I did NCT last time but won't do any refresher classes this time.

Our little NCT group set our own guidelines about confidentiality and being non-judgemental.

I personally felt that the class teacher was judgemental however about anyone not proposing to take the maximum maternity leave they could stretch to and the effects that not breast-feeding would undoubtedly have on babies.

She also made epidurals sound like a very bad idea (effects on baby) and c-sections, well they were the end of the world although she did say that statistically at least one of us would end up having a c-section.

It was fun despite this, as I kept an open mind during the classes and I am still in touch with two of the mums from our group.

Woodelf · 14/03/2006 16:59

Welcome marls!

Am trying to enrol for antenatal yoga classes locally as they sound really good and I feel soooo unfit right now. Hope will help with later on re backache etc and ensuring my posture is good. I used to do lots of yoga and loved the relaxation bits the most!Smile

compo · 14/03/2006 17:06

Welcome to Tassis Smile I went to hospital antenatal classes last time so won't bother this time. There weren't any 2nd time mums there so I guess they are really only for 1st time mums. Didn't bother with NCT as you have to pay.

compo · 14/03/2006 18:13

can I ask a thick question? Do you think prawn toast is okay to eat? I figure yes because it's been fried so all bacteria would be dead?

Marls001 · 14/03/2006 19:12

Hi Compo - I'd say definitely; I think the mercury content is the only issue, & you'd have to eat quite a bit for that! (I ate salmon roe when pg with my 1st once; my favorite & couldn't pass it by ...)

Was worried abt my peanut consumption last pg - ds has excema - but just told at dr. appt. yesterday there's no correlation they can find between peanuts and excema, & that it's okay for me to eat any & all nuts while I'm pg (no food allergies on either side of family). That was good news for me - I'm craving Brazil nuts this time.

Anyone else walking around feeling so out of breath??

compo · 14/03/2006 19:14

Thanks Marls - that's really interesting about the peanut thing, have been craving crunchy nut conrnflakes, lol!!
I've started feeling out of breath too but not sure that's because I haven't been doing nay exercise and have been eating like a pig for the last 3 months!!

tassis · 14/03/2006 19:17

Thanks for the lovely welcome everyone!

I've definately got a bit of a bump, but I think that may be down to the amount of rubbish I'm eating. 3 packets of crips at a time is a regualr ( and i never usually eat crips).

Also still very tired. Ds (almost 3) still has a daytime nap so i try to rest then too.

Don't think I'll bother with antenatal classes this time though I'd be tempted to consider an NCT refresher if there was such a thing. i did the hospital ones last time and thought they were pretty good. I'll join the hospital ones for one week this time because I need to have the tour of the hospital as we've moved to a new area.

Marls001 · 14/03/2006 20:01

Hi Woodelf - Wish there were some good yoga classes in this area, but there just aren't.

Yoga is great; I really miss it - especially vinyasa yoga. Can't trust myself to do it safely right now (might forget and try twisting)! Still running and lifting weights ... trying to find the place between feeling disappointed I'm not able to do quite what I once was, and enjoying going easy b/c there's a baby involved now! I'm feeling I just look "fat", not obvious I'm pregnant yet, have gained 1/2 stone into a little "gut."

Hellkat - We've really enjoyed this area! Just moved here! Reading post abt. your daughter ... I have a sister who is 12 yrs younger than me. My parents just decided to have a "second family." Must have been difficult - teenagers & a toddler! Funny how we don't understand these things until becoming parents ourselves. Smile

Marls001 · 14/03/2006 20:15

Normsnockers - LOL - Our class teacher was judgemental, too - made anyone electing NOT to have an epidural sound crazy! Grin

In States, 60% get epidurals on average. By choice I was not one of those - had to have pitocin, though. Will do it without epidural again this time! (And hopefully without pitocin.)

Angeliz · 14/03/2006 20:37

Hi all, homemama, i thought you were just incredibly rude and offhandGrin WinkHope you feel better soon. i seem to post quite sporadically too whenever the pregnancy is on my mind. Great news about your scan!

Welcome to Tassis and MarlsSmile

I'm o.k, don't know how much weight i've put on but a canny bit i can tell you. Had a bit of a worry in Costco the other day when i seemed to get like a pulled muscle type feeling very low right in my abdomen. DP was more worried but i think it was from carrying dd2 around alot on my hip. She's just turned one. (That makes me feel sad even to type, as if i'm blaming her and i foresee lots of guilt coming my way)
Anyway, was fine after about half an hour.
See the midwife for second time next week.

HellKat · 15/03/2006 08:24

Morning all.
I've been looking into pg yoga too and found a place nearby that does classes so hopefully going to check them out.
I've cracked nuts of all kinds so far especially with raisins. Every week I've either scoffed a bag of those or chilli/seaweed peanuts from the health food shop. Mmmmmm.
Prawn toast is cool, they just get funny about any shellfish incase of food poisoning. I always adore seafood, pg or not lol and have eaten it in abundance. Great thing is you can tell by smell if it's iffy whether it's raw or cooked. Mmmm could happily go a plate of king prawns now Wink

Have a great day all.

Lysettes · 15/03/2006 08:38

Morning everyone!

I was thinking of joining a local NCT class but it's soooooo expensive (ours is £200!), so I think I'm just going to stick with the hospital run course which looks great.

compo that sounds like a great idea Smile anyone else eat sushi before pg and really miss it now?

marls - I'm shattered going up the stairs off the tube in the mornings. Am on pills for high b pressure and the consultant's said no strenous exercise - and I used to run a lot... Think I'm just very unfit now Sad

Have a great day everyone!
xxx

Bella23 · 15/03/2006 09:02

Morning all

Well NCT woman rang last night so think I am going to give it a go - thanks for heads up, will prepare myself for some judgement!

I looked into joining a pregnancy yoga class near me and there are 2 but during the day, so I guess there is the assumption that all pregnant ladies don't work !! Very annoying!

Oh dear, all this talk of weight gain, I definately think I am officially a fat knacker!!Blush I seem to be piling it on everywhere!
Oh well just keep focusing on my diet and excersise routine once the bub is born.......well I can dream can't I !!Grin

HellKat · 15/03/2006 09:12

Lol!!!! At fat knacker. I've always been slim apart from when I'm pg. My backside resembles a cellulite covered beanbag Wink. Thank goodness my bump's visible so at least I look pg now instead of a rotund heffer.

Lysettes · 15/03/2006 10:37

I have got a pregnancy yoga dvd - it's good and it has different levels for different stages. In my area all the classes are during the day as well - agree v annoying!

All this talk of classes has reminded me to go off and book my hospital ones - memory like a seive at the moment Smile

Bella23 · 15/03/2006 10:55

Lysettes - might get a dvd one then as at risk of ceasng up soon if I don't start doing some proper excercise!

Normsnockers · 15/03/2006 11:04

Lysettes,

We did NCT classes three years ago as they were on Saturdays which was convenient when dh worked away all week and wouldn't be able to get to the NHS free ones. The cost was only £80 (or it might have been £60, can't remember exactly).

Shock at £200.

Marls, am I right in saying that in the USA they say it's O.K to eat peanuts despite allergies in the family and here they are advising us not to eat them if there is a history of allergies ?

There has been an article in the UK press about the fact the the UK midwives professional body says that women should have to pay £500 for epidurals as they are unecessary and make the labour more complicated. Don't know how that would go down in the US if 60% of ladies have them over there. I know it's different as medical health cover pays for most people.

compo · 15/03/2006 11:18

ooh yes, it's good to get a US perspective on things!! What do they say over there about alcohol? Are we just told not to because we're a nation of binge drinkers and if they say a bit we'll go mad and have loads?!!

Lysettes · 15/03/2006 11:32

Norms - it gets even better with those NCT classes - they aren't running any over the summer so I have to go to a 4 week class in June which is really early for me - obviously no one in my area has babies in september Angry

DH is a Kiwi and they are much stricter about eating and drinking than in the UK - I read some guidelines the other day saying that two small glasses of wine a week are ok, but in NZ no alcohol as soon as you find out, even no going to smoky bars or anything like that! And as for food.....it's like having a member of the food police in the house! Any tenuous link and it's banned! It's plain steamed veg and brown rice for me for the next few months Sad

Bella23 · 15/03/2006 12:29

Lysettes - yes NCT seem to think that giving birth in Septemeber is inconvenient as I am having to go to a class slightly out of my catchment area because most NCT teachers take the summer off an annual leave!

So it would seem that round here you either give birth from October onwards and if pregnant do not work.........mmm I must be such a freak !!Shock

OOh yes Marls, please tell us all US guidelines.

Can relate to the food police but on a different track - DH now thinks that I cross the road dangerously and should use zebra crossings whenever possible!! Very sweet but when out with him its sometimes like being treated like a toddler with him grabbing my hand when we cross the road!

pol25 · 15/03/2006 14:04

Hey there ladies!
Had my scan on monday and bubba all well!!! Except two ittle probs, bubba 2 due on my dd's birthday, how bad for timing although now praying it will come early or late!!!
Also found a fibroid which they said they would monitor. Not sure what it means really!!! Read in a midwifery book they only occur in caucasian women 1% and mostly over 35, i'm only 25! Feeling alittle worried the more I read. Wondering if thats why I bled early on??? Anyone had that prob?
As for peanuts, I ate them with dd, as did not realise I wasn't supposed too and crave peanut butter on toast. This time I haven't but have had the odd pistachio. Not wanted a drop of alcohol, felt too sick! So I haven't had a prob with the no alcohol thing.

Lysettes · 15/03/2006 15:29

Bella - tell me about it - I get exactly the same thing. DH also actually dared to tell me that I don't know how to cook sausages properly about 3 weeks ago!!!

Pol25 - I think it's like so many other things in pg now - as long as they know about them they can monitor you and look after you well. It might have caused the bleeding I guess. I got mother and baby magazine a few weeks ago (how sad am I???) and there was an article about it - I think it may be the current issue - might be worth a look. I guess the best thing is just to ask as many questions as you can Smile

mabel1973 · 15/03/2006 16:02

Hi everyone!
Pol - good to hear all's well with the bubba. I would speak to your midwife about the fibroids thing, otherwise you will only get anxious about it.
Hellkat - am intrigued by seaweed peanuts - have never come across them, but like the sound of them - prob v. healthy too!

Just come back from playgroup (again) don't worry ladies - nothing awful happened to me - just DS he got pushed by an older boy and went absolutely flying he was v. v. upset bless him.

Have been getting a slight stabbing pain today I am sure it is nothng untowards and I'm sure I got pains like this with DS and was probably much more paranoid about it.
I have got my triple test and monday and will get to hear the heartbeat - at long last! :)

appyday · 15/03/2006 16:51

Hi everyone, 2 days to go til scan, maybe then I'll feel pregnant. Was so unsure the other day that I did a 2nd pg testBlush, funnily enough it was +ve. Still the only sign is the bigger bra size, no weight gain, no nothing. I shall be so relieved when Friday gets here and hpefully I see something happening.
Off the subject entirely, I am feeling quite shocked and a little pleased with myself for going to work today after 4 months off with depression. I did shed a few tears and I was petrified walking back in (all those people looking at me) but I went, nobody said a word and hopefully tomorrow will be a bit easier. Just wanted to tell someone " I DID IT!"

mabel1973 · 15/03/2006 17:01

well done appyday - that must have been really hard, but I am sure it will get easier with every day that goes by.
Also good luck with your scan.
I have also considered doing another test, even tnough i had my scan weeks ago, as I don't 'feel' pregnant, even though I have massive boobs and ever increasing bump - so you are not alone!
