Welcome home Fliss!!

Try not to stress, Spanner. I know it's hard but you certainly haven't failed anyone, in fact you sound like you're doing a damn good job at the moment.

Had midwife appointment this morning along with first sweep - a little uncomfortable but nothing compared to the egg collection / embryo transfer process that got him in there in the first place!!

She was very concerned that he doesn't appear to have grown at all over the last 2 weeks so we're off for a growth scan tomorrow afternoon. We had one at 32 wks and she was quite blase about it, but genuinely seemed concerned this time.

Oh well there's not a fat lot we can do about it at this stage so we'll just have to see what shows up tomorrow.

spannermary · 16/04/2012 17:37

Thanks for all your support everyone! Had more blood & 24h urine results back and they all show deterioration - and pre-eclampsia not good. Also had meeting with the Senior Consultant who talked me through what everything meant.

As the situation has now changed - it's more than just high bp and being 40+8 I've decided to go for it and take the induction.

He's talked through what can be done for my anxiety and for pain relief, and the mental health team are looking at postnatal support in case I need it, due to my concerns about PND. I'll get an early epi to help keep my bp under control.

Although it's not what I would have chosen, it's great that at least things are going to get moving now- and I should have a beautiful son by my 35th birthday (Thursday). What better birthday present?

I'm also still glad I kicked up a fuss and now they know my concerns and can put extra support in place if need be.

Just had dinner and now off for a walk with DH before the VE and pessary at about 7pm.

I hope you all understand my decision: the results really made the decision for us in the end.

Wish me luck!!

oltob · 16/04/2012 18:02

Good luck spannermary thinking of you. I may well be going through the same thing in 3 weeks time (I don't think I'll feel able to turn down induction this time due to my age) Hopefully the pessary will do the trick and I would recommend them breaking your waters, I had that with DD, resisted at first but they did it when I was 7-8cm and I was at 10cm about an hour later could have happened anyway I suppose. Try and keep as active as possible too - get yourself a ball if you can.
Hoping it all goes well for you, there have been some good induction stories on here so too so please try and concentrate on the positives.

HollyPockett · 16/04/2012 18:08

spanner your baby, your decision. I think you should be proud of yourself for not doing what they told you to do straight away and for putting up a fight and making your and DH feelings known. It's not an easy decision, but I think under the circumstances, you're doing the right thing.

Good luck and keep us posted

mummylivmade · 16/04/2012 18:16

Best of luck spanner

Bananna1 · 16/04/2012 18:33

Good luck Spanner - if things were deteriorating you had no choice did you? But the strength, honesty and determination you have shown means you have a full team of people waiting to help you should you need it. But you may not!!

Good Luck :)

Pitmountainpony · 16/04/2012 18:46

Emsgale
Huge congrats. Love the name...Mae was on our shortlist too, so pretty.
Ah the day you bring your baby home....I am already wistful and covertous of the experience all of you on here who have yet to have your babies, have to come.
My ds at only 16 days is already losing that newborn quality that is so special and do transitory.......you all have every magical day ahead of you guys.

marshmallowpies · 16/04/2012 19:21

spanner will be thinking of you. Really hope it all goes well & you are holding that baby any day now!

Thaleia · 16/04/2012 19:30

Hi there, feel absolutely deflated at the moment. Had my normal hospital appointment today and found out the the little one turned breech and there is no chance in turning him as he's already quite far down in my pelvis. How could this happen within one week????

Already saw a consultant who was lingering around and he said, I would have 3 options: c-s, he could go in with his hand (fist!) and try to push the baby out and turn him ... like I'm a cow ... or breech birth. However, downside with being a first time mum is that I might be very tight and if the baby is stuck there might not be enough time for a emergency c-s and he might suffocate.

I'm not sorry for not having an amazing birth experience, doing it all natural but really worried about the fact, that's is just hubby and I, so I won't have any help at all, that I have serious issues afterwards as I already have a bad back and having c-s is really bad for that reason. And prob most worst that I won't bond with our baby, or find it really difficult to do so. I already worry so much about things going wrong, I feel I hold back loving him a bit just in case, things turn out not ok.

Crying again .... but I guess, that's live, everything is picture perfect till it isn't any more.

marshmallowpies · 16/04/2012 19:55

Thaleia oh, what a tough choice...in your shoes (as I nearly was & still might be) I think I would be opting for CS, even if recovery time is longer.

If your back is going to give you difficulties sitting up/lifting baby perhaps they will keep you in a bit longer so you can continue to get nursing support? Or can you get any temporary home help when DH goes back to work?

Flisspaps · 16/04/2012 20:25

spannermary best of luck tonight Smile

Thaleia Sad that things can't happen the way you had hoped. Hopefully the support you can access will help. Best of luck - soon you'll see your beautiful newborn and they will love you unconditionally, however they come into the world Smile

spannermary · 16/04/2012 20:38

Thaleia what a difficult decision...it's a real shock to the system when all your birthing plans are thrown out the window with a late change of circumstance, isn't it? I will be thinking of you...I know you'll make the right decision for you, DP & little one.

I have had my first pessary, and been monitored for an hour. No tightenings yet... The good news is the baby's head is really low down apparently, which should reduce my chance of a protracted labour. However, the cervix, whilst soft, isn't open yet.

Going to try and get some rest now because who knows when it'll all kick off.

Night all!

Nordicmom · 16/04/2012 20:55

Good luck Spanner!
Thaleia , I'd take the planned ceserean . The emergency one is so much more taxing on your body as far as I understand from my friends that have had both. I had an emergency one so that's my only experience. Afterwards I had my husband for the first week and then my mom for the second and then I was on my own. I found that after the first week you're already in much better shape so if you have help for 1-2 weeks then it's not so bad . If you choose a planned CS you'll feel in much more control. With DS I had the ecv and they successfully turned him but ended up with the emcs I so tried to avoid ( also worried about the managing without much help etc) due to a failed induction. Felt completely out of control and pretty much everything went wrong . In hindsight going for the planned CS and not bothering with ecv and induction might have been wiser. Anyhow DS arrived safely so that's all that matters! Good luck with what ever you'll decide. Ps . Apparently nowadays the planned CS are not any riskier than vaginal births so no need to worry about that:)! We've got a CS ahead of us too with our surrogate next mon , trying not to worry about her and our baby ...

Nordicmom · 16/04/2012 20:58

Ps I had no problems with bonding with DS even though also the bf went wrong after just a week . Loved him from the moment I laid my slightly fuzzy eyes on him in the theatre ( and before really:) ) .

UniPsychle · 16/04/2012 20:59

Congratulations to Emsgale, Fliss, justhayley. I am Shock at the size of your boy, Fliss. A thread record that I suspect is unlikely to be broken!

Huge good wishes to spanner hope you feel better now the decision is made; IMHO there's nothing worse than uncertaintity.

Thaleia i was in a v similar position with my first. I chose elcs for breech. DP went back to work after 2 wks and i had no support from family as mum was caring for my terminally ill dad and DP's mum died when i was 6 months pregnant. I won't lie and say it was easy but the physical aspects of looking after a newborn were not as demanding as i had thought - i spent a lot of time sitting on my bum bfing. Also had a bad back and whilst the c-section wasn't great for it, i was conscious of that and so arranged things to make it as easy as possible. There's no compulsion to push a pram for miles until you're up to it and on-line grocery shopping is fab. Not sure whether c-section does effect bonding. I did take a while to bond with my first but think it was the shock and anxiety of being a first time mum. Just had another c-section for 2nd and have bonded straight away. Good luck whatever you choose.

Bunsouttheoven · 16/04/2012 21:04

spanner I take my hat off to you my lovely for showing strength & determination in a very stressful situation.

The best of luck, it will all seem worth it when you are holding your baby.

thaleia sorry to hear things are hard for you too. The responsibility of making big decisions at this stage is truly so hard. I've no experience of breech birth but can honestly say I have not found bonding with my baby any harder after a cs than a natural birth. I am sore but breastfeeding has been fine, milk came in just as quickly as with vbs. These babies are amazing, even through the sleeplessness & tears they still make us love them so.

Pitmountainpony · 16/04/2012 22:23

Thaleia. Sorry you are in that position. Just had a planned c section.....very straight forward and calm. Honestly if itbis your first you can just snuggle up in bed and then in the sofa a lot. Babies sleep a lot so apart from the back issue, I personally think the c section birth is a very positive one for many mums.
You could try the turning if you really want a vaginal birth though. All that matters is baby and you are kept healthy really.

spannermary · 17/04/2012 06:28

I am so unbelievably happy to announce our beautiful baby boy, Bill, was born at 2.47 this morning weighing 7lb 3oz.

He is perfect. Labour progressed really rapidly from pessary at 7.15, contractions starting at 11.15pm. We didn't have time for an epidural!

He instinctively latched on during skin to skin, and is now trying the other boob for size!

So happy GrinGrinGrin

JambalayaCodfishPie · 17/04/2012 06:49

Congratulations Spanner, truly deserved.

Enjoy.

spannermary Well done you Grin Welcome baby Bill Smile

Flisspaps · 17/04/2012 08:56

Urgh! I'd forgotten how crap telly was through the night!

DS fed pretty much all night, DH ended up in DD's bed for a bit, DD ended up coming in with us for a bit, and the only one who didn't get sleep was me! That's a lie actually, think I dozed from 5-7. Oh the joys!

DS is now quiet as a church mouse and not feeding for the first time in hours.

We registered him yesterday (the Register Office have a room in the hospital most days) so he is officially Frank Edward Smile
