Here we go again.......

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
cakes82 · 01/04/2012 23:02

I'm 30 this year and I've had mmr at the Drs and mr as part of a school vaccination program, I think I was about 11 maybe when the school did the
mr vaccine.

Hope everything is ok Scream

NinjaChipmunk · 02/04/2012 08:32

Good luck today scream i'm sure I had the mmr at secondary school and i'm 37? I guess different areas do it differently. Is it thw one that leaves a little round scar on your arm?
Busy week this week. Be back later.

scarletfingernail · 02/04/2012 08:40

Brooking for you today Scream, I'm sure everything will be fine.

Ninja I think it might be the TB jab that leaves the scar? Not 100% sure though, I didn't end up having that either, but that was because I was one of the lucky ones who had natural immunity.

Now I'm wondering if the reason I didn't have the MMR was because I'd already had all 3 illnesses. When did my memory get so rubbish? It's not that long since I was a teenager!

Is anyone else who's due now really struggling looking after their toddlers? DH has no holiday left until his new annual entitlement starts in May. DS is begging me to take him out to see some animals, I'd really love to, I just don't know if it's a good idea after last week's park episode. Plus I'm exhausted and achey.

OP posts:
ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 02/04/2012 08:43

Thanks Ninja. The secondary school one with the scar is the BCG vaccination. MMR is a vaccination given to babies and I've double-checked and it came in just after I passed the right age for the booster.

ARGH!!!! I rang the hospital to see if I can get a blood test and they're not sure if they want to let me into the hospital to have it. I have my scan booked there at 4.30 though so I'm SCREWED if they won't let me in the building. I'm so stressed out, I can't believe I've waited so long for this scan and now it's all going wrong :( If they postpone my scan to next week to wait and see if I have symptoms what if I go into labour!?! Plus what if I do have symptoms? ARGH!!!!

I've got to wait for them to call me back later this morning to see if I can come in. I want to cry...

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 02/04/2012 08:49

D'oh!! Apologies for all the melodrama!

Would you believe the hospital rang me straight back and said I can still come in! Grin They've said there's no point doing a blood test because if I have mumps it's not a problem for the baby until/unless I develop a fever, and having the test at this stage wouldn't enable me to prevent a fever if there's even one coming. They also said I'm not contagious (if I have it) until/unless I start coughing/sneezing. So I'm fine to come in for my appt.

Yay! Gosh I feel like such a ninny for getting myself so worked up! I've cried at silly things like adverts during this pg, but I've never had such an overreaction to the potential delay of an appt!!!

pommedechocolat · 02/04/2012 08:52

Yay for scream!! Back to brooking for a good scan then Wink

TheLittleFriend · 02/04/2012 09:08

Hi everyone

I'm just popping in to mark my place for the influx of babies this month. Hope you're all well xxx

Biscuitsandtea · 02/04/2012 09:33

Thank goodness Scream that they can let you go in - and for what it's worth I actually don't think you were over-reacting at all. In your position I would have been up the wall if I was told I couldn't potentially go in for the scan this afternoon!!!

Thank goodness who ever set the alarm bells ringing obviously got to speak to someone who knows their stuff and came straight back to you!

I was just pegging out my washing thinking about it all and I was trying to work out what they would have done if they wouldn't let you go to the hospital and you'd gone into labour - they would have to let you in then wouldn't they?

But thank goodness no maternity biohazard suits are required Grin

Anyway, that's today's glitch out of the way so at least it can be plain sailing now to get the scan done to prove that those fibroids have moved so far up you can probably see them better if they were to scan your nose.

I can offer no insights about MMR jabs. I have no idea whether or not I had it as a baby. I've never had Measles or mumps. I did have German Measles when I was little and I had a rubella jab when I was at secondary school. Would I have needed that if I'd had the MMR? I did have a BCG at secondary school but didn't get a scar from it, which is pretty rare I think.

McPopcornMouseNFries · 02/04/2012 09:43

Gosh scream that's scary for you, I'm glad they're ok with you coming in for your scan!

cakes82 · 02/04/2012 10:01

So glad everything is heading in right direction for you Scream brooking all is how you want it to be!!

As an aside how does everyone feel about the MMR vaccine given the bad media press there has been in the past?

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 02/04/2012 10:34

Scream, I too would have been in floods of tears if I was told I couldn't have the scan, with everything you have riding on it. I'm so pleased you can have it after all! I'm 28 too and I had the MMR in Primary 7 (age 10/11). I thought the MMR replaced 3 previous individual jabs, though. I did have mumps when I was 5, though, so maybe not. You might well be okay, though - I had it and my sister didn't, despite us sharing a room and going everywhere together, so you might be lucky.

Cakes, I'm sure I read somewhere that the bad press was all scaremongering and there was no evidence that the MMR caused autism. Does anyone know for sure?

Biscuits, I haven't got a scar from the BCG either! I thought it was the smallpox vaccine that left a scar. I've not had that - too young.

Dream, have a bf tip for you from my mum - she says if 1 twin wakes up for a feed, wake the other up and feed them too or you really will be feeding continually. You probably knew that already, but thought I would post it just in case.

Biscuitsandtea · 02/04/2012 10:59

On the MMR thing my mum told me that she had heard somewhere (she works with special needs children) that the signs for autism often show at about the same age that the mmr is given so there was a school of thought that it was just coincidental rather a cause / effect relationship.

However that is based on no medical knowledge. I have heard though that measles can cause terrible terrible problems like brain damage etc. and isn't mumps very dangerous for boys in terms of future parenting ability if it gets them downstairs?

We had then MMR for DS1 and, barring any obvious medical findings in the next year, we'll have it for DS2 too.

cakes82 · 02/04/2012 11:05

I also work with children with autism and had heard the same about the signs of autism. I want our child vaccinated i'm just not sure about all three at the exact same time.

Biscuitsandtea · 02/04/2012 11:07

It certainly knocked DS1 for six having it - don't know if it was because of having them all together? He'd also just started nursery so I think that and the mega-jab just knocked him right off for probably 6-8 weeks

pommedechocolat · 02/04/2012 11:17

The doctor who published the mmr and autism link was discredited. Dd1 had it and bar a fever with no other symptoms a week later was fine. Dd2 will have it too.

McPopcornMouseNFries · 02/04/2012 11:30

I had a horrible allergic reaction when I had MMR almost thirty years ago so it does make me a bit oo-er about Mini-Pops having it all in one go Confused but on balance, I think the diseases it prevents are usually worse than the risk of a reaction?? Not sure I buy into the autism link, personally (though not for any expert reason, it just sounds a bit tenuous and unresearched)

ScreamIfYouWantToGoFaster · 02/04/2012 11:57

I'm keeping my fingers crossed I haven't caught mumps anyway - it's not like I French kissed the mw or anything! It can take up to 3 weeks max for symptoms to start, so I'm just going to try and put it out of my mind for now.

I remember all the bad press but, like Popcorn, I didn't hear anything that really convinced me. I think I'll probably accept the MMR as normal when it's this baby's turn. I can also request one for myself once I'm not pregnant! I might do that because the MMR isn't given to babies until 1 year, on the assumption they've inherited passive immunity from their Mum which covers them for that first year. Obviously I won't be passing on any immunity to my LO so the least I can do is make sure I don't catch it myself and inadvertently make them ill!

Is Fishcake around? Any due date twinges over the weekend?

How is Dream holding up? 48 hours to go my lovely! You're soooooo close!

Scarlet has your LO turned do you think? Please forgive my baby brain and remind me of your ECV date?

I hope all the No Brookers who aren't in their 3rd tri yet are getting on okay! Stock up on sleep ladies! Grin I'm only teasing, isn't it frustrating when people pretend sleep can be stored up?!

jaggythistle · 02/04/2012 12:12

on the vaccines i think any one carries the tiny very rare risk that you might have a reaction to it. on the mmr i don't think there was any evidence to link the vaccine and autism, i have read a wee bit about it. DS had a temp and was a bit grumpy for a while after his. i suppose he'll be due a booster soonish.

i had mumps when i was wee scream and was off school for about a month, really hope MW hasn't passed it to you :(

i was also quite ill with whooping cough when i was tiny, my mum still feels bad as i wasn't vaccinated due to a scare at the time!

i am indeed struggling with chasing my 2.6 year old scarlet, day one of maternity leave and i have already produced a new dvd that i knew he'd love. Blush. although DH is a SAHD, he's got a big diy thing he wants to do, so it's going to just be me and DS a lot. i am loving getting to spend time with him, but will be waiting for nap time!

hope my pelvic floor is in good shape, have got a bit of a cough and need about 700 wees a day.

jaggythistle · 02/04/2012 12:58

also brooking absolutely no argument for a perfect scan scream. :)

McPopcornMouseNFries · 02/04/2012 13:33

That's so cool jaggy - DH would give his left testicle to be a SAHD and he'd be way better than I would, too :o

jaggythistle · 02/04/2012 13:48

He seems to quite like it, although he is freaking out about me being at home making his nice tidy house a mess Blush

It was nice that I worried less going back to work as DS was with his Daddy. It was originally just for a year, but it's worked so well that he quit his job. I do shifts which is a bit more money and get to have some family mornings/afternoons so it is pretty cool.

jaggythistle · 02/04/2012 13:50

PS tis nap time so I have dashed to the PC Grin

DH is all Hmm as I said I was going to do some ironing....

fishcakefoxtrot · 02/04/2012 15:36

Hello, no baby here yet- am definitely holding on for tomorrow! I think I am in denial about it really. I am so tired that I can't imagine adding a baby in too. DD has making sure she gets maximum mummy time before the baby arrives by sleeping terribly and has been in with me the last couple of nights. Perhaps I could get the hopsital to admit me tonight just to make sure I get one final, decent night's sleep?!

Scream I really hope you have a good scan.

Re the mumps- I really hope you don't get them but you should also check whether or not your DH has had them (sorry if you mentioned this already). If not, he might want to look into the vaccine for himself. Basically, adult men can get swollen testicles, and mumps post puberty can lead to infertility. This happened to a friend of mine although fortunately he and his partner conceived via IVF. Plus you don't want him to be ill when he's meant to be looking after you!

Musical I think you and I will be moving the same weekend! Hopefully we have found somewhere to rent (just waiting for confirmation) so now we just need someone to rent our flat.

DD had the MMR and will have the booster at 3.

I am definitely struggling with bump + toddler. DD and I are watching tv. No final fun activities before tomorrow. I feel a bit of a failure. I might try and summon up the energy to do some baking with her.

fishcakefoxtrot · 02/04/2012 15:39

Also, I meant to say thank you for all the hospital bag suggestions from those of you who are now on the other side! I have packed everything (I think) apart from snacks and I am going to go out for those later. I quite fancy some fig rolls...

Biscuitsandtea · 02/04/2012 15:53

Fishcake!!!

You're going to have your baby tomorrow!!! Squeeeeeee!!!!

Can't believe that in, like 48 hours, we'll have 3 new brooking babies! Maybe 4 if we include the fact that Scream will be going into labour and straight in for her ELCS after her consultant appt on Wed.....

Scream I'm brooking like a loon for your scan this arvo.
