Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

cherrypie That's what I was thinking, along with everyone else here. But it was strange that it wasn't mentioned to me at booking in or the next 2 appointments. She called me at home 3 weeks after I turned thirty and said I was "now" high risk! But I'm figuring it must be due to number of kids as all else is good. Just a question though - does high risk mean no water birth?

cherrypiew3 · 05/08/2012 00:41

I think it does although don't take my word for it I was always told no water birth, home birth and would need to go on to a consultant lead care ward. I do have a history of other things. Maybe it is different if there is no history of anything other than just the amount of children. Did you want to have a water birth I would just ask the mw next time you see her.

PurplePidjin · 05/08/2012 06:52

Afaik it's 24w; a lot of the campaigning for a reduction on the abortion limit is because babies can survive (with lots of help) from earlier, though. The further we all get from that limit the better though, ime.

I'm 30 and on my first, hospital is barely an option for me! Mw sang the praises of the birth centre then did a bit of a lemon-sucking face mentioning hospital when i booked in. Luckily i already knew the bc is amazing :o

EggsMichelle · 05/08/2012 07:05

There was something in the trash news (mail) about resuscitating 22wk babies, I can't find the link else that would be more helpful! Machines can keep a 22wk old alive, but as Pidj said that contradicts the 24wk abortion rule, a serious review of the law is needed.

Linked to law, every trust will have a different definition of High Risk which is changing all the time. Mrs you might find the policy has just changed in your trust and that's why your status has changed.

I'm going to have to turn off the Olympic recap, it's making me cry!

mwahmwah · 05/08/2012 07:49

Lying in bed watching Balamory with ds. Can't be bothered to get up sort out the chickens, feed the dog, clean last night's dinner dishes... Lazy moo!

SpottyTeacakes · 05/08/2012 07:54

I've just had a bacon sandwich Grin

Barbeasty · 05/08/2012 08:07

4Mrs, I think that you can "push forcefully" for what you want. Unless there is a specific medical risk which means it would be inadvisable for you to have a particular type of birth, you should be able to get what you want.

I know that there is a lot of info online about getting home births when midwives etc try to refuse (I did some research for my SIL at the point where she was threatening to just give birth at home on her own if they refused a homebirth based purely on no of children). Lots of the advice would probably be useful to argue for a water birth.

If you get details of why you are considered high risk and have done plenty of research around your preferred birth then talking to the head midwife should sort things out.

Even if there's a compromise to be reached, eg your risk is because of pph in all previous births so you can labour in a birthing pool but have to actually give birth on dry land in the hospital.

I think that if you can show that you're aware of the risks then you tend to be taken seriously.

Maybe raise it with your consultant and see what they say, and if it's a no then ask for detailed reasons then go away and research. You have 20 odd weeks to research!

Stacey, it's taken as 24 weeks, which is why you still get full maternity benefits/ leave etc even for a still birth after that point. But a colleague's son was born at about 22 weeks and is home but with lung issues.

SpottyTeacakes · 05/08/2012 08:10

The consultant led labour ward at my hospital has a pool in it 4mrs maybe yours has too and that could be your compromise?

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 05/08/2012 10:12

Right so another 3 weeks (I know I'm being irrational I know I am but just can't help it!!) the BH have calmed down and backache is all but gone. Hopefully bowling later won't set them off again!

4mrs if I were you I'd push for whatever birth you want unless medically it would be risky (which just being 4months over 30 would not count as) I'm pretty sure they have to let u.

ISpyJumpHigh · 05/08/2012 10:33

What is it with the ridiclously-vivid pregnancy dreams? Last night I dreamt we lived in a pub (we don't) and I went into labour, but none of the customers would leave so I couldn't put up the birthpool and no-one could get hold of the mw. The night before I had such a vivid dream that I'd had a massive row with my boss that I woke up with tears streaming down my face (I actually get on with her really well!) Doesn't make for the most restful night's sleep!

Anyway, off to aquanatal now. Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday. Oh, and congrats on all the good scan news from the end of last week.

minipie · 05/08/2012 11:02

I had a horrid and very vivid dream last night - I was in a boat with a cat who gave birth to a kitten with no nose or mouth Sad no prizes for guessing that is a pregnancy anxiety dream!

4Mrs high risk doesn't always mean no water birth - it depends on why you are high risk ie. is it something that will affect birth or not. For example I am "high risk" for antenatal purposes because I have an underactive thyroid which means more monitoring etc, but not for birth purposes and so I have been told I can have a water birth (assuming no other complications like breech). Definitely find out what makes you high risk - being over 30 certainly shouldn't!

kate2boysandabump · 05/08/2012 11:47

I'm exhausted after my evening's Olympic viewing and I woke up at 3:45 this morning and struggled to get back off. Waking at this time is regular as clockwork. I think my baby is getting me ready for night time waking Hmm

Stacey glad you're feeling better.

Pidj Welcome back!

4Mrs Maybe it's not so much high risk, but that you need to see a consultant about your induction?

In my area, babies are considered viable at 24 weeks. Which is why I'm waiting until I get to then to really buy anything. Only 2 weeks and 6 days to go and then I can start shopping. I do feel very reassured by my scan though and yesterday made a big, long list of all the things that we need to get.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 05/08/2012 12:01

I'm thinking about a hospital bag and what I want/need in labour. With dd it was packed and ready at 20 weeks Blush do starting to at least think about what I want/need is a good start!

EggsMichelle · 05/08/2012 12:34

Im going shopping tomo to get a dressing gown and couple of nighties to pack in my hospital bag, the advice seems to be buy summer nightwear as its so fricking hot on the ward!

StateofConfusion · 05/08/2012 13:44

eggs it can be warm but for once babys arrived I'd suggest bed socks and light dressing gown ie not one of the super thick fluffy ones, dd was born in November and I needed them, especially when sitting up at night or nipping to the loo/after showers etc.

Bubbless · 05/08/2012 13:53

i thought i felt my baby a few weeks ago, but i havent felt it since and im starting to get a bit worried. it was probs wind or whatever a few weeks ago, and im 19+3 now with no movement.. anyone else not felt their bean yet?!

i think my knowledge comes from tv only that a baby is viable at 24 weeks?

i think i want a water birth.. does anyone (who decided this more than 1 day ago!) have any good links that i should read on it?

hope everyone with braxton hicks is feeling a bit better now after baths / paracetamol!!

ive completly buggered up my back looking after my mum this morning, now lying in bed unable to move :(

HoneyMum21 · 05/08/2012 14:22

I really despise nighties. I know they're prob easier but pyjamas should be ok, shouldn't they?

mwahmwah · 05/08/2012 14:25

Managed to slip down the stairs this morning carrying Ds! Carpet burns on arms, staved toe, ouch!!! Poor Ds was more shocked than anything else Blush

SpottyTeacakes · 05/08/2012 14:40

Oh mwah hope you're ok!

After dd I just wore track suit bottoms and vest tops. I recommend some tighter small shorts for over your knickers to try and avoid leakage and generally make you feel a bit more secure

StateofConfusion · 05/08/2012 14:43

Yes honey I had a nightie for the first night as I was c-section, but after that wore pjs, had a lovely set from mothercare which I got twice actually I love them that much had them with ds and dd, with nice comfy bottoms, a vest top with bfing clips and a wrap around jacket, suitable for around guests and comfy!

ellliebelle · 05/08/2012 15:32

state those pj's sound good :) spotty also like the idea of small tighter shorts

I won a baby bouncer on ebay on friday listed as like new, i checked before bidding that they would let me collect, i won it for a very cheap price and they are now refusing to let me collect saying if i still want it i have to pay £13 for postage :( i am not happy

SpottyTeacakes · 05/08/2012 15:36

ellie ring eBay and see what they say. Did they have an option of collecting on the listing? Was the postage listed as £13? Standard parcels with Royal Mail shouldn't be anymore than £7 I wouldn't have thought. What sort of bouncer is it?

HoneyMum21 · 05/08/2012 15:38

Thanks state think I'm gonna be c-section too but gonna go with pjs and a few extra of DH's tshirts!

ellie did you message the seller through eBay about the pick up? If so go to conflict resolution as eBay can look through all the messages and if they told you you could pick up they'll enforce it

FriendofDorothy · 05/08/2012 17:01

I thought everything had gone quiet and it took me about 3 days to realise there was a new thread!

I am feeling loads better thanks. Took about 2 days for the diarrhea to stop and it also gave me horrid (and really scary) stomach cramps. I think it must have been really noisy in there!

I am still getting my head around the idea of having a boy but I am getting there I think.

StateofConfusion · 05/08/2012 17:24

I'd give ebay a ring elllie that's not really on at all, and personally having sold many a baby item on ebay I'd far rather collection than the faff posting!
