Detective I'm convinced it's a deliberate policy by NHS management to stop home birthing Mums from what they see as 'taking too many midwifes out of public service'. Totally fecking unethical but I'll bet there's a financial motivation by someone high up. I'm sorry you had such a shit day - it sounds horrendous :(

YellowWellies · 04/10/2012 20:02

What they don't see is its a false economy - surely restricting womens' access to low intervention births costs the NHS money? What a shower of bastards.

TheDetective · 04/10/2012 20:12

What I find hard to believe is that in all the years I've been working, I've only ever known someone to be asked to attend hospital once because there was no community midwife on call. It was last week

Yet I'm being told that where I live it is much more common. Hmm

Evilwater · 04/10/2012 20:22

Well what a day!
Went to the GP, and I was told I've got a UTI. So I've been given antibiotics. I spent most of the day in pain, went to bed for an hour and then at five I really needed the loo. Looking at it, it had white bits in.

So I phoned the midwife, and it turns out I've broken my waters! I'm in no pain now, hurray!! But I have to go in for a induction at 11 tomorrow, if nothing happens.

I'll try and post as often as I can, but there is no signal at the hospital.
So pizza again for supper.

Detective that is shocking. I hate how little choice we seem to have about how we birth, and made to feel like bad parents if we dare suggest something that is outside of the "norm" even if it would actually be a safer option.
All I can say is keep sticking up for yourself, you know what is best for you and baby. If I was you I would go ahead with the home birth plan and if they won't come out then just do it alone as long as you feel able to cope. Only you can decide if you need to go in to the hospital or not when the time comes.

ditsygem · 04/10/2012 20:24

Oh my gosh - how exciting Evil!
Take care of yourself and do let us know how you are getting on if you can.
Sending lots of positive thoughts your way!

In the middle of house-move-upheaval but wanted to quickly pop in and wish Evil the best of luck for tomorrow.

Had my consultant appointment earlier this week and am now booked in for an ELCS on 2 Nov. Four weeks from tomorrow!

Getting the whooping cough and flu jabs next week. Still need to sort out cot and mattress but there are too many boxes in the way! Hoping to be unpacked and settled in soon because I really need to put my feet up at some point.

Wishing you all lovely evenings.

Catbag · 04/10/2012 20:32

YW I love the term 'shower of bastards'. Will find a way of using it myself Grin

Detective How appalling. I particularly take issue with the midwife ignoring you and turning to talk to your DH instead. I can see why you've been so upset

Evil Woooo! How exciting for you. Good luck with everything and keep us informed!

YellowWellies · 04/10/2012 20:33

Wow Evil crikey!!!! Good luck chick...

Omiword it's all getting rather real now isn't it? Shock

Passmethecrisps · 04/10/2012 20:40

Aw detective that sounds awful.

I am so excited evil! Are we going to get our very first live birth? OMG!

blonderthanred · 04/10/2012 20:47

Wow good luck Evil!

DesperateHousewife21 · 04/10/2012 20:50

kissyfur · 04/10/2012 20:55

Sorry to hear they are treating you so badly detective SadAngry

Wow evil good luck! Hope it all goes well, how exciting!

yw I'm also loving the term 'shower of bastards' will now be trying to looking for an appropriate time to use it!

applepieinthesky · 04/10/2012 21:05

Good luck evil. Sounds like it won't be very long now. How exciting Smile

Thanks to whoever made the suggestion about flight socks, will get some at the weekend.

Absolutely knackered today after the worst nights sleep ever. Luckily I don't have work tomorrow but have an NHS all day ante-natal class. I'll go along to the morning session but if its no good I won't bother with the afternoon session. Then got midwife appointment at 4.20 so will ask about wc vaccination and mention the swelling I've had. Flu vac on Saturday. One more week at work. Hooray!

Dixiebell · 04/10/2012 21:05

Good luck evil.

My little boy turned 2 today! This time 2 years ago it was all over but prob wouldn't have thought I'd be pg again 2 years later :) He had the biggest terrible twos tantrum ever when I made him go upstairs for bed tonight. Hopefully just tired as we've been up at 5/5.30 every day this week, not a sign of things to come!

Evilwater · 04/10/2012 21:15

I'm still leaking, but at what point should I go to the hospital?
Evil

Sophiathesnowfairy · 04/10/2012 21:16

Everything kissyfur said.

detective I know I would feel really pissed off if I were that is all appalling, and I thought the NHS would supporting home births? Obviously I got it wrong.

I popped into the GPs today, as it is next to DS's nursery, just to nquire if hey had their act together about th WH jab, anyway they were really pleasant and said they were just looking at their list of pregnant ladies as the vaccine had just arrived (they ordered it straightaway but they heard about it first through then media) and to speak to them again tomorrow when I o in for my midwives appointment.

Speaking of which, I have a long list of questions for tomorrow. Mainly, I have heard that the hosp I am going to don't do sweeps. Can they decide that? So if I am late (like with 3 and 4) would I have to go straight for an induction? But sweeps have worked the last 2 times for me, why spend the money doing the induction if a sweep would do it?

Also, if you have had a previous ceaserean isn't there something about not using the drip in induction? Or something?

Catbag · 04/10/2012 21:30

Evil I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you're fine to stay at home while you're leaking. It's once contractions start that they'll want you to come in, and only then when they are regular and increasing in intensity. If you're booked in for induction tomorrow, then they'll only want you to come in before that if you start contracting. Like, I said though, if I'm wrong, someone more knowledgeable will correct me Grin

NervousAt20 · 04/10/2012 21:37

detective how frustrating for you that you didn't get the support you needed, I hope that with all the bad support you've had that when the time comes there's someone on call that supports you at home through your labour

WOW evil how are you feeling? Very exciting! Good luck and I'm sure we'll all look forward to hearing how you get along if your up to it Smile

TheDetective · 04/10/2012 21:38

Awww thank you ladies, it is nice to hear positive things Grin

I've just had a chat with my mum, she is all outraged! I feel grateful that DP, my mum, and MIL are all very supportive of my plans. I'd be even more worked up if I felt totally alone!

Evil Eeeeeek, exciting! Though not good that the pain has gone! It isn't supposed to go! You want it to come on stronger to get your baby here!

Knew you had a UTI though ;)

Have you got a ball to bounce on? Get some good sleep in, but then get mobilising and bouncing to encourage things! Keep your fluids up, drink as much as you can, and eat little but often. Especially with the UTI, you want to get that out your system.

I do hope you don't need the induction though. Do be aware that it can take a couple of days for the process sometimes. Because your waters have gone though, it is usually quicker as you won't need as many gels or pessaries to open your cervix enough to break your waters, since they were kind enough to oblige themselves ;) Just so you know, it is likely that you will be advised to stay for 24 hours after birth to monitor the baby, if your waters have gone for longer than 24 hours before birth. But remember, it is always your choice :)

Feel free to ask any questions, i'll do my best to answer :)

LittleLolly · 04/10/2012 21:42
