My old flatmate is Norwegian and it always sounds sucmh a lovely language to listen to! Fecking impossible to understand though..

I'm qualified to teach english as a foreign language and love the idea of maybe doing a swap or something with a foreign student over here - I teach them english and they teach our child a foreign language. I think having another language these days is so vital, unfortunately mine only extends to higher (scottish a level equivelent) german...

We also have the possibility of moving to norway with dhs job in a couple of years once the bridge project has finished yw. His company operates in the UK, Norway, Germany and Canada if baby brain remembers correctly

Bluetinkerbell · 31/08/2012 21:30

DD1's godmother is Swedish and I followed a Swedish language course for 3 years :)
Love Scandinavian names too...

All the talk of getting private rooms after labour has bought back my experience of being on a ward after labour. I hated it. There was always a crying baby somewhere. If it wasn't yours it was somebody elses. I swore that if I had another baby I would get a private room. It isn't guaranteed that you can get one at my hosp but I really think I'll ask for one if there is one available. The mother opposite me belonged to a real car crash of a family. In fact I found it quite entertaining, it was like having jeremy kyle on tap 24/7. The hospital is strict with visiting but the mother was on the phone all times of the night to the father of the child effing and blinding. So I'd miss out on that "fun" but I think I'd take the hit for a bit of peace and quiet.

I did the virtual tour of my maternity unit at the hospital last night. I have to go to a different hospital this time as the maternity unit has closed where I gave birth to DD. I'm actually quite looking forward to the labour. There must be something wrong with me!

TheDetective · 31/08/2012 22:04

Shelly, you need to be seen, please ring the triage number, if not tonight, first thing in the morning. Promise?

YellowWellies · 31/08/2012 22:07

Oh gawd Eliza that sounds like the NICU where my niece was - these huge stunned babies born to chain smoking Mums who were in the unit for just a few hours and were constantly being visited by the cast of Shameless, none of whom saw fit to actually use the hand sanitiser and all of whom thought ogling the other babies on the unit a kind of sport - tapping the glass on the incubators of other peoples' babies and coming out with lovely comments on how the prem babies looked like skin and bone, and not fancying their chances.

Gaaaaaaahhhhh I won't go onto my usual rant here of how if I were a benign dictator I would force people to either be able to vote on Big Brother / X Factor tat or in a general election, but not both - but lets just say this place reinforced that.

evening all

apple we will be trying to raise a bilingual child.
when i was a child i only learnt to speak english when i went to nursery, as DM spoke to me in punjabi at home all the time. however even though i spoke and still speak punjabi to her its not that great as english took over as my natural first language.
what i am going to try is to speak to my child in punjabi all the time, i live with PIL so i know they will always speak in punjabi, so if i slip up its not to bad. my theory is my child will learn to speak english eventually anyway [as i did].
i think the hardest thing for me will be that i speak to my DH in english!

i think maybe you don't speak ur husbands language? so i would try and pick up on simple words, ask your husband to speak in his language and u speak in english and some farsi words. try to do counting in farsi as well. my SIL counted down the stairs every morning from when they were born in punjabi, so the kids can count, but then they never learnt anything else.

agree with others about getting as many books/cds as possible.

this is something i give alot of thought to! already spotted a few childrens books in the local temple.

on a side note trip to spa was lush!

Elizadoesdolittle · 31/08/2012 22:36

Hehe YW that sounds exactly like this mum. She was always popping out for a fag when the midwives weren't looking. She had strep b and they kept needing to monitor her. And I clearly remember a conversation she had with her mum about getting a babysitter for the wednesday so she could go out and wet the babies head. The grandmum said she couldn't do it as she was going to watch avater. Imagine asking for a babysitter so you could leave your 4 day old baby as you wanted to go out on the piss. Unbelievable. She was on her 2nd baby, both by different fathers and she had already split up with the dad of number 2. Baby had a lovely leopard skin baby grow on and a pink fluffy handband. You just couldn't have made it up.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 31/08/2012 22:48

Pants evening DD2 has a horrible aggressive rash that is sore and has got her in a real state. She hasn't got a temp or anything like like just this bumpy red itchy rash. Have got her on Piriton but it only lasts about 4. Hours then she is distraught.

To top it all off we signed the contract on the rental today using a online signing tool but at 9:30 I had an email from the website saying the subsequent signatory I.e the landlord has rejected the contract. We complete on this house next Friday and I have visions of being pregnant and homeless. And why do things things always happen when there is no one to talk to to find out what's going on. dH is out. Sad Sad

horseylady · 31/08/2012 22:48

Oh dear......maybe I will enquire about a private room?!!

I'll wait until I feel less hormonal but seeing how I've spent the last hour crying it's not looking good!! Just very fed up of comments from people then mother acted very hurt when I snapped at her earlier.

Hoping dh doesn't bring fil home or both of them are also likeky to get both barrels. In fact I might just get in the bath, try to remove the baby from under my ribs and back so I'm not in as much pain.

I have no idea how I'm going to cope with labour or being a mother. if one more person tells me how much I'm going to struggle and how difficult it's going to be I might scream!!

How the feck do I know how I'm going to cope?!! I've never done it before?!!

Rant over, sorry just shattered, pissed off and in pain!! 15 hour days do this too you.....

applepieinthesky · 31/08/2012 22:58

Looks like we will have lots of clever bilingual babies Smile

No GT I don't speak DP's language and only understand a little bit. I've said he can teach me at the same time. I should make more of an effort really.

horseylady · 31/08/2012 23:03

Ours will be English only lol!! Were both scientists so very little hope for ours on the language side!! Good luck to those of you who go down the bi lingual route!!

Sophiathesnowfairy · 31/08/2012 23:04

horseylady sorry you are having a shit evening too. Thanks hope you are wallowing in the bath.

Skoggy · 31/08/2012 23:09

Ooo... some Scandi-fan here! Good oh Grin.

Like MissMummy, I'm a TEFL trained person. I love languages. When my DH asked me to move to Sweden when we were newly dating, I jumped at the chance and I don't regret my 4 years in Sweden at all. Its so much easier to learn a language if you are totally submersed in it. Prior to going there, I only spoke some pidgeon French and Spanish from school days but now I'm proud to say that my second language really is Swedish. But it isn't an easy language to learn.

Once DD2 arrives and gets to about a year or so, we are going to properly start sitting the girls down and having "Daddy time" and watch movies / tv shows in Swedish as a family and get some posters sent over from Sweden so that they get as good a grasp on their other language as possible. Couple that with cheap flights with Ryanair to see DH's family, I'm hoping that everything works out fine.

TheDetective · 31/08/2012 23:19

Marks and Spencer have some nice maternity stuff on their website Shock

I am turning in to my mother god help me

I have £20 in m&s vouchers thanks to RBS taking last months loan payment twice (I didn't even notice til a couple of weeks ago, and even then, I hadn't yet complained, although they did return it a day after they took it for the 2nd time!) now I dunno what to buyyyyyy! If it was yesterday, I could have bought DS's bloody school shoes with it. Sods law huh? It's so rare I buy anything from there these days!

I'm sat here with a disgusting white top on, which is covered in my tea. It's shameful! I can't get close enough to my plate! Bump seems bigger in the last few days!

I had my 31 week appt this morning, and all well, baby in the oblique lie, bloody bugger! Midwife agreed he's difficult to palpate thanks to the fat and she pushed his head towards the pelvis to encourage him to get in the right place... but OWWWW! It hurt!

Supervisor of Midwives is coming out next Friday to discuss birth plan/homebirth Grin omg, it's all systems go now! Scary scary stuff!

horseylady · 31/08/2012 23:35

Detective the mw said something about the babies head being in the right hemi pelvis? I think she meant socket? Bloody hurt me too all the prodding? Hemi pelvis could be the wrong terminology btw I could have been talking to a dr about a separate issue at work and the hemi just stuck? Assume it's not an issue? She also said he was under some ligament so sorry for hurting me by pressing on it. His Back was on the left. He's now lying with his back on the right again. Under my ribs kicking my back.

TheDetective · 31/08/2012 23:41

Never heard of that term horsey! I'm not sure but sounds like oblique from your description! The lie is as follows - long is up or down (either head or bum), transverse is lying across ways, and oblique is in between the two!

No, it's not an issue! Position isn't an issue til 36/37 weeks! Quite sure mine is doing a backwards flip as I type! They still have a lot of room!

Iheartpasties · 01/09/2012 01:49

I am feeling tired, after a full nights sleep. Stupid! I want to go out, so I must go have a shower.

StuntNun · 01/09/2012 07:33

Horsey don't worry about coping when the baby's here, you will just get on with it. I'm not a very maternal person and I'd never even held a baby before I had my first so I had no clue about changing nappies (the first few leaked before I got the hang of it) or burping or how to put on a babygro. We like to think we humans are so intelligent and highly evolved and everything but in reality the instinct to nurture and care for our children overtakes everthing else. I won't lie to you, the first six weeks can be difficult as you get used to your baby and find your new routines but it doesn't take long to accomodate to the new little person in your life.

Iheartpasties · 01/09/2012 07:38

Oh yes I second what stunt has said. Don't worry and dont let other people be negative, ignore ignore ignore. I didn't have any experience of babies prior to having dd, and I just muddled along and it all worked out :) we are all human and we all make mistakes but trust me you will be trying your best for that little baby and thats all that counts.

Iheartpasties · 01/09/2012 07:41

I am having a little tear listening to Ellie Golding singing Elton Johns Your song. It was being played on radio one when I was pregnant with DD and the lyrics "How wonderful life is now you're in the world". Sob! This little belly dweller just did a wonderful kick while I had my hand on my bump. Sob!

Catbag · 01/09/2012 08:17

It's September. Good grief, how DID that happen? My youngest starts school on Tuesday and the elder two are another year on in their secondary and primary schools (yrs 9 and 5 respectively). I'm feeling very old today!

DesperateHousewife21 · 01/09/2012 08:23

Arghh I've got bloody constipation! I'm going to get prunes and kiwis when I go shopping today! I'm sure it's causing BHs too, so uncomfy :(

We're going out to lunch with friends today which will be good, ds was awful last night so we don't feel like doing much else today.

DesperateHousewife21 · 01/09/2012 08:24

X post- I was going to say happy sept! We can say two months to go now, seems alot closer Grin

Catbag · 01/09/2012 08:27

I feel your pain DH21. I've been suffering horrific constipation, somewhat exacerbated by the fact that (TMI ALERT) one of the babies I think is sat on my bowel- this means the movements are coming out hard as rock and FLAT, rupturing everything in their path. I have been eating lentils twice a day to try and rectify this appallingly painful state of affairs!

horseylady · 01/09/2012 08:59

Dh21 I feel for you!!! Since starting on iron I've been taking lactulose just to help. It's so uncomfy and I was bleeding a lot too :( seems to help me?

Thanks for your kind words. I've got no doubt that it won't be hard, I think as it's getting closer I'm just starting to think more and am more aware of what is happening. Still hardly slept last night and dh moved into the spare room again!! Think it's maybe time to start slowing down a bit!!
