I understand brooke, sorry to hear that too lauraloo - please be very careful of Dr Google, there is a lot of very dodgy beliefs/advice on thyroid on the internet.
This thread is great.

But even on there a couple of people scaremonger about not trusting endocrinologists. You can also see how much I panicked at on point on there!
Tsh is a good indication of overall thyroid function - I've started getting print outs of all my previous and current results, might be good to do that. Some gps aren't so aware of what to do or the preg ranges - now I'm under the consultant obstetrician I'm cross checking things.
The best UK charity/ site for info is the British Thyroid Foundation, which is affiliated to the British Thyroid Association (the uks group of consultants in in this area). I need to join actually. Avoid the others esp if they bang on about meds made from pig thyroid (armour).
People at work don't get how thyroid can affect you, I had that line about pregnancy not an illness. The doctor did add 'unstable thyroid in pregnancy' to my slapped cheek sick note which helped them get it. Maybe chat to doc? It very much affects cognition, concentration, mood and your ability to handle stress - it really can be a chemically induced depression. I get terrible anxiety as I struggle to deal with normal life if under. I always think I'm going bonkers. Before diagnoses with bipolar these days thyroid tests are done to rule out, it can also be a cause of significant dementia in the elderly, reversed with medication.
(puts soap box away)
Sorry to hijack our lovely baby thread!
