan at the Fetal Medicine Unit later today, bit anxious, so am not at all sleepy.

pucca · 03/05/2006 08:43

Not sure will just have to wait for the results which they said will take 3 - 4 days.

Good luck with your scan today Arabica. Hope all goes ok.

xx

olivo · 03/05/2006 10:00

Pucca - sorry to hear you've had such a scare - hope you are feeling a bit better now.

Arabica - wish i'd known someone else was up at 1am, I'd have come on-line! hope your scan goes well, let us know.
