Do you all think that baby how-to books for the first year are good or more trouble than they are worth? And do you know any good ones? Birth & Beyond by Yehudi Gordon has been our bible and that has a lot of baby care in it but I was just wondering if there were any other really good ones.

Nbg · 09/05/2006 00:04

I think you'll get quite alot from the baby books.
When I went to ante natal classes I felt I knew everything Grin

I can highly recommend the Best friends guide to pregnancy by Vicky Iovine. It will give you some info but more than anything it's a great read. Totally hilarious. I literally wet myself reading it.
She did another one about toddlers I think. I must read it.

Other than that I can also recommend the Discovery Health channel Grin

kitegirl · 09/05/2006 02:20

I also think the baby books were very useful! Get Annabel Carmel's First Year Planner, although I can't stand her it's a good book for practicalities and it has lots of pictures.. Smile

we are going for Milo at the moment.

should go to bed... we've had a bit of a shock today, ds (26 months) saw a paediatric consultant today for a developmental assessment because of his speech delay and she is suspecting Autistic Spectrum Disorder. He is going to have some genetic tests for chromosome abnormalities, and there is a small chance Milo has it too if something is found. Sad

But, I have an appointment with an ob consultant on wednesday, hooray! A friend had a baby this morning after a gruelling 48 hour labour... yikes.... and she did everything by the book. Yoga, rasberry leaf tea, active birth in the plan... all out of the window. just comes to show... Smile

Salamander · 09/05/2006 08:41

Hi All! Good Morning!!
It's twenty to nine and i'm just going over things here before getting some work done!

Firstly, Kitegirl - good luck with the testing for your little boy.

A few comments:

Pucca - George Alexander is an excellent name!!

Nbg - glad your other half was great with the pregnancy last time - hope he continues in that vein this time too

Bobly - Welcome and the best advice I can give you is to get your other half to do as much for you as humanly possible - you are doing an amazing thing, so you deserve all the help you can get!

Suggestion - the list of everyone on here is getting gigantic, and not wanting to cause a nightmare, but maybe it would be a good idea to add baby names to it where availble... ?!

Speak to you later,

Salamander (16 loo roll squares...)

hoppybird · 09/05/2006 09:33

eeny, yes, moving during pregnancy is not a fantastic idea. With my first pregnancy, we really HAD to find somewhere, as my dh-to-be and I we were living in separate rented tiny studio flats, and we wanted to buy somewhere. We ended up moving in with 6 weeks to spare before the baby would arrive. Thought we had time to settle in - wrong! DS came along a week after we moved in! I'm certain the stress had a lot to do with it.

Nbg - I like the sound of the Best Friend's guide to pregnancy - I love anything hilarious! The only thing I read first time was Emma's Diary (from the midwife) and later on Toddler Taming, which worked for me - completely no-nonsense and also very amusing.

I didn't go to any classes last time, and I'm not sure how much value they'd be for a second one (apart from meeting other mummies-to-be) - any opinions on this?

Nbg · 09/05/2006 09:37

Kg Sad
I'm going to email you sweetie.

olivo · 09/05/2006 11:08

kitegirl - sorry to hear that, good luck with the testing.
nbg - my sister has bought me the best friends guide to survivng the first year - might borrow the preg one from my friend if you recommend it

well, my bank holiday relaxing day off has gone down the pan - dh spent a few hours in A and E last night with a torn knee ligament so i am now running round after him while he watches tv. i guess its better it happened now than later though!! fortunately I'm not feeling as rough as i did yesterday.

pucca - i really like the name george - its on our list too!

eenywifemum · 09/05/2006 12:26

Hi! Thanks for the book recomendations! I thought I wanted to get one but there are so many to choose from it can be a little hit and miss!

kitegirl, I'm sorry. That must be so upseting for you. When do you find out for sure about DS and Milo? Good luck.

I havent even been to one lot of antenatal classes yet, so I dont know how useful they would be 2nd time around, but I think if we had another baby then I would probably go to the classes again, just because I could! I wouldnt pay for them but maybe it depends on how old your first child is, to see how much of a refresher you might need?

BigHotMama · 09/05/2006 12:39

Phew! Its just taken me half hour to catch up, how busy have you lot been?
I've had to write things down to try and remember who said what ha ha! Whats the world coming to eh? Grin

Well morning all and welcome to Bobley & Burstinbug!

KG Hope everything goes ok with the tests, thinking of you!

PSML at Salamander 16 loo sheets! I must measure my Dh tonight ha! I'm 10 sheets at 27 weeks so on par with you NBG! Pucca, your the biggest bump on ere so far then? Eeny your teenyweeny at 6 sheets! (ooh thats rhymes!)
Wonder how Preparingfor2 is measuring up? We've not heard from her in a while...and she's having twins! Hope she is ok.
2Labs, sorry to hear your having some skin issues, its the hormone changes hun! Hope it clears up soon for you! My nails are looking fab too, normally have extensions and bite them till they bleed but have had extensions off for few months as wanted to try and grow them and they are looking lovely now, DH finds them even sexier.
Talking about kicks, few weeks ago I was getting mainly bladder kicks but now they come at every angle, sides, top and bladder. Nearly every time I touch my bump I get a kick, definately having 30+kicks a day is this normal? Get loads when I go to bed but loads in the morning, at work, when I eat/drink, when I sneeze. I did have a bit of a paranoia last Friday when I didnt feel anything for about 3-4 hours, my sister rubbed her hands together and said she would use her healing powers (LOL) and placed her hot hands on top of my bump and I instantly got a massive kick to the groin which made me jump n yell!

Eeny, Its my first baby too so am constantly reading the Birth & Beyond book, also got the Pregnancy Bible. My Dh is soo excited and he really lets me put my feet up most nights while he does the chores/cooking. I think he'll be great at the birth and will be really emotional, he cried when we did our 1st test, the 12 week scan and I bet he'll cry at our 4d scan this wekend. Bless him!

Hoppy, I'm also in a 2 bed flat, not sure if we can decorate the nursery as its rented. Am ringing Skitts today to ask their permission to paint and will probably add some stickers as a border. Thinking of a nice bright lemon theme as not sure on the sex, hoping the babyshow will have some nice furnishings/ideas for the nursery.

Ohmygod, so sorry for ranting on but dont get chance to come on as often as I'd like as busy at work!

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow Arabica!

Hope everyone is well x Smile Wink

Micku5 · 09/05/2006 12:42

Hi.. good to see more new people joining the thread! Don't know how many sheets I am (am at work atm) but the last time i measured i was 9 sheets at 22 weeks.

I have another scan on thursday (i'll be 24 weeks) because they found that the baby's left kidney is slightly dilated, so they want to keep an eye on it.

Still don't know what sex the baby is.. it was being shy and had it's legs crossed but we have finally come up with names that we like. Alexander James for a boy and Talia for a girl.

Arabica · 09/05/2006 12:50

Kitegirl and Micku5, the best of vibes to you. I can recommend starting a thread about the tests/scans you are needing to have--I did this re my baby's potential brain problem and it's been extraordinarily supportive and helpful so far to hear from others who've been in similar circumstances. It can sometimes feel as though you are the only one in the world with pg worries, especially if (as in my case) all your RL friends have sailed through 40 wks with no concerns at all.
I just looked in my diary and got a nice surpriseages ago I booked a pedicure appt at the beauty salon and had forgotten all about it! So, off to be pampered this afternoonI certainly feel I deserve it. We all do!

eenywifemum · 09/05/2006 12:52

Hi Big Hot Mama! We rent as well but are good friends with our landlady (also our next door neighbour)so she didnt mind us painting. But having said that we agreed to repaint when we move out. Glad your DH is good too - it makes such a difference! Salamander has been a godsend with this pregnancy, I dont think I could have got through it without him! (Or gotten INTO it without him! Grin

I am actually 9 loo roll sheets, (at 23 weeks 4 days) when I said 6 i was doing it in a really absurd way! Salamander had to show me how as I seem to have lost all common sense! :)

I would LOVE to go to the baby show!! Where is it again? Probably too far from us but one can hope!

Micky5 i hope everything is alright with your baby. It seems more often than not scans pick up a problem and then it seems to correct itself somehow. Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Our Alexander wasnt shy about showing his bits at all!! he had his legs spread wide the first time (we had the anatomy scan in 4 bits because he was being difficult in all other areas!) and the 4th time he was bouncing up and down on his hands and knees!! i have never seen anything so funny!

melsy · 09/05/2006 13:09

awww Arabica , glad you have something for you to relax today, hope you can zone out some what.

Kitegirl Im sorry to hear your news , I hope you dont have to wait long for the results. I realise I havent emailed you back at all , but Im sure you have other worries , apart from my paintings hun. I havent done anything for 2months now.

NBG kindly started a thread for me so I could get some support as the previuos ptsd I suffered with dd is worrying me. Its under pregnancy with my name as heading, if anyone has had experiences similar I would appreciate talking with you.

BHM I like your idea of writindown all that you read ,its hard to keep a track with so many names.

Nbg · 09/05/2006 13:35

Eeny, the baby show is at the NEC in Birmingham. BigHotMama is going I think so she might be able to fill you in on specific details.

Would most certainly recommend the Vicky Iovine books, in fact I'm going to buy the other ones I think. I remember raeding mine when I worked whilst pg with dd. I had to take 4 trains a day so I needed something to keep me sane. Anyway one day I had read a really funny section and I actually lol on the train. I got the most weirdest looks but the book is so funny you can't keep it in!

Don't think I'll get the chance to come on tomorrow so all the best to Arabica and Micku5 for Thursday. I hope you both get some answers Smile

jayjaybaby · 09/05/2006 14:33

i was thinking of going to baby show but dont think its worth it as we have bought everything already

we have decided to call our lil girl charlie jayne

eenywifemum · 09/05/2006 15:11

I dont think I could make it all the way to the baby show as I am still being sick a lot and cant stand long car journeys! I'll be thinking of it in envy though! It would probably be too much of a temptation anyway!

jayjaybaby, I like your name a lot! And I love the sound of the Vicky Iovine books! Def. have to check those out!

Nbg · 09/05/2006 15:19

Gosh eeny, you poor thing suffering with sickness. It bad enough having it in the early days let alone this far on.

Is it bad all day or just as certain times?

I'm off to be naughty again and cut the grass. I can't stand seeing the garden look like a jungle.

olivo · 09/05/2006 15:48

I'm so impressed with everyone being organised with names and equipment and everything - note to self, must get more organised Blush!!

ah well, off to have abother Kit Kat (snack size Angry Grin .......

BigHotMama · 09/05/2006 15:51

Go have a look at www.thebabyshow.co.uk. Tickets are around £10 but if you take grandparent with ya they are £8. You can view all the different stores online and they are even doing 4d scans on the cheap as the place I'm booked in are doing them for £25 or something ridiculous! Its the weekend 19th-21st May and they still have tickets left or you can pay on the door.

Micku5, hope everything will be ok with your baba, fingers crossed for you hun! x

Melsy, read your other thread and cant believe what you went through chick? No wonder your starting to get anxious, hope you can get to speak to somebody about it and try not to worry as I'm sure your experience wouldnt repeat itself this time round. Wish I could help x

Eeny, does your landlady let you have Sky TV aswell? DH is driving me mad for it and I've agreed if Skitts allow us he can have it providing its not 24-hr footy, and plus I can have the baby channel on everyday all day while on mat leave wehey! Grin

BigHotMama · 09/05/2006 15:57

Lol Olivo and ur kitkat, do you know if you get the BigBro voucher inside your kitkat The Sun are willing to pay you for it! (not sure how much tho?) If anyone will get one it'll be you ha! Grin Its Boosts for me at the moment and Mars Ice cream for supper x

Oh had my first FREE dental check up with a very bloody polish n scrape, spat blood everywhere as my gums bleed everytime I brush them so when he got stuck in with the drill you can imagine the state of my mouth! Yuk!

lunavix · 09/05/2006 18:32

Hi everyone!

1st - I have both a sling and a baby carrier, and sling is definately a winner esp. for newborn. My baby carrier is a tomy safari I think, if you were interested I could post it to you for a trial? You can see how much you like carriers and then either get the mothercare one or you could buy ours... I used it for a while with ds but the sling is so much nicer.

I forgot all about the baby show will try and convince dh to take me!

I feel SOOOOOO guilty, I've been so self involved being pg that the person who's my closest friend locally just told me she was 13 weeks pg - and I hadn't even noticed! Feel soooooooo guilty!

My first nhs dentist apt this pg is tomorrow.. ARGH.

purpleturtle · 09/05/2006 18:32

Wow! You lot have been busy!

I don't have the patience to jot down even what I've just scanned through, so here is my contribution, with apologies if I get names wrong!

Olivo - ds is Noah. One of several we know, despite thinking it terribly unusual when we chose it! Grin Not as outlandish as your dh might think.

Nbg - I think you asked me something. Was it about the physio? I've been a lot better since I stopped sitting on my beloved settee. Squashy and comfy, yes. Supportive of my poor stretched ligaments, no! Am relegated to my Ikea Poang. Sad The back support helps too, I think.

Alexander is certainly a popular choice of name on this thread! My nephew is Alexander George - who was it going for George Alexander?

Oh and Sarahlouuk1 - I'm enjoying the ante-natal care at the Jessops in the form of complementary therapy (that's massage to most of us!), but have no intention of darkening its portal when in labour. My home waterbirth is going to go without a hitch. Are you going to give it a go? Apparently Jessops were sending women to Chesterfield at some point in March because they were full. That said, I don't think I know anyone it's actually happened to, and I feel like I know a lot of new mums!

olivo · 09/05/2006 18:35

oooh, will be on the lookout for them BHM Wink
wish i could have an obsession for something a bit more healthy - don't think Ribena ice lollies, my other little 'treat', really counts!!Grin

Bobley · 09/05/2006 20:05

Hi Everyone!

I am 9 sheets at 26+3 weeks so I think this sounds about right from reading all your postings!

I have put on nearly 2 stone though!! Started off at 8 stone 6 and now I am over 10 stone! Not sure if that is a good thing or not, obviously to may jam doughnuts!!! Smile

trix1 · 09/05/2006 20:45

Hello all, its a mission in itself to keep up with you all.

KG - good luck for the results.

BHM - did you say your 4d scan is £25.00? if so that is a great price - i think they are about £180.00 near me

Im 8 sheets of toilet roll and have gone from 8st 6lbs to nearly 10stone - I will struggle to lose it this time I jsut know it.
