Happy Birthday smegs!!!!!!! Make sure you get in nice food and drink preferably delivered, dose up dd as much as possible, and chill out and relax. Sorry to hear you think it might be a bit crap, try to enjoy yourself.
I have almost permanent heartburn. I can't even look at food without it coming on! The boys are out though and I have just done a massive online shop to finish off the contents of my hospital bag and to stock up on bits and bobs to see us through. I think I may need a bigger kitchen when it actually arrives.
I have decided to go and view the house we can't afford just to get it out of my system, I really hope its not as nice as it looks otherwise I will need to somehow raise an extra £30k from somewhere....

scarletfingernail · 10/06/2012 14:17

Happy Birthday Smegs Thanks I hope DD gets better quickly.

Welcome back Whims and Stacks, shame the weather's been rubbish for you both.

Ninja any signs yet? I guess the fact that you have heartburn suggests that the baby is still quite high up. I hope she drops down for you soon, I found the constant need to pee much easier to deal with than the constant heartburn.

NinjaChipmunk · 10/06/2012 15:11

nothing yet scarlet but she's not dues till 27th so I'm not surprised. I am all out of energy but that's about how exciting its getting!
Right, I really must get off the sofa even if if its only for a few minutes...

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 10/06/2012 17:34

Happy birthday smegs! Hope today has panned out better than you thought - if you feel that rubbish you could do something next weekend instead? DH and I (well, mostly me) have a birthday-week month anyway Wink

Went to try out the pram I liked the look of and it's faberoo, definitely think I'll be getting that one. Just going to hold out for a month or so and see if it goes back on sale again :)

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 10/06/2012 17:53

My sister was apparently advised not to use cot bumpers when she had hers (10ish years ago) because they were thought to cause babies to overheat or something, but we saw them all over the shops. Anyone know if this is still the case?

cakes82 · 10/06/2012 18:07

I have seen something somewhere about it, but afraid can't remember details. I vaguely remember though that they still advise against cot bumpers.

cakes82 · 10/06/2012 18:09

Have found this which suggests an alternative
www.safedreams.co.uk/safety.php

Biscuitsandtea · 10/06/2012 18:53

I never quite got the point of cot bumpers? What are they suppose to do? Just look pretty?

cakes82 · 10/06/2012 19:18

Apparently they are meant to prevent babies limbs going through the cot bars but I think apart from that they are expensive bits of prettiness.

jaggythistle · 10/06/2012 19:22

I have the Airwrap ones - partly to stop the escaping limbs, but also because DS1 used to sleep in all sorts of weird positions with hi head against the bars and get dents!

They are nice and padded and breathable, not especially decorative though. :)

TheLittleFriend · 10/06/2012 19:35

Happy Birthday smegs xx

fluffy the official line from the FSID Charity about cot bumpers is that "research has shown that they have neither good nor bad effects in terms of cot death risk". Like jaggy though, I used the airwrap ones as they were more breathable. They look pretty much the same product as what cakes link shows. I found them very useful when dd got to about 4 months and started rolling around in the cot. She'd wake up when she banged the side or wedged limbs through the bars.

ScrambledSmegs · 10/06/2012 21:47

Aw, thanks all. I had a lovely day, despite no sleep. Went out for a meal with friends and assorted children, and was spoilt by my family and DH. Very happy.

Fluff I'm glad you've found the pram. It feels good, doesn't it?! Hope it comes back on offer soon. Have you signed up to the M&P mailing list so you can get notification of their offers and sales?

re: bumpers - I think it's advised not to use them in the first few months when the baby can't roll away easily, in case of suffocation. We didn't use them till DD was about 1, when she was going through some sort of head-banging phase Confused The cot bedding set came with bumpers so we thought we'd use it then. The airwrap ones look good if you have a wriggly sleeper.

Ninja heartburn sounds nasty Sad I hope it passes soon. I'm very impressed at your level of preparedness, you must be all ready to go now!

Can I ask a question? Do you think it's possible to get a chest infection at the start of a cold? I was fine yesterday, but today I have lost my voice completely and my lungs feel constricted. I could barely walk to the restaurant today as I got so short of breath. One of my friends asked where my inhaler was, I'm not even asthmatic! I just feel so wiped out and terrible Sad

Happy birthday Smegs! Rather late in the day, sorry. Glad you had a lovely day in the end :-)

So glad you've found the pram Fluffy!

Taking note of all the wise words on cot bumpers. DD is currently in a basket, and when I do plonk her in the cot she's too transfixed by her mobile to move.. But she's a wriggler and I suspect she'll be a headbanger too!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 11/06/2012 09:13

Thanks everyone! I was a bit Hmm as all the bedding sets seemed to come with them coz they're pretty but I definitely won't use one now Wink and will look into a breathable one once s/he's older and wrigglier :)

Thanks smegs - I did sign up for the newsletter . I expect it is possible - I'd pop to the GP if its causing you problems, and they can have a listen?

NinjaChipmunk · 11/06/2012 09:47

smegs no harm in getting checked, especially if its come on so soon.
fluff did you actually buy any baby bits in the end or was it just a trip to check things out and see what you wanted?
Off for a haircut at lunchtime but spending the rest of the day slobbing I think till the shoppings delivered.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 11/06/2012 09:49

My sister bought dragonfruit some babygrows, muslins and a hooded towel - but I just bought DH some socks (not from M&P!) :o It was just a trip to try the pram out and make sure I liked it, really :)

NinjaChipmunk · 11/06/2012 10:01

aw lovely! I have now washed all our baby stuff and its all sat in the moses basket in our room. I heartily recommend grobags by the way. DS always loved his and slept really well in them and you can get some lovely ones.

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 11/06/2012 10:10

We were looking at those and were a but Confused by them (they weren't around when my sister had hers). Do they wear anything inside of them? Don't they get cold arms? And I was worried they might wriggle down into them?

whimsicalname · 11/06/2012 10:26

Happy birthday smegs. Hope you're feeling better.

How exciting to have all the little clothes all washed and sorted ninja. I do love a rummage in the little clothes. Don't do what I did though with your last big shop! I always go so over due that i've we've eaten all the food and have a baby into an empty kitchen.

Fluff, I second the grow bags. They're toasty snug and lovely. You use them as bedding rather than clothes, so mine would go in in a vest and babygrow / pjs and then into the cot. If it's cold they get an extra blanky on top. they tend not to wriggle down into them as they have shoulder straps, and don't get as tangled in them as they would in blankets.

I made a lovely thing for DS3 from the Lotta Lansjotter book 'simple sewing for babies' or something similar. It's a kind of sleeping pouch, which does look a little like something you would embalm an egyptian in, but was very cosy. I'd really recommend that book for lovely home made stuff.

How's the new job going by the way? Is it the same as the old one?

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 11/06/2012 11:10

Yep pretty identical whims but for less money lol :o

Thanks for that - They look easier to use than swaddling/blankets etc so will defo look into a few.

Another thing I've been pondering is temperature - baby is due in Oct so it will be a cold period. I know you're supposed to keep the house about 18 degrees through the day but what about at night? We wouldn't usually keep heating on iyswim? is possibly over-thinking things

NinjaChipmunk · 11/06/2012 11:28

Grin Basically baby wears one extra layer to you. I really wouldn't worry too much about temp. DS is an Oct baby, he wore a vest, sleep suit and grobag in bed. If we felt our room/ then his room once he outgrew basket was too cold we'd just pop a cellular blanket on top but he was always fine. Is your house warm or cold/ draughty?

whimsicalname · 11/06/2012 11:50

We had the opposite prob, with 3 summer babies. I got really stressed making sure they weren't over heating. You need to check the back of the neck, rather than extremities (hands/noses/toesies) to do temperature.

But hang on, you're getting all stressed about bridges yet to cross! It might be a lovely balmy autumn, and I'm fairly sure mini-fluff is just about the right temp where it is now!

FluffyJawsOfDoom · 11/06/2012 12:08

:o :o whims these are the must-know questions that fly around my head at 3am when I wake up with hip cramp and can't get back to sleep!! I'm just trying not to freak out over how little I know about babies!

Our house is a bit draughty but I'm planning on keeping moses baskets/cots away from windows iykwim, so shouldn't be too bad. It does get cold at night, I sleep with a zillion blankets which DH kicks off ......

whimsicalname · 11/06/2012 12:39

I understand entirely fluff. DS3 was due about the time of the election, and I got completely fixated with having to have a hospital birth, and a tory candidate coming to do promotional stuff. I couldn't work out whether to talk to them and be challenging, or dress the baby in a labour tshirt. Inevitably, the situation never arose!

Which pram did you chose btw? It's lovely having a new pram.

clickingtock · 11/06/2012 12:57

Hello busybees. Ninja living all the prep. Hope you get to buy that house too. Tricky times means you may get a bargain.

Send us a link to pram Fluff. And you get a free thermometer with your grobag. They, are fab as can be,worn in buggies and carseats too - they have flaps. And yes I had an amazing HB in water with DS. Midwife arrived when he was crowning so was never even checked for dikation etc. Totally drug free. Hypnobirthing was my secret, weapon. As long as no one talked to ne I was v happy and, quiet. Midwife got told off for wearing noisy shoes in our wooden floor is all. She arrived at 9am and was able to make her Sunday lunch appointment so pretty good, experience for everyone. Would live another like this but realise each birth is different.

Smegs happy belated bathday. Sounds lively. How us your chest.

All quiet here. Big work bid and bk broadband again. Boo.
