aufaniae i need to decide re: uni too, i am about to start my second year of a part time Masters.

I am hoping to attend all but two lectures, with how this works with due date, then hopefully delay my dissertation hand in by at least 6 months, maybe 9.

I'm not sure if uni and work will let me, but if they do, this is what I will aim for.

I am desperate for my scan but no date yet! Not even had booking in appt...

toobreathless · 12/09/2012 11:52

angeltattoo & aufaniae I do not envy you having to decide what to do with your studies. I currently work fulltime but will be returning part time. I deliberately have a small gap as I will only have worked 9 months when I go back on maternity leave. I fancied two mat leaves on full pay :)

aufaniae I wouldn't tell them when your job hunting, I think occasionally you need to be a bit selfish. It would depend on the employer, I would feel bad if it were a smaller business. Just be aware your mat leave entitlement will be affected but I guess being a student you wouldn't be entitled to much at the moment anyway?

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 11:56

angel do you have an idea if your uni are generally supportive about pregnancy? (I mean they should be, but I what happens in practice is what matters!)

I'm sure you're not the first to get pregnant half way through!

And there are laws about not discriminating because of pregnancy, there must be a way to let you complete the course.

Am I right that this is your first DC? I hope I'm not stepping out of line to say I reckon you might need a back-up plan in case you find you just can't study with a young baby. Do you think you'd want to take a year out if you knew they'd let you?

It might well be possible, I know someone with her own business (working from home) who managed to keep it running with only 2 weeks off when the baby was born. I don't know how she did it!

But personally I would find it absolutely impossible to write a dissertation with a baby so young. I tried to do some freelance when DS was about 5 months, and after a very frustrating week, achieving exactly nothing, I had to admit I simply couldn't do it.

The main problem was I thought I could work with the baby there. But for me at least, that proved totally impossible. My friend who ran her own business worked at night and while the baby slept, but she's a rare -freak- amazing person. I just couldn't. I was so sleep deprived, I needed to sleep myself while DS was sleeping!

If you do have to do your dissertation with a little one, I'd highly recommend carving out specific time when you study, and getting childcare (whether it's your DP, mum, friend, CM, nanny) to give you that space to study, as if you were going to work.

I hope that's helpful and doesn't sound as if I'm trying to put you off! It may well be totally doable, I reckon the key is having the right support. DP was working long hours at the time. I guess it might have been different for me if he'd been home more.

I wonder if anyone else has experience of studying with a little one?

Sent you a PM about some stuff my tutor said btw :)

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 12:09

toobreathless as a student I get exactly nothing! No maternity, no SMP, nothing. My income will be child tax credits and child benefit, that's it! It's a little scary actually! But we have a lodger, which will help, and should manage, just.

Anyone who employs me now won't have any responsibility to me pregnancy-wise (except health and safety stuff).

I'm only applying for temporary jobs. I did take on a permanent job before when I knew I could only work there for 8 months, and I felt so guilty! (It was a charity, with the nicest people ever working there).

If I don't tell them I'm pregnant, how do I explain the time off uni? I'm a bit stumped there! I've been getting good grades so I'll want to talk about uni in an interview. (Apologies for stealth boast!)

Do you think employers will mind I'm pregnant if they're not liable for maternity pay?

JaquelineHyde · 12/09/2012 12:12

aufaniae I am due to start my masters in Social Work next week, it's a full time 2 year masters course and I have no idea what I am going to do.

We are in full time lectures (9-5 Mon-Fri) up until Christmas and then we go on full time work placements for the rest of the academic year as well as having to complete our academic work.

We have been warned over and over again that this is likey to be the most intense/difficult thing we have ever done!! Shock

I have no idea what I am going to do, deferring isn't an option for me because if I defer I will lose my funding and when I return I would have to fund the entire Masters myself which I could never, ever do. So I either qualify now or never and waste the last 7 years of my life working towards this Sad

Not good timing on our side at all!

I suspect I will work up until I give birth Mid April take a few weeks off and then return for 5-6 weeks to finish year one and then have 3 months off over summer (obviously I will be doing my diss aswell but I'm fine with that I quite like doing a diss)

I'm not going to talk to Uni until I'm about 14 weeks so I know I'm in the clear and I have managed to settle into uni ok.

Sorry for the mamouth post Smile

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 12:47

JacquelineHyde That's an absolute bugger about the funding. How very annoying!

How are you assessed? Is it mainly project work or are there any exams? (I'm guessing Masters are mostly project work aren't they?)

When are you meant to carry on your placement work till, is there a minimum of weeks you have to do? I wonder if you might be able to tack some of the weeks from year one into year two? (Just thinking aloud).

Like I said to angel, you can't be the first to get pregnant on the course. There must be things they can do to help you complete the course, surely?

I hope your tutors are supportive (you would hope so, in a caring profession!) but if you feel they're not being as supportive as they might be, it could be an idea to acquaint yourself with student services, I've found them to be great at my uni (I wonder if you're going to the same one - is it the one with campuses in our town?)

I'm sure you'll find a way :)

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 12:49

Sorry Jaqueline an extra "c" keeps slipping in when I write your name Blush

Right, enough procrastinating, I should really be getting on with some work myself!!

trying2bpos · 12/09/2012 12:58

Disaster pink stuff on my cream cheese!

I started to do what I would normally do and just scrape it off but then got paranoid it was something that would be bad whilst PG so now it is scraped and in fridge! Confused

Anyone know what it is and whether I should just bin it to be on safe side?

Argh a bagel jusn't isn't the same without it! Sad

HaveALittleFaith · 12/09/2012 13:14

Confused pos I wouldn't eat it! Is there a shop near you you can nip to?

I'm booked in for my flu jab at 10 weeks. Nothing about it being unsafe and I booked it at the same time as my booking appointment.

Sympathies for those of you studying/deferring! I was about to apply to my dissertation to convert my PGDip to an MSc when I found out I was pregnant so that's gone on the back burner. I would definitely seek advice about student support and how to work your courses. Definitely not the first ones to have babies at uni!

7+5 now

JaquelineHyde · 12/09/2012 13:20

aufaniae no not that uni. My BA hons was done at that uni but my Masters is at Sussex.

We are assessed through course work and placements. We have to complete a minimum amount of days in placement to gain the professional qualification, so any time I am out has to be made up otherwise I don't qualify. In the second year we are in placement from the first day of the academic year straight through to the final day!

My due date is smack bang in the middle of when all my essays and presentations are due for year one and 5 weeks before the end of my first placement. I have thought maybe I could head for earlier deadline for the assessment work and then begin my year two placements 5 weeks earlier?

God knows I'm sure it will be fine. I got my degree with three children at home who were 1, 2 and 3 when I started and 4, 5 and 6 when I finished. So I'm not worried about having a baby at home for the 2nd year it's just prganising the end of the first year!

trying No idea about pink stuff on cream cheese, I would have thrown it away as well.

ratbagcatbag · 12/09/2012 13:49

Can I ask another daft question please? When I have my scan, will I hear a heartbeat as soon as they put the thingy on my stomach? If I don't hear one straight away is that bad?? Help. Still worrying about mmc even though everything appears to be progressing fine, willbe my first scan. :)

JaquelineHyde · 12/09/2012 13:53

The ones I have been at they don't tend to have any sound on at all.

I wouldn't worry either way the sonographer will know exactly what they are looking for and you will just be staring at this little miracle on the screen.

somewherebecomingrain · 12/09/2012 14:27

jacquelinehyde you are superwoman! i did manage to do an MA whilst working full time but three kids and a whole degree? woah nelly.

ratbagcatbag there's no sound when they first put the thing on your stomach.

xxx

OMG - this article about 'pregzilla' is me - anyone else?

Dannilion · 12/09/2012 14:35

Wow....I thought I was so alone with the whole uni thing!

I'm just finising up my 2nd year at uni. Our cohort is the last cohort to be doing this particular style of post-registration training. (Am studying post-reg Mental Health Nursing @ Brighton uni). Baby is due in April obviously, my 3rd year technically starts in February. In an ideal would I would just defer for a year...

But, nothing is that easy.

The NHS have supposedly pulled all funding for student nurses and changed the course so much that it would be difficult to just 'fall back a year'. For the past 2 years my lecturers have jokingly said "keep your legs closed girls....There's noting for you to come back to!". But when questioned the lecturers have said they would have to come to some arrangement. They can't make you choose between education or baby...... right?

I get a bursary and in previous cohorts, mums have been given this througout their maternity leave. But my cohort is the last ever and the entire world has changed (apparently). I am pooing my pants. Have dug my heels in so hard with this course, including travelling 4 hours a day for placements Angry

Anyways, I'm not gonna tell the uni til my 12 week scan. I don't even know what the point of my waffling is, I just need to offload I think. Am fed up of being stuck in the 'waiting for this to be real so I can sort my life out' limbo.

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 15:02

Dannilion we're at the same uni! Sent you a PM about Student Services and stuff.

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 15:03

JaquelineHyde that's truly amazing, you are hardcore!
I have every faith you'll manage it this year.

Hats off to you (no pun intended Grin)

usernamegoeshere · 12/09/2012 15:11

I just finished uni, but didn't find a job yet... bit worrying but you know, hardly anyone has loads of money but loads have babies so I am sure it will be fine.

Dannilion does that mean student nurses won't get any bursary at all now? I knew they were scrapping the diploma but I kind of assumed the bursary would remain. Bit harsh considering the work student nurses have to do.

I am so cold, I can't believe its only September no idea how I will make it through an entire winter.

JaquelineHyde · 12/09/2012 16:02

Dannilion that's the problem I'm faced with as the NHS bursary for social work training is expected to be pulled all together as of next year so if I defer my place to next year there will be no funding, so I have no choice but to complete my first year. I'm just hoping the pregnancy fog doesn't hit!! Grin

All us students should meet up for a drink as it sounds like we are all very local (well I know you are Aufaniae Grin )

aufaniae · 12/09/2012 16:05

Great idea Jaqueline, I'm in! :)

CamelKnees · 12/09/2012 16:20

Afternoon all
This is going to sound a bit selfish but I'm so relieved to hear about others work/studying worries. I'm dreading going public with this pregnancy as I know work will outwardly be all supportive but will inwardly be thinking "couldn't you just wait one more year? We've only just got everything sorted". Its been making me quite glum but do you know what sod them. This baby is very much wanted so they'll just have to deal with it. Hope you ladies get it all sorted re your courses (also a bit well jel of your meeting up !)

CamelKnees · 12/09/2012 16:22

Ps - i survived the tilty train this morning and don't feel half as bad this afternoon which is weird as they make me feel sick at the best of times. Maybe the train and the MS cancel each other out like two minuses?

angeltattoo · 12/09/2012 16:54

Hi ladies,

Nice to know I'm not the only one!

I totally agree, i'd rather get as much done before baby arrives, i should at least get my modules done so get a PGDip, and then after mat leave I may be able to complete my dissertation.

A pregnant friend at uni said they were really good/supportive with her.

Best laid plans and all that!!!

HaveALittleFaith · 12/09/2012 17:14

I have some issues where I work too. I had to spend all last year with my colleague telling me to keep my legs crossed because it would be 'inconvenient' to the service Hmm all the while I was TTC! I've been covering for her while she does her MSc. she's now coming back for 6 months but may well do her PHd starting in March and expect me to cover her....thing is, I want the job! I imagine applying but then going on mat leave immediately! I am dreading telling that particular colleague..,

toobreathless · 12/09/2012 17:24

Dannilion they CANNOT discriminate against you for having a baby. Your uni need to be very careful on that one. You are entitled to take maternity leave & it is their responsibility to make appropriate provision for your final year.

For those planning (or forced by circumstances) to study with a small baby it can be done as JH says. It's really tricky though as you don't know how you will feel or what your baby will be like. I sat my big professional exams at 28 weeks pregnant & when DD was 11weeks old. That was ok & not too stressful but DD was a very 'easy' baby.

I'm planning on taking six months of maternity leave starting at 32 weeks BUT I'll be going back 50% rather than fulltime so I don't feel the baby will be particularly missing out. DD (now 16 months) has been in fulltime nursery since I went back to work three months ago. I worked until 39 weeks with DD but feel that I owe it to her to take more time to settle her into her new routine of nursery two days a week before the new baby arrives. I have to work a complete month so it's either 32 or 36 weeks.

CamelKnees try not to feel bad about work, you sound lovely & I bet they will just be really happy for you.
