Tiddleypompom Yes Murray's speech made me feel quite emotional - I thought he came across really well when he made it.

TinkerBellaFlora I know exactly what you mean about the unnecessary anxiety - they warned me before I had my scan last Tuesday at the EPU that it would be too early to see a heartbeat so I am hoping that when I go on Friday, there will be one! If there is, I have decided to order a Sophie the giraffe toy - I've always liked them and it will be the first thing I buy for the baby. I don't know if that sounds silly...

Popinda · 08/07/2012 21:27

Also, wanted to say that im hungry all the time too! Grin

woody17 · 08/07/2012 21:27

Have most people had their initial appointment with the midwife? My surgery wont let us have them before 10 weeks, which feels like ages away!

MrsBradleyCooper · 08/07/2012 21:34

Popinda - I had to be signed off work for weeks with sickness, and I just stayed at home most of the time vomiting!

I also used to carry around a "sick bowl" in the car - and I had to use it on numerous occasions....

Really hoping that it is different this time!

woody - not had midwife appt yet - we have it a t 8 weeks - mine is 31st July.

Leftwingharpie · 08/07/2012 21:41

Mmmsleep it just goes to show us newly PGs will worry about anything - even not having such bad ms that we need to be hospitalised! Grin

We're really getting into booking appointment territory now, there seems to be someone having one every day next week! Can't wait for mine. I wasn't planning on taking DH Popinda but he'll definitely come to the scan.

OP posts:
MrsBradleyCooper · 08/07/2012 21:51

Sorry Popinda - forgot your other question...

No I haven't/wouldn't take DH to any antenatal appointments. The only ones I would take him to are the 12 and 20 week scans. Apart from the fact he is at work, he is highly embarrassing and always comes out with really strange comments Grin

woody17 · 08/07/2012 21:59

My husband sounds a bit similar MrsBradleyCooper - I don't think he'll be coming to any appointments apart from the 12 and 20 week scans. I went to the one at the EPU on my own last week and I'll be going on my own on Friday. I don't think it's quite as real to him yet.

bbface · 08/07/2012 22:31

All day low level nausea. Like the second day of a monster hangover. Not debilitating, certainly not. But unpleasant and a bit shit? Most definitely!

Got my scan next Monday, that will make it all worth while Smile

Love and a good nights sleep to all

bbface · 08/07/2012 22:35

Oh and I wouldn't take dh to antenatal apps. I see men in the waiting rooms with their partners looking like lemons. I love my midwife appointments, opportunity for me to ask such questions like... I have very bad wind, is this related to the pregnancy? I prefer to shield dh as much as poss from that side to pregnancy.

Added to which, stressful for him to be away from work.

The scans however are a different matter altogether, and he wouldn't miss them for the world.

Carikube · 08/07/2012 22:36

This thread seems to move really quickly so sorry for not posting comments to specific people....

DH didn't come to any antenatal appts with DD1 or 2 so I doubt he will come this time round either. He did come to the scans (and as I went in a bit early for my 12 week scan for DD2 they were already having a good look by the time he turned up - he nearly freaked when the sonographer said it was triplets for a joke Grin).

We were in Southampton before and I had to see the GP to get referred to the midwife there but I have a feeling that at my new surgery I can call the MW directly - I'll give it a go so that I can see when I can get a booking appt. Luckily my previous 2 pgs have been pretty uneventful and although I feel a bit bleurgh at the moment, I don't really get MS or anything so I can't offer much advice to those who do.

DH has now had a good 10 hours for the news to sink in (apparently his first thought was that it will be another wedding anniversary this year that I won't get to drink lots or eat rare steak - we'll have been married for 5 years this year and have only had one anniversary where I haven't been pg or bf...) though he's still in a bit of a state of shock. Fortunately I don't have to worry about work as I left my job when we moved last Dec and haven't done too much about finding another one yet Blush

Right, off to bed as at least I now have something to explain why I have been feeling so tired the last few days (nothing to do with two small children who keep getting up at the crack of dawn!)

Tay1981 · 08/07/2012 22:46

Hello Everyone

Just checking in - just back from hold and realized there's lots to catch up on!! Sickness in full swing here tbh feel like crap on a stick. Started last week with feeling rough in the mornings and has rapidly developed into vomiting in the morning and all day all night nausea. Really hoped it wouldn't be like this this time :-( and I'm sure I only started with the sickness at 6 weeks last time - I'm not even 6 weeks until tomorrow.

Whoever was asking about vomming on the way to work - I found it v useful to carry a 'sick kit' with me last time. I didn't use public transport much but did vom on a train once when the woman I sat next to was wearing horrible perfume Blush. Made it to the vestibule though. Things you need for a sick kit are ......nappy bags to vom into, baby wipes, small bottle of water, mints. I found sucking on a mint if i thought i was gonna vim in public prevented it from happening most of the time. Hope you don't need it though!!

Having a blood test to confirm pregnancy at docs tomorrow (they don't trust you to poas in the US obv). Then will apparently will be referred for a scan to confirm heartbeat and not ectopic before starting on blood thinners. Not looking forward to blood thinners but scan will be nice. Hard to feel positive when you feel so shit!

Leftwingharpie · 08/07/2012 22:53

Tay great advice about the sick kit! Just hope I don't actually need to use it, particularly on the train!

Leftwingharpie · 08/07/2012 22:56

Carikube it's really hard to keep up isn't it! There should only be one more week left for people to get March due dates so hopefully it won't get much more manic than this!

Loving The Sick Kit. Excellent entrepreneurial idea Grin

StrawbsAndCream · 08/07/2012 23:37

Wow this thread moves fast!! I am very impressed! Thankyou to all the welcomes, you are all so lovely..I promise i wasn't welling up reading them! Blush it has been a struggle but all worth it in the end, fingers crossed!

Sorry to hear some are having a hard time and feeling rough, especially the nausea and chucking up!! Hope you feel better tomorrow, I'm sure the rest of us have it all to come! I'm defo with you on the hunger, nothing fills me up, and the cramps are annoying, I know it's normal but I'm so paranoid!

I had so much to say but my memory is rubbish at the best of times! So goodnight all, I am nearly asleep in my hot milk (such an old woman Wink)

Oh and I'm also loving the sick kit! X

Hitchingal · 09/07/2012 08:26

Morning everyone!
DH wants to come to the docs with me on Thurs, have told him it won't be exciting but he wants to be supportive I think!
bbface I know what you mean, feel nauseous, knackered & a bit headachey, v like a hangover! No actual sickness yet & I am keeping everything crossed !

kurlyvoice · 09/07/2012 09:27

Morning everyone,

With regards to antenatal appointments, DH came to my scans last time and then rushed home from work the two times I was sent to the DAU at hospital for pre-eclampsia alert. But he didn't come to midwife appointments as he was at work.

Well, girls, I cracked and got out my maternity clothes and am luxuriating in elasticated pockets this morning in my smallest pair of jeans! It's nice to have stages of maternity wear to work through.

I hope that anyone who has had worries over the weekend are able to get answers today - don't be afraid to ask! I'm really glad that I didn't just sit out my Friday worries.

Anyone got their booking in appointment today? I've lost track! Mine isn't until next Tuesday - must remember to have my breakfast early so that I don't mess up the blood test results (which happened last time).

I'm loving my Monday day off, except I have to take DS to the doctor as he's suddenly decided to develop eczema! It's not bothering him though (as he extracts every single toy from the toy box and book from the shelf).

tiddleypompom · 09/07/2012 10:53

Mmm maternity jeans. Don't blame you kurly - I borrowed dh's track suit bottoms last night & it was bliss!

Salt & vinegar crisps. My new favourite thing. Great - why can't I crave fruit or a large glass of water?? Also grateful for sick-kit advice. Sadly I have needed to be prepared - scared an old man this morning with a behind hedge vom. Not nice but thank god for my pack of mints... DS was on my back in carrier, poor little chap!

I don't yet have a date for booking in appt or scan - not too fussed as I am only 7 weeks on Wed and not getting any early scans (unless something goes wrong). DH came to a mw appt at around 24 weeks as he hadn't heard the heartbeat before (they don't play it at the scans) & I wanted him to hear that fabulous noise. Otherwise though he left me to it & I was happy to go alone & indulge myself & little niggles.

Happy Monday x

mandasand · 09/07/2012 11:35

Hello everyone! Wow this thread moves fast! Congrats to all new-comers and sorry for those who have had worries over the past few days. Here's to the coming weeks before our first scans passing quickly!

Nothing much to report here. Slight nausea feeling this morning, and quite a bit of tiredness (but nothing new there as I always seem to be knackered!) But on the tiredness front:

  1. My doctor has prescribed me new antihistimines (Promethazine) for a skin condition called urticaria, because my usual ones (Certirizine) aren't good for pregnancy. But the new antihistimines don't seem to be as effective and seem to contribute to my tiredness (they can make you feel sleepy, says the packet). Has anyone also had to come off Certirizine?

  2. Also, how do people feel about taking long-haul flights during second trimester? I'm supposed to be going to the US for a conference in late September when - all being well - I'll be four months gone. I was going to fly one day, spend four days there, and return on the sixth day. I am a bit concerned about being away from home, in case anything went wrong, but also I'm worried about the effects of two lots of jetlag close together. More pressing is the fact that I don't really want to use up a whole week of me and DH being on our own before the baby arrives! It's a bit tricky because the university I work for has approved the costs and are waiting for instruction from me to book the flight and hotel accommodation, but I can't really tell them I'm pulling out without good reason ... and I don't want to tell work I'm pregnant a moment before I have to!

  3. Which leads on to my next question: are we obliged to tell employers as soon as the 12-week scan brings (hopefully) good news or can we wait a little bit longer? Ideally, I'd like to deliver on two major projects before telling my boss I'd like some maternity leave - this would be at 4 months pregnant. As I work on an externally funded project, and there is only my boss and I working on this project, he's allowed to replace me during the mat. leave, but I'd prefer for him not to do that. Instead, I'd like to try to keep my hand in as much as poss during mat. leave AND have an extra 6 or 9 months added onto my contract, which is what a colleague in a similar position is doing. So if I can prove to him that I can deliver on these two major projects (we've only been working together for a year) then he's more likely to agree to this.

Sorry to write such a long note!
Happy Monday to you all newly pregnant ladies!
xx

HeeHeeHeeBum · 09/07/2012 12:12

Afternoon all. I've had horrible back pain all weekend so I'm going to the docs this afternoon about it. I really hope it's nothing serious. Because of my mc I've been worrying all night so hopefully this doctor can put my mind at rest. I really wish I could have an early scan, I think I will have to look into private ones.
mandasand You don't need to tell your employer at 12 weeks, I think it is something like 15 weeks before your due date is the latest.
kurly I got my maternity jeans out yesterday as was pleased to find they still fit me and are so comfortable.
Sorry for not chatting with everyone. Have a nice day all :)

jessi0343 · 09/07/2012 12:34

Hi Everyone!
Glad to hear everyone is getting excited for upcoming booking in appointments! On the issue of whether DH attends, my DH did attend my first booking in last time around just because he wanted to meet the midwife, see what the procedure is, check out the quality of care, etc. From then on he didn't attend, and won't go to this one either. But I think its nice when partners take an interest in appointments etc!

Thanks Tay for advice on sick kit! I didn't travel last time between 7-12 weeks because I was SO sick! Boss let me work from home. But will be good to know for this time.

Manda can only answer number 2) question: I travelled lots last time back and forth to America during my whole pregnancy. It was difficult during first trimester (sick a lot) and again in the third trimester as I got a bit big, and the stewards were making a big fuss, etc. Plus you can't travel after 32 weeks. But traveling during second trimester was a breeze! And its absolutely alright. The only thing different I did was buy flight socks, and made sure to get up often to walk around.

I am still having on/off brown spotting for the last 5 days. Trying to remain calm. I am not sure exactly how far along I am, somewhere between 5.5-7 weeks, so am going to wait until middle of next week before attending EPU for early scan (so that I know I am at least 7 weeks). nervous, but hanging in there.

Carikube · 09/07/2012 12:57

mandasand I told my employer with DD1 when I was about 16 weeks pg as I was getting to the stage of not being able to hide it anymore. With DD2 I told him almost immediately after the 12 week scan but that was mainly because I was still on mat leave from DD1 and I ended up taking back to back mat leaves.

I also went to the US with work in the Nov (she's a March baby too) and it was absolutely fine. We also did a holiday to Thailand round about the same time and there really weren't any problems - 2nd trimester is definitely the easiest one to travel in!

Dh is still in denial and I think this may continue for some time. We won't tell anyone other than parents until after the 12 week scan but my belly seems to have popped out overnight so I don't know how long we'll get to keep it quiet and I'm wondering how long it will be before I break back in to my maternity clothes...

mandasand · 09/07/2012 13:30

Thanks for your advice HeeHeeHeeBum, jessi0343 and Carikube! That's really reassuring about the transatlantic travel. I guess I should try thinking more positively rather than worrying about having to deal with, say, a MC out there on my own. I'm over 35 so I think there's a 1 in 5 chance of the pregnancy not working out. (Yes, I'm a glass 1/5 empty kind of gal!)

Sorry to hear of your back pain HeeHeeHeeBum and your spotting jessi0343. FX everything settles down for you both.
xx

Hi everyone. I'm starting to develop a bit of nausea. Dry heaved over the kitchen sink this morning and just been feeling generally meh all morning. Have popped out for some much needed fresh air.

Still ages to go till my booking appointment. I wish I had DH's confidence I swear he never gives it a thought!
