Just spoken to my GP's surgery too- they've got limited stocks of the whooping cough vaccine that they are retaining for pregnant women at the mo and have booked me in for tomorrow afternoon. That's in the Yorkshire Dales, if that helps anyone.

blonderthanred · 02/10/2012 13:37

By the way sorry VQ if I'm asking you to repeat yourself - we should pay you for all this advice.

Elizadoesdolittle · 02/10/2012 13:54

I just booked my whooping cough jab for Thursday next week. Was very easy. I expected them not to know anything about it but the doctors receptionist was very helpful for a change. I'm in Kent.

MissMummy1 · 02/10/2012 13:57

VQ they are baby bots. Fairly cheap on ebay (£110 I think?) for a brand new starter set of 18 nappies, reusable and flushable liners and 10 boosters. Could you put different material boosters in them do you think to prevent the dampness thing?

I second you should be getting paid for all this advice!

Cacacaz · 02/10/2012 14:20

I've just spoken to my midwife re whooping cough vaccine. They are offering the vaccine from the 15th of this month, by which point I will be 37+1, she said she will make sure that my name is down to get it ASAP. I have to call back on Friday as she will try gets an appointment earlier if possible. Not ideal but at least she is trying.

Shelley that Christmas condom is hilarious, I can't imagine anyone using that!

Love the bear outfit, very tempted to order one Grin

Valium well done for fighting your corner.

We had ante natal class last night it was all about breast and bottle feeding, very interesting although it was definitely more geared towards promoting breast feeding.

Hoping sil and our little nephew get out of hospital today, he hasn't been feeding very well so that has been delaying things. He has lost 8% of his body weight so far, keeping fingers crossed he doesn't lose much more or starts to gain soon. He is so tiny and adorable Grin

WaitingForMe · 02/10/2012 14:28

I've got my jab on Thursday. The receptionist said they didn't have any in at the moment and thanks to VQ I said that that wasn't going to put me off and that at nearly 34 weeks this was the time I should be having it. I then asked whether there was a number I should call that covered the whole of my Primary Care Trust so I could locate a surgery willing to provide the medical care I required.

They found some and offered an appointment the same afternoon as I'm seeing the midwife.

ValiumQueen · 02/10/2012 14:37

Will reply about nappies later. Had whooping cough jab and the doctor also gave me the flu one so I am happy but sore. Feel a bit emotional now actually. Silly mummy.

horseylady · 02/10/2012 15:04

On the waiting list. I'll hassle tomorrow!!!!

Pram, car seat, matress here!!!!!!

blonderthanred · 02/10/2012 15:09

Ah I'm so glad you got it sorted VQ. It shouldn't have been such a battle but at least you won.

thereistheball · 02/10/2012 15:34

Hello ladies. Yellowwellies invited me over to check in. I've been too busy to spend much time here but for those who are interested, here's what's going on:

My boys were born 6 weeks ago tomorrow, at 29 weeks. They were 985g and 1190g, born 3 minutes apart with no pain relief apart from paracetamol. They were immediately transferred out of the hospital I was in to somewhere miles away that could look after them properly. A month later they were moved again to within striking distance of us, and her they wil stay til it's time for them to come home. After speaking to doctors last night we've been told to assume this will be in a further 6 weeks, with any time earlier than that being a bonus.

The boys are now both well over 2kg and doing well. They are still in intensive care because they need help with their breathing, but they are being weaned off the machines and it seems to be going well. They also need to master their sucking/swallowing/breathing reflexes, which will allow them to breast feed. They are learning this by spending time on the boob and also by sucking from a tiny straw that ou put in their mouths with a finger. They are drinking my milk exclusively, plus some extra protein and vitamins. I am pumping away and spending as much time with them as possible, but I have an older daughter whose child are arrangements are a disaster at the moment, so I am trying to sort that out as well as do a million other things this week that frankly I could do without having to worry about. Hopefully next week will be calmer and I can dedicate a bit more time to the boys.

I am having a cuddle with the bigger one at the moment. He is strapped to me with a rather loose-fitting boob tube and is using his arm as a pillow. His tiny hand is starfished against my chest and his ear (which has no cartilage yet) is folded over. He had a bath this morning which he loves - getting his ears underwater must remind him of the womb as it makes him go all wide-eyed with wonder and happiness. They are both becoming more and more awake and responsive to me, which is lovely.

Apart from the unfortunate fact that I cannot be in 3 places at once, things are as good as we could hope, given the circumstances. So far there have been no serious problems that aren't entirely usual and overcome with time. There are lots of tests to come, and immunisations, an extra injections to help them ward off some of the nastier winter viruses. DH and I get our whooping cough jabs tomorrow.
No waiting lists etc in France - and today at my 6 week check-up I was prescribed 10 free sessions of physiotherapy to help recondition my pelvic floor. Actually the one good thing that can be said about having twins so early is that I have avoided the physical difficulties of the 3rd trimester almost entirely. I was still bigger than a normal pregnancy when I gave birth but as I was on a strict diet for diabetes I have lost over a stone and a half and feel in much better shape than if I'd gone to term and had the section they promised.

Might check back soon - meanwhile enjoy your final weeks and please please put your feet up.

ValiumQueen · 02/10/2012 15:36

blonder I own six of the LL OSFA nappies. Unfortunately one size does not fit all,so they have been put by for DS, even though they are pink. They would not even do up on my DD, but I think you would easily get your money worth out of them. They are very similar to my favourite nappies, Fuzzis, and similar to eBay cheapies. On this offer, they are the same price as the eBay ones, but would fetch a better resale price as they are a recognised brand. It is a good offer, good nappy, so I recommend them. May not be so good for overnight, but time will tell. The fleece lining keeps the bot nice and dry, the nappies and inserts dry quickly. I would recommend getting some little lamb bamboo boosters to use in addition if needed. These take longer to dry, but are worth it. You would likely need more than 8, but that is certainly enough to get a feel of them without too much outlay.

MM are you sure they are baby bots? I can only see a website by that name, and have looked on eBay but cannot find them. A link please? It is a liner you would need to help prevent dampness. Fleece is best, and you can make your own.

ValiumQueen · 02/10/2012 15:43

Wow thereisaball thank you for updating us. We have been thinking of you all. I can only imagine how hard it is with your older child to consider also. I felt torn whilst feeding DD2 and DD1 wanting to play. Nothing compared to your situation. I am so pleased that the boys are doing so well, and a weight loss is always a bonus Grin well done also on feeding them. Every drop is magic as far as I am concerned. I do hope you do not have to wait much longer to finally take them home. All the very best Thanks

ValiumQueen · 02/10/2012 15:45

Not sure why the e b a y mentions above have become links Confused. They are not meant to be.

thereis thank you for the update, I'm thinking of you and your tiny ones and hope they are home where you all belong soon.

I have spent the day working working working, there is now nothing that needs doing for this babies arrival, his cot is made, the mobile is on, the blankets are washed and folded away in the cupboard. I have made the pushchair and fitted the new cosy toes in it and stacked away all the many boxes of nappies/wipes. Shattered now. Zzzzz

YellowWellies · 02/10/2012 16:57

Tits - I'm itching to get our crib up and made - so that I can just relax - everything else is done I think. Bar getting the car seat base I think - must check the list. Am getting really broody especially when they are kicking and hiccuping. I'm sooooo curious as to whether they are a boy or a girl. Having audited the baby clothes I've got more girls than boys stuff - so sods law it'll be a boy! (I'd love either) I can't believe I have the intuition of a brick and don't know what they are!

LittleLolly · 02/10/2012 17:04

whooping cough saga update

Practice nurse called me back to say she has spoken to my GP and the GP says they aren't offering the vaccine yet and if they start doing it they will call me. I wasn't happy to accept this as I'm now 36+1 and it generally takes 2 weeks to get an apps at my GP surgery with the nurse.

So I contacted the office of my Primary Care Trust to ask their stance on the whooping cough vaccine and was put through to the Public Health advisor. He was extremely helpful and said the information has definitely gone out to all GP surgeries in my PCT, and they should be giving the vaccine. He said to speak to the practice manager at my GP and if I still can't get an appt then call him back in the morning and he will take it up with them! He also said I am doing the right thing being pushy as it is so important!

I have left a message for the practice manager to call me back tomorrow morning, as she has gone home now. Her receptionist took ALL the details of why I was calling so I am hoping for some answers tomorrow!

So let's see what happens tomorrow!

ValiumQueen · 02/10/2012 17:07

MM I am a bit concerned that they are a brand I have never heard of. They appear to be imports from New Zealand, and may well be lovely, but without being able to read loads of impartial reviews, I would not encourage anyone to spend out over £100 on them. Indeed I would not encourage anyone to buy shed loads of one type until you know they will work for you.

I would recommend you using a trial of nappies to see what works for you. Or perhaps getting a variety off eBay, so long as you do not spend too much as they are a bit addictive. The all in ones nappies like the ones you refer to are similar to totsbots easyfits. They are as near to disposables as you can get, but being bamboo will take a while to dry, no matter what the seller says.

If you feel up to it, hang out on the nappy forum here. I have learned so much.
