All this talk of buying things for the baby has got me a little bit panicked! We have bought absolutely nothing for our baby yet, partly as we?re still pre-20 week scan, but also because we have no idea where to start. We are on a limited budget and have a small, already overcrowded house (baby won?t be having a nursery, will just have to sleep in our room) so I?m aware that we?ll have to do quite a lot of research to find out what we need and what the best options are of each. We can?t afford to get cluttered up with things we won?t use. Once we have a clear idea of our shopping list then I will try to get it all second hand.

So... what would you say are the key things to buy before the birth? Bearing in mind I intend to breastfeed and will be doing a lot of walking to the shops while carrying baby (I don?t drive and it will be a good way of keeping fit). I am not too worried about baby clothes as we will buy some cheap essentials and will probably get a lot of nicer stuff as gifts. What bothers me is that he/she has nothing to sleep in or be carried in, or go in the car in (DH has a car) and whenever I look into getting carriers and prams and pushchairs and slings there just seems to be so much choice! Besides which, there?s no space for all of them in the house!

Help!

P.s. -we started the 'potential names' discussion last night and have realised we each hate the other one's favourites! Ah well, I guess it's compromise time!

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 18/10/2012 16:39

I found this page on the NHS website which lists the basics you need to have. I've been thinking about stuff but haven't bought anything yet because a large part of me still doesn't believe I'm really pregnant. Might go shopping mad after next Wednesday's scan.

My husband has fallen in love one boy's name but he can't have it. The name itself is fine but coupled with our surname, nope never going to happen. Along the lines of being Mrs Bennett and calling your son Gordon.

ratbagcatbag · 18/10/2012 16:42

Hi all

Just had my 16 week appointment and heard the heartbeat, so amazing, midwife was also impressed at my downs result as its 1 in 30,000. I'm 29 so average is 1:970.

Empress - haven't bought anything either, fit a few bits donated to me but not buying anything until after xmas and as I'm 31st march, I should go before most of you ;)
Car boots have so much stuff cheap its unbelievable.

EmpressMatilda · 18/10/2012 17:33

tattooedapril87Yes, I know what you mean. In the run-up to the 12 week scan I was thinking that once I got that one done I was pretty much home and dry and could relax. I did relax for about 2 weeks then I started thinking ?but they check for things that are wrong at the 20 week scan? so feel like I can?t relax until after that one. Blimey, is this what motherhood will be like?!

trying2 I think Olbas Oil is one of the few things that?s OK in pregnancy. At least I hope so as it got me through when I had a cold last month!

flaminnora Thanks for the link. I will check it out. I have found a few similar ones too and thankfully they do all say pretty much the same thing!. Still, the essentials lists do seem to include rather more than I was intending to get. I think I will be going to quite a few car boot sales and hanging out on ebay!

Glad to hear there are others on here that haven?t bought yet either. Makes me feel a bit better!

username That?s interesting about diet. I had never heard anything about eating habits being passed to baby in this way but it seems quite logical. I had better improve my diet asap! I am normally quite a healthy eater but I do find that now I?m pregnant I am constantly hungry and often feeling faint so my chocolate and crisps intake is right up whereas pre-pregnancy I would have been fine with a Ryvita or an apple.

Welcome along nutty

Glad to come on here tonight and read some lovely positive news. I've had a really bad shock today - sorry if this distresses anyone, but need to share.......

A woman I know has had her baby stillborn at 39 weeks, and its really knocked me for six. She felt a lack of movement so went to hospital and the heartbeat was really weak and then disappeared altogether. She then had to endure labor and give birth to the baby.

Feeling really, really sad for my friend and her lovely family - but also made me really think about how fragile our tiny little ones are and how even if you do everything right, sometimes it's just not meant to be. Thankfully stillbirth is rare - according to the NHS it's around 3 in a thousand. Still feeling really shaken up by the news and had to come home from work early this afternoon. Having a lie down and giving my bump extra hugs tonight and remembering how lucky I am even to have got this far.

Sorry for the downbeat post - look forward to reading some more lovely scan and MW stories to cheer me up!

enjay0811 · 18/10/2012 19:40

dandelion a close friend of mine had a little girl stillborn at 36 wks. Same thing really, healthy pregnancy but lack of movement prompted a scan and she'd died. Tht was bout 4 yrs ago and still breaks my heart thinkin bout it now. Makes me give my girls an extra big kiss and cuddle! I don't think you can predict these things tho and wld drive yourself mad worrying!

Welcome nutty how old is your LO?

empress did you mention bout 1 sided bump? I'm the same! On my left atm tho. Just think baby is making the most of the room in there before it gets too cramped!

enjay0811 · 18/10/2012 19:43

Sorry just checked back on posts and it was jessie tht said about wonky bump!

LoobyLou33 · 18/10/2012 20:49

Ahh I really wouldn't panic about buying stuff yet folks, we're not even half way through our pregnancies! Now's a good time to read up on products and ask friends with babies what worked for them, maybe even try some stuff out, but it only takes a few days to order something (or a few weeks to bid on ebay)... Fun to bat about ideas though. Grin

On that note - I used a hugabub sling and DS mostly liked it and often slept in it, though he outgrew it by 6 months. Hugabub is similar to the Moby wrap. An ergo or manduca (which I have) lasts into toddlerhood but perhaps not so soft and snuggly with a tiny newborn. I used a sling library which was great.

It might be worth asking a health visitor about prams - if it's not years old I can't see why it should be a safety issue using a 2nd hand one, I think it's more about making sure they're not too overdressed. To be honest there's more of an issue with people letting babies sleep for long spells in the car seat, as they should sleep lying flat til 6 months both for the spine and breathing safety (head can slump forward more easily in car seat).

And up in the night - goodness yes - loo at least once a night but also trouble breathing / back-to-back colds which keep disrupting my Zzzzzs. Then DS has started waking around 4-5am. Gross!

Teapig · 18/10/2012 20:53

So sorry to hear about your friend dandelion. My heart goes out to her and makes all the worrying seem futile. What will be will be I guess.

I was pleased to see your post mama. I'm sorry you'll have to stay in hospital but you're in the safest hands there. You really are an inspiration, I can't say how pleased I am for you.

empress I'm the same as you: haven't bought a thing and don't really know what to buy. We'll probably start buying after Christmas I think.

Got my results back and my risk level is 1 in 1906. I know it's not high risk but it's certainly not as good as some have had. I'm 32 does anyone know what the average is for that age?

Got my 20 week scan on 29th november and thinking that's the reassurance I need to finally relax.

Welcome to the newbies! Am now seriously considering a move to Sweden!

LoobyLou33 · 18/10/2012 21:03

flaminnora re: the Oyster, I suppose "light" is relative! It's very easy to push and a lot lighter than some travel systems, but now I also have a Maclaren buggy (from gumtree) which I have carried up stairs while also holding DS! You definitely couldn't fold down the Oyster and carry a baby at the same time, but then it's not really designed for that...travel systems are always more bulky and heavy.

I do think it's a good piece of kit - you can easily pop out the pushchair section to swap direction or swap for the car seat, and it's very simple to collapse. I use it for walking locally, but it wouldn't work well on public transport.

My friends says - everyone ends up with a Maclaren in the end! (or that umbrella style stroller). But that's more for older babies and toddlers.

JessieEssex · 18/10/2012 21:05

Yep, my wonky tummy is weird! I can only feel the wonkiness when I lie down but I guess that as my bump gets bigger it might get more obvious!

Does anyone else still feel sick? It's not as bad as it was but I had really hoped it would have gone by now Sad

MrsJohnDeere · 18/10/2012 21:07

All over for me I'm afraid Sad

Went for my Nuchal scan and found that the baby/foetus (not sure what you call it) had died at 6 weeks. The sac has continued to grow well which is why I look and feel pg. No signs of it passing in its own so have to have it removed.

Very numb and will try and deal with it tomorrow. Gutted for dh who was really excited. I'm a strange mixture of relieved and sad. I hadn't wanted a 3rd dc but was coming round to the idea.

Best of luck to the rest of you, and thank you for your support over the last few weeks.

wishfulthinking1 · 18/10/2012 21:14

mrsjohn - I'm so sorry for your loss- it must be such a sad, confusing time for you and your DP. I'll be thinking of you both x

LikeCandy · 18/10/2012 21:21

So sorry to hear your news MrsJD - look after yourself, you're in my thoughts xx

JessieE I have a wonky bump too, not noticeable when I'm stood up, but first thing in the morning it's definitely over to the left!

dandelion what an awful situation for your friend to be in, how sad. I only know one person who had a stillborn baby, I know she took a lot of support from sands and other charities (and now fundraises for them) and has recently had a new addition to her family

HaveALittleFaith · 18/10/2012 21:25

Oh I'm so sorry for your loss MrsJD. Such sad news :( take care of yourself.

I have been booked back in for Tuesday for my repeat scan. Lets hope the little monkey is in a better position!

Um? 12+6?! I should know more Tuesday :)

Nuttyfilly · 18/10/2012 21:41

So sorry MrsJ thinking of you Xx

bunnygirl80 · 18/10/2012 22:23

mrsjd sorry to hear your sad news

dandelion so sorry to hear about your friend. I know a couple of people who have had stillbirths and its utterly heartbreaking.

teapig I'm 32 and was told risk for age is something like 1 in 475

Re second hand carry cots, I got DS's pram from eBay, and I just washed the carry cot mattress before we used it. The mattress was is just a piece of foam anyway, and there are plenty of places here that will cut a new piece of suitable foam to size, or you might be able to buy a new mattress from places that sell spares for prams.

Missmuffet28 · 18/10/2012 22:30

Really sorry to hear that mrsjohndeere please take care of yourself big hugs for you and your family xxxxx

edinfirst · 18/10/2012 22:36

I actually got some sleep last night so am feeling almost human have another scan and round if blood tests today-looking very pregnant now- probably because the weight is just falling off me lol! I'm all bump. My children have been visiting everyday as much as possible, the nurses/midwives are being very understanding i explained to my 4 year old as a sort of holiday with his aunts/uncles/grandma my dd is still very upset but she's also very excited about the baby. I hope everyone else is well? I will try to catch up properly as soon as I'm allowed my computer.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 19/10/2012 08:26
