Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
goldene · 25/04/2012 11:59

I told several people at work very early - I've had two miscarriages since my last child so I told them it's very uncertain - but we are planning next year's teaching and it's not fair really to let them think I'd definitely be around when that's unlikely (and getting unlikelier by the week :) ). And I told my mum and dad, figuring that if I did have another miscarriage I'd want their support. Obviously my mum is fidgeting herself to death, and my father is only worried about where we'd put another child in our small London flat. And I told a close friend for similar reasons to my parents.

I haven't told the rest of the family, or my little girl (who just accepts without question that mummy is sick all the time), or work more generally, or my husband's family. Next week after the scan, I think.

Detective I had a homebirth last time (my first) and never saw a doctor other than a GP because I was getting migraines. Had no trouble from anyone. I would not go to a hospital unless someone had a very good reason (I don't consider being old a good reason, btw). If I'm right about this being twins I will have to re-evaluate obviously. I had a horrid midwife throughout but she didn't attend the birth, happily. I banked on her not being on call. My labour was six hours from noticing a contraction to birth, and was a really positive experience. I had a little gas and air, but it was fine. If the second birth is easier I'm unlikely to make it to hospital anyway!!!

NervousAt20 · 25/04/2012 12:14

Thanks yellow think I will pop out for some kiwis Blush

Agree with the comments about how on here everyone has their own views and opinions and there is always support! This thread has deffinatly helped me a fair few times and reassured me if I've been worried about anything, when other people just seem to say don't worry it's all fine and make you wan to scream! On other threads to that I've been on, some on the support people get is amazing

Anyway wondering what are people thoughts/opinions on anti stretch mark creams?

applepieinthesky · 25/04/2012 12:14

daisychain I am currently under consultant-led care because of a family history of blood disorders. I?ve been told they will do some tests and if they establish I?m low-risk then it?s very easy to switch back to midwife-led care and I would then be able to have a homebirth.

TheDetective · 25/04/2012 12:15

Daisy No, being consultant led won't make any difference to you having a homebirth. It is your right to have a homebirth anyway. It is just that many obstacles are put in the way of those who are 'high risk'. I'm just refusing to enter in to discussion about it. End of :)

Goldene My SIL is due in 4 weeks, and she had a quick first labour, very straightforward. She is still planning on a hospital birth this time, but I just have this strong feeling that this baby will end up coming while she is still at home, and I've been briefing her about what to do without actually telling her what I think will happen. I've no reason why I think this will happen, just a gut instinct. I have a feeling I may get a frantic call in the middle of the night soon....!

ValiumQueen · 25/04/2012 12:23

Just been to morrisons and there were no 50p satsumas! I did get some clemantines though. Had kippers for lunch as it was the only thing I fancied. Very odd.

TheDetective · 25/04/2012 12:28

Clementines - thought they were out at christmas! Strange lol!

I WANT TANGERINES! But the weather... I am not leaving this house til I absolutely have to! Still in PJ's and hoodie... ahhhh!

Might go soak in the bath now, followed by a shower to wash my hair (long, needs conditioning, bath is just a nightmare for washing it!) just because I can! Grin

3 hours to kill...

daisychain76 · 25/04/2012 12:29

Thanks apple and detective Well, fingers crossed I can move back to midwife-led care and get my home birth in the end if all goes well at the first scan.

nervousat20 I am never 100% convinced about the stretch-mark creams. With DS my stretch marks just appeared, pretty much overnight, around 26 weeks despite me slopping plenty of cream around. Having said that, I have just bought some fairly cheap stuff from Boots because I guess they could have been even worse without the cream.

TheDetective · 25/04/2012 12:33

I got my first stretch marks at 9 years old :(

Cream was gonna do nothing for me when pregnant! I didn't get any until right at the end when the weight piled on (it seems) and then got some really bad ones. I think I was 40 weeks.

If you are predisposed to them, there isn't a cream in the world that will stop them...

justonemorecake · 25/04/2012 12:37

Hi, I haven't posted since the first thread - I just couldn't keep up!
Congrats to all those who have had good news at their scans. Mine was due to be on 2nd May.
However, this morning I had some cramps and quite heavy brown discharge. Luckily the doctor was really lovely, and I'm booked in for a scan tomorrow morning. I'm feeling quite scared, but I've seen other people have had some brown/bloody discharge or spotting and everything has turned out ok.
Now I'll just have to spend today trying not to constantly worry about it...

ValiumQueen · 25/04/2012 12:38

I agree with the cream being a waste of money. It is genetic. If your mum got them, then you will. A moisturising cream is good though as skin will get dry and sore.

ValiumQueen · 25/04/2012 12:39

Justone fingers crossed for your scan tomorrow x

Stuntnun · 25/04/2012 13:24

FC for you too JustOne I hope everything goes well tomorrow.

OP posts:
Chunkychicken · 25/04/2012 13:49

Valium I think that's an over-simplification of it. My Mum & sister have both had horrendous stretch marks from pg 1 but I didn't get any. I am not bigger than my sister normally & wasn't exactly tiny with my DD (I seem to recall I put on about 16kg!). Yet, I got 3 stretch marks in total - 2 on a boob (DD to a G cup will encourage that!! but they've faded away completely now) & 1 on my thigh, so none on my tummy at all. My DM & DSis both have crepe paper textured stomachs!!

I did slap on the anti-stretch mark cream like there was no tomorrow BUT I was bought them by my MIL so didn't actually chose to spend money on them. I think I found them of most benefit later on when the skin felt stretched and got itchy. Otherwise, I would say they make no difference; if you have dark/olive skin, you are far more likely to get them, cream won't stop them unfortunately.

Which reminds me, I better start slapping it on after my shower, just to make absolutely sure either way - I mean, why risk it??!!! Grin

FX Justone.

NervousAt20 · 25/04/2012 13:52

So what make of cream did you use chunky think I'm going to try it and if it doesn't work then oh well and if it does then it's a bonus

EnchantedPand · 25/04/2012 13:52

YellowWellies I didn't realise Dragon babies were so desired until my whole family hinting how great it would be to have a Dragon baby this year and how it's a chinese leap year so I get more time. "So what if it's next year?" "Oooooooh no!! That's the year of the snake. You don't want a snake. You'll just have to wait another year to have one!" Hilarious. They're not even usually superstitious. Needless to say only my parents know at the moment.

Ohh a dragon baby how cool! Can use a dragon theme for baby room Grin n baby shower Grin

Detective you will have to share all the advice with us as well! (sil having baby at home). In the summer a wife of a friend gave birth at home with her first baby! Unplanned. And I'm terrified of it happening to us. Personally I wouldn't want a home birth, wouldn't want to worry about the mess, we have cream carpets everywhere lol. Also we live with DHs parents. And I'd not want them anywhere near me Blush. In fact I was wondering how I can stay in hospital longer to get space from them Sad.

ShellyBobbs · 25/04/2012 15:20

This will be my second little dragon then :)

justonemorecak Good luck with your scan, will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Nervous My stomach looks like something that doesn't even resemble an organic being! I got boob and hip stretch marks through puberty and I used every stretch mark cream going with my first and though I was doing really well until 32 weeks and it was like something off a horror film lol. My other 2 pregnancies I just used baby oil after each bath and shower and a moisturiser in between and I got exactly the same result.

Had my scan today, little somersaulting babs in there. Hubby asked 3 times to double check it wasn't twins, I think the sonographer was getting her hair off with him a bit :) She did seem rather concerned about how full my bladder was though and when she scanned me it was up to my belly button, I wondered why it was so high in a morning :)

Detective What is vbac and synto? Blush I'm under shared care due to my thyroid, the ob came to see me today and what a complete and utter waste of time it was! She was telling me they will see what my blood results will be like in May and if they are OK they'll decrease my meds. Sorry love, you won't, it's taken me to print evidence off the internet and show it to my GP for me to get it increased despite my 'dodgy' blood test results! I'm signing myself back to the Midwifes after I'm 28 weeks anyway. Hope your scan went OK today.

Hope your scan is OK too Nebbo.

I'm 11 weeks today but they said I'm 11+4, I'm not, I know the exact night this little bean got side-tracked by the swimmers :)

Good luck for tomorrow Valium and anyone else not on the list.

WaitingForMe · 25/04/2012 15:33

Ooh I'm quite taken with the idea of a dragon theme for the naming ceremony now BabyGT.

WaitingForMe · 25/04/2012 15:33

GTBaby even Blush

Chunkychicken · 25/04/2012 15:54

Think it was the AVENT one Nervous from Boots or Mothercare, then the cocoa butter one... can't remember the name & can't be arsed to walk upstairs to check. Quite a well known brand, American I think, again Boots stock it.Confused

applepieinthesky · 25/04/2012 17:10

Ooh a dragon themed baby shower. I like it. I read the dragon's lucky colour is yellow so sticking with yellow for the nursery

Thanks chunky

ShellyBobbs · 25/04/2012 17:21

Apple Do people over here really have baby showers? Thought it was just an American thing, I don't know anyone who has had one.

Got all the maternity pants off ebay, they are being put back on, they are horrid :( one pair looked like they had been worn for at least 5 years without being changed, all bobbled and wrecked, don't know how people dare put stuff like that on. Only paid 99p for them so they went straight in the bin.
