good for you

DairyNips · 09/03/2012 18:23

Mmm chocolate mousseSmile

We are the house of illnessSad Just about got over one bug and we all have another. I feel full of cold and my terrible cough is back, boys and dh coughing away and ds1 has a temp and has been sick all over himself. Wish we could get a break, I want to visit my new niece again but don't want her to catch this!

ChateauMargot · 09/03/2012 19:14

Special, how incredibly insulting! I'd be putting in a complaint, stat. Haven't had any experience of consultants yet, myself (all midwife-led, and a different one each time) but I'd be livid at the bullying tone of that letter. And 35 is 'older'??

MummyLuce Where I am (UCH) I'm told they do a routine growth scan at 34 weeks - perhaps worth checking if you're entitled to this, too?

Started having very sharp, stabbing pains in my left lower hip at the back (ie., lower back, bum) this week. It was sporadic at first, but in the last 24 hours has been recurring regularly. Comes out of nowhere and is occasionally so painful I gasp and literally cannot continue whatever movement it was that set it off (was woken by it a few times last night, too). Have a doc's appointment on Monday, though I expect the advice will be Paracetemol plus talk to your midwife, as usual Hmm - in the meantime, have been told to rotate ice packs and hot water bottle twice a day. Have any other MNers had this? I'm not sure that it's the same at SPD pain - possibly a trapped nerve?..

CathFin · 09/03/2012 20:36

Chateau thats the same location as my pain. Mine is worst in bed, if I'm up and moving about its okay, but I occasionally get in an odd position and it feels like my leg is going to fall off/stop working!!!

I also had it last pregnancy too. As long as its not too bad I'm planning on ignoring it - it went after I gave birth last time. Bloody painful and annoying though. When I first lie down in bed its agony for some reason, in fact I almost can't lie down, have to do it very slowly, think that is also why I wake up and have to turn over.

If you find out what it is I'd love to know!

Kveta · 09/03/2012 20:49

Chateau, could it be sciatica? my childminder told me she got it with both her pregnancies...

OP posts:
Fanbelt · 09/03/2012 21:27

Special - glad to hear you're not taking your consulant's crap lying down. I was terribly neglected by my MWs when pregnant with DS2 which resulted in him being born by emergency c-section and us being told afterwards that we're lucky he survived. Slightly different to your situation but I can't help looking back and thinking if I'd been a bit more self-confident and forceful about my medical care (after all I was the one having the baby!) things would have been different.

Mummyluce - I know what you mean about scans - I remember feeling that with my previous two. This time around I'm getting extra growth scans - I've got one next week - which I'm a bit nervous about 'cos of having IUGR with previous 2 pregnancies. So, it'll be nice to see bubba again but a bit scary waiting to hear if everything is going okay or not.

Seriously - love that you've bought a bass guitar instead of a pram. I'll have to tell my DH that - he's a bass player too and he's angling for a mixing desk that someone he knows is selling. Apparently it's a really good one at a good price and will come in really useful... not quite sure how exactly. Also I'm intrigued as to how you are able to play bass with a growing bump - are you gifted with exceptionally long arms/fingers perhaps?

I've been invited to a murder mystery party next week. Apparently I've got a special part written for me: "pregnant lady that goes into labour during dinner". Not sure yet if I'm the one that gets murdered though. Looking forward to hamming it up and possibly somehow rigging up a balloon filled with water to imitate waters breaking. Grin

Kayzr · 09/03/2012 21:28

Chateau I get some sciatica when not pregnant. It sounds like it could be that so I would mention it to midwife or doctor. Physio really helps me and I sometimes gets given strong painkillers.

I'm watching baby move about again. You'd think being on my 3rd it wouldn't be so fascinating to watch. Smile

Hope everyone is well and has a good nights sleep.

Kayzr · 09/03/2012 21:29

Fanbelt that sounds sooo cool. I've always wanted to go to murder mystery evening. They do them on the steam trains here and the closest I've got is when DP is driving the train and I'm on with him.

thedogwalker · 09/03/2012 21:30

Sounds like sciatica to me. I suffer with it. I have a pregnancy yoga dvd which I do nightly and it relieves the pain. I would certainly reccommend you buying one. I got mine cheap from amazon during first pregnancy.

Fanbelt · 09/03/2012 21:40

Also, don't know if any of you can help. I'm sorting out my hospital bag this weekend. A bit early, I know but I've got a scan/consultant appt on Tuesday and after previous experiences I'm a bit paranoid they're going to whisk me into hospital and deliver me there and then (reading that back now, it does sound daft Confused).

Anyway, I want to buy a couple of maternity nighties this weekend - I've been vaguely looking around on the internet but they all seem so ridiculously over-priced. Like they add £10 to the price 'cos it's got a few buttons down the front for BF easy-access. I think I'm going to get the 2-pack from Mothercare for £26 but wondered if any of you could suggest something different. I'm probably going to have ELCS so don't really want pjs cos of catheter/waistband on scar etc.

Kayzr · 09/03/2012 21:43

Fanbelt Matalan do them and so do primark. They aren't maternity ones though. I just got larger sizes but they were really good. The buttons come undone and they are about half the price of mothercare ones.

Has anyone had any thoughts of starting a birth plan yet?

Fanbelt · 09/03/2012 21:45

Kayzr my friend who's doing it runs various kids drama clubs and stuff so she's making it all up herself hence the bespoke pregnant lady part for me. Driving a steam train sounds pretty exciting to me! Or do you just get to look on while your DP does all the manly shoveling in coal type stuff?

Fanbelt · 09/03/2012 21:49

Kayzr thanks for that - I'll have a look in Primark/Matalan. I don't want to spend loads 'cos I know they're only going to get covered in leaky boob milk/blood/other grim post-partum bodily fluids (sorry if TMI).

I haven't got as far as birth plan yet but I think my MW does a special week 34 appt for that. Not sure how much you can plan if you're having an ELCS anyway... "definitely want anaesthetic, probably not fussed about sitting on a birthing ball?"

Kayzr · 09/03/2012 21:59

DP does the driving mainly. He occasionally shovels coal, especially if the fireman is getting close to his driver exams. I used to do a lot of the shovelling but I'm not allowed on the footplate now so I get stuck in a carriage if I want to go. The bath looks awful after we've both been out on the train Grin

Fanbelt · 09/03/2012 22:14

Just looked at Matalan website and they've got loads of nighties - thanks. SmileThanks

bemybebe · 09/03/2012 22:24

Good idea to start looking at birth plans. I am doing my research and one thing that is definitely going into the plan is Delayed Cord Clamping. Here are a few BBC articles to consider, but there is plenty of the academic research in the public domain that call for the practice to be routinely adopted UK-wide.
First
Second
Note that at the moment the cord is more likely to be cut as soon as practical.

blondiedollface · 09/03/2012 22:29

Chateau My SPD presented for the majority of the first trimester as sharp pain that took my breath away somewhere inside my bum cheek IYSWIM, it felt like a trapped nerve but both MW and GP said it was the SPD... I found pushing my thumb into the origin of the pain really helped ease it and at a pregnancy physio session the best advice I got was when experiencing the pains or when stood up for more than a few minutes to clench my muscles - really helped with controlling the spasm-like pain!

I hope you feel better, mine did eventually subside, and I found that hot water bottles and warm baths were the best way to ease the discomfort :)

thedogwalker · 10/03/2012 15:28

Hi all
Kayzr, I'm just going to use my birth plan that I used for DS1, with a few minor changes. Do you want me to post it on here to give you some ideas, obviously not everything I wanted will be what you wanted but, I'm happy to let people see mine if they want to.

thedogwalker · 10/03/2012 15:32

OK, here is my birth plan from DS1, bit long winded and they don't have to be this longth, but here goes.
In General

I plan to give birth in a Birthing pool, at the hospital. I hope to use the birthing pool throughout labour and birth, with the use of acupuncture, if necessary. If a birthing pool is not available, then I wish to be allowed to walk around and stay mobile for as long as possible. I do not want to be laid on my back for the birth.

I plan on having my husband (Chris) and my Mother in the room with me. My husband and I will be using hypnotherapy and relaxation techniques. We would like a natural birth and would really appreciate a quiet and calm environment. Please be assured that you will have our full co-operation in the event of a medical circumstance, subject to having discussed things.

The Labour

We would like to allow labour and delivery to progress at its own pace, and would appreciate having no time pressures as far as possible, or procedures based solely on the passing of time. If all else is well with the baby and me, we are happy to wait while nature takes its course. I do not want an injection / drugs just to speed up the delivery if there are no signs of distress to my baby.

I hope to manage without drugs for pain relief, and I plan to use hypnotherapy with the help of Chris. However, I am not ruling out the use of drugs but would only like to use if necessary and with the advice and assistance of medical staff.

I understand that labour can slow down or even stop for around an hour between stage two and three, please allow a passive hour to enable me to stay relaxed and listen to my body's cues as to when baby is ready to be helped into the world. I do not want to have any use of fundal pressure.

The Birth

When the baby is born, please pass him straight to me to lay on my chest. I would like Chris to remain in the room with us so we can bond together as a family. Chris would like to cut the cord. I would like the cord clamped and cut when it stops pulsating. I wish no drugs to be used unless specifically needed. It is important to me that you do not clamp the cord until it has stopped pulsating, unless you need to take emergency steps which preclude this.

Care of the Baby

If possible I would rather have baby with me for at least an hour after birth, before any weighing and cleaning etc. I would like to breastfeed my baby as soon as possible after the birth.

If, for some reason, I am medically unwell and unable to have skin-to-skin contact with my baby I would like Chris to have skin-to-skin contact with him.

We are happy for the baby to receive Vitamin K.

Other Information

If an epidural is unavoidable I would prefer to have a mobile epidural if at all possible.

I am very keen to avoid a caesarean section if it is at all possible. I particularly would
like to avoid a caesarean just for slow progress. If labour is simply taking a long time but my baby is not in immediate danger, please would you encourage me to keep going and perhaps to try changes of position or movements which might help. Please do not offer a caesarean unless my baby is in danger.

If a caesarean section becomes necessary, I would prefer to remain awake with epidural or spinal block anaesthesia. I would like Chris to stay with me at all times, and would like to breastfeed the baby as soon after birth as possible.

Please do not give my baby supplements of glucose water or formula milk without my
permission. I would expressly like to avoid having any formula supplements unless it is unavoidable, and certainly not in the first two days in any event.

If I have trouble breastfeeding, I would greatly appreciate the help of a midwife who is
fully supportive of breastfeeding.

Thank you so much for reading this and helping us to have the birth we are hoping for.

Kayzr · 10/03/2012 15:32

I have no idea what was in mine from the boys except for no epidural at all. But as ds2 and this one will be at home it doesn't matter that bit Grin

TDW that would be great thank you.

thedogwalker · 10/03/2012 15:34

Kayzr I x posted with you, it's above Smile

Kayzr · 10/03/2012 15:37

Thanks TDW

I am slightly worried about the climbing out of the pool after I give birth. I literally collapsed onto sofa for cuddles with DS2 Grin

SpecialJK · 10/03/2012 19:45

Hi all

TDW glad you had some lovely R&R time with DH. And thanks for the birth plan, that's given me loads of good thinking stuff

So, went to GP, my other consultant not doing ante-natal on NHS anymore, but going to speak to midwife on monday to get a list of who all the consultants are. I may even end up paying privately to go see my old consultant to get his view

I went to NCT nearly new sale this morning... what an experience!! Smile we got there 30 mins before and the queue was pretty long. We managed to get some baby clothes, changing mat, playgym, cellular blankets, couple of lamaze toys and a think for me to kneel on while baby bathing, as I have terrible knees. so really chuffed.

Advice for anyone whose not been before a) get there early to get in the queue! and b) take someone with you that can go to a different section whilst you're in another one e.g. when you're in equipment, they can go to toys. It started at 11 and we were finished at 11.25 and paid up. If you hadn't got the stuff you wanted by then, the good stuff was gone. There were still plenty of clothes though, but the equipment stuff went V quickly.

Very glad I went! :D

CathFin · 11/03/2012 09:30

Special - would be worth seeing your old consultant probably, at least he should have a proper opinion instead of the nhs one you currently have plus he could probably tell you which alternative nhs one might be your best bet?

I did a long distance purchase from our NNS - I asked my friend to keep an eye out on the moses basket front and have now got a lovely mama's and papa's one with a stand.
I also blagged a maxi cosi baby car seat off my friend who has just put her little boy into a forward facing one. My DS ripped the polystyrene cushioning out of ours when I took the covers off for a clean (little imp).
Will probably buy a new set of newborn clothes but apart from that I should be sorted (need to borrow a cocoon for my p&t too). Baby doing some funky moves in there now so it all feels a lot more imminent all of a sudden!

TDW - also good to see the birth plan, mine needs more detail I think but in essence was similar to yours although I'm not so fussed about the water birth this time as that hasn't happened with the first two!

Stuntnun · 11/03/2012 10:33

Hi gang, don't know if anyone remembers me from waaay back in December when I fell off the bus Sad but I thought I'd let you know I'm now on the November 2012 bus Grin. Good luck to everyone I hope all goes well for you in June Envy
