My hospital does nuchal as standard at 1st scan so I'm having it. Was a bit shocked at midwife appt to be asked about testing as it hadn't crossed my mind but as it's nothing intrusive I think I'd rather have it than not.

FriendofDorothy · 26/04/2012 17:46

I am thinking we might turn it down. I am not sure what to do for the best to be honest!

kateand2boys · 26/04/2012 17:49

Welcome to all the newbies
clueless so sorry for your loss
clarella lucky you! I'm not immune to chicken pox and had to have injections each time I was exposed. I didn't get any time off at all

vege do it! I would and I am needle phobic

cod poor you, I dread throwing up in public, I'm not sure my pelvic floor is up to it Blush

I am also very short tempered, year 6 got it both barrels this afternoon, ds2 did yesterday morning and again this morning and dh all last weekend.

I also seem to be worse at driving at the momentn
Feel shocking today, very queasy, but without actually being sick

kateand2boys · 26/04/2012 17:54

FOD it wasn't offered with either of my boys and I didn't pay for one. I was only in my twenties then though. I'm 34 now so I'm glad it's offered now, although my gp said I still wasn't considered that old.

PurplePidjin · 26/04/2012 18:02

I won't. I wouldn't terminate for anything other than life-threatening, and know many fantastic people that others class as disabled. The vast majority of sn can't be detected in utero anyway so I don't see the point at least on a personal level!

NarcolepsyQueen · 26/04/2012 18:26

Personally, I got tested the last 2 times. I wanted to have time to prepare myself if something was detected. We would definitely keep the baby - just would reather have some time to get my head around it, and prepare the other DC.

Barbeasty · 26/04/2012 18:29

FOD- I guess it depends how old you are, as the risk increases with age, and what you'd do with the information. If you don't think you'd terminate a pregnancy for Downs, then the test would only be so you could decide whether to have further testing which carries a risk of miscarriage, and if you don't think you'd take that risk then it probably isn't worth the £200!

I'm in the system now, with the lovely midwife I had last time. Got the full booking in next weekend. It all seems very real now.

Chloe55 · 26/04/2012 19:03

I have the choice to have it-I choose not to. They only give you a percentage chance and even if it was 50 % that's still 50 % chance it's not, I wouldn't abort so I can't see the point in knowing.

FriendofDorothy · 26/04/2012 19:15

I wouldn't have a termination anyway. We have decided to probably have the basic bloods but not nuchal fold. The only reason for having it would be for planning but I wouldn't go ahead and have amnio anyway so what's the point?

CupOfBrownJoy · 26/04/2012 19:25

that's what I thought dorothy. I'm quite surprised so many on this thread have said they won't have it. I was looking up the stats and apparently 90% do....

mwahmwah · 26/04/2012 19:28

I had nuchal fold last time and will again. From a personal point of view I feel that I would want to know in advance as it would allow me to prepare myself and DC. Each to their own I say, that's why they give u the choice.

I just did a clearblue digi test and its sooo cool compared to the little blue line tests! To see a bugblack andwhite pregnant and 3+ wks since conception makes it so real in a way the line tests don't! Oh what a big fat waste of a tenner ha ha ha! Xxx

mwahmwah · 26/04/2012 19:30

Hi everyone, Just reading back on the nuchal debate. I had it with my dd and I'd have it again and if there was a poor result, I would probably have the second more intrusive test, but I do understand how people feel. I just would rather know.

Got a call today from the epu for a scan. They wanted me to come in today but I was out of town when I got the call and would not have made it back in time, so we're set for Monday afternoon instead.
Now I just have to psyche myself up. Firstly to go back into the room where I was told I'd lost my last pregnancy and then to convince myself all will be well with this one and I'm not going to be told bad news. Although I desperately want the early scan, I am really not looking forward to it. I kind of wish I was at home today so I wouldn't have a whole weekend to chew on it.

whatmess · 26/04/2012 19:54

ps I don't know why morning sickness is named so. I'm fine in the mornings and then it slowly builds into monster by night time. I'm not particularly tired yet but have been going to bed really early just to get away from the horrid feeling that I'm going to puke. And actually doing so doesn't seem to make me feel any better either.

Sorry, self pity party going on in the Messy household Smile.

YikesHereWeGo · 26/04/2012 20:23

Yay, scan date through for 23 May when I'll be 12 weeks on the dot. :) Can't wait. I'm having the combined test (nuchal scan + bloods) and should get the results on that day, a week and a half before our wedding. I'm afraid I'm one of those terrible people who really want to know the result of the nuchal scan and probably wouldn't continue with the pregnancy if it was bad news. My boyf and I talked about it lots before we tried to conceive and that's what we agreed. Sorry if that makes me sound heartless, it's just I'm 37 already so we know there's a higher risk and since my boyf was less than 100% enthusiastic about having kids anyway that's what we agreed. Blush I can't be alone or they wouldn't offer the test... But I admire those that would continue with their pregnancy regardless of the outcome.

Clarella · 26/04/2012 21:09

Hi cupofbrownjoy, scarlet fever is different but maybe check - however try not to worry. (says a worry wort!)

Kate am still slightly shocked! I really wasn't too bothered today but then school only wanted to follow his advice which surprised me.

Doc went in and out and round the houses and concluded the risks were actually small but then said "but I wouldnt be going in tomorrow or next week" as we currently don't know if it's going to spread in the school or if I'm immune, plus its pretty hands on with my bunch (plus drool etc) so greater transmission risk.

Screens - after working with mild downs and also severe downs I had been feeling sad about this. However I also work with children with loads of different difficulties (some more challenging) so while I think DH feels the need for the tests (more to prepare just in case) I'm not fussed as wouldn't affect the outcome and wed have no further tests either way.

That's only my viewpoint from lots of experience (both good and bad) and i totally respect anyone else's choices :)

PrunellaDeVille · 26/04/2012 21:11

Yikes right with you there, it's part of the deal with DH in order to get him on board in the first place.
I feel the need to know as much as i can throughout the process - positives and negatives i'd rather be aware as far as possible.
That goes for finding out the sex too but DH is different there, we're wrangling already over whether to ask or not. I figure (he's unlikely to be able to be present in December) it'd be best to find out together, and not while one of us is drugged up/at the end of a phone/at different times, and therefore best to find out at the 20wk scan (if he can at least turn up for that Hmm)

Clarella · 26/04/2012 21:19

Sorry yikes, didn't read properly. A colleague who's sibling was downs once told me she had a very difficult upbringing due to her sisters difficulties. On the other hand Jo Whiley DJ's with her sister who has downs. I know it would be hard but I also know a lot about working with these kids. Which is a whoooole other ball game to actually being their parent 24/7. So don't feel bad or guilty either way. You have a choice and a right to a choice Xox

twobecomethree · 26/04/2012 21:44

Hi all, please can I join?? Got a BFP on Tuesday just gone, and after a long time of trying DH & I are very excited, but that's tempered with anxiousness on my part about whether it'll all go ok. It doesn't seem possible that everything we've wanted for such a long time could now be coming true! I'm hoping that I'm on the right thread but my estimations put me with a due date 28 Dec - 3 Jan as periods were irregular, so fingers cross an xmas/new year baby - that makes me maybe 5 weeks now.
Haven't really had any other symptons yet - feeling tired and more hungry than usual so it's been interesting reading all your symptons.
So I've made an appointment to see a doctor next week, but people here seem to be talking abot booking in appointments etc - do I not see the gp and instead somehow contact a midwife?? I just presumed go to the doctors! Any advice on this greatly appreciated! x

mwahmwah · 26/04/2012 21:52

I'll be having the nuchal fold check, had it last tine and tine before that they didn't offer it. Its absolutely a choice thing, I wouldn't judge anyone either way. Personally though, I don't think it would be fair on the two children I already have to have to give the new one more attention in the long run than them should the baby have downs.
I remember a friend saying though she loved her (now grown up) down's son more than anything, if she could turn back the clock she would have terminated the pregnancy because of the effect it had on her other children and the pressure on her relationship. Although that sounds very heartless, I admire her honesty and agree it really is a very personal decision.

mwahmwah · 26/04/2012 21:56

Twobecomethree congrats! I'm in Scotland and handily here we can just book to see the midwife at my surgery without even seeing a doctor. I'll have the same midwife who looked after me with Dd and ds which is lovely! She is amazing! Told her last time i'd never see her again in a professional capacity, how things change :o x

nocluenoclueatall · 26/04/2012 22:02

Re: nuchal fold test... isn't that the only way you get a scan via the NHS though? As far as I understand it (and I could be wrong, my midwife is a total nightmare and was much more interested in filling in forms than explaining anything to me) you get two tests - one around 12 weeks (the nuchal fold) and another, an anomaly scan at 20 weeks. Both times really they (the NHS) are checking for bad things, whilst we (mums) are after reassurance. Much as it would be heartbreaking to find out something's wrong, the way I look at it, you're going to find out sooner or later, so why not take a chance, have the test and get a good look at your baby?

I had both with DS (and two additional ones - was living in a much more civilized country at the time!) and it was great to see him happy and healthy in there. FWIW I was 37 at the time and from memory was given a one in two thousand chance of him having Downs. If the chances had been higher, I wouldn't have changed anything or had further tests... I would still do the same again though. The idea of getting to 9 months with no scans at all is not really an option for me. I'm actually thinking of paying for an early one just for reassurance as it is...

mwahmwah · 26/04/2012 22:04

Still get the 12 weeks without the muchal fold I think, its the dating scan as far as i'm aware... X

Glitterfairys · 26/04/2012 22:39

That's how the midwife explained to me today mwahmwah That the 12 week scan is dating and then also the nuchal fold is done then as well if you want it . I think I would like the nuchal scan because I think I would prefer to know now instead of later really .
