My experience of car seats is that you're always adjusting the straps, taking off the covers to wash them, hoicking them in and out of the car which would all put me off buying a really cheapo one as the straps would probably give you issues down the line. I have an old Britax one from DS2 that I'll keep using when baby has to face backwards then I have an absolutely brilliant forward-facing Maxi-Cosi Priori (not sure if you can still get them but I've had it since DS1) that has a recline lever so when baby falls asleep you can tilt them back and they don't have their head hanging forward in an uncomfortable position.

For beds, once baby grows out of the Moses Basket he will be in a cot at the top position until he starts to sit up, then at the bottom position until he climbs out the first time. Then he will go into a single bed with the cot mattress on the floor next to the bed. I did this with my first two as you can't re-use the mattresses between children and it means that when if they fall out of bed in the night they sometimes just end up sleeping on the cot mattress on the floor - happy as you please!

Just my two cents, please feel free to ignore my opinions as everyone has there own way of doing things.

I have the maxi cosi priori XP. They still do the Priory SPS and there is the priorifix. Good seat. I had a Graco first seat, but it was 6 years old, so threw it away. I have reused mattresses so long as they have had a waterproof fixed cover. I keep the cot mattress under the toddler bed so if I need to sleep in there, I have some comfort.

These babies are flipping expensive!

mrswee · 29/07/2012 17:20

valium too right... I had to buy a new flat to accomodate this baby... so far thats £153,000 plus the renovation! that is one mega expensive baby!!

TheDetective · 29/07/2012 18:02

I've got a cot bed with a drop side - mine is a Mothercare one, but bought on eBay for a fraction of the price!

I've gone for a cot bed, as with DS I remember when he got to 18 months, he climbed out his cot in the night, and gave me quite a fright. I then had to save up as I couldn't afford to get a new bed and mattress there and then, but knew he could hurt himself climbing out the cot. I ended up putting the mattress on the floor for a month or so but it was a pain as he just got upset! Would have been so much easier with a cot bed, in retrospect!

This time we have a very small room, and it will only just fit a single bed in, with room for a chest of drawers and nothing else! So figured for us a cot bed is the best idea as it is smaller there will be room for more stuff in there. We won't be having another baby until this one is at least 3-3.5, by that time we would probably be going down the single bed route, and switching bedrooms for this baby to have the bigger room. DS can have the smaller room with a high sleeper as he will be 13/14 then. Or he can share with his brother, and baby can go in the nursery again with the cot bed! We shall see! But cot bed for us is the best option. Everyone has their own needs though, you have to figure out your own way ;)

I've had another chill out day! Going to do a roast dinner now though, just waiting for DP to get back from the shops! Loving the new olympic opening hours! Back in work early in the morning :( I'm dreading it! Will see what the day brings!

VQ No interesting story lmao!! I was wearing a low cut vest top, and it had sort of gaped in the middle due to my shoulders being stooped forward to eat. I had no bra on, so when the food fell, it landed straight on my nipple of all places!

I'm gutted as I was supposed to be painting the nursery today. Figured it would be a better idea to wait, but I really want to get it done!!

StuntNun · 29/07/2012 18:15

Ladies with swollen ankles, are you having pain as well? My left ankle is swollen much more than the right and it's just about too painful to stand on. I'm wondering whether I could have sprained it and not noticed but the swelling is usually completely down in the morning. I'll try the flight socks tomorrow. If they don't work then I'll save them for flights!

TheDetective · 29/07/2012 18:28

I'm having pain too Stunt. I woke up several times last night with horrible cramp in my feet/lower leg! Had to get up and walk around on it to ease it.

It's a little uncomfy to walk on in the day, but nothing I can't handle. My left is also worse than the right, although it is the right that is more painful! Go figure!

I'd give the flight socks a whirl, I'm going to pick some up this week, however I won't be able to wear them when I need them - in work! Due to the extreme heat on the ward, I'm dripping wet as it is without adding another layer! I'd pass out!

NervousAt20 · 29/07/2012 19:00

We have a got a cotbed for the little one, don't think it has a drop down side but sure we'll manage Smile. We have a muma and papas car seat with the isofix base, can't remember the name of it but we gave them the make and model of my car and said it would deffinatly fit and it was all half price when we got it so that was great!

Had a lazy afternoon and just done all my housework, have a casserole in the oven and now feet up and browse on MN

TitsalinaBumSquash · 29/07/2012 19:13

We have a teeny, tiny micro cot because our house is really too small for another but we have no hope of getting anywhere bigger.
Our car seat comes with travel system so we're all sorted on that front.
Been to Drusillas zoo today with the kids which was nice, now home doing boring housework type things before bed.
I've been having tightenings for a couple of weeks though, they always take me by surprise.
I really need to get round to booking my 3D scan! Smile

TheDetective · 29/07/2012 19:15

What is a micro cot Tits sounds interesting! I have no room in my bedroom for this baby, and its going to end up in the nursery as soon as it outgrows the moses basket, as that is all the space we have! There is walk round room only around the bed, and that is it!

Having tightenings also, but painless, and random!

daisychain76 · 29/07/2012 19:33

Hi everyone

Thank you for the recommendation re Little Lamb nappies - just bought mine and the one pound wraps. If anyone has used them before, are liners essential?

Also am now properly convinced that I can't allow the baby to have BJ as initials!

Did my first pregnancy yoga class today, which was fab (and jaffa cakes at the end!). Also meant DH, having got in at 3am having developed a sudden taste for red bull and vodka, had to get up and mind the DCs. Don't actually mind him going out, but it does no harm to remind him that it doesn't absolve him of child care duties!

Hope everyone has a good evening.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 29/07/2012 19:35

It's just a small cot, we got it from kiddiecare, it's about half the size of a normal cot. Smile

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 19:40

detective my bedroom is similar, but probably due to the super king bed with wooden shelf surround! I like the idea of wedging a cot between the bed and wall, with one side removed.

daisy another gambler I see! I made my own fleece liners, just cut out of an old dressing gown. I think they are lovely and soft on the bot, and easier to plop the plop in the loo.

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 20:09

The nappies are coming tomorrow! Stupidly excited. I am leading a very dull life at the moment. I can't wait to see her in a little fluffy nappy. Best dig out the bigger trousers!

gardenpixies32 · 29/07/2012 20:14

The nappies are gorgeous! Teeny, white and fluffy.

The wraps are a pound each as they are getting rid of old stock. They are usually 8.50 each! So a bargain if you buy 7!

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 20:15

Hopefully mine are not teeny.

gardenpixies32 · 29/07/2012 20:19

Well, the size ones are teeny! I also get excited by cloth nappies. Sad!

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 20:24

Cloth nappies are truly addictive. Not many things that regularly get covered in poo are. My first one was a fuzzibunz with little frogs on. I cried when DD1 grew out of it. I will never get rid of that one! Gonna choose some boy fleece material soon for the liners. Should keep me out of mischief for a while.

gardenpixies32 · 29/07/2012 20:27

That is funny! You should treat yourself to a few Blueberry Minky nappies. They don't need wraps and are the softest loveliest nappies ever! Truly addictive.

TheDetective · 29/07/2012 20:28

Baaaah! I had a look on kiddicare, and they are still too wide to fit in! Stupid bedroom! Thanks though!

Has anyone else had a complete lack of anyone offering old baby things (for money or otherwise) or parents offering to get something for the baby?

Not that I expect it, but it seems most people have relatives or friends passing on no longer used baby equipment, or lending it out.

I'm most disappointed by my dad, who hasn't bothered to respond to my email 6 weeks ago with the 20 week scan picture, and an update on how things are. Considering he lives in Switzerland, and I only get to see him once a year, he makes no effort in between. I wish he would. I email him, he reads his email every day (work email is same as personal email), so why no response? I had to ring him to get a response to my email about my 12 week scan, and he said he had read my email, but no reason why he hadn't responded. I'm not ringing him this time if he can't be bothered otherwise.

It is always me who contacts him, either ring or email or text. The only time he contacts me is if he is coming over, to arrange to stay at my house. I wouldn't mind if he was skint, and couldn't afford to ring or whatever, but he is a millionaire.

I do wonder if he remembers his only child even exists.

Mind you, this is the man who said 'so who is the father then' when I rang him to tell him I was pregnant. Not surprising really since he pays such little attention about what is going on in my life, he must have forgotten about the 3 year relationship with DP...

Sometimes I feel like there is only me, DP and DS who give a shit about this baby arriving.

There, rant over!

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 20:34

detective you, DP and DS sounds like a wonderful little team. Sometimes less is more, and you are actually pretty blessed. Re the cot, could you push the bed up against the wall to give more space on your side? I am sure DP could clamber over for a while.

horseylady · 29/07/2012 21:15

Hugs for those having a bad time :( I feel line I've done nothing but drive all fucking weekend. I feel line shit, I'm full of cold, can't speak yet people still want me to run round after them :( I'm sorry to moan but I really just want to take some night nurse and enjoy my day at the Olympics tomorrow. Instead I'm going to go feeling ill :( I have no voice my throat feels like I've eaten razor blades, nose blocked ears blocked think I'm going to bed soon.

Literally driven 500 miles over yesterday and today.

tomatoplantproject · 29/07/2012 21:17

You ladies are all so organised! I have nothing for the baby yet - not even a small baby grow. We're still working on the house to move in to though.... DH has been decorating the nursery this weekend but I don't want to buy anything until we actually move. We're in team yellow and our tactic is to buy the absolute minimum until the baby arrives then buy as we go along. Is anyone else as bad as we are?

GTbaby · 29/07/2012 21:19

detective in same with my mum but not really lol A bit miffed. Sil have offered loads. And I know mum is buying stuff. N plans on giving me stuff after baby is born. But she hasn't asked me what I need. I wana minimise useless stuff I have n only want essentials. Don't know what to say to her.

Also confused between pebble n other maxi cosi seat. Other then cost can't see the difference. Sil offered her mama n papa one. But just read shouldn't be used after 6 years. N her is 6 years old now.

Dixiebell · 29/07/2012 21:21

passme, re the Henley cot, not sure exactly what made of, it's wood with a white paint finish? It's v sturdy and you can drop the side one handed.
