Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Gingeme · 08/06/2006 16:27

Swizzler all your joints and ligaments are softening up preparing your body for growth and birth of your baby so its more likely to pop something while your pregnant. Try to bend your knees or better still squat especialy when your getting the washing out of the machine and stuff like that. Your dh should carry the shoppping for you anyway simply because your carrying his first baby! I know how you feel though my hubby seems to be oblivious to my preg till I start to show a bit and shove my belly in his face. Apart from that hes an angel Smile.

Swizzler · 09/06/2006 11:09

Thankd for that Gingeme - I try and lift safely, but was wondering if I should stop lifting at work altogether, tho that would be difficult to do! Also, as I'm happy lugging stuff around at home it seems a bit hypocritical. I don't have a H&S assessment until 6 months, so will see what happens then.

Am I the only one getting huge - my bump seems to be expanding by the day! I'm a bit worried that I will be absolutely massive come September. Maternity trousers still falling down, though.

Gemmitygem · 09/06/2006 11:23

swizzler, I would definitely get DH to carry ANYTHING, including shopping. Maybe put it on a bit, lift something and then go 'ouch', or say you've read some research on the dangers of lifting..

I honestly would be really careful: my pelvis has suddenly gone out of whack (I think it's due to effects of pregnancy on an old injury I got aged 18 (so 12 years ago!!) when working on a chicken farm in Israel, (don't ask)), and am really limping around! Gingeme's right, everything is soft and liable to injury. If you're carrying books in your job, you could try making more trips and carrying fewer at a time, and be really careful pulling or pushing a trolley with books on it, etc.

But don't mean to lecture you (I just know I'm going to be one of these 'advice giving' Mums!!)

Have a scan tomorrow (22 weeks) so wish me luck!

Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

wuzzlefraggle · 09/06/2006 11:40

hello ladies Grin

hope that everyone is doing ok

gemmity - good luck with thescan tomorrow! are you going to find out the sex of the baby?????

dp is starting to have brainstorms on how we should decorate the babys room already lol.

DogMum · 09/06/2006 12:41

I think the general rules for shopping are: if it's shoes or clothing you can carry it, if it's food shopping or anything else mundane, get DP/DH to do it.

Although I am still doing the shopping myself (somehow he spends more money without getting what I want), I do get DP to unload the car.

Swizzler, I'm enormous as well if it's any comfort. I can't remember what it was like to have a waist.

Gingeme · 09/06/2006 12:49

Good luck for tomm gemmitygem. Hope it all goes to plan. Love it Dog mum . Your so right about the shopping he he. I dont feel too huge just yet but people keep saying Im getting bigger every day! Feel a bit more at ease about this test and scan etc. I went to play group this morning and had a good chat about it. Most of the Mums seem to think they can tell by the scan if there are any real problems. So I have 5 days to go then it will all be revealed. The sex of baby too Smile. Phew this weather is doing me in though. My hayfever is realy driving me crzy. Im going to the acupuncturist next week see what they can do for me.

Swizzler · 09/06/2006 13:19

It's nice the weather being sunny, but it's so HOT. I'm on holiday next week, tho, so out of the city for a while.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one without a waist! Bump also feels like it's pulling me forwards - trying hard to keep my posture OK to avoid backache. I'm going swimming tonight to cool down and float about a bit :)

Re the lifting, I heft boxes of papers around as well as books, so will be very careful! As we don't have a car, the shopping might get done in smaller trips, plus a bit of nagging at OH...

I'm off from tomorrow, so GOOD LUCK to everyone for your scans next week, especially Gingeme. I hope your worries are put at rest by the scan pics.

Seona1973 · 09/06/2006 20:21

Well I'm just back from the holiday from hell in Menorca Sad.

The resort was lovely but all of us ended up ill (dd, then dh and lastly me). We only got there on Friday and dd and dh were throwing up by Monday. Emma was still being sick on and off by Wednesday and was very lethargic and sleepy so ended up having to call out a doctor who prescribed something to stop the vomiting and some dioralyte stuff to rehydrate her (although it was so disgusting she wouldnt take more than a couple of sips - I tasted it and I wouldnt have taken it either). She put it down to Gastroenteritis. Dh was really bad too and was up all Monday night with sickness and diarrhoea (sp!). We had forgotten to pack the Immodium (as well as the buggy - but that is another story!!) so he had to get stuff from the pharmacy instead. I ended up with a bit of diarrhoea during the night last night and dh was a bit worried and tried to call for info from the doctor again but they sent one out instead only to find he couldnt really do much for me except say I could take the tablets that dh had already bought!!

We have spent most of our holiday money on doctor call outs (75 euros each) and prescription charges but we should be able to claim them back.

We were so glad we were only there a week as there seems to have been a few people in the hotel struck down by the same sort of thing. Wont be going back there then. Poor dd has been saying since Wednesday that she wanted to go home and was so pleased when she found out it was Friday today. (although wasnt pleased when we had to wake her at 6am Menorca time which is 5am UK time Grin)

Anyway, enough moaning - glad to hear scans are going well. I'm jealous as I wont get one unless I have a problem with the pregnancy so the sex will be a surprise this time. (last time I had Gestational diabetes so had a growth scan plus the hospital would tell you the sex - they dont now Sad)

Gingeme · 09/06/2006 20:59

Oh SEonna what can I say! Well not alot realy except poor you. I hope your all over it now and can get back to sort of normal. Thanks swizzler. Looking forward to it again now kinda. Hope you have a lovely weekend and dont get too over heated. ttfn xxxxx

jmcmugwump · 10/06/2006 16:18

hi girls,

Just back from my weeks holiday in Turkey and it has taken me over an hour to catch up on the thread!! (But did most of my catching up at work so never mind!:))
Glad to hear everyone is doing well, Gingeme i hope all goes well for you next week, i'm sure it will, I think sometimes these statistics do more to worry people than to make them feel better!

Holiday was fab, v hot, but really nice to spend some quality time together just the two of us, now that little 'un is doing gymnastics on a daily basis seems much more real that it son't be just the two of us for much longer! And everyone is saying that I am practically growing in front of their eyes - at least I finally have an excuse!!:o
Well off to buy some sensible summer shoes now - to a cry of 'not more shoes' from dp, but as I am allowed to lift shoes (thanks dogmum!) I won't need his services which i'm sure he'll be pleased at.

Well take care ladies & enjoy the sun Wink

Tigerlion · 10/06/2006 22:00

Glad to hear how you are all doing and good luck with the scan Gingeme. With all the technology available nowadays we almost know too much about our babies. Just think back to when we were born when they probably did not have scans and could just tell whether you were having multiples by feeling your stomach. With our DS we were told that he had a choroid plexus cyst at the 20 week scan and that they would have to rescan at 26 weeks to check on it. This meant that there was a hugely increased risk of Edwards Syndrome. I was terrified for the six weeks between the scans but the cyst had disappeared by 26 weeks. I do think that whilst reassuring, so much information is sometimes too much and there to show how over cautious the doctors are.

I had such bad swelling of my ankles last summer with my first pregnancy and I just don't want to go back there. I was told that reflexology or acupuncture may help. Has anyone had experience of either and do you recommend them?

We found out at the scan that we are having a girl which we are so pleased about. Our DS will be 14 months when she is born so I am sure that he will appreciate the age gap when they are older, hopefully providing him with potential girlfriends! It gives me an excuse to go and buy a few little girlie outfits as so many of her brother's clothes are so over boyish!

Gemmitygem, I recently read a book about a diplomat's wife who lived in Kazakhstan called Diplomatic Baggage. She makes it sound quite a unique place!

How is everyone dealing with the heat? It is so hot and sweaty. I hope that it cools down and is not as hot as last summer. Our DS was born in August so I was much larger at this time than I am now but really could do without the heat.

Hope you all have a great Sunday and good luck to everyone having scans next week.

Gemmitygem · 11/06/2006 14:06

hi everyone,

wow, everyone's been on hols, but sorry you had a terrible time Seona..

Scan went fine yesterday, baby was very active and turned right around to get away from the pressure of the scanning thing! Both me and DH saw what we thought was a willy; we'd told the doctor we didn't want to know, but as soon as she began the scan she said 'oh, I can see what YOU're having' in a way which made me think it is a boy, because surely you'd have to have a more detailed look to be sure it was a girl (?). So now it's kind of silly because we have all the hints and both thought we saw something, but DH wants not to think about it and it still be a surprise... OH well!

Hope everyone's having a lovely weekend! Tigerlion, haven't read that book yet but it was written by my old boss's wife, and she was a fantastic lady!

marthahm · 11/06/2006 22:10

am also back from exhausting weekend with family in ireland. a trail of disasters in our wake. nearly missed the flight as dh was on phone to his boss, spent 7 hours in total getting to destination just outside dublin (dh informed me cheerfully we could have been in marakesh by then!). arrived to find country house hotel was horrifically depressing 70's block in middle of building site. radiators were stuck on and windows wouldn't open. had just come to terms with this when mother and aunt started having row re minging hotel, only stopped by aunt sobbing...aunt and mother then proceed to rows with brother and various other uncles/aunts. finally make it back to uk to where car should have been, only to find it has been impounded due to permit running out. still, £200 lighter we return gratefully to home, almost 12 hours after we left from just outside of dublin Grin
not half as bad as poor old seona-sounds like a nightmare.
i think the only solution for the heat is total immersion in cold bath as often as poss. have fat ankles and a v. tight belly-feel like an emperor penguin in the sahara as i waddle around the house.
glad your scan went well gemity.

Gingeme · 11/06/2006 22:14

Tigerlion I can highly recomend acupuncture. I had the depo(contraceptive) injection for about a year and stopped it to have a rest from it but my periods didnt return and i became very ill and hormonal. Someone said to try acupuncture which I did in October last year. My period returned by November and I fell pregnant in January Grin So yes Id highly recommend it. Im going to the same place next time my dh gets paid to get some for my hayfever. The reason I say that is because it can work out a little bit expensive. But then that depends on what you have done and for what. But Ill tell you one thing I have never felt more relaxed in my life. My dh says Im still realy relaxed now so it must have done me good. Hope you have success in whatever you choose. x

whiffy · 12/06/2006 00:07

Tigerlion, if acupuncture doesn't appeal I'm a big fan of reflexology. I used to do it because it was so relaxing (much more so than a massage when you're PG) but I never really believed in it until my baby was breach (for weeks) and I was getting close to term, and my therapist said she'd tried to turn it and I might feel funny after the session.... one hour later DS rolled over (took a couple of hours and felt VERY weird), so ended up with a natural birth after all. Don't know how it works, but I'm a big big fan now.

Gemmity - you may be in for a shock - the woman in Diplomatic Baggage names and shames just about everyone she's ever met so you may find your DH mentioned by name......of course now we know your DH's line of work we'll have to start calling you Forrero Rocher from now on Smile

Gingeme - my heart goes out to you. Try to remember that you got through the first 12 weeks (when you had a 1 in 4 chance of losing your baby) so you have already gone through the worst odds you'll encounter this pregnancy, whether you decide to go for amnio or not....and make sure you get very rude and uppity and demand to know your consultants' amnio rates (1 in 100 is only the NHS average so there may be some doctors out there with really bad stats, if your guy doesn't rate at better than say 1 in 150 then that's definately the time to kick up a stink and demand someone else). Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Seona - urgh. your holiday made mine sound like a dream. did anyone out there have a good time over half-term??? I'm off to that 'parents need pampering' place next mth so am keeping my fingers crossed that I might get a better experience than my Spain nightmare.

Oh, by the way, sorry for not organising the meet yet - I went to the doctors last monday and promptly got sent straight to bed as had severe layringitis and my throat was nearly closed up. Have only just emerged back into civilisation (and only long enough to climb into the jacuzzi which is now set permantly to 'chilled' to try to get these ankles back down to size)....

anyway, I've set up a new thread to arrange a meet-up so we can take it offline form this main thread. I think this should take you to the link
www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1368&off=0&tot=2192

If that doesn't work then you'll find the thread under 'meet-ups' - 'Due in Oct 06 - meet-up'. Anyone who wants to join the meet please can you nip over to this thread and give me some details..

And that's it I guess. Is now midnight and am off to toss and turn in sweltering heat until I give up trying to sleep and just tune into BB for the rest of the night instead. Am big fan of BB solely on account of fact that even when pg, when I am even more forgetful and emotional and stupid than normal, I can reassure myself that I am still immeasurably more clever than the contestants. when george left saying he felt the fame would be too much of an intrusion I cried with laughter for days. Blush Am such a snob Blush.

Gemmitygem · 12/06/2006 04:22

morning all,

will think of all you at the meet up... Maybe I'll be able to make the next one as go on mat leave from mid August...

Whiffy, I hadn't thought of being named and shamed in the book, but then I'm not one of the main spies Wink, just write political reports about Kyrgyzstan which no-one ever reads. ACtually I'd be a crap spy as can't keep my mouth shut about anything...

Sunshine78 · 12/06/2006 08:31

Have just spoken to MW as hayfever is driving me mad and piriton is absoultley fine to take - so I'm off now to get some! Just thought other suffers would like to know!

Gingeme · 12/06/2006 09:20

Hey are you serious sunshine?? Shock. My gp said I cant take anything like that while preg!! Oh not fair. Might go and ask again today got to do something. I got in the bath last night and sneezed 16 times! Im so bl*y fed up with it and the skin round my nose looks like a corn flake even though Im using balsam tissues and vaseline........

wuzzlefraggle · 12/06/2006 10:44

hi everyone :)

swizzler, sorry to hear of your bad holiday! must have been awful with you all ill like that.

gemmity - glad that the scan went well!!

jmcmugwump - glad you had a nice time in turkey!

marthahm - sorry to hear about your exhausting weekend...sounds like it was chaos!

as for me, baby is kicking loads now, and dp can feel it now too. my new kitchen is being delivered on wednesday (woohoo!!), me and dp are getting married on Monday (a week today) and the day after we are off to fuerteventura for a week. so its a busy fortnight in the wuzzle house lol

Sunshine78 · 12/06/2006 11:31

Gingeme - I am serious she said they prescribe it all the time to pregnant women and not just for hayfever but other allergies aswell. MW said it is safe even though they will never put that on the leaflet! Had 1 tablet at 8.30 and feel human again! Smile

Gingeme · 12/06/2006 11:53

Just sent dh to get me some. Both my ds's suffer each year and they both take stuff that suits them. I feel quite jelous watching them. I know its silly but Im sure you know what I mean. Thankyou so much. Will take some as soon as he gets back. xx

Sunshine78 · 12/06/2006 12:27

Gingeme - no probs. I know how you feel I was in tears yesterday as felt so bad! DH didn't help by saying it's bad for everyone and that even his noise was itchy! I replied but at least you can take something (few more words added though which aren't repeatable!) Hope they work when you get them.

DogMum · 12/06/2006 13:53

Was feeling jealous hearing about everyone's sunny holidays until I read yours, Seona. You poor thing. Still, glad you're all back safe and sound. btw - I know it's not relevant at the moment, but for future reference Dioralyte is a fabulous hangover cure.

Felt the baby's first significant movements this morning, so I'm massively relieved - and excited. The whole thing is starting to feel like it's happening to me at last (instead of someone else.)

Tigerlion, I think you're spot on that we almost know too much these days. It's never been safer to become a mum, for both mum and baby, but sometimes the information just gives us more to worry about - mostly for nothing.

Gingeme · 12/06/2006 15:48

Sunshine what a difference in just a couple of hours!! My dh bought me the Piriton syrup. Wow I feel like my old self a bit more. Cheers love.....Grin

MrsBlobby · 12/06/2006 18:50

Whiffy - what's is the 'Parents need pampering' thing?

I have to say the heat is gettig to me. I've not known where to put myself all day. A cold bath is a great idea.

Was really silly last Friday, was rushing for the train at Waterloo, which was ridiculous as there was no chance on earth that I would get it and managed to trip right over, onto my knees, in front of a bus! A kindly cyclist got off to help me, but I was just left with a couple of bruised knees and a red face.

Mini was kicking nicely all weekend, so all hopefully is ok (everything's crossed).

Was our wedding anniv. yesterday (11 years!) so spend lovely day in Hampstead Heath - heavenly!
