I just wailed at DP 'I WANT A CAT NOWWWWWW' and he just said, don't you think we should have the baby first Grin

:(

TheDetective · 17/10/2012 22:30

Do you think this would be suitable for a wedding Confused

I can't find anything I like anywhere, and have a wedding next Friday. I've also got my birthday coming up, so wanted to kill 2 birds in one stone. Assuming I don't have the baby before of course!

YellowWellies · 17/10/2012 22:32

32 weekers look HUGE in the SCBU - don't worry Kissy he / she stands an amazing chance (I think 29 weekers have a 95% survival rate these days and 30 weeks is considered a huge milestone with even higher odds).

In terms of what to expect, it's likely the wee one could be in the special baby unit for anywhere from a fortnight to a month or maybe even two - it depends on birthweight and condition. Sometimes they are released when they hit a certain weight - usually about 4-5lbs, other times they are in their until their due date - but I am sure he/she will be fine in the end. Just make sure NO ONE who is even the slightest bit ill goes to visit them - as the biggest risk is infection. And make sure that Mum and Dad are Nazis over the alcohol handwash if there are visitors. The baby will probably have to have synergis jags to protect them from colds this winter as they can be serious for prems.

But seriously the SCBU is amazing and a 32 weeker won't be scary for the staff. I put up a blog post the other day from a guy who's 25 weeker just got home from the NICU - so honestly 32 weekers are considered as 'nearly cooked' rather than 'half done' by the unit staff. The baby might have some short term lung issues (as they're not quite finished), and be a bit jaundiced, and will look a bit skinny but all they have really missed in the womb is the last few weeks of putting on fat. It is much more traumatic for the Mums though - early birth can lead to post traumatic stress and visiting your baby in hospital (and going home without them) has got to be horrible. I'm sure your family will all rally round. Does she have any other kids? Sometimes the biggest help can be looking after the older kids so that the new Mum can be at the hospital.

Good luck and lots of love to your family xxxxx

Thankyou all so much, I am truly grateful for the virtual hand holding and support it really is helpful. Wish Id shared earlier now as it was a lot harder a few weeks ago, the amount of times I went to write the post but then just didnt for one reason or another Ive lost count.
Will ,ake full use now Ive spilled, so thankyou again. kissy your little niece/nephew should be just fine, keep us updated and sending lots of luck to your Bro and SIL and of course the little one.
Think I will feel much better once I have my baby boy to snuggle and keep me company at night, I saw a very apt little top in Tesco the other day with the slogan "Mummy's new man" I was very tempted I must say Grin

blonderthanred · 17/10/2012 22:33

Yy to the appetite question... I am having an extra meal a day at the moment. Just a few rice cakes or a sandwich but I have really noticed an increase in hunger in the last couple of weeks.

MM I'm glad you've spoken to your DH and he has stepped up a bit.

Shanelle I'm really sorry to hear about your partner. Just to say that happened to my mum when she was pg with me and although she had a tough time, I have grown up with such admiration for her strength and determination. She has worked so hard over the years, bringing me up and then my brother and sister from a subsequent marriage which also ended. So I just wanted to say that I know it is a difficult and horrible situation but your baby is going to grow up so proud of you and how dignified you have been in such difficult circumstances.

Chunkychicken · 17/10/2012 22:35

I think so Detective but then I got the purple dress with the pink bow from Next for a wedding a wk on Sat.

Shanelle sounds like you've been through a lot.

Have found out that its unlikely I'll be able to have a home water birth as the community midwives are not fully trained in water births. I'm going to check with my MW on Tues, but I feel I have to make a choice between home or water birth. It's a tricky choice. :(

Sorry if I missed other posts - skim reading before bed, am v tired.

YellowWellies · 17/10/2012 22:37

"Mummy's new man" I love it. You should get that shanelle Grin

Nice frock detective I reckon that's fine for a wedding (and very very pretty)

TheDetective · 17/10/2012 22:40

Chunky That has given me the rage! Midwives don't need special training for water birth! And if they think they do, they need to get it. Denying you your choice of birth isn't acceptable for this reason.

Seriously, there is no special skill to birth in the water! Scratches head It is easier for the midwife to be honest, as it is completely hands off, and mum reaches down for baby! The only absolute thing they need to know is that if the mum stands above water at any point that the babys head is out, then she must not go back in the water, once the head is out, the air stimulates breathing. There fore baby must be either fully submerged or not at all once the head is crowning.

But that isn't rocket science. There really isn't anything else to it!

TheDetective · 17/10/2012 22:41
for those who haven't seen it. I giggled for quite some time after!
TheDetective · 17/10/2012 22:42

Yay! I shall get it and hope you can't see my bra above the neckline then! I ended up in a black dress for the wedding I went to in July, with blue accessories. Why is it so hard to find something nice that isn't black?!

kissyfur · 17/10/2012 22:52

Thanks so much for your replies everyone esp YW and detective, bit less scared for them now. Fingers crossed baby will stay in there a bit longer.. Will keep you updated

TheDetective · 17/10/2012 22:54

Chunky That was the other dress I considered btw, I may still get both and try them on! I was planning on getting some purple tights to go with the black dress though, which swayed me more to that one Grin

Passmethecrisps · 17/10/2012 23:06

That frock is perfect I reckon detective. I have a wedding in a fortnight when I will be 39 weeks. I am going to be wearing a black frock I bought from New Look and wore to work. I am tarting it up with silver glittery pumps and a silver sequinned shrug both from Next. I would have been cheaper buying a new mat dress but I get new shoes and a cardie I can wear post baby. I feel bad fr spending money we don't have but I am just going to feel so self-conscious. Everyone there will be very chic and glam - lots of London living. I will be ready to pop and wearing and old frock.

TheDetective · 18/10/2012 00:25

Am now in bed feeling pissed off because DP was on the stupid game with his stupid headphones all night.

I wouldn't mind the game, it is listening to the incessant shit that gets driveled out of his gob. Grrrr.

He's probably still on it now, oblivious to why I am actually annoyed.

I had to say his name 5 times over to get his attention earlier, and I got back a nastily toned 'what' in response eventually.

Git. I'm glad he has to sleep on the sofa.

He's not normally this annoying - he just plays the game and types usually. I might stomp on the headphones accidently on purpose.... Grin

Titsalinabumsquash · 18/10/2012 01:10

I'm literally weeping here.

Woken up at 12, cannot get back to sleep.

My throat is raw from acid.
DS2 is in the bed with DP because he's had another nightmare.
The fucking cat is running around like a lunatic, if I could catch it the bell from its collar would likely be shoved where the sun doesn't shine by now.

I'm boiling hot but everyone else is really cold.
I'm on the sofa now, not likely to sleep again now.
The arsehole students have decided to start yelling outside the house again and they're lucky I'm so immobile otherwise I would be out there now threatening all sorts of horrible torture.

Please let this all be over soon! Sad

I'm meant to be meeting a group of friends for breakfast but come then I'm going to be exhausted and in even more pain than I am now. SadAngrySad

GTbaby · 18/10/2012 02:16

Hello all. Bored on the ward. The ONLY reason I am still here is because there r not enough staff to discharge me before night shift started. Seriously. 5 of us women all I same situation. DH even bought car seat up. Took bags down. I didn't order dinner as I thought I'd be gone!
N I'm still here Angry.
On plus side found a mw who actually gave me 2 mins of her time to advice about breast feeding. Feel a lil happier now. Even managed to get a few drops out manually. Just need to get baby to boob at same time as the drops!
But gave a plan. Sis is going to get me a latch assist n breast pump tomorrow morning.

DH bought me the advent shells today. But can't see how they wud help me feed? Seems more for protection of nipples. Then forming a shape? Oh well. I'm determined this will work. Being at home will help -as I don't need to worry about what other mums r thinking of me while baby screams for 10mins of trying to BF- so looking forward to b discharged tomorrow. If I'm not home by noon will have a hormonal rage. Blush

GTbaby · 18/10/2012 02:40

N to add to it. Lady on phone has gone. However snoring lady took over. Big loud man type snoring! Just want to sleep. N I'm hungry Sad.

LittleLolly · 18/10/2012 04:03

Anybody up? I seem to be having contractions. Had 4 in the last hour.

They are really sharp period type pains, very low down and some stabby fanjo pain. But they seem to be lasting ages, like 1-2 minutes, is that normal for contractions?

Google tells me it could be pre-labour or very early labour. Hmmmm.

GTbaby · 18/10/2012 04:13

Little! How exciting. How far apart r they? I felt similar in my labour. However didn't feel the full contractions so not sure what it's all like. Call the labour ward n get some advice? Bug hugs

wellieboots · 18/10/2012 04:22

Ladies!
I hung around here very early on, then have just been lurking as life was way too busy and I had a few falls that thankfully haven't done any damage to bubs but have given me some back/pelvic issues to deal with as well. So I've been lurking from a distance while you lovely ladies have filled up thread after thread!

Do you mind if I rejoin? DC1, 32, originally from Aberdeen but now living down under in Sydney. Have noticed that a number of you ladies are Scots and that we have a couple of other Aussies also. I am 38 weeks, finished work on Friday so finally have time for mumsnet if you'll have me at this late stage!

Congrats to everyone who has already had their "November" bubs and best wishes to everyone else!

Iheartpasties · 18/10/2012 04:29

littlelolly i'm here but sorry i do not know what contractions feel like!! good luck.

LittleLolly · 18/10/2012 04:29

I am timing them on my phone and they have been anything from 8-15 mins apart. I've had 7 since 3am. I felt like I was going to wet myself during the last one!

I thought I would know if I was in labour, but I've got no idea if this is real contractions, BHs, wind or anything!! I feel silly calling the midwives coz I know what they will say... Warm bath and paracetamol!

So I'm just bouncing on my ball and waiting for something to tell me this it definitely it!

Iheartpasties · 18/10/2012 04:30

yey another sydney-sider!!

TheDetective · 18/10/2012 05:06

I'm here in a strop thanks to dickhead DP waking me over an hour ago 'going to ved' sounds possible Lolly keep timing them. Mine started like sharp wincy type pains, but people feel them differently and describe them in varying ways. There is no way of knowing if this is it yet or not. I'd advise you to try and get a little sleep if it's not too bad at the minute....

Iheartpasties · 18/10/2012 05:17

littlelolly sounds promising! whats your edd?
