Argh chicken pox , DS has finally succumbed to the spots, so any survival tips would be very useful & if anyone knows whether I will still be immunosuppressed because of finishing chemo in march I would be most appreciated as I can't find out.

Just argh

aufaniae · 19/10/2012 08:43

Knittingnovice I don't know anything about it myself but I would speak to your midwife team or GP asap. Do you have a number for the midwife team on your notes?

Are you saying you had it yourself but are worried your immunity might not be working?

It must be very worrying, however I hope it's reassuring that the NHS website says "it?s estimated that about three in every 1,000 women (0.3%) catch chickenpox during pregnancy. Most pregnant women who get chickenpox recover, with no adverse effects on the baby." link

Keeping my fingers crossed for you x

MrsJD I'm so sorry to hear your sad news. Thinking of you and your family...

edinfirst · 19/10/2012 09:07

panda(Nora) I am away with work and had my first full nights sleep since August! Didn't wake up once! The mattress was really firm and I felt as if all of me was very well supported; no aches and pains at all. Seriously thinking about investing in a new mattress now?

Hope everyone has a good Friday, thank goodness it's nearly the weekend!

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 19/10/2012 09:25

My husband did ask if he needed to get a new bed/mattress edin, but for me the problem is my brain is going round and round and round so I just can't drop off.

usernamegoeshere · 19/10/2012 09:30

MrsJD so sorry to hear your news, I hope you are getting lots of support.

I didn't sleep hardly at all last night, have a stinking cold & while I usually load myself up on so many medication that I start to rattle, this paracetamol only business feels completely alien to me.

15+0

aufaniae · 19/10/2012 10:01

MrsJD I'm so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and your family xx

aufaniae · 19/10/2012 10:03

Chamomile tea can help settle your mind when you have racing thoughts. It's really gentle, it's safe to take while pregnant.

The bit I haven't worked out though is how to take it at 4 in the morning without waking myself up even more by getting out of bed!

Think I might try drinking a cup before bed and seeing if that helps at all.

JessieEssex · 19/10/2012 10:15

MrsJD so sorry to hear your sad news. Be really kind to yourself.

re sleep, a nutritionist friend of mine told me that magnesium is known as 'nature's sedative'. I took it for quite a long time, just one tablet before bed, and it made a huge difference to my sleep (I am a middle of the night waker!) I did stop taking all supplements apart from pregnacare before we conceived, but it may well be safe to take during pregnancy, I haven't looked into it.

Just got back from my 16 week appt and all is fine. Heard a very loud 'galloping horse' heartbeat. According to old wives' tales, this means it's a girl (boys are like trains)... Anyone else heard this?

trying2bpos · 19/10/2012 10:53

Oh MrsJD so sorry to hear your sad news and sorry you had to find out at your 12 week scan that's really rough. Be gentle with yourself. Sending lots of hugs your way.

username I know what you mean with this cold malarkey I was racking my brains trying to work out if I could take some more paracetamol at 3am the other morning as my throat was so sore!

Oo jessie I like the sound of magnesium especially if it keeps you asleep I rarely have trouble dropping off it's just the middle of the night waking that's a problem.
Will have to listen out for the galloping horse or train noises on Monday when I see my midwife, not heard that one before!

Just had my final reassurance scan at the pregnancy support service and I have to say it was the fastest scan I've ever had! Baby all present and correct kicking and waving away, hurrah, such a relief! Roll on 20 week scan, seems an age away but after that that's it for visuals til D-day!

mattresses just be aware that the thin foam ones (from cribs and moses baskets) probably won't last another baby anyway unless hardly used. I got a shock when I put DS in his cotbed for the first time and looked at how flat the crib mattress had become. I felt like such an awful mother!

edin you sure it's the mattress and not the being away from home/OH bit that gave you a full nights sleep?LOL

aufaniae flask of hot water and teabag by bed? Or flask of tea by bed?

I'm still only guestimated to be 12 weeks. Today I've been having period type cramps. No blood loss at all. I'm trying not to worry as I've read it's fairly common at 12 weeks to get this. Anyone else been there who can reassure me?

birdbrain17 · 19/10/2012 12:37

About getting to sleep I really found that having a bath in the evening helps because it relaxes your body more then a shower.

flaminpanda if it's just cramps don't worry it might actually be stretching pains. I had these so bad I called NHS direct in the middle of the night to find out what stretching pains are!! But if you have blood call a GP or midwife straight away. Don't worry I think we're all a bit paranoid at the moment for every little thing...

enjay0811 · 19/10/2012 13:56

knitting can't give any advice bout chicken pox and pregnancy but for your LO, Piriton (over 1 yrs old) helps stops the itch and used potassium permanganate in the bath with my 2dd's - small crystals/ salts tht you sprinkle in the bath, helps the spots scab up and relieves itching and turns the water bright purple which my LO's thought was hilarious! Can get it from chemists or amazon etc x

PandaWatch · 19/10/2012 15:10

flaminpanda I had stretching pains that were so painful they actually took my breath away! That was when I was around nine weeks (but have had them since, although not as bad) and our scan at 11+6 showed a healthy, well developing baby.

I know from experience that it's scary but from what I've read they are really common!

Fingers crossed for you but I'm sure you won't need it!

trying2bpos · 19/10/2012 15:11

knitting I'd try asking your cancer specialist/nurse about the immunosuppression or maybe macmillan support line might have the info. I'd like to think that over 6 months after chemo your white blood cells would have recovered but I'm by no means and expert and it probably depends what drugs, doses and timescale you were on.
I assume you were immune before the treatment or had chickenpox as a child? Sorry can't be more help but pls let us know what you find out and how you're both doing.

Knittingnovice · 19/10/2012 15:29

Have read and caught up now dc's are both sleeping.
mrsjd really sorry to hear your sad news
DS is not itchy, just cross he can't go to school. Have stocked up on piriton & eurax and 'treats' as I had to go to the phonics meeting at school this morning. Thank goodness DH works nights, he walked in and I walked out.

Spoke to the pharmacist who said immunity should be fine re chemo, and to be careful when spots start scrabbling/crusting as you can get CP again. I have an oncology appt on Monday and Obs consultant on Tuesday so will speak to them. Have left a message for the MW, but prob won't hear before Monday anyway.

enjay I might look for the potassium stuff as I am sure purple bath water would amuse anyone. It looks like I'll be dealing with this for a while especially if DD takes the full 2 weeks to show spots.

miarosemum · 19/10/2012 15:31

Mrs John. So sorry to hear your news xxx

Teapig · 19/10/2012 18:20

Thanks for the context on the risk results bunny that's good to know.

Giddypants · 19/10/2012 20:23

So sorry to hear your sad news mrsJD Flowers
chickenpox I found porridge oats in the foot of a stocking plonked in the bath and gently rubbed over the skin, works wonders while also virasoothe was really good at taking the itch off before and during the night.

wonky bump* yes baby hanging out on my right side quite a bit.

Having a lot more movement over the past few days some bubbles but also some pops tried to get DH to have a feel but not strong enough yet.

Giddypants · 19/10/2012 20:30

Damn posted too soon, my back is really bad think it was sleeping on a hard mattress.
Is anyone else bones clicking?

So sorry to hear your sad news mrsJD, be easy on yourself and feel free to come back on here if you need to keep talking if it would help at all. Thanks

I'm in bloody agony at the moment with full blown SPD already, not great when I have to go off into placement and can't be seen to be slacking etc etc Completed my first essay this week and did my first observed interview so it's all go here.

Mama1980 · 19/10/2012 22:04

Just to say scan today showed babe happy and healthy, the placentas still bleeding according to our blood tests (they pick up foetal something in my blood apparently)but for now babe is ok. Smile

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 19/10/2012 22:09

Hang in there Mama and baby Mama! Glad he/she's still ok. Could the bleeding settle down?
