I've never made any of their stuff, whims - I'd be interested in how it turns out? :)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 13/06/2012 14:20

PS, how many sleep bags will I need, will two do? :)

whimsicalname · 13/06/2012 14:29

I'd say 2 new ones would be plenty fluff, but perhaps if anyone offers you a hand me down, take them up on it. Essentially you want one to wash and one to wear, but with the proviso that on a sicky night, you might get through lots! But that's not to say, of course, that they always need to be in one.

Pram suits, I think, are like big all in ones that are toasty warm. If you have a pram pram with covers, Fluffette will be toasty anyway, but if you use a sling, or have a push chair that's a bit less toasty, they're quite handy. But they're also the sort of thing that I found I got given a few of as baby presents, so possibly hold back (if you can manage!) for now.

I'm hallf way thru the shirt, and really pleased with how it's looking. The one I'm cutting up was my brother's, and it's a really posh man's work shirt in total stock broker pink. I might see if I can maternitise a pair of pinstripes to go with!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 13/06/2012 14:54

:o stock broker pink!

I will hold off, my sister is going mad with the baby buying (you'd think it was her who was preggers, lol) :)

NinjaChipmunk · 13/06/2012 15:34

whims you'll look awesome especially if you do some pinstripe trousers too!

clickingtock · 13/06/2012 15:38

Cartoon - I think you should see the midwife. Sorry you are going through this. We are all thinking of you. And brooking for your shy little bean who's not quite ready to be seen by the world.

Two grobags is plenty Fluff (did you know you autocorrect to Cliff?!) Grin. We bought a second-hand winter all-in-one outdoor suit off ebay (no gifted ones for us I'm afraid - Whims obviously has v nice family/friends) - v useful for an adventurous 10-month old but not sure if you really need one for a newborn and then summer will be upon you before you can bat an eyelid. My mum found us a a furry babygrow suit that did the trick when DS was tin - second-hand again. As you can tell we did everything on a shoestring after our expenses all went on the private midwife.

Btw Fluff - I found a MN review of the M&P Urbo and there were a lot of problems with the wheels and handle. Did you read through it? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/965093-Mamas-and-Papas-Urbo-Feedback/AllOnOnePage It does look fab though and I hope I haven't put a damper on it.

Thanks Whims - I have had one other Phil and Ted recommendation so will go research. Like that tunic you're making btw. I must put up pic of latest jumper for DS/UBB.

Ninja Brooking that you'll find the extra dosh for your dream home. Grin

xxx

clickingtock · 13/06/2012 15:39

DS was tinY not tin... durr.

clickingtock · 13/06/2012 15:40

Sorry - link again Urbo

ScrambledSmegs · 13/06/2012 15:58

Ooh that tunic looks lovely whims, sounds great in pink. Luckily for DH I have never learnt to use a sewing machine, although I really want to. Otherwise all those lovely work shirts he has would be in serious danger! Hmm, must google basic dressmaking courses in my area!

Fluff we were given one of those dreampods and it was very good. However we also had a grobag in the same tog and I swear that DD got far hotter in the dreampod Confused. Vair odd.

However... we were also given a beautiful merino sleeping bag, and I swear it is the best thing we were ever given for DD. Dd wore it from about 6 months to 2 years old, in most weathers apart from scorching. She slept amazingly in it, in the end we gave away the other bags and just used that one, plus another I bought for wash & wear. If it's very cold we put a cellular blanket over her to keep her warm.

She now has the toddler size ones, and she loves them so much she can almost get them on by herself, and won't take them off in the morning! They are expensive (eye-watering!) but bambino merino often has 'seconds' in their clearance section. It was worth it for us though, most of my friends have spent more on various sleeping bags in different togs and sizes than we have on our pricier bags.

Pre-bags she was swaddled, in some sort of bamboo wraps we were given. She wasn't a fan of the arms-in style, so I was often treated to the sight of my newborn doing rave arms in her sleep (and the occasional punch in the face - the joys of co-sleeping!). No wonder she moved to her own cot earlier than I intended!

Well, that was an essay! Sorry. Would love to hear what others did/are planning on doing too.

Fluff and others, I noticed Ikea are selling baby grow bags too, at what I thought were reasonable prices. No idea of quality/reviews etc. However if you have a local store it might be worth a look (ours is only 10 mins away [bliss])

ScrambledSmegs · 13/06/2012 16:05

Oh, I want a Phil & Teds explorer so badly Sad. DH says we have to use what we have, but surely I could sell the stokke and get a lovely P&T with the proceeds? I may even be able to get new if the resale value of the stokke is good (have all the kit!).

cartoon have you seen your midwife yet? Fx for you.

DreamingOfPeace · 13/06/2012 17:00

fluffy, I've not read it all, but pram suits are great for slings or cold days, it depends how 'outdoorsy' you are but we're out a lot and i couldn't do without them. Room temp, in our very cold old house and even when we moved (DD 5 weeks old) and DD was still newborn I ran a thermostatically controlled plug in radiator in her room to keep it 18 degrees all night. I found it much nicer to be sat up feeding in a warm room too but judging from responses on here its very PFB to do so & I still am- PFB, not running the radiator! and I had 4 grobags, all hand me downs, but had a refluxy baby and sometimes used 3 a night, only changing them if she was soaked to the skin. :)

Now, best read the rest to catch up.

jaggythistle · 13/06/2012 17:04

Ikea ones are good vakue, but the zip did go on one of DS1's 6-18 month type ones. Mothercare ones are ok, but i much prefer the Grobags for quality.

I hunted about for last season's designs being sold off cheaper!

sorry bad typing due tofeeding DS2!

cartoonface · 13/06/2012 17:08

Shyly admits that I changed my appointment. Its just I didn't like her wen I had my booking app with first preg and found her a bit hmmm not sure wot word to use. But I've spoken to her over the phone already this time for reasurrance and was a bit taken aback when she said that even if my early scan was good didn't mean I'd have a successful preg. So I decided she wouldn't have anything to say that would make me better

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 13/06/2012 17:24

Yikes that's a bit insensitive cartoon, I'm not surprised you've changed appointment :( can you see someone else?

Tock I saw those and was a bit put off but after a bit of thought I'm reasonably happy that it's a small sample of reviewers and they changed manufacturers last year too. The reviews on the M&P website are fine (but they would be lol)

We won't be getting any hand-me-downs either, all our friends with kids are planning on having more! :)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 13/06/2012 17:33

Wow stacks ikea sleeping bags are really reasonable! Lucky you living so close to one, mine's an hour away. I really wanted a green ikea cot but they've discontinued them :(

Stacks · 13/06/2012 17:53

Now I'm looking through the Ikea site. I want one of these and all sorts of other stuff. Promised DH we won't buy anything for a while though, so I'll have to hold off.

However, I'm thinking of getting DH a Father's Day present from the bump.. good or bad idea? Maybe a newborn sized vest with "Daddy" on or similar. Small, inexpensive, but a nice little token. I'm still quite often terrified of jinxing the whole thing though :(

Cartoon seems like a good idea to change your appointment, she doesn't sound like a very understanding midwife at all.

whimsicalname · 13/06/2012 18:14

fluff let me know if you're coming to the bristol ikea and i'll get you a free with a family card cup of coffee. It's walking distance away from us! I never drive there because if I did the car would be full all the time.

Btw, have you got a cot sorted? I don't think ours is worth exporting, so it'll be going begging come the last week of July.

clickingtock · 14/06/2012 07:51

Hello all - Cartoon - that doesn't sound like tough love, just 'tough' from the midwife. Poor you. How are you feeling today? I hope you get a new appointment, better advice, and some peace of mind.

Fluff and Stacks - imho the summer Ikea grobags are worth the investment although I agree about the zips being a bit dodge and we found the armholes quite tight even on our snakey-skinny DS. For winter I would go the extra mile and buy really good quality. OOOH Smegs - am planning to crochet a merino sleeping bag for next DC. I have a great pattern if anyone wants me to scan it in and PM (Fluff??) - quite straight forward. I reckon it will take around a week to make.

Smegs I am leaning towards buying an Explorer and DP seems interested, although for some reason we never saw ourselves as 3-wheeler types. We will check out an Urbo too though Fluff. We need to find a big Mothercare or similar where we can look at lots of buggies. We didn't do this first time round and that was a mistake. The Explorer is just within budget though I notice you have to pay extra for the newborn extra seat.

Whims - can't believe you are off to see Uncle Sam so soon. What an exciting time although you must have loads on your plate. Have you got much of a bump? I still feel rather unimpressive - was hoping the second would be a bit more reassuringly bumpy. Boobs deffo look pregnant but that's about it. I think the change in my tummy shape is down to grazing all day long.

Big hugs to all - Ninja, Dream, Jaggy, Biscuits and anyone I haven't seen for a while. xxx

cartoonface · 14/06/2012 07:58

tock my mw app is now next week wed. They seem to only have the one mw at my doc. It's the day after my next scan so hopefully that will bring me some better news to go to mw with. Not feeling to good about things today thou. Dp is very sad he's not very optimistic about it

NinjaChipmunk · 14/06/2012 09:05

oh cartoon I can't imagine how long a wait it must seem to you and your dp. When you have your booking in next week, I would ask the mw if there is anywhere other than the gp's that you can see the mw for regular appointments as then you might get to see someone nicer? I shall be brooking for you till your next scan (in between paint stripping, appointing estate agents and putting in offers on houses!)
tock I'm sure your bump will kick in soon, how many weeks are you now? Are you coming up to your 12 wk scan soon? I didn't get a bump straight away with this one but I was bloated right from the beginning. Now I'm just massive. And I seem to have developed a craving for cucumber, I'm getting through about 4 a week.
Right time for a brew, be back later.

clickingtock · 14/06/2012 09:46

Cartoon - sending you massive hugs ((())). I really hope you get a wonderful surprise with your scan and DP can be excited again. These early days of pg are so tough on everyone. And then you have to hold out for the 20wk scan results and wait for the viability age - it's all tough really, isn't it? But I know you've had a loss already so extra tough on you. Brooking like mad for you, anyway.

Smiling at Ninja's cucumber fest. I am buying some odd things to eat too. Steak and kidney pudding last night. Haven't had one in years. Yes - I think bloated is a better word for how I look, but I guess I'm not yet 11wks so I can't expect much more. 12wk scan is a week on Tuesday, thanks for asking.

Better do some work today. After a 5.30am start this prospect is rather daunting, but it's worse in anticipation I guess.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 14/06/2012 10:21

cartoon are you far from your local birthing centre or hospital? I saw a MW at my hospital time before last, you might be able to transfer your care there if you're unhappy?

I didn't have a bump at 12 weeks either, tock - though I'd gained 5lbs pretty much overnight by 6 weeks (water?). I'm quite the whale now, though :o I think I reached that awkward 'is she pregnant or has she eaten too many pies?' phase about 15 weeks, then by 18 I looked properly diffed. Loving ninja's cucumber addiction - mine was watermelon :o

Love the hedgehog stacks! I confess I've just bought one of these - baby's first toy :o

Whims that's so kind! We don't have a cot yet, no - I'd love yours, if it's just going to get left behind? :) We looked in a local 2nd hand "good as new" type baby shop yesterday and they were horrifically expensive, £300! So we were just going to IKEA (£50) it Blush

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 14/06/2012 10:23

PS stacks someone in pregnancy posted and apparently there's such a thing as a "dad to be" father's day card; DH would think it was a bit much though, I think. I was tempted by the "I am your father" Jedi tshirts in Tesco but resisted, and now they're sold out...

ScrambledSmegs · 14/06/2012 10:27

Oh cartoon I don't blame you for feeling down. It's going to be a long week for you and your DH. I really hope you both have a wonderful surprise at the next scan.

Oh and a good stock phrase for unkind midwives is 'Did you mean to sound so insensitive/rude?'. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt Sad.

tock it was all bloating for me at first too - in fact it's only recently that it seems like a real bump. My only food craving is still salad Confused. DD has been giving her toys 'salad' so even she's noticed - better that than pretending to be sick in the street though ConfusedBlush.
