Bella, Mabel and Lysettes, are you all looking at a different chart from me????
I posted earlier to you guys cause I thought you may have read it wrong but worried that I am now! Blush As I posted earlier, I read it like it should give you a definitive answer, ie a pink or a blue asterix!

homemama · 21/04/2006 19:37

Oh and happy birthday, Pol! Smile

mandaz · 21/04/2006 22:34

Hi all, haven't been on for a few days.

Congrats to all who have found out what they're having.

I have my scan on Wednesday. I can't wait to see baby! I went shopping today with a friend and got a couple of baby bits. Went a bit gooey over the baby clothes! Am really hoping I'm having a girl. I really don't mind if it's not but I just love all those cute clothes!

I was interested to read that some people are missing prawns etc. I actually emailed one of the pregnancy magazines because they had a recipe which used mozzerella cheese, which I have been avoiding after my Midwife told me I wasn't supposed to eat it. They sent me the following reply(sorry if it makes this a long post but I'm not sure how to attach it):

Thanks for getting in touch. This is from the Government Food Standards Authority's website. Hope it answers your query.

It can be confusing trying to work out which foods you can eat and which foods you should avoid when you're pregnant. You might find it helpful to look at this list of some of the foods you don't need to avoid:

Shellfish, including prawns – as long as they are part of a hot meal and have been properly cooked

Live or bio yoghurt
Probiotic drinks
Fromage frais
Crème fraîche
Soured cream
Spicy food

Mayonnaise, ice cream, salad dressing – as long as they haven’t been made using raw egg. Generally, mayonnaise, ice cream and salad dressing you buy in shops will have been made with pasteurised egg, which means it’s safe to eat. But it’s better to avoid home-made versions if they contain raw egg. If you're not sure about any of these foods when you're eating out, ask staff for more information

Honey – it’s fine for pregnant women but honey isn’t suitable for babies under a year old

Many types of cheese including:
Hard cheese, such as Cheddar and Parmesan
Feta
Ricotta
Mascarpone
Cream cheese
Mozzarella
Cottage cheese
Processed cheese, such as cheese spreads

Now I'm really confused!

Coriander73 · 22/04/2006 08:30

I guess I'm just an old romantic then!!!!! There is part of me that is naturally very curious but we're going to wait until Sep!! I think also because last time the labour / birth went pear shapped the best bit for me was coming around in the recovery room asking what we'd had & being so over the moon it was a girl! Even though I was still half asleep & feeling crap it was a great feeling....:o

I had cooked prawns for lunch the other day & made the mistake of telling DH...honestly talk about the food police!! I rang my midwife & she said as long as they are cooked & you eat them in a reputable place then you should be OK...!! I remember last time having a real thing for tarasamalata only to be horried this time when this midwife said it's a no go area!! Compo, I had an ice cold Becks last night with my first curry since last Nov!!! It was bliss.....:o

HellKat · 22/04/2006 08:40

Morning all.
Angeliz- Congrats on it being a boy.

We're only finding out the sex because I don't fancy giving the lo a complex lol. I keep referring to it as a "her" so be interesting to see if I'm right or not. I'm not bothered what it is as long as he/she is healthy & happy.

Not sure if any of you have seen the Due in Dec thread but Cupcakes is on there!!!! She's pg again Grin Wonderful or what?

mandaz · 22/04/2006 11:35

Coriander - I'm not going to find out either.I love the idea of having a surprise at the end of all that hard work! I've chosen a nursery theme which has lots of bright colours in it which would suit either boy or girl. I really am getting excited now!

The reason I posted all that stuff on food is that I find it really confusing that I keep getting conflicting advice. My Midwife said definately no prawns, mayonnaise or soft cheese, including mozzerella. Yet, other people say they've been given different advice. Things are complicated enough without adding to them!

compo · 22/04/2006 18:36

I know what you mean Mandaz. I've been eating prawn toast as my midwife said prawns are fine as long as they aren't raw. What I wanted to know is it okay to eat deep fried camembert or brie given that it is fried and therefore killing any listeria?

OP posts:
compo · 22/04/2006 18:39

Just found this is thr archives: "Cheese is Ok thoroughly cooked - I looked this up on the relevant gvmt websites - so deep fried camembert is fine as Listeria doesn't survive a thorough cooking process. This also applies to thoroughly grilled goats cheese - hoorah!

" Me and dh going to an Italian next saturday night so might have brie or camembert as a starter - yummy!!

mabel1973 · 22/04/2006 20:01

hello

I used to work in the food industry specifically the cheese industry as a microbiologist for a while.
In case anyone is confused there is a risk of listeria with chilled soft cheeses (such as boursin, brie etc) as there is with a number of chilled foods such as salads. However the vast majority of UK cheeses are made with pastuerised milk under very high levels of hygiene and are routinely monitored for listeria. I personally haven't stopped eating soft cheese (that's not to say everybody should if they don't feel comfortable with it).
If cheese is cooked i.e. deep fried brie, then the cooking process would kill any bacteria anyway.
The same goes for prawns - best to eat them hot rather than the chilled ones (not raw!) you get in prawn sandwhiches.
Mayonnaise such as Helmans is fine as it is pastuerised in the jar.
Sorry to go on - i do hope this helps, but it winds me up when people are given so much duff advice about what to eat, as if it isn't hard enough to find something you fancy eating when you're pregnant as it is, and there's enough other stuff to worry about anywayl!!!

mabel1973 · 22/04/2006 20:11

p.s. I hope you don't all think I'm a know it all now!

calvemjoe · 22/04/2006 20:59

God mabel, you're such a know it all Wink

homemama · 22/04/2006 23:22

Very good Mabel, but did you read the astrology chart correctly? Wink Grin

mabel1973 · 23/04/2006 10:13

only trying to help Wink
the astrology chart I found had a blue dot or a pink dot, then a % chance at the side - not sure if it's the right one, anyway it had a definate pink dot for DS - I know he likes watching me put my make-up on but he's definately all boy!

HellKat · 23/04/2006 10:18

Morning all.
Lol Mabel. I came across one like that. Said little ds2 was girl. Hmmmmmmm. Doubtful somehow as he's as boyish as they come. A few have said this one's a girl so who knows.
How's everyone?
Hope everyone has a great day. xxxxx

compo · 23/04/2006 12:22

Thanks for the info Mabel. I've been eating Boursin as it's definitely on my list of cheeses okay to eat:
"Cheeses which are SAFE to eat in pregnancy

Hard cheeses:
Austrian Smoked, Babybel, Caerphilly, Cheddar, Cheshire, Derby, Double Gloucester, Edam, Emmental, English goat's cheddar, Feta (if bought in the UK), Gouda, Gruyere, Halloumi, Havarti, Jarlsberg, Lancashire, Mozzarella, Orkney, Paneer, Parmesan, Pecorino (hard), Provolone, Red Leicester.

Soft and processed cheeses:
Boursin, cottage cheese, cheese spread, cream cheese, Mascarpone, Philadelphia, Quark, Ricotta."

Lysettes · 23/04/2006 16:35

Homemama - i saw the same thing on the chart - had a little blue star, and then the percentage at the side.

I've been warned off shellfish because the chances of getting a dodgy one are higher anyway - like food poisoning from properly cooked mussels, that kind of thing....

also i've been told that parmesan is ok, but then looked on the label the other day and it said it was made from unpasteurised milk! totally confused now....

and smoked things - has anyone else been warned off them and if so for what reason? I was told not to eat smoked salmon etc becuase you don't know how long it was sitting around for before it was smoked, but annother preggy friend of mine said the smoking produces a particular bacteria that is harmful!

and liver? I have been told by mw that it's a totally no go, but very old fashioned GP has said it's ok but in small doses and as long as it's fully cooked (like everything!) - what do you think?

We find out the sex on thursday - not that it's stopping me shopping for lots of little white things Blush - I will have to stop leaving the house soon Blush Blush

fingers and feet have started swelling up, and i have to take my engagement and wedding rings off - dh is very concerned about this! like anyone is going to take advantage of me in this state - particularly as weveryone at work has started asking me again if i'm having twins.... they finally stopped when i said i'd ben weighed and measured at the hospital last week and they said that both size and weight were fine!

Have a good start of the week everyone - and remember, there's another bank holiday round the corner Grin

calvemjoe · 23/04/2006 17:12

Ok, so I'm 3hours and 9 mins through my 8hour shift. My back hurts, my hips hurt and my ribs hurt and I'm not due to start maternity leave till 38 weeks Sad

Lysettes, bless you, swelling up already. I didn't do that till late on last time. Rest lots and keep your feet up (like you need an excuse Grin)

Take care everyone x

mabel1973 · 23/04/2006 17:13

I'm going to come over all cheesey again
Lysettes - parmesan is ok because it is a hard cheese and matured for a long time which means it is more acidic and not the sort of environment bacteria can grow in.
Smoking is a form of preservation, so kills off the bacteria - not sure why you wouldn't be able to eat smoked food. I know some smoked fish is dyed, which possibly is not that healthy?
I think not eating liver is to do with the high vitamin A (?) content as opposed to any risk of food poisening.
Hope this helps.

homemama · 23/04/2006 18:52

Hi everyone! Mabel, hope you know I was only joking! Smile
As for the chart, the % thing isn't your % for this pregnancy but your % chance of each for that year e.g age 31 60% boy 40% girl.
Anyway, enough of that, I don't even believe in astrology! Grin

Lysettes, as Mabel says, parmesan is fine as it's a hard cheese. I wasn't aware of the smoked food thing but smoked salmon isn't recommended because it isn't cooked, just smoked. Personally, I avoid tuna and salmon in pg because of the high mercury content. However, I'm sure that liver really is a big no no as it's so high in vit A which is linked to birth defects. All ante natal vit supplements have vit A taken out. Sorry about your swellings too! x

Hope everyone else is well!

tassis · 23/04/2006 20:28

I was out for an absolutely GORGEOUS meal a few weeks ago and totally forgot there were things I couldn't eat and polished off prawn and smoken slamon starter. Oooops. Realised when I was recounting to our babysitter how lovely it'd been that I shouldn't have had it.

Went to Glassgow yesterday in search of maternity clothes and came home with 3 tops and lovely trousers. Tried them all on again today and - unbelievably - I don't like any of them. Aaaargh. So the search continues...

I have a good friend who's coming to visit in a couple of weeks time and I'm really hoping some of her stuff (she had a grogeous dd last Sept) might fit.

Mabel, sorry if you've already said this, but is mozerella OK or not??

What's everyone thinking about wine? I'm slipping in the odd very small half glass...

HellKat · 24/04/2006 08:38

Morning all.
Personally I can't stomach booze in any shape or form with this pg. I had some mini Budweisers in the fridge and twice I've opened one up, taken one mouthful and it's gone straight down the sink. I'm longing after "proper" booze though lol(strong stuff) so once lo's born Think I'll be treating myself to a voddie & coke Wink
How's everyone today?

Not sure if anyone saw my post from a day or two ago but remember CupCakes who used to be here? Well..................... She's now on the Due in Dec thread!!! Grin I was so pleased to see that.

pol25 · 24/04/2006 10:05

My DP is mourning my drinking self as now have prob one/two glasses of wine or small beers a week and he is Sad Says he can't wait til bubba is here so I am back to eating whatever he fancies- rather that only what I can stomach and drinking a little more! Must admit that a bottle of wine would go down much nicer that two piddly glasses!
We have our scan on the 26th and i'll be 23 weeks. Can't wait!
Anyone else having strong braxton hicks??? Woke up last night at a quarter to one with a bad one and even had to get up out of bed and wander around- never had them this bad with DD! Anyone else feeling like this or has done with previous bubbas???

HellKat · 24/04/2006 10:42

I've had them all weekend, really low down and in cervix. luckily they're not like normal ones so I'm not panicking. Think lo's shifted position hence more pain. Lol substituted back pain for fake contractions.

TopBanana · 24/04/2006 10:51

OMG I'm in so much pain I just wanna cry Sad
I don't know what it is, its like backache but round the sides too. It kills me to walk up stairs or even turn over in bed and theres no chance I can lift dd Sad
Thought this didn't happen till the end.

compo · 24/04/2006 10:52

tassis - i have a small glass of wine if I go out for a meal. I don't think it's a problem if you drink it with a meal and drink some water with the meal as well.
