dameflamingo · 17/08/2012 11:16

hello everyone - so many posts to catch up on but am looking forward to catching up with everyone's news properly. From my skim reading:

cheese toasties ...drooling like Homer Simpson
alcohol free wine ...expensive considering it is seriously cack. Grape juice and sparkling water is a cheaper and nicer alternative in my humble opinion. IT snot so sugar laden as schloer ( I admit I'm a schladdict - once I open a bottle it all goes in one sitting! they must put crack in it or something).
scans so exciting to hear about the positive experiences people have had. Am due my NT scan within the next -9 days but awaiting the letter and have a feeling it will not come in time.
midwives mine is a peach - was offered option of home birth as well as two hospitals which surprised me as this is my first baby. Anyone got any experience of this?
flutters and bumps I have certainly been feeling something and I swear I can tell when the baby wakes up or goes to sleep as my mood seems to alter sure this is not reall possible but I will stick to my romantic notion. Three days ago my tummy popped out...I now have a tiny little bump that seems to get a bit bigger ( water retention) towards the end of the day. agree joJo its so exciting!
change of due date reiterating to all with an earlier due date - don't you dare run off from this thread.
budget maternity I too am planning on an austerity style effort. I'm horrified that the words wedding and baby seem to enable the addition of another nought on a price tag! Baby sales, ebay and homemade all the way I can!

I heard just some very sad ntales today (for some reason people share such horror stories about other pregnant women with you) and despite my intention of not listening to these kind of tales it made me a bit anxious...so I skimmed through your posts and am now feeling a lot calmer - thank you all for keeping this thread so vibrant. I know that awful things can and do happen but today I quite selfishly can just about cope with hearing about cheese and pickle toasties and little fluffy kittens!

mandasand · 17/08/2012 11:30

hey lovelies - and thanks for the 'feel better soon's! actually doctor just phoned me with the results of my bloods taken yesterday (bloody hell that was quick!). I'm very low on potassium (weirdly, as I eat so much fruit and veg and am not vomiting AND I'm borderline with an underactive thyroid! (I was overactive years ago, but got it sorted with meds.) heading down to the surgery now for potassium supplements (not in pregnacare tablets, I learn, despite it being so essential) and to book in a blood test in 2 weeks time to see how things are doing. Hmm, maybe one of these are related to extreme tiredness? Sorry for me-me-me post! x

zoeymlucas · 17/08/2012 11:31

Now have a desire for a cheese and ham toasty my mouth is actually watering a bit! I seem to be hungry all the time and when I eat take 5 mouth fulls and full then an hour later an starving again!
Pips am very jealous of your shopping trip with DH sounds like an amazing day out Smile

Jojo goods news on the nausea free morning long may it continue

confuddledDOTcom · 17/08/2012 13:25

Hello everyone, I had planned on catching up but my laptop broke two weeks ago and I've been using my husband's when I get chance. He's now away in Jersey for 10 days and the one he's left me to use is a laptop pretending to be a desktop so having to sit at the table to use it which isn't too good with the PGP (I'm back on codydramolSad)

I had a blood test on Tuesday to make sure my Clexane levels are OK, considering I'd already taken it that day my blood was giving them grief and they had to use both arms, doing the tests twice because they're worried the one might be too clotted. Asked if I'd been booked in yet and I have! I have an appointment for Wednesday. CMW is coming to see me on Saturday.

I'll come back when the kids are in bed and try to catch up.

theTramp · 17/08/2012 15:25

So cross.

Saw midwife for first time today who was lovely. So last 4 weeks I've had bleeding but Dr didn't feel scan was required. MW thinks I should've been sent directly for scan. Get to A&E and nurse & Dr agree with MF but early scanning department won't scan anyone after midday or over weekend. So..

  1. another work day disrupted now

  2. wasn't worried, now worried

  3. 3 whole days before I find out if all is well

I'm livid. And a bit weepy. Bloody hormones.

sundaesundae · 17/08/2012 15:32

Oh Tramp, how cruel of them, that all seems massively unfair.

Try not to worry over the weekend, can you do something to take your mind off of things?

Lexiindisguise · 17/08/2012 15:39

Oh Tramp, really feel for you, had early bleeding too & it was so worrying waiting for the scan. I hope all is OK. Make sure you get some rest!

confuddledDOTcom · 17/08/2012 15:40

After midday??? What sort of crazy policy is that? I think I'd have made so much fuss they'd have to sort something out - I've also had pregnancies where I wasn't so strong and wouldn't, but last time I decided to take charge of everything. Is there anyway for you to get back there? Or call the hospital switchboard, ask for a Supervisor of Midwives and ask them to arrange something, hopefully if you can get one they'll kick enough bums to get it moving.

Sheldonella · 17/08/2012 15:41

Tramp I had the same problem and my EPU refused to scan me. I ended up having a private one in the end that showed all is well. I hope you have a relaxing weekend and get some reassurance.

theTramp · 17/08/2012 17:16

Thanks all.

Conf - I kicked up big fuss but unit stood firm and as it was 4pm by this point (whole day gone!!!) it was too late to do much else.

Dr took blood, did urine test and looked at cervix and said she didn't think I shoul worry BUT she was sorry without a scan she couldn't give me definitive peace of mind.

So MrM and I have decided we should take it all as positive & if Monday brings weeping so be it. But right now all indicators suggest weeping not needed. It's just I'm in high risk bracket of MC so the MW is being cautious.

I'm bloody furious at Dr surgery though. Everyone, every bloody one else said I should've gone for another scan. 4 times I've called to speak to Dr to see I I should and 4 times no, see how it goes, nothing anyone can do yada yada. Grrrr

pinkpeony4 · 17/08/2012 17:45

Hi there

Just a quickie to say scan was all fab. Baby was wriggling around and got a low risk result with my nt. Due date is now 1st March.

Will try and write more late but have to sort out my boys.

Hope everyone else is Ok? Soooo relieved here!!

Smile Smile Smile

pinkpeony4 · 17/08/2012 18:31

Tramp that is terrible. It wouldn't have taken anytime at all for them to have a quick look. I hope they can see you on Monday. Can you self refer? in our EPU you can just turn up between 8-11 and they will scan you.

One thing my scan did show up was a low lying placenta (Placenta Praevia posterior). Has anyone else had this? The sonographer said that I must take things really easy and not to do too much lifting. Easier said than done with 3 ds's under 5... hopefully it moves but never had that before.

Whoever said about movements. I swear I have been feeling tiny flutterings since 9/10 weeks. I wasn't sure whether they were wind or movements but I do think they were movements. I googled it and it is possible, especially in subsequent pregnancies. My others were all more around the 16-18 week mark because I had an anterior placenta.

HaitchJay · 17/08/2012 18:45

Afaik the placenta can move but they monitor it if it hadn't by late pg.

theTramp · 17/08/2012 19:09

Peony - fab news so pleased for you.

Thanks all. I'll update on Monday ...

Em2010 · 17/08/2012 19:30

Just a quickie. tramp so sorry you've been messed around do badly. I'm sure scan on Monday will show everything is fine though.

pink when I had my last scan at 11 weeks they said the placenta was low lying but this was very common around this stage and it usually shifts by 20 week scan. Here's hoping anyway! Really pleased to hear it all went well.

pipsicles · 17/08/2012 22:14

Really pleased to hear your good scan news Pink and sorry to hear about the scan anxieties, Tramp. It is so sucky that they have to stop scanning at certain times. When I had my mmc at Easter, I finally convinced myself I was right to be worrying on the Easter Saturday and plucked up the guts to ring nhs direct and go to a walk in centre (we were visiting PiLs up north, where we are now, so not registered with a dr) and I had to be referred, but couldn't be seen until the Tuesday because of all the bank holidays. The wait was agonising, so I feel your pain, but I am sure you'll have a happier outcome than I did.

Shopping was lovely today, although I am mightily pissed off with stupid Next. There is a MASSIVE store just near Cheshire Oaks and I was desperate to go in and buy a long baggy top to wear with leggings, but from the maternity range so that it will last a bit longer (long mat tops now become short ones when v pg). So I go in, full of optimism and excitement at being able to treat myself whilst DH is busily occupying himself in currys or similar, only to find that they have no maternity range. Queue unreasonable hormones kicking in - I snapped at the poor woman on the changing rooms saying some thing like, "not even in a store as big as this!" in my best incredulous voice and she tried to help by saying that Chester used to do a range, but not anymore - like that is helpful! I was so mad I wouldn't even let the baby section distract me, but stormed out, found DH in currys and promptly burst into tears! DH tried not to laugh at me, but it must have been funny! Did find some lovely cheap maternity things in H&M though, so probably happier in the long run!

We also had our first trip to the cinema in over 18 months! We last saw The Kings Speech a week or two before DS was born! We saw Ted this time, which was quite funny actually, but did make me cry.

Sorry for offloading my pg hormones on you all Blush I'm guessing you're all having exciting Friday evenings as there appears to be hardly any chat going on tonight! I'm off to bed now anyway. Sleep well all :)

lannyshrops · 17/08/2012 23:05

Hey all!
pip used to live near c.oaks. lethal for the wallet!!!!! I can't believe next and to be honest can't believe so many shops which I thought would have maternity sections and don't, well not by me anyway!
I'm having a lovely Friday evening, can't believe I'm still up at 11pm! Rock and roll!Got home from work absolutely shattered to find DH had done the housework, shopping, ironing and had dinner in the oven! I promptly burst into tears!!
Here's to a fab weekend off to you all! Xxx

ATourchOfInsanity · 17/08/2012 23:10

Hi everyone!
Pink so glad your scan went well Smile Am amazed they do the Taga in a shop in London, on their site it says you can't get them apart from America now. Mothercare used to stock them or something? Do you have a link to the store in London as it would save us a trip to Holland!

Living in a suburban town sucks with maternity wear too pips. Our H&M did maternity wear (teeny section of about 2 rails) until they refurbed to get more space...then according to the guy at the counter, stopped stocking maternity as there was not enough demand! Every other person I know here is pg! We now have about 5 items per season in Topshop and a sale rail of trousers size 18+ in Dorothy Perkins. Hardly anything to get excited about! Luckily I have summer things from last pg, but worrying about winter. Especially shoes as my feet were MASSIVE last time and worried nothing will fit that I will be able to get on without assistance at any rate

Confuddled hello! It is I, LeClair! We were on the last pg thread for July together, so I am hoping you know who I am Wink Good to see you here again. Having identical laptop issues and am on OH's Apple, which drops connection every 10/15mins so have to be quick!

Speak soon everyone!

mmmmsleep · 18/08/2012 05:15

Thank you for so many supportive posts re the scan. I'm also now wondering why I had it...knowing I wouldn't have amino or terminate. I know someone who had surprise baby with downs despite low screening risk so my theory was I'd rather know before to get my head around it before the post natal exhaustion and hormones kick in but now thinking 6m of ignorance is bliss...especially as I don't know anything other than a statistical risk!
Nuchal thickness was half that of ds but Hcg blood test was v high so that put the risk up.hopefully as scans go on we'll gwt more reassurance. More worried about the heart problems etc that go with downs than downs itself. Ds has health problems so I would rather not have to watch another baby being wheeled away for operations.breaks my mummy heart! Whatever happens we'll cope and baby will be loved. Excited to get to see dd in 3 weeks to see if I'm right and she is a girl!!

Ds up at 4am...still trying to get him back down. The cheese toasted talk isn't helping me, I may have to go to kitchen for a snack! I'm craving pepperoni pizzas and eating constantly.so much for trying to keep off the xs weight gain this pregnancy! Right I think he's finally asleep...off in search of cheese.
Good luck to those with scans this week!

FloweryBoots · 18/08/2012 07:50

What a lot to read, and all instantly forgotten! PIL have been with us since Wed night to look after DS whilst Childminders on holiday. Bless tehm they have cleaned and cooked and washed and ironed for us.

Fab news to all those with happy scans.

I'm now off work for a week adn a half, bliss. So releived.

Only thing I can remember I was going to comment on specifically was someone with thrush. Natural yoghurt, as someone mentioned is supposed to help - both eaten and applied topically (never actually tried that, sounds messy!). The reason is the 'friendly bacteria' so anythign with that in could help a little. I had terrible thrush in my breasts when first started breast feeding DS and got the bacteria in tablet form to take huge doses, and because I hate yoghurt. Also cutting out sugar and yeast from your diet. Swabbing with water with a little vinigar was recomended to me for breasts, but might sting! Idea is to change the pH of the skin so the infection can't live in that environment. 1 table spoon of vinigar in one cup of warm water. Can't remember anything else I found. If you go to GP they may still give you the tablet. It's not liscenced for breast feeding mothers but I did end up with a 4 week course of it when breast feeding as couldn't shift the thrush any other way and was in agony, and DS not feeding properly. Don't know if it is too much of a risk for when you're pregnant though. Hope it gets better soon. Oh, and if you're allergic to canistan, can you try daktarin instead? I had both for breast thrush so might be same for, ahem, other regions.

HaitchJay · 18/08/2012 07:54

Maternity clothes- we don't have ant shops that do maternity ( actually any proper clothes shops) in my town, nearest two are hunt the item. Someone on another thread recommended matalan do will try there but last time did it all on line apart from what I got in NYC ( if you go to America - pea in the pod is the most comfortable mat wear I've ever worn!)
Am worried about shoes though as I wore flip flops through the last one as I couldn't bend down or walk.

Em2010 · 18/08/2012 08:02

mmmsleep good luck for those future tests. Although I know they won't be able to tell If baby has ds or not at least it will be able to put your mind at rest a bit if you see baby has no heart conditions. Good news that the nuchal thickness wasn't too big.

I have never been to Cheshire Oaks!! I cannot believe I have missed out on this shopping Mecca! We occasionally head to the Trafford Centre for a shopping treat but I can see we're going to have to venture a bit further! pips your story did make me smile! Sorry! That is so like me at the moment! I told the man who runs our village post office that he was very rude the other day. He is, and was being especially so to me on Thursday. Everybody in the village thinks so but I bet I was the first to say it! I'm normally a very polite little mouse!!! Honestly!

Hope everyone has nice weekends planned. lanny v jealous of your husband. What a legend. Don't think Mr Em knows how to even turn on the oven.

We have BiL coming for lunch. Can't stand the man but dh adores him and we hardly ever see him so I hope I can hold my tongue!!

pipsicles · 18/08/2012 08:49

That sounds a bit grim Em. I hope all goes well for you .

Glad you're feeling the benefits of your PiLs too, Flowery - lucky you!

Mmmsleep - cheese is my vice too, although I'm pleased that I'm finding it easier to resist at the moment. That said, DH did present me with a small cheese and marmite toastie for lunch yesterday, which was much appreciated! I was wondering though, if you are craving it, whether you have a bit of a need for calcium? Maybe you could try milk/milkshake/hot chocolate or yoghurt as a less fattening option if you're worried about the weight gain? I can't remember how far along you are, but I'm 11 weeks today (woohoo! One more week to go!) and my app was telling me this morning that the baby's cartilage is turning to bone and tooth buds are forming, so there is a definite need for calcium!

So, after not being sick for 2 weeks, I was feeling rather smug, only to see my arse this morning as I had to rush to the loo before I'd even managed to have a drink, let alone anything to eat! I seem to have joined others who have had similar experiences!

Have a happy day all!

tiddleypompom · 18/08/2012 09:12

Blardy ell I give up. I can't keep up with the pace of natter. Love reading it though, just can't for the life of me recall what was said two pages back!

sarah was in Hove? I used to live there - I adored it. Sigh. In my next life I'll go back and live there forever. Are you in Brighton?

Low lying placenta? Yes I had one discovered at 20 wk scan last preg. Put me into consultant led care but didn't cover the 'os' so no need for c-section. Was advised no sex as can cause bleeding? In the end it was clear and no issues at delivery. It will almost certainly move by then if seen now.

jojo it seems I too have a cyst on ovary. Compare size if you fancy?! Are you concerned?

Nope to cheese toasties! Am I the only one? Instead I wish for cream doughnuts. Good job you can't buy them in the back of beyond or I'd be enormous! Tis sugar all the way here...

Um....

Happy scans, yay (pips?)! More please, I too am enjoying the upbeatness of this thread now - and mmmsleep yours will be one of them I'm sure. Hang on in there & try not to worry till Monday - everything double crossed here.

Symptoms at tiddley hq are: nausea (low lying, all day, no puke), heartburn (most of the day, must get gaviscon), tiredness (prob due to teething DS night waking), hotness (esp at night), vivid dreams. Into my mat clothes from last time but may have to invest in more as we get into winter weather as tis was summer last time. Coats vv expensive.

I give up. Can't remember owt else. Happy Sat all - I am in my tod with DS as family back in Brum clearing our old allotment shed.

theTramp · 18/08/2012 09:57

Fo you wake up hot & need loo tiddly? I do. Apparently it's your liver working hard, your temp goes up when it's busy.

Only craving I've had is for peanut butter. Book on food dos and fonts suggests it's fine as dd NHS website but sheet from MW yesterday said peanuts etc a no no. When I mentionedthe craving and amount id been munching she said don't worry the advice keeps changing and it's only if there's nut allergy in family.

For calcium cravings - have you tried the alpro soya milkshakes? The chocolate milk provides protein, calcium and sweet tooth hit in one and it's less than £2 a cartoon. I'm a dairy addict so I dont think a calcium shortage is going to be an issue.. Although I confess I've been eating alot of strawberries & cream in last few weeks
